RMAN level 2 backup in Oracle 10gR2

Does RMAN in 10gR2 can only do level 0 and level 1 incremental backups now there is nothing called level 2 anymore, at least that's what the doc says.
But I took level 0 after the upgrade on sunday and today morning the RMAN script as per schedule took a level 2 backup without any error. Does this mean RMAN still supports level 2 backups.
Is my level 2 backup reliable or do I have to take another Level 0 just to be on the safe side, please advice.

---Duplicate post, I didn't realize that there was an exclusive RMAN group and I posted in the database general group----------

The level 2 were used until the version 9i. In the version 10g is only used options 0 and 1, as documentation.
The option 0 is used for full backups (base line), and option 1 is used for incremental backups [differential (default) or cumulative].
But the level 2 is used for compatibility with old versions and it doesn't have to generate errors.

  • Rman cold backup for oracle rac

    Hi experts;
    I want to create a cold backup for an oracle 10g rac DB.
    It has 2 nodes, it's not in archive log, this will be the next step.
    But now, I want to backup before to proceed.
    My doubts are:
    I need to shutdown the both nodes?
    If yes:
    I need to startup nomount just in one node?
    If there any document with this specifics steps?
    Thanks for your help.
    Al

    Cold backups are done with the DB completely shut down.
    For RAC the data files are used by all nodes in the cluster.
    You need to shut down all instances in the RAC.
    Then use your OS utilities or RMAN to do the backup.

  • Rman level 1 is taking same time as level 0 in oracle 9i

    Hi experts,
    what is exact difference b/w incremental backup(level 1) in oracle 9i/10g,
    out prod db is oracle 9.2.0.8,
    we are planing to implement rman on production but we have tested one of test db,
    but it has taken same time as full backup(level 0)..level 1 nothing but only changed blocks why it's taking same full backup time..
    what is the main reason behind that plz help me .

    Oracle 10g has block change tracking feature - a file that tracks all changed DB blocks is continuously maintained. That file enables RMAN (10g) to read only the blocks that have changes since the most recent full backup. The feature could bring huge performance improvements for incremental backups. A negative would be slightly slow down DMLs during DB operation.

  • RMAN 0 level backup failed while releasing channels at end.

    In RMAN 0 level backup, when it's about to finish, reports an error as releasing channels. It backed up about 98% datafiles.
    Is this backup is usable. As we can not affort to take backup again as it's a big terabyte databse.
    Please suggest.
    Thanks in advance.
    Aj.

    Do you have release stmts in the script
    From 9i onwards oracle Release the channels automatically upon backing up, so you can remove the release channel lines if you have and try it

  • RMAN Automatic backup/recovery with oracle fail safe, windows cluster

    Hello,
    I have question,
    1) Whether it is possible to do "RMAN Automatic Backup and recovery" in environment as ?
    Environment: -
    a. Windows clustering with windows server 2003 Enterprise Edition R2 (Two Node Clustering)
    b. Shared disk ( RAID )
    c. Oracle 10g standard edition one
    d. Oracle fail safe v3.3.3 (for redundancy)
    Here we have single oracle instance operating on single database whose files are located on shared disk.
    2) If answer to above question is yes please specify if there is some good documentation to it.
    Any help regarding this will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance,
    Rahul

    You just need to make sure that the RMAN scripts are always able to connect to the target database instance whether instance runs on cluster node 1 or cluster node 2
    here, If oracle services(resources) will shift from Node1 to Node2 (due to media or any failure) during RMAN Backup then there will be break in connection, will it destroy my backup or will it get started automatically without any harm?
    and also I want to know,
    Do we need to setup another server which will have RMAN backup script running?

  • RMAN / backup.  oracle 9 vs. oracle 10

    My colleague mentioned a while ago that we had to investigate RMAN &/or a backup client, "because in oracle 10, when doing an export of a live db, oracle does not switch into "single user mode" like it did in 9. So we couldn't have 100% faith in our .dmp file."
    I'd like to do some further research on this, but looking through the "Oracle 10 Complete reference" and googling - I don't see any information about it. Has anyone here dealt with this or know of a link I should see?
    Finally... Does anyone know if an RMAN backup for Oracle 10 accounts for any "in progres" transactions?
    Thanks in advance,
    Mike.

    Oracle, itself, doesn't switch to single user mode.
    Your colleague might have been talking of scripts which shutdown and restart the
    database in restricted mode to run an export of the database.
    RMAN backups as in 8.0/8i/9i/10g (or EBU in Oracle 7) and scripted (aka
    "user managed") backups are all physical backups. They take database blocks
    "as they are". Conceptually, the datafile backups aren't aware of active transactions.
    It is the redo stream in the archivelogs that is required for you to be able to restore
    and recreate a consistent database image.

  • RMAN backup in ORACLE RAC database

    Hi there,
    We are using RMAN backup strategy for taking backups from one node(eg.node1).Database is RAC database, version 9.2.3. and OS is Solaris 5.10.
    this is the configuration which we use, as follows:
    Connecting to Prod.Database using catalog database.
    rman catalog=rman/rman@CATDB target=sys/oracle@PRODDB(node 2).
    RMAN> show all;
    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 30;
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION ON;
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK; # default
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO '/rmanback/_%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 5;
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL DEVICE TYPE DISK FORMAT '/rmanback/CMWPROD_%s.bak';
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK CONNECT 'SYS/oracle@PRODDB(node2)';
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO 7 G;
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO '/oracle/9.2.3/dbs/snapcf_CMWPROD1.f';
    As the above config shows RMAN is connecting to PROD DB (node 2). But we need to take backups (datafiles and as well as archive logs) from two nodes (i.e from node 1 and as well as node 2).
    Is there any possibility for taking backups from two nodes?
    Thanks,
    Balu.

    PLease copy here the entire error stack. RMAN never gives just a sngle line error message. Its a series of error messages and looking all of them would be helpful to say something useful.

  • Configuring rman backup for oracle on rac cluster

    Hi GURUS
    We are buying installation oracle rac on a two node server. We do backup our db using rman and TSM .
    Does anyone have any guidance on using TSM scheduled TDP backups with
    Oracle RAC multi-node?
    More to that, is it possible to have multiple archive log destination?
    Any advice would be appreciated.
    David

    While you can have archives going to different destinations, on different nodes, it is not advisable because if these destinations are not reachable in case of a node/system failure, you have no access to these archive logs.
    Actually for easy accesibility it would be better to place the archive logs of all instnaces on shared storage. If you are using ASM and using a FRA disk group, you may want to have your archives go into this location.
    NFS mounting filesystems could be slower and may have certain perforamance implications.

  • Rman level

    hi all
    i would like to know the how many level of rman backup is available
    increment level 0 and increment level 1 and increment level 2
    how all this are differ from each other or what is the difference between this and what name we can use for instance differential incremental or cumulative incremental for level 1 and level 2
    Regards

    <from-documentation>
    Incremental backups can be either level 0 or level 1. A level 0 incremental backup, which is the base for subsequent incremental backups, copies all blocks containing data, backing the datafile up into a backup set just as a full backup would.
    The only difference between a level 0 incremental backup and a full backup is that a full backup is never included in an incremental strategy.

    After your RESTORE the (standby) controlfile, you must MOUNT the database instance with "ALTER DATABASE MOUNT".
    You can also then query the controlfile with a "LIST BACKUP" or "LIST BACKUP SUMMARY" in RMAN to see if the deseired backups have been cataloged in the controlfile.
    Don't specify the format for the ALLOCATE CHANNEL when you RESTORE DATABASE. In fact, you don't need to ALLOCATE CHANNEL at all when the device type is the default value of DISK if your are on 10gR2 or above.

  • RMAN - Incremental backup / NOARCHIVELOG / Restore & Recover Until Cancel

    I'm testing out a weekly plan as follows:
    Sun : Shutdown db, RMAN level 0 Incremental Backup
    Mon-Sat: Shutdown db, RMAN level 1 Incremental Backup.
    The database is NOARCHIVELOG mode and is 10.2 XE.
    I then run a restore (which I understand to be to move the datafiles from the backup set to their online location). My next aim is to do a recover.
    I'm really confused at this point. Say I take the backup the night before (either a level 0 or 1, I'm assuming that this makes no difference) then in the morning I drop a table accidentally. Okay - I want to go back to the position after the backup. When I do recover, I understand that Oracle applies redo logs written since the backup.
    So I don't want a recover, I want a recover until cancel. When I issue this command it is suggesting that I use an archive log file. Well obviously I don't have any of those so I press cancel thinking that this will bring me back to the point EXACTLY AFTER THE NIGHTLY BACKUP and with my table back. But it doesn't!
    I would be really grateful if anyone has a definitive answer to this - what are the steps to recover a database to the point after the backup was taken ignoring any changes since the backup.
    Thanks all.
    Tom.

    Hi Werner
    Do you mean if the online logs are available with the changes after the last backup until the database restore then there is a possibility to apply changes? Ie at this point I could put in the redo log names instead of the archive log names.
    If they have been overwritten since the backup (ie cycled round completely) then is the behaviour to restore the database and then not apply any logs?
    Do you know if this is documented anywhere? There seems to be an emphasis on ARCHIVELOG mode only, especially in the books I have seen.
    Thanks,
    Tom

  • RMAN level 0 and level 1 tablespace/database relationships

    If I take an incremental level 0 backup of an entire database and then take a level 0 of an individual tablespace, does an incremental level 1 backup of that tablespace reference the incremental level 0 of the tablespace or of the entire database? If I change the order of the level 0 backups, does it change the reference of the tablespace's level 1?
    I guess what I'm asking is does the the level 1 incremental reference the latest level 0 regardless of whether it's for the whole database or just the tablespace or does a level 1 always reference it's own level 0?
    Also, if I take a level 0 of the database Sunday night, and then a level 1 of the database every night after that as well as multiple level 1s of a tablespace throughout each day, will Tuesday night's database level 1 include all of Monday's tablespace level 1s?
    I just can't seem to find oracle documentation about these relationships.

    RMAN tracks backups at the datafile level.I think that is exactly what I was looking for. I just want to clarify my understanding.
    If I run a level 0 on the database Sunday night, a database differential level 1 each night, and a level 0 on a specific tablespace each morning at 6AM followed by hourly tabelspace differential incrementals only for that tablespace, then Monday night's level 1 will be an incremental of the entire database pointing to Sunday's level 0 except for that specific tablespace for which it will be incremental from that tablespace's last level 1. Does that sound right? If so, then it sounds like to restore the entire database to its state on Tuesday at noon from media, I have to put these backups back on disk before running the RMAN restore:
    - database level 0 from Sunday
    - Monday night's database level 1
    - Tuesday's tablespace level 0
    - Tuesday's tablespace level1s from 7AM - noon
    This means I can avoid putting Monday's tabelspace incrementals back right? From what I gather, the RMAN restore will put the blocks back into the datafiles at their correct SCNs, and then if there are any archive logs after that point in time, the RMAN recover will apply them. Does that all sound correct?
