RMAN: Using older backupset but all archivelogs

I was reading on asktom.com about his method of backing up a database:
Take full hot backups via RMAN Mon-Wed-Friday, but backup the archive logs nightly.
One of the benefits was that if pre-Wed backup a block becomes corrupt and backed up, and you don't notice it until Thursday, then you could use the Monday night full backup and all the the archive logs to roll the database forward to current. Hopefully, the block wouldn't be written in a corrupt manner the second time around.
So, how do you instruct RMAN to use a backup older than the most current, but to use all archive logs thru current?
Thanks,
Chuck

And something else related that I haven't found the answer for:
If you are using the control file to store RMAN's restore/recovery information, and you run the command
RMAN> BACKUP DATABASE FULL KEEP FOREVER NOLOGS;
What happens to this status if the situation arises where you lose your control file and have to resync RMAN with a new control file? Is the KEEP FOREVER status attached to the backupset, and RMAN registers this when the resync occurs?
Thanks,
Chuck

Saw this solution on another post about an iPad in a school enviroment. Might work on your iPad so you won't lose everything.

‘iPad is disabled’ fix without resetting using iTunes
Today I met my match with an iPad that had a passcode entered too many times, resulting in it displaying the message ‘iPad is disabled – Connect to iTunes’. This was a student iPad and since they use Notability for most of their work there was a chance that her files were not all backed up to the cloud. I really wanted to just re-activate the iPad instead of totally resetting it back to our default image.
I reached out to my PLN on Twitter and had some help from a few people through retweets and a couple of clarification tweets. I love that so many are willing to help out so quickly. Through this I also learned that I look like Lt. Riker from Star Trek (thanks @FillineMachine).
Through some trial and error (and a little sheer luck), I was able to reactivate the iPad without loosing any data. Note, this will only work on the computer it last synced with. Here’s how:
    1. Configurator is useless in reactivating a locked iPad. You will only be able to completely reformat the iPad using Configurator. If that’s ok with you, go for it – otherwise don’t waste your time trying to figure it out.
    2. Open iTunes with the iPad disconnected.
    3. Connect the iPad to the computer and wait for it to show up in the devices section in iTunes.
    4. Click on the iPad name when it appears and you will be given the option to restore a backup or setup as a new iPad (since it is locked).
    5. Click ‘Setup as new iPad’ and then click restore.
    6. The iPad will start backing up before it does the full restore and sync. CANCEL THE BACKUP IMMEDIATELY. You do this by clicking the small x in the status window in iTunes.
    7. When the backup cancels, it immediately starts syncing – cancel this as well using the same small x in the iTunes status window.
    8. The first stage in the restore process unlocks the iPad, you are basically just cancelling out the restore process as soon as it reactivates the iPad.
If done correctly, you will experience no data loss and the result will be a reactivated iPad. I have now tried this with about 5 iPads that were locked identically by students and each time it worked like a charm.

Try it and good luck. You have nothing more to lose if it doesn't work for you.

  • I want to backup my ipod's music on windows without using software. But all I see is DCIM, and I have shown all hidden folders.

I really would like to backup my ipod onto my computer, but when I go to my Ipod and it's internal storgae, all I see is a file called DCIM
I can not download software, PLEASE tell me there is a way to get my songs onto the computer still

For iTunes purchases you need iTunes
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer
For other music you  need a third-party program like one of those discusses here:
Recovering your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device: Apple Support Communities
As you found out, you can't do it via native windows

  • Can RMAN use foreign backupset?

Hello, i'm new with rman and i don't know if there is a possibility to do something like that:
i want to recover some tables i saved in a compressed backup set from another database.
Is RMAN able to open a backup file coming from a database that is not the database target?
    Thanks for your help

No, RMAN isn't able to do that.
This would require ordinary export, or using the transportable_tablespace feature of export.

  • Thinking about upgrading to Mountain Lion. Family members use different devices, but all on one apple account.

Will we be able to view our individual facebook accounts on our individual devices, all have our individual games with Mountain Lion or will it automatically synchronise to the same thing? If so, what do we need to do to separate our devices? Would we have to purchase separate Mountain Lions for each device if we did separate them?

  • I could use \Firefox ok but all of a sudden i can no longer use it. I get a message saying there is a problem connecting and although i am connected to the internet and can use other browsers, i cannot use firefox. It is allowed through my firewall.

i think i may have caused this wheni inadvertently pressed upgrade when i had an internet explorer message appear.

A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox or the plugin-container process without informing you, possibly after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox and the plugin-container process and the updater process.

  • I used migration assistent but all Iwork apps give an error

Because my Macbook died, I transferred everything from there over to my IMac. Both macs had well functioning pages, numbers etc apps before, but after migration, none of them works anymore. The dialogue window says: Pages can't open because of a problem. You may need to reinstall the application.
Now I do still have the installation CD, but this is being thrown out right after I gave it in.
    What to do?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
iWork apps require some additional files that looks like they aren't on your hard drive, and that's why you are getting an error. Unfortunately, the only solution is to reinstall iWork from the DVD.
Also, you can try to install the latest iWork version from  > Software Update

  • HT4759 I have a iPhone and iPad can't use my iPad as it says not enough storage and that the iPad can't be backed up and I can't get use my iPad but all messages and notifications r showing but can't get into them what should I do?

If your device is frozen and unresponsive, reset it by holding the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release.

  • My mac become so slow i can't use any app. All the time there is sound of hard drive but no swapping is reported by system monitor.

    Hi Folks,
recently my Mac after latest upgrade of Maverics 10.9.2 degraded performance dramatically to the point that when I switch from one app to another i should wait 30-40 seconds to get the response back from the System. The Hard drive is in use each time I click a mouse button. Sounds like an excessive hard drive usage usually caused by swapping. But System monitor shows Free memory ) Swapping and plenty of Idle CPU.
I tried to find the Process that might over uses the disk but all appear to be Ok. i couldn't spot any process that would over use the IO.
IO looks normal from System Monitor.
I checked the Apple Support whenever it is a defected hard disk issue but according to serial this Mac is not under disk replacement program.
Any tips on what should I do to find the root cause?

  • Using older servos with new controller

My group has a three-axis stage controlled by an old Galil DMC-230
motion control board, Galil ESA-10-75 amplifilers and three dc servo
motors (from Galil too, I think).  The board is mounted in an
ancient computer running DOS.  To make matters worse, the hard
drive seems about to give out.  We would like to leave the stage
and motors alone but replace the controller and amplifiers.  We
are considering using an NI PCI-7344 controller with an NI MID-7604
    Motor Drive.
    My questions are:
What are the main things to consider when matching a servo motor to a controller?
Has anyone done anything similar (using older servos, but replacing controller and drive)?
Should I just give up and beg the boss to buy new motors as well?
    Thanks for any advice!
    Telemaque

Been there and almost done that. We have a legacy DOS Galil based (DMC-630 controllers with SSA-12/40 drives) system with brushed servos that is on it's last legs.
Matching servo to drive amps- look at max currents, voltages, and inductances on the motors to see if drive can accomodate. Are they brushed or brushless motors. Also check if encoders and hall signals from existing motors and limits from stages compatible with new controller.
Personally, I would suggest new motors since you may not know their history of (ab)use and depending on their ratings, may be a minor percentage of total retrofit cost. You may also want to have the stages sent out for refurbishment if time permits. They have probably seen a lot of use with little or no cleaning and lubrication. Mechanical wear also takes it's toll. On the system I mentioned above, we were experiencing loss of accuracy and repeatability- the lead screws and nuts were trashed.
Just a couple ideas to start with.
    Good Luck

Your MacBook is compatible with Mac OS X 10.6.8, which is the minimum required to install the current version of iTunes and sync devices running iOS 7. It doesn't need to be compatible with Lion, Mountain Lion, or Mavericks.

  • Can I use rman 64 bit backupsets to restore/recover on a 32bit platform?

    Hi,
rman is creating daily backupsets on my 64bit prod database.
In case of failure, may I use those backupsets to restore on a 32 bit database?
    Cheers,
    phil

First of all you should specify the specific DB version you are working with, since there are certain constraints you should be aware with the 64/32 interoperability. You may take a look at this thread --> Re: can i do dataguard between oracle 64 bit to oracle 32 bit? where the 64/32 bit problem is addressed with data guard. I know you are concerned about the rman issue, not data guard, but there you will find some references on the 64/32 interoperability on both, oracle documents and metalink notes.

  • All iPhone 4's in building not getting 3G data, but all older iPhones are

A few people in our office purchased new iPhone 4's over the weekend. All of us were 1st gen through 3GS iPhone users.*
Everyone who has the new iPhone can't get any data over 3G, but all 3GS or older phones are pulling data as normal. I don't think it's a signal attenuation/bumper issue as I'm getting 5 bars.
I spoke with both Apple and AT&T a few times. Apple is as confused about it as I am and AT&T suggested I return the phone and try another (obviously not the problem).
If I drive a mile down the road, 3G works fine.
We're at a bit of an impasse; we have 30 days to return the phones and we all love our old iPhones and have no interest in using anything else, but if we can't resolve the issue, I'm not sure what options we're left with. Has anyone else had this problem?
*these are all personal accounts, not business, so you can rule out an account issue

    Bryann wrote:
This issue is tied, from my experience, to the base band change in iOs4 of how the iP4 is connecting to the least congested tower vs. the stronger signal tower. If you think about it towers aren't that close together so if the closest tower is overloaded and the iP4 is connecting a tower that is not as congested but is two, or farther, miles away you may still technically have 3G service but your not going to be able to connect data wise. This is a major issue and hope I Apple finds a compromise between the old method and the new of how the iP4 connects to towers.
interesting. if you don't mind me asking, you said "from my experience"....you've seen this problem before?
was this change in 4.0 or 4.0.1 (which looks like it could be the culprit)?
