RMI and SOAP

hai everybody,
I wanna know the differences in using RMI and SOAP concepts.
can we use SOAP in place of RMI?
Im new to SOAP.
I want use SOAP concept in my project to work with the database by sending data through SOAP messages using xml to remote server.
there i want call some remote methods to insert data in to database from the SOAP messages.
Is it necessary to use RMI here or we can manage vth SOAP concepts?
can any one suggest in such situation?
Thanks in advance for ur reply

They are essentially the same. RMI is a little bit more abstract - SOAP defines one way you can do RMI. Others are things like CORBA and DCOM.RMI and SOAP are not the same at all. RMI is java's remote procedure call (RPC) mechanism and is java to java only. SOAP is used for exchanging XML-based messages and is cross-platform.

  • RFC and SOAP

    Hello,
    I am writing on my master thesis about integration of ariba -> SAP R/3
    I found a lot of information about the middleware SAP Netweaver PI to connect both systems.
    I always find the words SOAP and RPC Call/Request. I searched a lot in google but don't understand the difference between both.
    The only thing that I can find is that SAP R/3 comunicates with SAP Netweaver PI via RPC Call/Requests and SAP Netweaver PI comunicates with Ariba via SOAP.
    But why? What is the difference? Could someone explain the difference? Please use simple explanation because I am not an IT-expert.
    Thanks a lot!!
    Best regards!

    Hi Stefan,
    1) There are a couple of modes to speak with SAP and PI possibly at play. With traditional SAP servers they use IDOC communications which travels over the RFC channels. This model of connection goes back a long way regardless of Ariba. With newer products like SRM (shopping cart program from SAP) they use proxy which are HTTP communication (SOAP layer maybe not necessary). Ariba doesn't care much about how SAP communicates with PI.
    2)  RFC terminology gets used a lot, sometimes with different implied meanings (protocol vs port vs programing API)
    3) Ariba's systems are not (presumably) based on SAP. They are open web interfaces to integrate with SAP or whatever platform a trading partner wishes to use (cXML standard). For PI, Ariba has developed their own custom implementation of a SOAP adapter. We've used it for several years now and they keep improving it with each revision. We hope it gets even better now that SAP acquired them.
    SOAP and RFC are widely used words in SAP. Any way from Classical SAP Technology perspective, you can look at below link..
    SAP Library - Components of SAP Communication Technology
    SOAP allows any XML elements to be sent through, XML-RPC is limited to a predefined number of parameters and is limited in what types they can be.
    Have a look at below ans from Rich Freedman, detailed very well in short.
    What are the differences between RPC, RMI and SOAP?
    For SOAP, on SCN itself you will find many more blogs on SOAP.
    Good luck on your thesis, and please remember to reward the people here who took time to help you along the way!
    Thanks,
    Seshu.

  • What is the difference between RMI and JAX-RPC?

    Dear All
    First of all my understanding of RMI and JAX-RPC:
    RMI is JAVA only version of RPC. It can't talk to any other language.
    JAX-RPC is a part of JWSDP and if you implement your client and server with JAX-RPC, client written in any language can talk with JAX-RPC implementation.
    What else makes them different and am I right with my understanding?
    Finally, I would like to develop clients which will have a java class, say httpserver.java, which will act like a http server, listens to a http port. Now, Two such client will run in two different PC and I want to call a module from one client to another which should be accessible via my httpserver.java. For that which should be my choice RMI or JAX-RPC? Can I achive it with http get-post method, as I am expecting to read some value of variables from one client to the another.
    Say class A has variable a, aa, aaa and clas B has variable b, bb, bbb. Now I want to read the value of b, bb, bbb from class A. How do I do that when class B is listening to a http port with my httpserver.java class.
    Lastly, say B is listening to a http port and I want to send a file to B from A. How can I do that? Remember, B didnt ask for that. How can A send a file to B when B is listening to a http port with my httpserver.java.

    simply put, RMI allows you to (semi) transparently treat remote objects as if they were local, and your distributed application can be written (more or less) like a "normal" java app. Sockets just give you a "raw" connection to work with, and you get to build up your application from that.
    I hope that helped

  • Please help: RMI and Swing/AWT issue

    Hi guys, I've been having a lot of trouble trying to get a GUI application to work with RMI. I'd appreciate any help. Here's the story:
    I wrote a Java application and its GUI using Netbeans. In a nutshell, the application is about performing searches. I am now at the point where I need exterior programs to use my application's search capabilities, thus needing RMI. Such exterior programs are to call methods currently implemented in my application.
    I implemented RMI, and got the client --> server communication working. However, the GUI just breaks. It starts outputting exceptions, gets delayed, doesn't update properly, some parts of it stop working.... basically hysterical behavior.
    Now take a look at this line within my server class:
    Naming.rebind("SearchProgram", mySearchProgram);
    If I take it out, RMI obviously does not work... but the application and its GUI work flawlessly. If I put it in, the RMI calls work, but the GUI's above symptoms occur again. Among the symptoms are null pointer exceptions which all look similar, are related to "AWT-EventQueue-0", and keep ocurring. Here's just snippet of the errors outputted:

    Maybe you want to change that worker thread to
    not do RMI but anything else (dummy data) to see if it really is RMI, I doubt it, I think you are updating some structures that have to do with swing GUI and hence you will hang.
    Just check this out.

  • Xmlrpc and soap, looking for a simple answer to a simple question

    Hello,
    Can someone tell me, are java implementations of web service protocols such as soap and xmlrpc built around servlets (and supporting classes of course) that know how to deal with these specific xml formats? I know there are various libraries for handling these things but on the most basic level it's still using a Servlet as an end point for an http request and then handing out the request to the supporting classes isn't it?
    thanks a bunch
    -seth

    XML-RPC and SOAP were developed outside of Sun, outside of Java. They are uniform international standards of communications developed on top of XML standards to be easily used by applications of different types.
    XML, like Java, is cross-platform, but for applications. XML defines document structure, and because it is an international standard, many people have access to the "format." An application, like Microsoft Word, can read an XML document created by some other Application that is written in XML because both understand XML. Although they can read the document, they may not understand the data. Various other XML technologies enable the application to retrieve another XML document that describes the elements or that defines how the data is to be displayed and/or used. XML Style Sheets and XML Translations are just two such things.
    Not everyone knows the Adobe PDF format, so a program like MS Word is not able to read it, but if it was written in XML, then Word could read the document, get the technology that describes how to handle the data, and then properly display it to the user, allow editing, then save it back into XML format, and then Acrobat could read the edited data and display it correctly as well. Two different applications, one common format.

  • Connection to CRX via RMI and getting WeakReference value..... with an exception!

    Hi there,
    I have the following problem.
    I opened a ticket in Day Care Support system, about CRX users/group membership that got lost while synchronization with our LDAP server.
    Although when the user and the group had been created (and therefore taken from that same LDAP server), the membership was good.... but after some time the membership got lost......
    So what i am trying to do now is a Java program that connects to CRX via RMI.
    And gets the list of all the users from a group (aka membership).
    The idea is to monitor the membership each seconds.
    But when trying to get the property "rep:members" of the group, I have the following exception :

    I searched a little bit and found that "10" is the number for type WeakReference.
    That's normal to me because memberships are stored in the group as a list reference to users linked to that group....
    Anyways, what's not normal to me is that when the type is "10" the API does not let me get the Value (cf. ServerProperty.getValues() method)

  • Java and SOAP

    I am trying to use Java and SOAP to call a Coldfusion CFC file. The problem is that I can not figure out how to call the coldfusion function by using a url to direct the SOAP request, within java. The cfc file does sql queries on a separate network so I need to send a string parameter to the function and be able to return one back to the java program.
    I have done a lot of internet research and I can not get it to work out right. My coldfusion is working correctly.

    But the Coldfusion server would still have to present a "service". This could be using web services or it could be something as simple as a small HTTP based page to take the parameters and pass back results. Somehow the Coldfusion server must present a service for this to work.
    Think of a standard HTML page with a form on it. What you're describing is similar to that - you take in parameters (the HTML form) and return results (the result from an HTTP POST). Coldfusion is acting as the web server and your Java client is acting as the browser. Until the Coldfusion server is ready to accept requests (in your case SOAP formatted requests) there is not point worrying about the client side (the Java client in your case).
    Is the Coldfusion server presenting something that can run the CFC file and return the results? Again, it could be a web service or even a REST-like service (like I described above) that your client could talk to.

  • File to SOAP and SOAP to File (Synchronous)

    Hi,
    Can anybody advice me how to do the File to SOAP and SOAP to File with Synchronous call.
    Thanks,
    Naidu.

    Hi,
    Use this blog
    RFC -> XI -> WebService - A Complete Walkthrough (Part 1)
    and create an inbound synchronous interface for soap receiver structure. provide request and response structure in it.
    Thanks!

  • RMI and Swing Events

    Hi,
    I have a problem, integrating an application with RMI and a Client side with swing.
    I have un RMI object that does something, and in any time I want to inform to the client side rmi... I did something like:
    // This is the REmote implementation
    public MyRemoteImpl extends Activatable implements MyRemote{
      EventListenerList listeners;
    // code for activation, etc.......
      public void addListener(MyListener l){
        // add the listener in the list...
      public void fireEvent(String msgEvent){
        // in each listener that is MyListener, .doEvent(String msg)
      // Methods that calls fireEvent...
    // Mylistener interface..
    public MyListener implements EventListener{
      public void doEvent(String msg);
    // The swing client side.
    public MyClient extends JPanel implements MyListener{
      MyRemote rem=null;
      // In the start of ui.. Ido:
      rem.addListener(this);
      public void doEvent(String msg){
        // Puts the message at one component....
    }The problem is that when the doEvent of the Swing side is called, it is executing in the rmid... And the UI is not updated...
    What I do wrong??
    Thanks and Best Regards.

    I wrote an application that does something similar, it receives some event and modifies a JTree accordingly. You should try using the java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(Runnable) method. Something like this:
    public void doEvent(String msg) {
        // Determine what changes need to be made
        java.awt.EventQueue.invokeLater(new Runnable() {
            public void run() {
                // Only the GUI component modification calls need to go here
    }

  • Need to get SOAP request and SOAP response message.

    Hi All,
    I need to know that how can I get the SOAP request and SOAP response message. Now I am using WSDL2Java tool from Axis to generate the stub classes (such as ServiceLocator, SoapBindingStub, and soapPort ) and applying the classes to make the SOAP request. I have seen the solution for getting the SOAP request with Dynamic invocation interface (DII) style (http://mail-archives.apache.org/mod_mbox/ws-soap-user/200310.mbox/%[email protected]%3e), but not Static stub like what I did. Could anyone suggest me how to do it please ( I can't run tcpcom on the linux server, because x-window is not allowed to install ). Thank you for any help in advance.

    You can try writing a client-side handler.
    Handler gets called before the actual request is sent, and you can get the SOAP
    message in it.
    You have to deploy the handler in client-config.wsdd.
    Handler is just like Servlet Filter.
    I think there might be a simpler solution, but I dont know.

  • RFC sender and SOAP receiver data is not posting

    Dear Experts,
    we creating one scenario
    R3-PI-Third party(WSDL).so we are creating  RFC as Sender and SOAP as Receiver.in SXMB_MONI no error.Message monitoring also showing delivered and both payloads also showing.but in thirdparty system data is not posting.third party system is handling messages, but not showing any error also.we call the WSDL using WSNAVIGATOR to post data working fine.

  • Web-services.xml for EJB component and SOAP Message Handler Chain

    I have used the following example for my own web service with EJB component and SOAP

    I have a deployment error:

    In attachement is the ear file.
    Is there a problem in web-services.xml?
    Thanks

    It works. Thanks,

    The error means your EJB is not deployed.
    Adding a EJB module to your application.xml file of the ear should fixe
    it.

  • Jax-rpc and soap

    I have implemented a web service using jax-rpc and soap however i am unsure how to go about validating my soap package with my own schema before using the web service. How do i use my own schema to validate this, i think it may be with the wsdl file but i am not sure. At present the wsdl file points to a non existing .xsd file which the soap envelope uses, what i need i to replace this with my own schema, or is there a better way to do this than using jax-rpc and soap?
    cheers

    I am in the same situation as you are. Got any solution? please let me know.

  • Java Web Service Access SOP Header and SOAP Body

    Hi
    I am newbie to Web Service. I had a Java class and I converted it to Web Service(LoginWebService has methods login, register).
    Now my client is accessing my web services and calling methods login and register.
    Now I want to add few values in SOAP header in client side.
    My Questions:
    1. How can I access the SOAP headers and SOAP Body in my Server Web Service method implementations?
    2. Is there any API that I have to use?
    3. Does anyone have any sample code for these things?
    Thanks

    Seems like the exception handling logic is not sound - but your posting is difficult to read. Please use the *\* tag to mark and end source code snippets.
    Have a look at the sample code in {message:id=4205205} - does a SOAP call using PL/SQL only.
