RMI-Codebase Stuff... (woreks only on Windows machine)

habe mein Programm auf meiner Windowskiste laufen und was soll ich sagen :) es l�uft.
Ich kann Objekte f�r den Remotezugriff zur Verf�gung stellen, kann vom Client darauf zugreifen und wunderbar. Die Stubs habe ich dazu auf meinen Webserver gelegt und die codebase wie folgt als zus�tzliches Argument f�r den JVM angegeben:
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://meinserver.de/classes/
Lange Rede kurzer Sinn: Es l�uft einwandfrei.
Nun zum Problem:
Habe das gleiche nun auf einer LinuxKiste vesucht und dort geht es nicht.
Programm kompiliert einwandfrei, nur das "�ffentlich machen" der Objekte klappt nicht. Ich bekomme so eine seltsame UnmarshalException mit einer genesteten ClassNotFoundException. Das Ganze deutet laut stundenlangem Googeln auf eine nicht korrekte Codebase hin. Sie ist aber korrekt, benutze den gleichen String an der gleichen STelle wie auf dem Windowsrechner. Mein Webserver loggt auch keinerlei aktivit�t mit. Der Linuxrechner versucht also gar nicht an die stubs auf dem Server zu kommen.
Woran kanns liegen? Muss man bei Linux mehr beachten als bei Windows?

i wrote a litle program. It works fine on my windows machine (XP, sun-jdk-1.5.0, Netbeans 4.0) I can create objects, and bind them to rmi-registry. (I am using the embedded rmiregistry from OpenJMS.) A client can lookup them using the naming.lookup(�blabla�) method. Therefor I put the stub-files on my webserver. The codebase is placed on this server.
-Djava.rmi.server.codebase=http://myserver.de/classes/
Everything works fine!
THE PROBLEM:
When I start the same program on my linux machine (Gentoo, sun-jdk-1.5.0, netbeans 3.6) I get an UnmarshalEception with a nested ClassNotFoundException. I am using the same codebase as on the windows machine. I recognized, that there is no access to the stub-files on my web server when I start it. (The logs do not change) I do also use the same version of embedded rmi-registry (in OpenJMS). Everything is the same, but the operating system.
What can cause this problem? I imagine that java is not allowed to contact the webserver, but there is no firewall, nothing that could forbid it, but java itselfs.
I tried to use a policyfile. So I created a file called: rmi.policy with this content:
grant
permission java.security.AllPermission;
I addet this policy to the vm as argument with thi command:
-Djava.security.policy=http://myserver.de/rmi.policy
when I now start the program I can see in the web server logs, that there is access to the rmi.policy file. That means, the VM is fetching it an (maybe) read it! But there is still the UnmarshalException an no access to the stub-files on the webserver.
It would be very helpful if somebody could help me.

I have been to the local Genius bar and through trial and error we have determined that Mail is working ok but somehow the account is causing the problem. I have used this account for years. Any ideas what is causing this?

No idea why, but one thing you may try if you have the time, is create a new user, and set up the problem mail account in the new user space. See if it causes your MBP to hang as well. That will tell you if it is something wrong with your main User, or something wrong with MBP.
Assuming this works, I'd nuke the problem account in your main user space, re-start, and reinititate the account and see if that helps.
Depening on how many email accounts you have setup, it may be necessary to nuke the whole Mail folder in your User/Library.... Hard way to get it to work, but just my idea.

Want to use only DAC client on Windows machine

I want to use only DAC client from my windows machine. I have all other components on UNIX machine. Now my question is,
1.
Do we need to install all OBIEE components & then Oracle BI Apps on windows machine to use DAC client? Or just copying DAC folder from some different windows machine onto my machine will be fine to use DAC client?
2. If it is must to install OBIEE for installaing Oracle BI Apps(As DAC is part of BI Apps), What are the minimum components of OBIEE that i need to install?

The supported way to do this is to install everything on Windows. However as you have see by installing the software on UNIX the file copy approach works. You can try it just make sure you have the proper path of folders. Since you will not actually have BI EE installed you still have to create an "OracleBI" folder because some DAC files look to that folder hierarchy. Also make sure you have the Java in path with no spaces.
Let us know how it works out.

AEBS drops connection only on windows based machines (SHOCK!)n

Hi all
I've got the first gen aiport extrme draftn. No hiccups with my iphone but or mbpro but I've got two windows machines - one runs xp, the other vista. Both continually drop the connection. The router's got atv my cable modem and a few other peripherals wired into it - no issues there.
The PC machines connections drop several times a day and the only way to get things going is to reboot and sometimes reset the router.
Am I using the wrong receivers on the pcs? I've got a linksys usb draft n on one and its just terrible. Do they make receivers for pcs that are more compatible with the aebs (yes id rather trash them and switch to imacs but not practical now.).
Should I give up and hardwire or use a diff network for the pcs? I've got know clue what to do.

I'm fairly similar in some regards, but it sounds like a lot of your issues stem from Time Machine usage, which I don't use my Drobo for, so I unfortunately can't give any feedback on that particular usage-issue.
I do, however, have the Drobo attached directly to the AEBS via USB.
More often than not, it seems like the drobo goes to sleep -- no lights on. I have it in a [well-ventilated] area where I can't always see the lights, but when I open it up when it's "not working", all lights tend to be off -- much like you describe.
Also, the Drobo the ceases to show up under Airdisk (90% of the time).
The way I typically get the Drobo back on is to plug it in to the Macbook directly, and then eject it. Sometimes replugging into the AEBS will work as well.
The worst part is that, on two occassions so far I've lost data -- one time 16GB worth. Nothing mission-critical thus far...but it has me so worried that I dont' even want to plug it into the AEBS to diagnose, as it's bound to happen sooner or later.
Anyone out there have any ideas for us two poor souls? :]

How to hook up a G3 iBook to a home network with only Windows machines?

Before I attach an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) to a home network with only Windows machines, what should I know? (I intend to connect the iBook to an Ethernet socket on my Westell modem+router.) My reason for doing this is to back up a million family photos in the iBook's iPhoto Library.

It's very easy to write to the disc once you've set up the network.
On the mac locate the iPhoto library (normally open finder and click on pictures).
Open another finder window and locate the windows PC on your network, then mount the folder to which you will back up the iPhoto library.
Drag the iPhoto library to this folder.
Wait.
Wait some more.
When the copy is complete check the images can be accessed from the PC.
Unmount the folder from the mac by dragging it to the trash.
Congratulations.
Beware though, if you're like me you'll find this apple thing adicitve!!!

I'm completely ignorant of Apple technology but pretty good for a novice with Windows PC's. To help a family member with an iBook (Mac OS 10.3.9) back up a gazillion family photos (at least 3.2GB in the iPhoto Library), we want to connect his iBook to my home network with two Windows machines (one of which is connected via UBS to an external drive for backup). But before I just connect his iBook to an Ethernet port on my Westell modem+router, what should I know?
I need to know all the basics and all the steps, in as detailed a manner as you can stand to tell me.
And when it all looks good, what are the steps to copy the iPhoto Library to a designated spot on one of the Windows machines (or that external hard drive)?

Mac Pro Vs Monster Windows machine: HELP Extremely knowledgeable only!

I really need opinions from the very in-the-know.
I switched from Windows a year ago and would rather eat dirty diapers than switch back. But I had built a pretty fast machine for my lady. I bought us 2 iMac 24" 3.06 machines with 4 gigs of ram. They were supposed to replace our Microsoft pieces of crap.
Now I know, and I explained to her, that they would never be as fast as her Quad Core Windows Machine. I thought the reliability, interface, and small desktop footprint would win her over.
Not.
I have screwed around with the Mac pro's at MacMall and the Apple store. I still do not see for example, Word or Photoshop open as snappy and fast as the Windows machine. NO ONE can explain this to me. I simply do not get it. I have seen bench tests against the two in similar builds and the Mac always wins. What is the deal? I went to Macmall's premium, grand poo bah MacPro; CS4 and Word definitely do not open as fast as her Xp Pro at home. I am baffled.
I do not relish blowing another $4,000 on a Pro machine, to get it home and have her comparing the two side by side and seeing that the Windows machine is faster. At the time, I spent $3,500 just in parts to build her the Windows machine.
It has three Raptor 10,000rpm drives, at the time, a $600 512gb video card, 4 gigs of Partiot PC2-8500 memory, and a Quad core Q6600 2.4 Intel, in a 2 board (running off 1) Thermaltake case with 12 fans.
Can someone tell me the reality here? I have a theory that Macs are made to look smooth when opening apps, and so sacrifice speed. Please don't preach about reliability... that it "doesn't matter" if word opens .00003 seconds faster on a Windows machine, etc. because Mas are superior. I am the converted, and she doesn't care. Her ***** is that side by side, Explorer, Word, Excel, etc opens lightening fast, blink of the eye. That's what ticks her bubble. If I can get a Mac to do that, I'll have won the fight.

First off, $3500 for a self built PC is nuts, imo. Seriously, that's one expensive pc rig.
Second, are the 3 raptors in a raid 0? A 10,000 rpm drive alone will give a better snap to things than the stock imac hard drive.
Also XP is a very light OS (nowadays) when you compare it to the hardware, especially with a q6600 and maxing out the 3 gig ram for XP. With a decent setup, XP screams, especially with office apps.
There are probably a lot of different factors, that is affecting the performance that you want to see. However, to keep it short, if you want to girlfriend to be content just throw in a SSD and be done with it.

If SSDs are too expensive, then just partition the stock drive. And consolidate your apps on the faster partition. Fresh install Leopard; and run disk warrior regularly. Tips learned from hatter, they work

How do I share Mac's folders with a Windows machine?

I have a Mac running OS 10.8.3 and a Windows machine running Windows 8.
I create an account that is sharing only, enable File sharing, add a shared folder, give everyone read and write access, enable SMB, select that user, and enter the password.
On the Windows machine, when I log in as an administrator, I see a list of all the volumes and all the shares, and everything works as expected. When I login as the user I just created above, I see a folder with the name of the user with nothing in it; the shared folders and volumes don't appear. Guest isn't even an option.
How do I setup file sharing of multiple shares for users other than administrators?

I have been authoring my own website for years and I used Netscape Communicator and up loaded it with Fetch and I just kind a got into iWeb a little bit deeper than I had before a I like it except I can't get a movie to show on a Windows machine (at least my daughters) to save myself. I make the movies with Keynote and QuickTime and make a movie .MOV out of them. When I look at them on my Mac they are great but any Windows machine and it shows a little puzzle picture and says it won't show it. So my question is what percentage of people's computers can't look at my movies. I am a guitar teacher of 45 years and I'm trying to archive my findings over the years and movies are an absolute must slideshows and that sort of sound moving pictures documents PDFs all that I bought your iWeb for musicians thing and I've read a bunch of other some stuff I understand but others I just have no idea what you're talking about you say I'm supposed to have a media player folder in my root folder and there is no such thing. There is a folder called media and it does have my movies .MOV in it. How can I make a Windows machine show it? Everything you sent me and told me just confuses me more.

DSL slower on my Mac than my Windows machine

Okay, so here's the problem.
I have a Dual Core 2.0Ghz PowerMac G5 with 6.5Gb of RAM and an old Windows box that's on its last leg with only 128mb of RAM. I'm using Firefox 2.0 on both and I have the FasterFox extension installed on the Mac, it is set to the "optimized" setting.
I have 1Mb/sec download DSL connection through Verizon. Both computers are hooked up to the DSL modem via a D-Link DI-604 router. My Windows machine seems to have a much more stable and fast connection while my Mac tends to loose the connection more frequently and is generally slower, much slower.
My Ethernet is configured at a speed of 100baseTX, full-duplex at the standard 1500 MTU size.
Any clues?

Just unplug the cable from the port it is in and plug it into another one.
"My Ethernet is configured at a speed of 100baseTX, full-duplex at the standard 1500 MTU size." From that statement I made the leap of faith that you were familiar with how to set things up.
Most routers have a set-up web page for configuring stuff. It would be located at the default ip address for the router. The manual for the router should explain where it is.

Oracle AS cluster on single windows machine.

would appreciate your input here. I have two OAS 10g r2 (say node1 and node2) on my windows machine. I deployed my application on node1 and added node1 to a cluster. Then i added node2 to the cluster and the OC4J instance in node1 was duplicated into the second node.
My problem is the RMI port for my application is the same on both the OC4J instances and because of this only one OC4J instance can start at a time. I tried modifying the RMI port of node2 and I got both OC4J components working but the application broke. I want to later modify node1 to act as load balancer but my question is how do I modify the ports and get both OC4J isntances and the application working properly?

Here's something I found which might answer this partly: When I redeployed using enterprise manager, the RMI server port specified in the server.xml is assigned automatically by the EM. Both the nodes have a different rmi port specified in this file. This allows both OC4J instance to start up at the sametime.
However, the RMI port in the rmi.xml correctly specifies what I assigned for my application and this is the same in the RMI.xml files for both the nodes. Because of this, some features of my application dont work. If I end up shutting down one of the nodes, all features work fine.
This makes me think that I cant get this working on windows and might have to shift to vmware/linux and continue my cluster testing. hoping this doc confirms or denies my assumption!

RMI codebase confusion

You'll have to excuse me if I am asking stupid questions, but I can't find the information I want in the documentation. I am working on an RMI client-server project with 3 jars client.jar, common.jar, server.jar. The common jar contains a Remote interface which the client looks up, and the server implements. The stub class is contained in the server jar (obviously).
Currently our method of distribution is to distribute all 3 jars to the client machines - I want to avoid this as it is unnecessary. I would therefore like to set java.rmi.codebase property in the server so that clients can download the stub classes at run-time. OK.
Our RMI app is being distributed on an internal network - suppose on the server machine (call it "ourserver.london.uk.ourco.com", the relevant Jar file would be at /usr/bin/my_app/jars/server.jar (or wherever).
The clients lookup rmi://ourserver.london.uk.ourco.com:1099/MY_EXPORTED_REMOTE. Questions:
1. Is this RMI "system" dependent on the server having an Http server?
2. If it isn't, how do I define the codebase other than "http://..."?
3. If it is (and the machine certainly does have an http server on it), how do I specify the codebase URL for the clients, given that the server is not "under" the http server (IYSWIM)?
I'd be glad of answers to these (reasonably simple) questions.

First of all, I would arrange things a bit differently. In both of the cases below, we assume a http server, it's location is unimportent, but it has to be reachable from the the client. It could be the same host as the server, or a third machine.
Option #1:
client.jar -- All client class files, including all class files of remote interfaces called by the client.
server.jar -- All server class files, including all stubs, and remote interfaces implemented and their implementations.
server_dl.jar -- Just the stubs.
The client host would contain just client.jar in the classpath.
The server host would contain server.jar and server_dl.jar in its classpath
server_dl.jar would also be placed on the http server and it's url would be the server's codebase.
Option #2:
client.jar -- All client class files, but none of the remote interfaces.
server.jar -- All server class files, but none of the stubs and no remote interfaces.
interfaces.jar -- The remote interfaces shared by client and server.
server_dl.jar -- just the stubs.
The client host would need client.jar and interfaces.jar in its classpath.
The server host would need server.jar, interfaces.jar and server_dl.jar in its classpath.
server_dl.jar would also be placed on the http server and it's url would be the server's codebase.
Now to answer your questions.
1. Is this RMI "system" dependent on the server having an Http server?If you want to have the client download the server stubs, then they have to be on an http server (I think a ftp url for the codebase may also work, but I have not tried it).
2. If it isn't, how do I define the codebase other than "http://..."?
You may be able to use a ftp url in which case the url would be "ftp://....."
3. If it is (and the machine certainly does have an http server on it), how do I > specify the codebase URL for the clients, given that the server is not "under"
the http server (IYSWIM)?The downloaded class files do not have to be on a http server that is on the same host as the RMI server. The RMI server's codebase can be any valid url (reachable from the clients) The only requirement is that the class files be reachable via the codebase. You do have to configure the client's network security so that it has permission to open connections to the codebase server.

Migrating from Windows to Mac, no loger have the Windows machine

I have a two year old iPod that's pretty loaded. I originally had it set up with a Windows computer that I ripped all my CD's to. Since that point my Windows machine needed to be rebuilt so I lost all the iTunes stuff on it. I also recently got a MacBook Pro. Now I'd like to be able to use the iPod with the MacBook, but I don't want to have to reload everything onto it. So how can I take an iPod originally formatted for Windows and retrieve all the data so that when I plug it into the MacBook I won't lose everything. I don't mind if I have to wipe out the iPod and reformat it then reload the music. I just don't want to have to rip all my CD's again. If it's any help I do have a networked Windows machine available to help with this.

Macs can read Windows formatting so you should be able to connect your iPod without any bother. You can use a keyboard command to prevent your iPod auto-syncing with iTunes. While connecting the iPod to the computer on a Mac hold down the Option and Command (⌥ and ⌘ Apple) keys. This will stop the iPod from auto-syncing with iTunes and it will appear in the source list. Wait until you are sure the iPod has mounted, and that it will not auto sync and then you can let the keys go. This may take between 20 to 30 seconds depending on your computer. Once you are connected change the update setting to manual so you can use your iPod without the risk of accidentally erasing it. Also when using a lot of the utilities your iPod needs to be enabled for disc use, changing to manual update will do this by default. Check the "manually manage music and videos" box in Summary then press the Apply button:

If you have any iTMS purchases the transfer of purchased content from the iPod to authorised computers has been introduced with iTunes 7. A paragraph on it has been added to this article: Transfer iTunes Store purchases using iPod
The transfer of non iTMS content such as songs imported from CD is designed by default to be one way from iTunes to iPod. However there's a manual method of copying songs from your iPod to your Mac. If you prefer something more automated there are a number of third party utilities that you can use to retrieve music files and playlists from your iPod, this is just a selection. I use Senuti but have a look at the web pages and documentation for the others too, you'll find that they have varying degrees of functionality and some will transfer movies, videos, photos and games as well. Keep your iPod in manual mode until you have reloaded your iTunes and you are happy with your playlists etc. then if you wish it will be safe to return it auto-sync again.

CP command to Windows machine

If I use cp to copy the bulk of my user directory to a Windows machine is there anything I need to worry about with regard to symbolic links, hard links, and the like? I don't know much at all about resource forks - but thought I read that CP under Tiger changed the way they were handled.
Also, if I did the copy from the Windows side using a tool like robocopy, are there worries there?
My user directory contains pretty standard stuff: iPhoto libraries, Final Cut projects, Word docs, music...

   Yes but does the remote filesystem handle resource forks? I would tend to doubt it. In that case, what happens depends on how you are connected to the computer, which you don't bother to tell us. However, probably each resource fork would be copied to a separate file with the same name as the original but with "._" prepended to the name.
   Softlinks that contain absolute paths would be broken and if they contain relative paths they would work only if the path is contained completely within the portion of the filesystem copied. Hardlinks would cease to be links but the data would be copied to a new file.
