RMAN on RedHat AS4

I have been trying to set up RMAN to tape, I have a HP
sureshot DAT24 which is certified and can't get it to work.
There was no libobt.so ( tape library ) in the oracle home/lib
directory and I couldn't get secure backup to work either
because the /dev/obt0 device complained of no default
library... I read all the doc, 9i came with a copy of legato
which was great and oracle has said that you don't need
a 3rd party a backup like legato or veritas with 10G but
I can't seem to get this to work on RedHat AS4. Does
anybody have this working?

I believe an version of 9i came with legato LSSV ( single user )
one the disk ( buried you have to dig for it ) then EMC bought
legato and that was the end of that. I have been using rman
for years in various configurations but still have a lot more
confidence in a straight os cold back using shell scripts
in a complete high stress full on disaster situation
meaning no catalog, control files and no database id readily
available. If you have the SID id you can restore using RMAN.
On that note you would not believe the amount of folks I see using
RMAN and don't back up the rman database or catalogs as well as
the media library catalogs as well ( legato, veritas... ) . If you loose
you media library index in a disaster and its not restorable you are
toast and rman is useless because your media library will not be
able to find on tape where your backup is unless you can do this
manually.
Oracle has since stated that 10g would provide the ability to
go directly to tape without a media library, I have tested this
with a supported drive with secure backup and once set up
the /lib/libobt0.so still complains of missing native drivers when I
use the obtar command from obtool prompt after going through the
entire installob.
Others have stated without a media library you can only rman to disk.
I will set secure backup up again ( its still considered beta )
and try it with a virtual media library but since it complained
that the oracle libobt.so was missing tape libraries I doubt it
will work. I don't understand why I can't just use the /lib/st0
raw device... I did see sort of some doc about setting up a raw
device but didn't see in the doc where you would specifically
set this up.

RedHat AS4 and Oracle 10R2 upgrade - performance issue

Hi all,
As part of our database upgrade project (from Oracle 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3), we decided to upgrade our OS as well (RedHat AS4 from Update 2 to Update 4, 64-bit). We are in testing phase now and having some serious performance issues.
These below are steps that we have performed:
1. Ran db load testing plus Application Regression testing in order to get a baseline
2. Upgraded RH AS4 from Update 2 to Update 4
3. Ran db load testing plus Application Regression testing
4. Database load testing (including massive parallel processes, like 'insert into ...', 'create indexes ...parallel',etc ...) showed significant slowdown compared to our 'baseline' test (Update 2): 70-80%. The database is still Oracle 10.2.0.1, only RH was updated at this point
5. We upgraded Oracle 10.2.0.1 to 10.2.0.3, latest CPU , etc ...(Update 4 on OS side) still same slowdown in performances ...
6. Our Application Regression Testing has showed performance degradation also but not in same extent as db load test (10-20 % on different application modules)
7. We also did one more thing : went back and upgraded Oracle with Update 2 (some 'workarounds' were required but that's another story). Performances were OK. So it seems our problem is not (directly) related to Oracle version.
Now we are going to install Update 6 (the latest update for AS4) and see how it goes.
If anybody have any experience or idea about this case and want to share it with us, it would be highly appreciated.

Just a quick update for those who follow this thread ...
Everything worked fine with 'Update 6' kernel (both Oracle 10.2.0.1 and 10.2.0.3). We have also applied all available security packages.

Oracle 9206 on Redhat AS4:dbca does not create db - only prompt summary

Dear All,
SOS, Help is greatly appreciated and thanks in advance.
I followed the : "Installing Oracle 9i on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Advanced Server 4, 3, 2.1, and on Red Hat 9, 8.0, 7.3, 7.2, 7.1 (x86) " from http://www.puschitz.com/
Everything went fine till I tried to create db via dbca.
I run dbca and does not experienced the line 124 error. And it seems run fine. I can go through all steps but can't proceed when I arrive the final step : "Create Database" (The STep 7), The "Next" botton is gray out, I can only click "Finish". Once I click "Finish", it prompted summary report. But then nothing happened. If I close the summary report, what only I can do is to click "Finish" again and the summary was prompted again.
So I am in this situation: dbca only reported what to do in summary but never do it!

Problem with RMAN on Oracle8.1.7 on Redhat Linux 6.2

Hi, does anyone who is using Oracle with the configuration listed below having problems running RMAN?
- Redhat 6.2 with kernel upgraded to 2.2.16-3
- Oracle 8.1.7 EE for Linux
I don't seem to be able to start RMAN even though I have enable LARGE_POOL_SIZE in the parameter file.
Whenever I type rman at the prompt, it just hangs!
If I issue rman catalog rman/rmancatdb, it will return with an error saying can't connect to catalog.
I got these messages when creating the recovery catalog for the 1st time.
I suspect its the rman executable that is playing pranks with me. I even issue "relink all" and still can't run rman.
If anyone know a solution to this please reply. Thanks.

Its funny...I found a solution to my problem from oracle metalink.
if anyone face the same problem you can see the solution here.
The solution is....check your PATH in .bash_profile
Make sure the $ORACLE_HOME/bin is specified before the $PATH so that it can call the right Oracle rman executable. This is becoz Linux has a command by the same name rman.
The Oracle metalink explanation is below.
On typing rman at the command prompt, the process goes for a hang. The rman utility
is not invoked nor there is any error message displayed at the prompt.

Solution Description
Find out which rman utility is invoked by typing ,
'which rman' at the command prompt.
Ensure that the correct utility is invoked from $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory.
Explanation
In linux, there is a OS utility called rman. This utility is used for formatting
purposes.This resides in the /usr/bin directory.
If the ORACLE_HOME is not set properly or the PATH variable contains ORACLE_HOME/bin
at the end instead of beginning, then the rman utility provided by oracle is
not invoked.Also, no error message is thrown out, since there is another utility
by the same name.
When the environment variables are properly set, then the correct utility is
invoked from the $ORACLE_HOME/bin

Oracle 10g installation problem on RHEL4

hi,
I am installing oracle 10g on red hat linux. I read the complete documentation and the mailing lists and have installed all the required RPMs.
When I start install, I get the following three errors:
error in invoking target 'install' of makefile
'u/01/app/oracle/ctx/lib/ins_ctx.mk'.
error in invoking target 'agent nmo nmb' of makefile
'u/01/app/oracle/ctx/lib/ins_sysman.mk'.
error in invoking target 'all_no_orcl' of makefile
'u/01/app/oracle/ctx/lib/ins_rdbms.mk'.
This error is popped up when the link part is going on. I am installing the standard edition and have done all the possible things mentioned in the documentation.
Can someone pls help me understand where is the problem

i had the same sequence of errors on installing (10g on Redhat AS4)
The first error (INFO: /usr/bin/ld: crt1.o: No such file: No such file or directory
) is solved by installing the following package (you need the glibc-devel i386 package installed as well as the x86_64 version)
up2date --arch=i386 glibc-devel
The second error, I am currently stuck at (error in invoking target agent nmo nmb...of makefile ins_sysman.mk)

Optimization advice requested - 10g Java / ncomp

Hi.
I am a Linux System Administrator who has been assigned the task of maximizing the performance of my company's Oracle datamining.
I have little experience in SQL, little experience in Java coding, and most of my Oracle experience is from 1998. But apparently I am the most qualified person in the company for this, so I'll give it my best shot.
Previously, the company had analysts running the datamining queries on their own desktops. This would effectively monopolize their PC's for several hours while the queries ran. The company now intends to have the analysts send 'analysis packages' to a batch server which would process the queries and pass the results back when each query is finished. Currently they have assigned a Windows XP PC with a q6600 CPU and 4GB of RAM as the batch server. Eventually they plan to buy a new server for this, which should run Redhat AS4 x86_64. I have also been asked to provide a hardware spec for this new server.
The size of the oradata directory is not large, only 7GB. The queries use a lot of embedded Java on tables with a million rows, and sometimes the Java will make it's own SQL queries. After a bit of web searching, I thought that NCOMP'ing all the JAVA would surely give a large performance boost. Oddly, the main Oracle developer in our company had never heard of NCOMP.
So I downloaded the companion CD, and I downloaded the Visual Studio 2008 Trial .iso, and I installed them on our 'batch server'
There was a glitch when I ran the NCOMP example/demo:

Anyway I tried running ncomp on our main .jar , SMOracleFuncs.jar 200K(compressed), which has 50 classes in it.
It deployed a jar SMOracleFuncs_depl.jar which included:

Much of the time during the 80 minute execution, the CPU utilization is only 25%. Since this is on a quad-core CPU, I thought perhaps it was running only in a single thread, but when I look at the taskmgr, I see all the cores getting used, but not well.
Why would this happen? What am I doing wrong?
Perhaps there are compilation options that I need to use to get full multithreaded support.

Also, I'm trying to come up with a good hardware spec for the Linux 64bit batch server.
I'm thinking of a Core i7 965 CPU with 12GB of RAM. The database is small enough to run in a tempfs, for ramdisk speeds.
Frequent backups should be enough, because we don't require 24x7 uptime.
Does anyone know if 1600MHz DDR3 would be worthwhile instead of 1066Mhz ?
Any point in storing the Oracle application on a SSD?

Getting slapd to dump core when installed as a non-root users on linux

Doesn anyone know how to allow slapd do dump core when running on linux(redhat as4) while being installed as a non-root user?
I have tried the normal route of setting core to unlimited and that user to unlimited also in limits.conf.
I can do a kill -11 $pid with an instance running as root to get a core but no luck with an instance as a non-root user.

I forgot to mention that I'm running 6.1.

DB2 transaction log full

I am installing ECC6 for DB2 on RedHat AS4 platform. During import ABAP phase(running3, waiting1, completed15, total19), I have a strange error. System tell me that DB2 transaction log full. It seems unreasonable. System should know data volume during data import. I increased DB2 log file size when I got the error, and now, import ABAP is still in progress. Does anybody know why I got this error? Thanks so much.

In newer installations you started in "Default Mode" you need to review your summary dialog and mark the corresponding dialog for respecification.

OLE2 from Forms 10g to Microsoft Word 2007 Mail Merge

We have an Oracle Form that allows the user to print off information on the Form to a Microsoft Word document via OLE2 and mail merging; Forms version is 10.1.2.0.2 as it the version of OAS (from Linux Redhat AS4). Some questions:
Which version of office were you using before? 2003?
Are the data files on a network, or on your local machine? If they are on a network, can you make a copy of one of them on your local machine and try again?
Can you open the files directly in Excel? What extension do they have (.xls, or something else?) I am wondering whether access to other file types has been left blocked on your machine but is allowed on your colleague's machine.
Are you just opening the mail merge main document and seeing this message? If so, do you see the same thing if you start with a new document and try to connect to one of these data sources?
Can you confirm that the message is about Access even though you are trying to connect to an Excel file?
(Also, office 2007 has some new stuff - that let's you specify that certain folders are "trusted" . I don't think that ever affected MailMerge but it may be as well to make sure that your documents and data sources are in trusted locations).
Also worth trying to start Word in "Safe mode" - see, e.g. http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/word-help/work-with-office-safe-modes-HP010140792.aspx

Help on issue "Fail to publish presence"

Hi,
The situation is this:
One OCMS is installed on Server A (Redhat AS4.0), the presence function is OK after I change some attributes of Presence MBean from com.hotsip.* to oracle.*. Then, the server failed for some unknown reason. As a result, it's not able to publish presence.
And then, I tried re-installing OCMS on this server. The presence function is OK after the installation even without any configuration.
Then, on Server B, I install a new instance of OCMS. But it's not able to publish presence no matter the Presence Mbean is configured or not.
So, any idea on my issue?

Hi Sino,
Can you post a snippet of your log files (system.log and traffic.log) on OCMS Server B when you are trying to publish presence from your client?
Some additional things to check for:
Are you using Oracle Communicator to publish presence?
If so, are the XDMS settings correctly pointing to your OCMS instance?
Check the presence Mbeans to make sure all the IP addresses are correctly set, particularly for XCAP Server

Help in running EM after reboot.

I had a successfully installed Oracle 10G 64 in a Redhat AS4 64 machine...Everything is running, except when I reboot the server, i could run emctl. I also had problems in starting the database...Do you think the problems that I encounered is to have the patch installed? because i havent installed the patch yet coz I cannot register in the metalink.

after installation, I reboot the machine. I logged in as root then use the terminal to change user to oracle. I ran the .bash_proile. i started lsnrctl, then I went to sqlplus. I logged in as sys. I startup the database..An error occured..it wont mount the database..I tried to run emctl, but failed..
