    RMAN Channel is a communication pipeline between a RMAN executable and a target or auxiliary database.
    To manually allocate a Maintenance channel in preparation for issuing a CHANGE, DELETE,or CROSSCHECK command. Note that if you use CONFIGURE to set up automatic channels, then RMAN can use these automatic channels for maintenance operations; you do not have to manually allocate them.

  • Back in time with rman ?

    Hi,
    I have a rman set of backups from an Oracle database. The database is ok, only the user wants to have that older stand of the data, so I must go back in time.
    The rman script to generate the backups is as follows:
    rman target sys/manager@EON1 catalog rman/rman@rman << EOF >> $LOG 2>&1
    run {
    configure retention policy to redundancy 2;
    # debug on;
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup incremental level 0
    skip inaccessible filesperset 10 noexclude
    format '/u0/oracle/backup/INCR_%s_%p'
    database include current controlfile;
    release channel d1;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    allocate channel d1 type disk;
    backup skip inaccessible filesperset 50
    format '/u0/oracle/backup/ARCH_%s_%p'
    archivelog all delete all input;
    release channel d1;
    report obsolete;
    delete noprompt obsolete;
    allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
    crosscheck backup;
    release channel;
    allocate channel for delete type disk;
    delete noprompt expired backup;
    release channel;
    EOF
    My database world is Sybase, a little bit Oracle skills too but no rman.
    Can anybody describe me the steps to restore that backup set?
    Thanks a lot.
    Daniel S

    1. shutdown and backup your database (!!!).
    2. start in umount mode
    3. rman target sys/manager@EON1 catalog rman/rman@rman
    4. at the RMAN prompt perform a point in time restore/recover, e.q.:
    restore database until time "to_date('19.01.2009 13:00:00','DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";
    recover database until time "to_date('19.01.2009 13:00:00','DD.MM.YYYY HH24:MI:SS')";

    Hello guys..
    I installed Oracle 10gR2 on solaris 10, and created a sample DB called HEAT. This database is configured to run in Archivelog mode and also created Flash_recovery_area.
    Iam trying to take a simple backup thru RMAN using OEM ( Database Control). there is only 1 database on that server and i plan to use controlfile instead of recovery catalog.
    Now here are the steps when i execute, i get an ERROR.
    1. connected as 'sys' from Database Control.
    2. Went to Maintenence Tab, click in Backup settings.
    3. click on Device Tab, enter OS credentials and click on "Test disk backup"..
    4. I get an error that says "Disk Backup Test Failed!"
    When click on View Error Details :

    I only have 1 database , and it is configured to backup using Control file and not Recovery catalog ( which is the default)...
    What additional steps do i have to do, to take a simple backup using database control ? I am not sure why it says Database not available...while DB is indeed available and open.
    any help is appreciated..
    thanks

    I, too, am receiving these same errors when I do my backups. The sysadmin took the systems down over the weekend and the backup has failed ever since. Database is up, ORACLE_SID looks fine, what could be wrong? This nightly backup worked before system went down. I can connect as sysdba using the ORACLE_SID as set.
    Thanks,
    Candy

  • Can I call an external program from my rman script

    Hi
    Is it possible to do an external call to a bat-file in a rman script?
    My script looks like this (it's pretty much generated from EM):
    $rman_script="backup device type disk tag '%TAG' database;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    backup device type disk tag '%TAG' archivelog all not backed up delete all input;
    allocate channel for maintenance type disk;
    delete noprompt obsolete device type disk;
    release channel;
    Can i somehow make an external call before at the end?
    Regards
    Klaus Mogensen

    You can use the HOST command.

  • RMAN retention policy - backup spfile and then redundancy = 5 removes it.

    I have a database that is Oracle Standard Edition and it is version 9.2.0.6.
    The spfile has not changed since November, 2005. A list backup does not show an spfile backup with a tag of "hot_database_spfile_backup_full". I took a close look at the RMAN script log and was shocked to discover that the spfile backup from the current day is being deleted. Is that because of the redundancy = 5? I'm trying to figure out why a backup piece from the current day is being deleted?
    Examples follow.
    The script deletes obsolete with redundancy = 5, however, I believe the intent was to keep 25 days because one of the configure clauses is set to a recovery window of 25 days. I realize that the redundancy overrides the configure retention policy command. I can fix the script and remove the redundancy = 5.
    In the RMAN run statement, I first resync the catalog, backup the spfile, a full backup of the database including current controlfile plus archive log (delete input), resync catalog, switch logfile, and backup any additional archive logs. The backup looks fine.
    Then, I allocate a channel for maintenance type sbt. The script then has a "delete noprompt expired backup;" a "delete noprompt obsolete redundancy = 5;" and finally, a crosscheck;
    example of backup piece that is later deleted:
    Starting backup at 07/18/2006 20:00:14
    channel t1: starting full datafile backupset
    channel t1: specifying datafile(s) in backupset
    including current SPFILE in backupset
    channel t1: starting piece 1 at 07/18/2006 20:00:14
    channel t1: finished piece 1 at 07/18/2006 20:00:15
    piece handle=P*****_2338_1_596145614_FULL comment=API Version 2.0,MMS Version 5.2.0.0
    channel t1: backup set complete, elapsed time: 00:00:01
    Finished backup at 07/18/2006 20:00:15
    deletion:
    Deleting the following obsolete backups and copies:
    Type Key Completion Time Filename/Handle
    <other lines deleted>
    Backup Set 27453 07/18/2006 20:00:14
    Backup Piece 27454 07/18/2006 20:00:14
    P*****_2338_1_596145614_FULL
    deleted backup piece
    backup piece handle=P*****_2338_1_596145614_FULL recid=2039 stamp=596145614
    Deleted 12 objects
    Why is a backup piece created on 7/18 being deleted in the maintenance step?
    Thanks in advance!

    In the next step in the script, the controlfile and spfile are backed up:
    backup
    full
    skip inaccessible
    tag hot_database_backup_full
    format '%d_%s_%p_%t_FULL'
    (Database
    include current controlfile)
    Plus Archivelog delete input;
    Even though my backup script is redundant by backing up the spfile twice, when I list the backup of the spfile, I would have expected to find 5 backups with a tag of hot_database_spfile_backup_full and 5 with a tag of hot_database_backup_full. That is not the case. I only find spfiles with a tag of hot_database_backup_full. i am still perplexed by RMAN.
    I will modify my script - remove the backup of the spfile, and crosscheck before the delete commands. I will also remove the redundancy = 5. The intent is to keep 25 days of backups.
    Thanks for your comments

  • Rman backup - how to preserve the file names exactly when backing up?

    Hi,
    I have been using RMAN for backup and I want to change things so that it is
    easier to go back to the old tried-and-true method of recovery by recreating
    a control file manually via the trace file, which lists the files out individually.
    The first change - to change from compression to copy.. is fine.
    But even then, rman names the files some weird name.
    I am not trying this- using the disk format command is supposed to work..
    rman nocatalog << EOF
    connect target;
    allocate channel for maintenance type disk parallelism 1 \
    format '/agile/ora_flash_recovery_area/PECHA/backupset/backup/%U';
    backup as copy database;
    release channel;
    but it still is using wierd (auto-generated) names for the data files as it backs up.
    Has anyone else got this working? Thanks Marvin.

    Ok here is why I would like exact filenames..
    1) to speed the time of recovery. I am much more familiar with traditional recovery methods than RMAN, and while I myself installed and suggested RMAN for backups, our other (11i) database does not use RMAN and so I am more familiar with traditional recovery. So to be able to recover quickly I want to have these files as close as possible to the original names so that I can use my standard script (from a trace file) to recreate the control fiile. If I can get RMAN to spit out the filies with original names but keep RMAN for making the backup, I may ditch the rman bacjup script in chron and write a traditional hot backup script which copies the files the old fashioned way.
    2) to reduce cloning time. The RMAN duplicate command is not as good as I thought. I was actually easier for me to restore RMAN backups first to a box that has all the same paths, and THEN shutdown (cold) these files and copy them cold to another server, and restore from there. Agaiin if I can get the original file names, I could choose to do recovery either way (RMAN or traditional) in a real emergency instead of being forced to use rman.
    3) to be able to switch to a backup file in the FRA without having to rename it. Seems logical if it is already named correctly.
    thanks ! Marvi

  • Can RMAN backup and export datapump executed at the same time?

    Hello,
    I have several databases that I backup using RMAN and export datapump everynight starting at 6PM and end at Midnight. The backup maintenance window doesn't give me enough time for each database to run at different time. I am using crontab to schedule my backups. Since I have so many databases that need to be backed up between 6PM - Midnight, some of the export and RMAN backup scripts will execute almost at the same time. My question is can my export data pump and RMAN backup scripts run at the same time?
    Thank you in advance.
    John

    Needs must. If you don't run expdp parallel then it doesn't use that much. If it was really killing the system then look into setting up a Resource plan that knocks that user down but this is a big step.
    I woud better look into using Rman
    system incrementals, and block change tracking, to minimize your RMAN time.
    Regards
    If your shop needs to do both simultaneously then go for it.
    Chris.
    PS : One of my shops has maybe 20-30 rmans and pumps all kicking off some simultaneous, some not, from 0000 to 0130. No complaints from users and no problems either. Go for it.

  • RMAN Retention Policies

    We are looking for two retention policies for our backups. 30 days retention for all backups on TAPE and 7 days retention on all backups on DISK. If we set retention policy to 30, disk couldn't accommodate all backups on disk at the same time, we need backups on tape for at least 30 days.
    Any ideas?

    You would have some block of code in your script to delete obsolete backups... replace that with two commands (one global and one for disk). You would still have retention policy for 30 days
    RMAN TARGET /
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO RECOVERY WINDOW OF 30 DAYS;
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL FOR MAINTENANCE DEVICE TYPE DISK;
    ALLOCATE CHANNEL FOR MAINTENANCE DEVICE TYPE SBT;
    DELETE FORCE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE;
    DELETE FORCE NOPROMPT OBSOLETE RECOVERY WINDOW OF 7 DAYS DEVICE TYPE DISK;

  • RMAN-20260 error while trying to delete a backup piece

    Hello,
    In my company we use Oracle 10g, backup managed by RMAN and integrated with TSM.
    In order to remove the old backup files, there is a delete script to do this.
    Basically this script:
    connect to RMAN catalog
    allocate channel for maintenance device type 'sbt_tape'
    change backuppiece <file names from rc_backup_piece older than 35 days> delete;
    When this command is run, this error is being generated:
    RMAN-03002: failure of delete command at 01/18/2010 17:14:00
    RMAN-06004: ORACLE error from recovery catalog database: RMAN-20260: backup piece not found in the recovery catalog
    RMAN-06092: error while looking up backup piece
    Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance.
    Fer

    Hy Tycho,
    Yes, it's a tape backup.
    This is the channel used to take the backup:
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/opt/tsm..../...opt)';
    I tried this rman command with a file name that is 35 days older in rc_backup_piece:
    list backuppiece <file name>;
    I received this error:
    RMAN-20260: backup piece not found in the recovery catalog;
    How can this file be in the rc_backup_piece and not appear in the list backuppiece ?
    Thanks a lot.

    I tried lot to delete the obsolete backup.. and I searched good every thing... plz suggest me..

    RMAN-06091: no channel allocated for maintenance (of an appropriate type)
    Cause: A command was entered that requires a maintenance channel, and no maintenance channel is allocated, or none of the appropriate type.

  • Rman Multiple Retention

    Hi All,
    I'm new in RMAN and Currently we have 14 days retention policy for daily and weekly backup.
    In the same time we also will have 186days retention for monthly backup, that's mean its should be recoverable around that 3 month (for monthly).
    My question is, What should I put the scripts for monthly backup ?
    I saw some example its for offline backup:
    BACKUP DATABASE UNTIL 'SYSDATE+365' NOLOGS;
    But I want the backup should be online ?
    Currently our weekly backup like this
    #!/bin/bash
    # SID= env | grep ORACLE_SID | cut -c12-15
    export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/BWD/112_64
    export ORACLE_SID=BWD
    LOGFILE=/tmp/BWD-weekly-`date +%y%m%d%H%M`.out
    echo>> $LOGFILE
    chmod 666 $LOGFILE
    echo Script $0>> $LOGFILE
    echo ==== started on `date` ====>> $LOGFILE
    echo>> $LOGFILE
    rman target / << !EOF >> $LOGFILE
    allocate channel for maintenance type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    release channel;
    run
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup as compressed backupset
    incremental level 0 cumulative
    TAG SMQ_LEVEL0_WEEKLY_BACKUP
    format 'weekly_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'
    filesperset 5
    database plus archivelog delete input;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    crosscheck backup;
    release channel t1;
    And Daily backup:
    #!/bin/bash
    SID=EPD
    export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/$SID/112_64
    export ORACLE_SID=$SID
    #LOGFILE=/tmp/EPD-weekly-`date +%y%m%d%H%M`.out
    LOGFILE=/tmp/$SID-daily-`date +%y%m%d%H%M`.out
    echo>> $LOGFILE
    chmod 666 $LOGFILE
    echo Script $0>> $LOGFILE
    echo ==== started on `date` ====>> $LOGFILE
    echo>> $LOGFILE
    rman target / << !EOF >> $LOGFILE
    allocate channel for maintenance type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    release channel;
    run
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup as compressed backupset
    incremental level 1 cumulative
    TAG EPD_LEVEL1_DAILY_BACKUP
    format 'daily_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'
    filesperset 5
    database plus archivelog delete input;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    crosscheck backup;
    release channel t1;
    Appreciate if anyone has more experience to share with me the best aproach for this.

    Hi,
    I would change some things in your script.
    It would create a routine for the backup of archivelogs separately ... every X hours (this is highly recommended).
    When you perform a backup with the option 'LOGS' the archivelogs required to restore that backup will be maintained automatically. (ie The archivelogs will obey the policy Backup FULL with KEEP option).
    rman target / << !EOF >> $LOGFILE
    allocate channel for maintenance type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    crosscheck archivelog all;
    release channel;Why you are executing CROSSCHECK of ARCHIVELOG on each backup execution?
    I recommend you run this command only when necessary and manually. Because the ARCHVELOGS must be there. If archivelog is not on directory this can compromise your backup.
    If you run the crosscheck automatically you can invalidade your backup if you don't know where is that archivelog wich is missing. Because CROSSCHECK will mark the missing ARCHIVELOG as EXPIRED and the BACKUP will execute successful but during RESTORE you will need that ARCHIVELOG and during recover database may fail.
    I recommend execute crosscheck command manually and only after the error was raised on the logs. i.e Backup must fail to know what's going on. As maintenance operation if necessary we should run CROSSCHECK manually.
    run
    allocate channel t1 type 'sbt_tape' parms
    'ENV=(tdpo_optfile=/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/tdpo.opt)';
    backup as compressed backupset
    incremental level 0 cumulative
    TAG SMQ_LEVEL0_WEEKLY_BACKUP
    format 'weekly_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'
    filesperset 5
    database plus archivelog delete input;
    sql 'alter system archive log current';
    crosscheck backup;
    release channel t1;
    }The command "sql 'alter system archive log current';" is not required since RMAN do it automatically when start backup of archivelogs. And even if this was necessary this command should be executed before start backup of archivelogs. So you should execute BACKUP DATABASE ... separately from PLUS ARCHVELOG...
    e.g :
    1° (BACKUP DATABASE ... )
    2° (sql 'Alter system archivelog...)
    3° (Backup Archivelog all delete...)
    I recommend also you format the Backup (BACKUPPIECE) of ARCHIVELOG.
    backup as compressed backupset
    incremental level 0 cumulative
    TAG SMQ_LEVEL0_WEEKLY_BACKUP
    format 'weekly_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'
    filesperset 5
    database plus archivelog
    format 'ARC_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'  delete input;Create a script to do Backup of Archivelgos at least each 3 hours
    Backup ARCHIVELOG ALL TAG 'ARC_DATE' FORMAT  'ARC_%d_set%s_piece%p_%T_%U'  delete input;As you need recover database in any point time in a window of 3 month you can do that:
    backup database tag monthly_SMQ  keep until time 'sysdate+168';The all archivelogs required for recover this backup will automatically be maintained.

  • RMAN scripts & variables/parameters

    Hi
    We are using RMAN with TSM. There are a number of 9i and 8i databases. I tried to set the environment up to with as few scripts as possible to cover the variety of databases. I provide various variables/parameters to handle the differences between the various databases.
    In the 9i environment I "CONFIGURE" as much as possible to avoid setting changes in the actual backup script. That gives me a fairly clean generic backup script which also avoids manual channel allocations ie :
    run
    backup incremental level=0
    not backed up since time='SYSDATE-(8/24)'
    check logical
    filesperset=4
    format='/LVL0_%d_%T_%U'
    (database include current controlfile)
    plus archivelog format '/ARC_%d_%T_%U' delete all input;
    However due to the lack of "CONFIGURE" in 8i I cannot configure automatic channels. Therefor my script has to change to :
    run
    allocate channel ch01 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch02 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch03 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch04 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    backup incremental level=0
    check logical
    filesperset=4
    format='/LVL0_%d_%T_%U'
    (database include current controlfile)
    (archivelog all format '/ARC_%d_%T_%U' delete input);
    release channel ch01;
    release channel ch02;
    release channel ch03;
    release channel ch04;
    I have multiple database instances on the same server & would like to have a single generic script with a variable/parameter to change the "tdpo.opt" file for each instance. The alternate is to have a complete set of scripts for each DB instance with everything hard coded.
    The question is : Can I pass variables/parameters to a RMAN script? If yes, how do I go about it?
    Maybe there are other ideas out there to do this. The key to me in this whole execise is to reduce maintenance & increase flexibility.
    Your responses will be appreciated
    CM

    I was hoping to get away from building part of the backup script ie the channel allocation in the RMAN statement.Don't know how you expect to do this when it's required for 8i databases ?
    Well since you are looking to accommodate 8i & 9i database and you need to manually allocate channels for the 8i databases, then you could configure your script to include an IF..THEN block that will run one set of RUN commands if the database name that is passed in is in a certain list and run the other RUN block if it isn't. You could maintain two "here document" blocks, one for 8i and one for 9i. Therefore, all of the commands can reside in one generic script.
    For example, you could configure your single, generic script as:
    # add your logic checking here to see if a 9i database sid
    # was passed in as a parameter.  If so run the following code
    rman target / log=${sid}bkp_log append << !1
    run
    backup incremental level=0
    not backed up since time='SYSDATE-(8/24)'
    check logical
    filesperset=4
    format='/LVL0_%d_%T_%U'
    (database include current controlfile)
    plus archivelog format '/ARC_%d_%T_%U' delete all input;
    !1
    # if not run the following (ie. 8i databases)
    rman target / log=${sid}bkp_log append << !2
    run
    allocate channel ch01 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch02 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch03 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    allocate channel ch04 type 'sbt_tape' parms 'ENV=(TDPO_OPTFILE=/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin/tdpo_${ORACLE_SID}.opt)';
    backup incremental level=0
    check logical
    filesperset=4
    format='/LVL0_%d_%T_%U'
    (database include current controlfile)
    (archivelog all format '/ARC_%d_%T_%U' delete input);
    release channel ch01;
    release channel ch02;
    release channel ch03;
    release channel ch04;
    !2then you could call this generic script with the appropriate command line parameters.
    Hope I'm following your explanation/requirement.
