AEBS drops connection only on windows based machines (SHOCK!)n

Hi all
I've got the first gen aiport extrme draftn. No hiccups with my iphone but or mbpro but I've got two windows machines - one runs xp, the other vista. Both continually drop the connection. The router's got atv my cable modem and a few other peripherals wired into it - no issues there.
The PC machines connections drop several times a day and the only way to get things going is to reboot and sometimes reset the router.
Am I using the wrong receivers on the pcs? I've got a linksys usb draft n on one and its just terrible. Do they make receivers for pcs that are more compatible with the aebs (yes id rather trash them and switch to imacs but not practical now.).
Should I give up and hardwire or use a diff network for the pcs? I've got know clue what to do.

Hi there!
Hopefully between our conversation, someone will be able to lend us a hand (if we can't figure it out on our own?)
I'm fairly similar in some regards, but it sounds like a lot of your issues stem from Time Machine usage, which I don't use my Drobo for, so I unfortunately can't give any feedback on that particular usage-issue.
I do, however, have the Drobo attached directly to the AEBS via USB.
More often than not, it seems like the drobo goes to sleep -- no lights on. I have it in a [well-ventilated] area where I can't always see the lights, but when I open it up when it's "not working", all lights tend to be off -- much like you describe.
Also, the Drobo the ceases to show up under Airdisk (90% of the time).
The way I typically get the Drobo back on is to plug it in to the Macbook directly, and then eject it. Sometimes replugging into the AEBS will work as well.
The worst part is that, on two occassions so far I've lost data -- one time 16GB worth. Nothing mission-critical thus far...but it has me so worried that I dont' even want to plug it into the AEBS to diagnose, as it's bound to happen sooner or later.
Anyone out there have any ideas for us two poor souls? :]
John

How do I connect to Time Capsule from a Windows 8.1 machine which is on a Windows domain. I have been able to connect from a Windows 7 machine on a Windows domain to a Time Capsule. Airport utility is not displaying the Time Capsule Win8.1 machine.
I have checked that the firmware has been updated to 7.6.4 . Similalrly the Win8.1 machine has been loaded with the update specified in another discussion.

Firstly how are you connecting to the TC.. wireless or ethernet?
Please open a command window and ping it.. ping by name and by IP address.
If ping succeeds at least by IP it should work.
    In windows explorer type
\\10.0.1.1 (or whatever the TC ip is.. that is the default).
Having the airport utility for windows loaded can help the process. As it loads bonjour for windows.
7.6.4 firmware on the TC is useless. It works better on 7.6.1
If the ping does not succeed by either name or IP address yet you have internet through the TC, then your network is setup wrongly. You are have firewalls blocking local IP. Take down all the firewalls.

When I open the application the following alert appears: "Could not initialize the application's security component. The most likely cause is problems with files in your application's profile directory." There is a solution on the support site but only for Windows-based Firefox, and I'm a Mac user. I have plenty of room on my hard disk.

In Mac OS X v10.7, the $HOME/Library folder is a hidden folder.
Open Finder and use one of these:
    * Go > Go To Folder (Shift-Command-G) and in the dialog type: ~/Library
    * Open the "Go" menu and hold down the Option key to make the Library appear
You can also use this command in a Terminal window to remove the hidden flag.
    * Mac HD > Applications > Utilities > Terminal
    * chflags nohidden ~/Library

Make sure that you Printer Sharing enabled on the Mac Mini.   System Preferences > Sharing > Printer Sharing
Do the same on the PC
On the PC, try downloading and installing Bonjour Print Services for Windows v2.0.2
Run the application on the PC to see if it will discover your printer and install the printer.

  • Flash drive no longer works after being connected to a Windows XP machine.

After being opened on a Windows XP machine, the contents of my flash drive now shows up on my Macbook pro as a single .lnk file. What happened? It's MS-DOS (FAT32).
Is there any way out of this or has all my data been lost? I've never experienced this issue previously.

Thanks. I've now scanned it with both Sophos and ClamXav and both have come up negative for infection.
At least while the scan was running I could see that all my data is still there as the name of each file appeared as it was going through the scan.
My efforts to sort this out seem to have made things worse as now it opens up word whenever I try to see the contents. I'll try it on a PC tomorrow and see if I can figure out what happened. Looks like the file system has been damaged in some way.

  • AEBS drops connection on one computer but not other

I have no idea what is going on. I have read a few threads in the AEBSn forum about intermittent dropouts after a firmware update, but mine is an older AEBSb/g. The strange thing is that I have my iBook and my iMac side-by-side, and most of the time the iBook connects effortlessly to the Airport Network (and then the internet), while the iMac sits there scanning for a network and not discovering one. Sometimes I am able to connect to the network initially on the iMac, but then it suddenly drops to no bars of reception, and I can't get back online. Sometimes it will automatically join again, or sometimes not.
I have taken to having the iBook connected to the Airport, and then sharing its internet connection with the iMac through the ethernet so that I can get the iMac online. I needed to do this to use Software Update to see if there were some updates that might fix this problem, but to no avail.
Right now the iMac is online, with 2 bars in the airport, and the iBook is also connected with full strength. Sigh. I just don't understand. The iMac has been my main computer for many years, and has been connecting to the airport for the last couple of years without major incident.
I did use the iBook to configure the AEBS recently, as I needed to change the network from WPA2 to just plain WPA to allow the iBook to join the network. But I'm pretty sure that the intermittent connection on the iMac started before I did that. In fact, I think I used the iBook to configure the AEBS because I couldn't keep the iMac connected long enough to change anything.
This is the longest the iMac has been online in quite some time. I am also able to switch to an external disk and start up in OS X 10.3.9 on the iMac (I created this startup disk when I upgraded to 10.5). It seems to connect just fine to the network/internet. In fact, after I do that and switch back to 10.5, I seem to have more luck connecting again in 10.5. But still not full signal strength - it fluctuates between 2 and 4 bars.
Anyway, I thought I'd start a new thread on this because of my situation with the two computers. It seems to rule out interference, anyway.

I just want to clarify that when I say the iBook is connected to the Airport, I mean it has joined my network wirelessly.

  • Airport Express Can't Connect on a Windows XP Machine!  PLEASE Help!

I recently purchased an Apple Airport Express. In my household we have four computers, 3 Mac's and 1 PC. I set it all up, and of course, the PC can't connect to the Airport Express.
So you probably ask yourself why I haven't gone to iFelix's site yet. I have, many, many times tried to do what he says. Doesn't work at all, no matter which way I put it.
I got the equivalent key and everything and it still doesn't work on the PC. Honestly, I have no idea what to do and I'm getting extremely frustrated. PLEASE help me! I don't even know where to get started anymore.

For what it is worth, I just spent the last two days trying to get a brand new Airport Extreme (N/gig) and Airport Express working at home with many Windows XP and WDS problems. I also couldn't get my PSP to connect via WPA.
I have a Cisco 1200 AP working with b/WEP, but bought the Apple products to move to G/N/WPA and bridge from my office (DSL location) to wired devices in my living room. AirTunes was an anticipated plus. I started out with WEP "transitional" as my Extreme security setting.
At first my work laptop (XP with Funk Odyssey WiFi client SW), an old PocketPC and Wii were the only things that would connect to the Extreme base station. My PSP would work, but only via WEP. Our two other wireless XP devices would see the new network but would seem to fail at encryption. I also could not get the Express to connect with the Extreme for WDS.
Switching from WEP "transitional" to WPA/WPA2 Personal did the trick. The two other Windows XP devices worked all of a sudden via WPA, and the WDS/bridging to the Express kicked in. The bad news is the PocketPC only supports WEP, but all the other devices (including two XP devices) worked without a problem. (Hmmm... I think my Nintendo DS also only supports WEP...)

  • Zen Micro freezes up upon connection to my Windows XP machine

Okay, so Zen Micro is recognized just fine by Win98 after installing the drivers and software off it's CDrom, but as soon as I try to connect it to WinXP SP2 after installing the software, it decides there's an error. a little bubble pops up saying "USB Device Not Recognized
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and Windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message." The screen on the mp3 player freezes up also. I have a usb key installed on the computer to, could XP be getting confused? I also already tried downloading the software off the net, same problem.
Could people please help? It would be greatly appreciated.

You are using Lion, so you need to download and install AirPort Utility 5.6 for Lion as Tesserax suggests.
AirPort Utility 5.6 for Mac OS X Lion
Use the Manual Setup option on AirPort Utility 5.6 and click the Wireless tab to display the settings page. You may need to hold down the option key on a Mac or might be Alt on a PC to display the "Join a wireless network" setting for Wireless Mode.
You can keep both AirPort Utility 5.6 and 6.1 on your Mac and use the one that you want.

  • Maintain IWeb site from Windows (Vista) based machine

Just checking...I don't suppose there is anyway in <edited by host> I can manage or update an Iweb site from a windows based machine - which I've been asked to do. If this is possible, I'd love to hear how it might be done.
    TIA

    Welcome to the discussions, CabanaKid.
No, it's not possible. iWeb keeps everything in it's Domain file and only iWeb can open and publish from that file.

  • Can't connect 2200d on Windows 7 to XP machine

I need help sharing my LaserJet 2200d running on Windows 7 with another computer running XP. The HP LaserJet was originally installed on the XP 32 bit machine and it ran fine. I bought a new computer with Windows 7, 64 bit and Windows automatically installed the software for the printer and it works fine on Windows 7. I have printer sharing turned on and the XP machine CAN find the HP printer across the network. In reading the HP web support on this topic I did try to configure the HP LaserJet for both 64 bit and 32 bit (x86) drivers. However, when I follow through the step outlined on this page - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?objectID=c02030517 I run into a problem in locating the proper driver. I keep getting an error message saying that I do not have the correct file. I tried all HP 2200 PCL 5 drivers that I could find on this link, including the universal driver - http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareIndex.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&prodNameId=28862&pr... but non of them worked. I kept getting the message that I do not have the correct driver. The exact error message is "The requested location does not contain the driver for the HP LaserJet 2200 Series PCL 5 for the requested processor architecture. What driver do I need to install on my windows 7 machine in order to allow the HP 2200d PCL 5 printer to be shared with my 32 bit XP machine and where do I find it? Thanks very much, Dan

Hi guys!  Had the same issue with a client.  Just found the solutions brainstorming (and the red bull helped!!)  This is tested on a Windows x64 machine sharing the printer on the network and attempting to connect via a Windows XP machine.  The printer has been previously shared amongst other Windows 7 x64 machine successfully.
The solution is to install the HP Universal Printer Driver - PCL5 version on the machine where the printer is connected locally FOR THE SAME PRINTER THUS CREATING A SECOND PRINTER USING THE UNVERSAL DRIVER.
After downloading the file, it will unzip and start the installation.  Choose the existing printer using the same port ( it will say ie DOT4 - HP Laserjet 2200).  Once it completes, unclick [ ] Set as default and complete the operation.  Now go to the Printers listing.  Under the HP Lasterjet 2200 printer there should be two printers listed - one using the Windows 7 x64 biut driver and the other using the HP Universal driver
Now, on the Windows XP machine, use the same Universal Printer Drviver and find the printer by browsing the network for the computer.  You should see the HP Universal Printer.  Select it and continue with the installation.  Once completed, print a test page.    PRESTO!!!
Hope it works.  In the middle of a my runs so if you need more elaboration, give me a bit to answer back.

  • Can't connect to Windows 7 Machine

    Hello All,
I'm getting increasingly frustrated with this issue! I have a Mac Pro running 10.8.4 that I'm trying to connect to a Windows 7 machine. I need to transfer lots of files from this Mac to the Windows 7 machine as it will be replacing it eventually. I've found the ip address of the windows machine (192.168.0.71) and, using Command-K to connect to the "server" I type "smb://192.168.0.71" ... Everything should be groovy but I keep getting the error:
"There was a problem connecting to the server. The Share does not exist on the server. Please check the share name and try again."
What in the world does this mean? The Windows machine is set up to be visible, shared, drives can be accessed, and in those drives, the permissions are such that EVERYONE can access. I'm totally lost and very frustrated.
Am I doing something stupid? Does anyone have any suggestions?! Thanks in advance!!!
