RMAN backup  tag question

I am little confused even after I read the RMAN doc. If I have a full level 0 backup tag "mybk$level_0" database, then my level 1 incremental backup tag has to be the same - "mybk$level_1" or "mybk$level_0".
I just run the incremental backup through the whole weekend and noticed the each run would generated two identical "spfile, controlefile" backup, one before the archivelog backup, one after it. Why?

The tag name can be the same as what you set. Tag names can be of different names and different formats, does not need to be a specific name. You can replace mybk with myarchive if you think that is more meaningful. You can also attach date and time variable with the tags to make them more meaning full.
It doesn't have to be this way,
{ backup incremental level 1 cumulative device type disk tag 'mybk%LEVEL_1' database;
recover copy of database;
backup device type disk tag 'mrarchive' archivelog all not backed up; }
If you are calling the rman backup from shell script you can attach the dates to tags as below.
export TDATE=`date +%a%m%d%y`
tag="Archive_${TDATE}"
or
tag "Archive_${TDATE}"

Tags for Backups and Image CopiesYou can assign a user-specified character string called a tag to backup sets and image copies (either copies created by RMAN or copies created by an operating system utility). A tag is a case-insensitive symbolic name for a backup set or file copy such as weekly_backup. You can specify the tag rather than the filename when executing the RESTORE or CHANGE command. The maximum length of a tag is 30 characters.
If you do not specify a tag name, then by default RMAN creates a tag for backups and copies (except for control file autobackups) in the format TAGYYYYMMDDTHHMMSS, where YYYY is the year, MM is the month, DD is the day, HH is the hour (in 24-hour format), MM is the minutes, and SS is the seconds. For example, a backup of datafile 1 may receive the tag TAG20020208T133437. The date and time refer to when RMAN started the backup. If multiple backup sets are created by one BACKUP command, then each backup piece is assigned the same default tag.
When applied to a backup set, a tag applies to a specific copy of the backup set. If you do not duplex a backup set, that is, make multiple identical copies of it, then a one-to-one correspondence exists between the tag and the backup set. For example, BACKUP COPIES 1 DATAFILE 7 TAG foo creates one backup set with tag foo. However, you can back up this backup set and give this new copy of the backup set the tag bar. So, the backup set has two identical copies: one tagged foo and the other tagged bar.
Tags do not need to be unique, so multiple backup sets or image copies can have the same tag name, for example, weekly_backup. When a tag is not unique, then with respect to a given datafile, the tag refers to the most current suitable file. By default, RMAN selects the most recent backups to restore unless qualified by a tag or a SET UNTIL command. The most current suitable backup containing the specified file may not be the most recent backup, as can occur in point-in-time recovery.
For example, if datafile copies are created each Monday evening and are always tagged mondaypmcopy, then the tag refers to the most recent copy (assuming that no SET UNTIL command is issued before restore or recovery). Thus, if complete recovery is desired, this command switches datafile 3 to the most recent Monday evening copy:
SWITCH DATAFILE 3 TO DATAFILECOPY TAG mondaypmcopy;
Tags can indicate the intended purpose or usage of different classes of backups or file copies. For example, datafile copies that are suitable for use in a SWITCH can be tagged differently from file copies that should be used only for RESTORE.
Note:
If you specify a tag when specifying input files to a RESTORE or SWITCH command, then RMAN considers only backup sets with a matching tag when choosing which backup to use

  • Rman backup optimization question

    Hi,
    I have come across a RAM related question and would like to understand the answer:
    The RMAN configuration has backup optimization set to ON. Which of the following commands will this setting affect?
    a) Backup Archivelog with ALL or LIKE options, b) Backup Backupset ALL, c) Backup Tablespace, d) Backup Database
    I believe all of the above are affected by backup optimization, however, only a, b and d seems correct, not c. I wonder why tablespace is not affected - it does not say read only, etc.?

    Meanwhile I did a few tests below, and yes, tablespace does obviously not use backup optimization. But why? Doesn't the same like backup database apply? Isn't using the same retention policy?

    Should I be able to back up a db using RMAN in a 10.1.0.2 installation and recover using RMAN in a 10.1.0.3 installation (using same OS, etc.)?

    RegardsWhere are your backup files now? Confirm you still have them and they didn't get dropped as part of your deleting/dropping the database.
    If, as you say, you deleted the entire database, there really is no concept of 'same server'. You want to restore/recover the database onto a server which does not currently have any copy/version of that particular database. Whether or not there ever WAS one on that box is pretty much meaningless, except for the fact there may be some bits and pieces we can use. But the basic technique is the same.
    You haven't state your OS, which is important. If its Windows, you'll need to use oradim to recreate the service. Once that is done, rman can connect to an 'idle' instance and proceed from there.
    Once rman connects to an idle instance, you restore the control file from backup, then mount the database (open the control file) then restore and recover the db. rman will use information in the resotred control file to locate the backupsets and process the rest of the operation. there are details that need to be attended to but that's the overall outline.

    250G database. I ran the script

    And the backup file is still around 220G. Is there another way to compress? Anybody have an idea how to make the backup smaller?

    How many CPU's does your server have?
    And why don't you let RMAN choose the default's regarding the files per set, the backup set piece size, etc. Whenever you run a compressed backup, RMAN would normally use at approx.12% of CPU per channel. A 45hr backup time is clearly unacceptable that too when it is a 24/7 database but as your are using a single channel, which might be the culprit. I would suggest to use about 4 channels (depending on your CPU load) and do not put any restrictions on the files per set and backup set piece size.
    We do a compressed backup to disk of a 230G database on a 8 proc server with 4 channels allocated and the backup normally completes in about 1.45 hours and the FULL backup size produced is around 30G ( level 0 is a FULL backup).

    Hello -
    If I'm backing up specific datafiles (say 3 datafiles in one RMAN script) and I have 4 of these scripts - so a total of 12 files being backup up, should I have a separate script that just backs up all of the archived log files? Or should I include a Backup Archivelog all command in each specific script?

    backup each datafile once according to your backup shedule there is no advantage of backup each data file foure times it conversly decrade or slow down your backup working. there is no need to include archive logs in your scripts. I think you should create seprate sript for archived logs.

  • RMAN backup and TSM question

    We have rman backup file name contains the datetime so it is unique and easy to tell. But TSM keeps every file 4 versions, so the backup file (always 1 version because of unique name) will stay on tape forever. I have no idea about TSM, according to your experience, what is the normal solution here?

    But quickly, in general, "DBA" and "TSM/Storage manager" need to agree on media manager use and setup the system accordingly.

  • RMAN backup and restore for Disaster Recovery

    Hi Guys,
    I am very new to Oracle and have a question about RMAN backup and restore feature. I am simulating a disaster recovery scenario by having two VMs running oracle 11g, say hosta and hostb, hosta is sort of production db and the other a disaster recovery db (one that will be made primary when disaster occurs). My goal is to backup production db using RMAN and restore it on the other machine. For some reason when I restore the db on hostb, the command restores the previous backup but not the most recent one e.g. I took a backup yesterday (09/20) and applied it to the hostb that worked fine, but when I try to apply a fresh backup from today (09/21) it always picks up the old backup. Here's a dump of the screen:

  • RMAN backup on RAC

    Hi,
    DB=10.2.0.4 OS=RHL (RAC with 2 nodes db01,db02). Following are the types of automated RMAN backups taken on db01.
    - OCR
    - Voting Disk
    - Talespaces Snapshot
    - Archivelog (every hour)
    - Backup Incremental level 0 (SUNDAY)
    -- backup incrementa level 1 (Mon-SAT)
    - Autobackup of Control file and SPFILE (CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON)
    Two main questions please. First, are these backups/backup types are enough FOR FULL RESTORE when talking about RMAN backup on RAC environment with 2 nodes? If not please suggest what else I need to backup?
    Secondly, backup home location is /rman which I can see on db01 ONLY. This /rman directory I cannot see on db02. My question is that In case of db02 failure can I restore from this /rman directory? or do I need to automate backup schedules also on db02 separately?

    THanks alot for your feedback. Makes my life easier :) . But actually I started studying this all subject because of the following error message in the log file. I found out about this error that doesn't seem to harm. Just wait for the job to finish or it will sort out automatically. Here are the lines from the log file.

    Thing which I just noticed regarding the above RMAN error is that snapcf_fp11.f can be seen on the Node 1 on todays date but snapcf_fp12.f was only on 10th jan.

    "You need to move the snapshot control file to a shared location if you plan to run backups from more than one node. If you do not move the snapshot control file to a shared file system such as OCFS or an ASM disk group, then you must make sure that the local destination is identical on all nodes."
    My question is of course, how to sort out the above log file error. Becuse in our case, backups are run only from one node, and snaphost control file is not being moved to ASM disk groups. Local destination is also same on both the Nodes, isn't it (with different names). Why on Node 2 last snapshot was taken on 10th jan while on Node 1 it is todays date which seems fine.
    Control file and SPFILE which I noticed are stored on ASM disk groups also, so being shared between the two Nodes.
    (Sanme names/same location for control file and SPFILE on Node 1 and Node 2)

    What this system do now?

    Thursday:     ArchiveLog Backup
    Friday :         Full Backup - > After that, Full backup from Tuesday are deleted but not ArchiveLog backups from Wed, and Thurs.
    When I execute a crosscheck on RMAN return that all are AVAILABLE.
    My question is: What is right? The system backups before or after?

    You are confused about the purpose of crosscheck.
    There are two concepts for which you must grasp the distinction.
    - Expired
    - Obsolete
    Expired
    When an archive log is written, or rman makes a backup, a record of that archivelog or backupset is written to the repository in the control file.
    Crosscheck simply checks the existence of the archivelogs or backupsets that are recorded in the repository.  If something went missing (say, if you used an OS command to delete archivelogs), the record of the missing file is marked as 'expired'.  If you follow the crosscheck command with a 'delete expired' command, the repository records that have been marked 'expired' are deleted from the repository, so rman has no more memory of those files.  Note that 'expired' has nothing to do with retention policy.  Also note that if you do not actually issue the 'delete expired' command, the expired records will remain in the repository. 
    Obsolete
    The retention policy deals with when a backupset is obsolete, meaning it is no longer needed to protect the retention period.  Backupset are not marked as obsolete.  They are evaluated for obsolescence at the time of a command that needs it -- "report obsolete" or "delete obsolete", or when FRA maintenance requires an implied 'delete obsolete'.

  • Restore last week Rman backup

    i need to restore last week rman backup from .. we are not using catalog database.
    i need to restore it on same machine with diff mount point ..
    i know i can use tag option of restore specifically last week backup but its production restore so thought if anybody can give me list of steps i need to follow .. anybody who has done this before.
    do i have to fire resetlogs at the end as its incomplete recovery .. i need last saturday backup .. don't want monday backup on top of it.
    please help me in this.

    By means of the use of Recovery Manager it is possible to duplicate a database out from a previously taken rman backup. The method will be outlined in the next few lines.
    Let's assume a source database named SRCDB and the target database, named GEMINI. A unix like environment is assumed, but it can be implemented on windows as well, just beware of the particular Oracle implementation on a windows platform (orapwd file name, service creation, path format)
    1. Create a password file for the Cloned (GEMINI) instance:
    orapwd file=/u01/app/oracle/product/9.2.0.1.0/dbs/orapwGEMINI password=password entries=10
    2. Configure tnsnames.ora and listner.ora
    Properly identify the database at the tnsnames.ora and have the instance manually registered against the listener.ora files, both files located at the $ORACLE_HOME/network/admin directory.
    2.a Manually register the database against the listener (listener.ora)

    7. Connect to the TARGET, CATALOG and AUXILIARY databases.
    By means of the rman three connections are open, one for the Source Database (SOURCEDB), another for the Catalog database (RCAT), and one more for the cloned database (GEMINI)

    8. Complete or Incomplete clone (recover)
    From the rman the database using one of the following commands:

    8.b Clone the database up to a defined point in time in the past by means of an incomplete recover
    DUPLICATE TARGET DATABASE TO GEMINI UNTIL TIME 'SYSDATE-2';

    When you performing RMAN duplicate why you making your script so complicated?
    Your instance name and DB name can be different, But what is the contents in your pfile "D:\TESTDELETE\initclonedb1.ora" ? please do post
    Have you started any other services related to ORACLE? check in start --> run --> services.msc any other active oracles services, Make sure you have clonedb1.
    Startup in nomount
    check the connectivity to target server.

    I am not able to restore spfile from rman backup ;;;

    Hi,
    I would like to know few things
    1. How are you setting the db_name ? you can set db_id at RMAN, how are you setting the db_name ?
    2. Do you have any default init file at default location ? if yes, is the db_name parameter set correctly in that file ?
    Since spfile is yet to be restored, you must set the db_name parameter correctly before you start spfile restore.This can be done with init file at default location which can even contain just one paremeter i.e db_name.

  • Need Advice on RMAN backup script

    Hi;
    Can any one advice if any error or guide to make RMAN backup proper :
    Backup Policy are:
    1.     0 level backup
    2.     current log file is arvhived before backing up
    3.     backup whole database (datafiles)
    4.     backup separate control file
    5.     backup is done on disk
    6.     control file auto backup ON
    7.     only 7 days archive log are need to be preserve ; old need to be deleted

    Actually, I just added in my backup plan to have daily backup through RMAN, instead of COLD backup.
    I have planned to take cold backup once a week. here is the side of data:
    *** datafile 410
    *** size of database : 86 GM
    *** relog files size : 250MB
    *** daily archive logs are : 250MB * 4(number of files) = 1GM aprox.
    yes, time constraint is there; just because of the size of database. and we r going for 24/7
    Is this script going to run only one per week ?
    Ans: no I this was level 0 backup; i will take level 1 incremental backup with same script daily too.
    Do you have any other RMAN script ?
    ANS: no, I will modify same script for incremental.
    after local copy of backup all backup files (RMAN) will be copy over network to backup server or we can install LTO tape device to copy directly from database server.
    kindly advise me I am new in RMAN.
