Rman: can't open catalog

Hi, Completely new to all this rman stuff. Reading up in the Oracel Database 10g DBA Handbook which has a step by step on RMAN. I have failed at the first hurdle, getting error message "rman: can't open catalog" when I type "rman catalog rman/rman001" havingf set up the Oracle SID alreafy. If I type "rman" and nothing else the sessions hangs?
Any thoughts and advice most welcome.

export ORACLE_SID
export ORACLE_HOME
export PATH
export ORACLE_BASE
Now Create RMAN catalog
1. Create tablespace specific for rman catalog
2. Create user schema specific for rman repository
3. Grant connect,resource,sysdba,recovery_catalog_owner roles to rmanuser
4. Now connect using RMAN utility
rman target rmanuser/password@sid catalog rmanuser/password@sid
5. On RMAN prompt now create the catalog using 'CREATE CATALOG' command
6. Register database;
Now RMAN catalog is ready. If you start taking backup the information about the backup sets will go to the catalog in the schema that you created. Controlfile is the default repository for RMAN. You can work with RMAN witout catalog aswell. For advantages/disadvantages go to http://oracle.com/technology
documentation section and download RMAN documents.

  • Getting errot "rman: can't open catalog"

    Hi,
I am using oracle 10.2.0.1 on Linux AS4 platform. To configure RMAN i am following the steps meintioned on websit "http://www.dbapool.com/forumthread/topic_97.html" I had created rman user with default tablespace as rman_ts and granted the privilage RECOVERY_CATALOG_OWNER.
At command prompt after sourceing the environment variable i typed the command "rman catalog rman/rman" i am getting the following error.
Can someone suggest me the way out for the error.
    Thanks

    Hi,
I am wondering why you are using a 8i specific article to configure a 10g database.
    The correct procedure is here:
    http://download.oracle.com/docs/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmcatdb001.htm
You will notice you need to run the
    CREATE CATALOG command.

  • PSE 12 - Can't open catalog - some internal programming error. Can NOT open PSE 12 organizer

Can not pass Catalog manager - Can't open catalog - sez an internal programming error occurred?????

Yes, it seems like a problem with the main catalog.  I haven't seen a failed conversion before that didn't write a conversion log.  So there aren't many clues to go on.  I have just one more suggestion -- run the utility psedbtool on your PSE 6 catalog:
    http://www.johnrellis.com/psedbtool/
Because you have both PSE 6 and 8 installed, you'll have to run it specially:
    1. Start PSE 6 and do Help > System Info to find the folder path of your PSE 6 catalog folder.
    2. Start a command prompt.
    3. Type these two commands:
    cd c:\psedbtool
    .\psedbtool -printVolumeTable > output.log
    4. Copy and paste the contents of c:\psedbtool\output.log here.

  • Can't open catalog

Hi, new to Lightroom so bear with me. Since I'm using Lightrom on my own desktop as well as at school, I have the catalog stored on an externel drive. I've opened it up from the external drive using several differnet computers but just now it won't let me open the catalog saying "The Lightroom catalog named "Stephen+Catalog" can't be opened because it is currently open in another application." As far as I know it is not open anywhere else. Plugged the external drive into another computer and got the same error message. Makes no sense. Help! Thanks in advance.

  • Can't open catalog- Lightroom in Virtualbox, Ubuntu host, Vista Guest

Hey, I'm running Ubuntu as my primary OS, w/ Vista running in Virtual box.  My LR catalog exists on my external drive with all my photos.  When I open Lightroom and browse for my catalog, it tells me it can't open a catalog from that location because it can't write there (or something to that affect).  Anyway, I created the shared folder with full access, and if I browse to that location from Vista (running in vbox) I can create/delete filese there, so I do have write access, but Lightroom doesn't think so.
Is there any simple way to fix this?
    Thanks,
    BM

    oooOOOOOoooohhhh.....
That makes a lot of sense to me now.  I know next to nothing about networks, except that you have to map drives to give them a letter...  And in my layman's understanding, shared folders from the host to hte guest are treated as network folders.
Ok...  Thanks.  So, even though I'm not really any closer to a solution (maybe a bit further off??), at least I  know why it's acting the way it is...
This is a funny problem- in that it's kind of on the border between a linux, adobe, and virtual box question.  I've got threads started on all the forums, you are the first to reply (it's been a couple of days now...).
I also have my computer in a dual boot so I'm not locked out of LR altogether, and for big jobs I'd rather be in a native os than cripple myself with a virtual machine, but for day to day quickie stuff, it'd be nice to not have to reboot to jump into lightroom for a 10min job.

  • LR2.7 second (new) laptop can't open catalog on external drive

I've installed and updated the same version of LR on a new laptop which I'm still setting up (Windows 7 Pro 64-bit). It sounds like it's ok to have two installs for one user at home, but the second one is still in trial mode so far. I wanted to see how much faster/better the new laptop handles the catalog which is on an external drive. The old laptop is Windows XP SP3 32-bit.
If I connect the external drive to the new laptop and try to open the catalog, it says it can't use the catalog "because it is not writable and cannot be opened.
This could be caused by incorrect permissions or because another Lightroom application is using the catalog...".
I am an Administrator on both machines. I don't see a lock file, and the Windows permissions for System and Administrators allow all (but Special Permissions is unchecked).
There are some photos on the old c: drive that I haven't copied over yet, but that shouldn't make a difference.
And I can still open the catalog on the old laptop.
    What should I do?
    Thanks in advance.

I hear that on Win 7, running as Administrator is not sufficient--you need to make sure that your account "owns" the files or directories that it's trying to access.
Also, with LR not running, check in the directory that the catalogue is in and if there's a file with a ".lock" extension, delete it.

  • Installed PSE 8 but can't open catalog :-(

I've installed PSE 8, upgrading from PSE 6.  When I open the catalog it tells me that there is an earlier version catalog and would I like to make it compatible with PSE 8, to which I answer yes, I gave it a new name and clicked ok.  It thinks for a long time and then I get a "not responding" message.  I can't get into the organizer to do the recommendation in the book to convert the catalog.  Any help greatly appreciated!

  • LR 3.2 - Can't open catalog: unexpected error

    I have a problem with LR 3.2 @ Win7 64bit:
"Suddenly" I am not able to open some catalogs, I recently created and used without any problems so far. If I open the catalog (via the open dialog or by directly clicking on the .lrcat), a splash sreen tells me, that there is an "unexpected error", and it just don't open. If I create a new empty catalog, I can import from the corrupted catalog.
Has anybody encountered a similar problem? What can I do? Is there a way to repair the catalog? Can I restore it with the backups?
    Dennis.

Bought Lightroom 3.2 two days ago. I have the same problem. Is yours already solved? What did you have to do? I already contacted the helpdesk but they sent me to technical support...

  • LR 2.2 - Can't open catalog  (AgLibraryRootFolder error)

I have a catalog that opens and works fine in LR 2.1. When I try to open it in LR 2.2, I get the dialog :
    Lightroom
Database "D:\Children.lrcat": column absolutePath is not unique
    Statement: INSERT INTO AgLibraryRootFolder( id_local, id_global, absolutePath, name, relativePathFromCatalog ) VALUES( ?, ?, ?, ?, ? );
    OK
I tried exporting the catalog to a new catalog, and get the same error when trying to open the exported catalog.
Any ideas how to go about fixing this ?
    Anthony

A reply from Adobe...I will not be able to test it out until next week. Hope y'all do well with it...
You may be able to resolve the issue by clearing the preferences files
for all versions of Photoshop Lightroom.
    To clear Lightroom preferences:
    - Quit all versions of Photoshop Lightroom.
    - Click the Start button and choose Run.
    - Type %appdata% (without the quotes) into the Open field and click
    OK.
    - Open the Adobe folder.
    - Open the Lightroom folder.
    - Open the Preferences folder.
    - Delete or rename the Lightroom 2 Preferences.agprefs, Lightroom
Preferences.agprefs file, and Silvertone Preferences.agprefs file, if
    there is one.
    - Restart Photoshop Lightroom.
If the issue continues to occur, it is likely that your Lightroom
catalog file is damaged. You may be able to resolve the issue by c
reating a new Lightroom catalog and then importing the data from the old catalog.
    To create a new catalog:
    - Launch Lightroom while holding the Ctrl key on your keyboard.
    - Click the Create New Catalog button.
    - Specify a name and location for the new catalog.
    - Click the Create button.
When Lightroom opens, use the File > Import from Catalog command and
then select your original catalog file to import the content of your
    original catalog.
If you receive an error when attempting to import the content from your catalog, import the data from a catalog backup file. The default
location of the Lightroom catalog backups is My
    Pictures\Lightroom\Backups.
I hope this information helps to resolve your issue.
If you require further assistance with this issue, please update your
web case with complete details, including what steps you have applied

  • My Catalog - "Can't open Database" error

After being able to open Photoshop Album Starter Edition successfully and without incident several months ago, one day I received this error:
"Problem opening the Catalog named "My Catalog". Another user or application may have the catalog open, or one or more files may be missing, out of date, or damaged. [Microsoft] [ODBC Microsoft Access 97 Driver] can't open database 'unknown'. It may not be a database that your application recognizes or the file may be corrupt. Attempt to compact and recover this catalog then try again? - OK or Cancel"
If I choose OK, then I get another error:
"Catalog Recovery Incomplete - A problem was encountered during catalog recovery. Your catalog may be ok, but if you experience problems with it that can't be resolved through the Reover Catalog option or restarting your computer system you may need to restore this catalog from a backup. - OK"
That goes to a 3rd error message:
"Unable to open "My Catalog because it is damaged. Please choose: Open existing or Create a new catalog named My Catalog-1.psa"
If I choose existing, it goes to the folder where My Catalog is stored, I can click it, and then I receive the first message. If I choose create a new catalog, it does, then gives me the first error message. PSA SE never opens, but the photo downloader appears in my Task bar Notification area, and I can Launch, Enable/Disable or Exit that program. If I try to acquire a photo, I end up with the same first error message.
I've seen the other threads that address what may be close to this issue, and I've done all the fixes suggested, short of reinstalling WindowsXP, which I'd rather avoid, but I've had no luck - I still get the exact same error messages.
I am using Office 97, including Access, Word, Excel, etc. but I'm not having any issues with those. I'm also using Pagemaker 7.0 and no issues there related to a catalog or database. I did have at one time a trial copy of Illustrator, and this problem started occurring after that trial was expired. I've since uninstalled Illustrator, done all the fixes suggested here, deleted the My Catalog files, restarted, uninstalled and re-installed PSA SE3.2, and still it cannot 'see' My Catalog.
Any other suggestions (besides upgrading to Office-this decade, which I would love, but employer hasn't made that leap yet.)? TIA
    Tracey

No, no multiple users on this machine, or on that application. Both are located on the C: drive of a computer with intranet and internet access.
Could it have anything to do with the application Microsoft Access? [Microsoft ODBC Access97 driver] is named in the first error message. Access97 was always on this computer, but it wasn't actually put into use until about 6-8 months ago, and it was sometime after I started using it that I could no longer open PSA-SE. Connection? Fixable?

  • Can I open Lightroom without upgrading my catalog?

Unfortunately I'm not sure how to do a screen capture, so I'll try to type what I'm seeing.
When I click on the LIghtroom icon, I get a message box that says "Please upgrade the catalog file "Lightroom Catalog 3" for use with Lightroom 3.  It continues "Lightroom will create a new catalog file in the destination indicated below.  The previews will also be moved to the location and converted for use in Lightroom 3"  Upgrade destination C:/Documents and Settings/...../Lightroom 3 Catalog-7.lrcat
There is a button to choose a different catalog, upgrade or exit.
When I open the button to change catalogs, it gives me one option, but when I click on it, I go back to the "Lightroom will create a new catalog"
My concern with upgrading is that I've a workflow for the catalog that's at C:/Documents and Settings/..../Lightroom 3 Catalog-5.lrcat  Earlier today, I clicked on the dialog that resulted in a catalog at Lightroom Catalog-6.lrcat, but when I opened it, I'd lost all the listings for the Free Agent drive (usually G:/ where I do my daily uploads.  I could still see the external hard drive (E:) where I save edited work, but it indicated that I would have to locate all of the folders I'd created on the E: drive.  I saw only the default collections on the left hand side -- (smart collections, last month, etc.).
I finally was able to get back to Lightroom 3 Catalog-5, which had all the work, but I'm not sure how to recover all my collections and folders if I Lightroom creates a new catalog at a destination that has a different number.  The problem is that now I can't seem to open Lightroom 3 at all -- when I click on Change, I don't see my catalog 5  in the default folder.  I know I found it once before, and it became an option on the pulldown menu.  But I don't want to have to keep finding it on the drive where I store it so I can keep my indexing and folder and catalog organization.
Lightroom 3 Catalog 5.lrcat works fine for me.  My default for backing up is whenever I close the program, so I'm confident in it's integrity.  How can I open Lightroom with the catalog that works for me --without getting messages that seem to force me to do an upgrade I don't want to do.
    Thanks for your help!

I've been using Lightroom 3 for about a year.    Right now I'm going
back to the folder with my backups and opening Lightroom 3 Catalog-5.  I
think I've tried to reconstruct my left side panel with earlier
Lightroom 3 Catalog x versions.  I don't have all the collections and
folders I had with my Lightroom 2 catalog.    That catalog seemed to
have been corrupt when I moved to Lightroom 3.  I don't recall how I did
it, but I guess I imported the photos and tried to start over with my
    collections.

  • I can't open Lightroom 5 in Windows 7 notes Catalog Error

I can't open Lightroom 5 in Windows 7. I keep getting a window titled "Confirm" and it notes an "Unexpected error opening catalog" and "The catalog could not be opened due to an unextected error".
    3 choices come up:
Try Again          Choose A Different Cataog          Exit
I pick Try Again and it keeps cycling back
I pick choose a different Catalog and I get another window with my last Catalog and nothing else. I get 4 options:
Choose A Different Catalog          Create A New Catalog          Open          Quit
The last catalog is the only one that is in this Window and is thus the only one selected. I try to Open it and it cycles again. I try to choose a different one and I can select older Catalogs but nothing happens. I try to create a new Catalog and I can do so but when I create one it's as though it was never created as I can't find it anywhere. Please help!

I see that this was a while ago, and that you never received a reply....but did you figure out a solution? I'm experiencing the same thing.
