Rmi-EOFException

I debuged a class for RMI,but it throws EOFException,
as follows:
java.rmi.UnmarshalException: Error unmarshaling return header; nested exception
is:
java.io.EOFException
at sun.rmi.transport.StreamRemoteCall.executeCall(StreamRemoteCall.java:
203)
at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(UnicastRef.java:133)
at jdeveloper.rmi.HelloImpl_Stub.sayHello(Unknown Source)
at jdeveloper.rmi.HelloClient.main(HelloClient.java:15)
Caused by: java.io.EOFException
at java.io.DataInputStream.readByte(DataInputStream.java:278)
at sun.rmi.transport.StreamRemoteCall.executeCall(StreamRemoteCall.java:
189)
... 3 more
I want to your answer!

I got this error only, if I hadn't control the data objects transported via rmi.
1. Have you the same version of the transport class on client and server?
2. Have you implements Externalizable? Proof, if you write the hole Data.
3. Check Your Classpath, often an old class is the troublemaker.
best regards

  • Occassional RMI EOFException

    Hi I am having serious trouble with an RMI exception that refuses to enter my control.
    The system I'm building is a game where the server has two main methods which are:
    //accessed from paint method
    public ScreenObjects getScreenObjects(Authentication authentication) throws RemoteException;
    //client actions
    public void mousePressed(Authentication authentication, MouseAction ma, String actionString) throws RemoteException;
    The first is remote accessed by the client paint method to find the current position
    of the BaseMovableObjects that are maintained by the server, the second is invoked by the client each time a player clicks the mouse. The server does not implement MouseListener, it is just a poorly named method that basically sends Strings of keypresses and coordinates from the client to the server which applies them to modify the positions of its BaseMovableObjects, which are the ones returned by the getScreenObjects method.
    Somehow these methods seem to interfere with each other, because if I open a number of clients and click frenetically in one then every once in a while a getScreenObjects call will fail to read with the following exception:

    java.io.EOFException
    I've tried to synchronize the server methods and all manipulations of the BaseMovable entities on the server but it doesn't seem to make any difference aside from slowing down the server.
    Also, if the methods are somehow interfering with each other why am I not getting a concurrent modification error, but a read error on the client side? The server never throws any exceptions.
    Yes I have looked through previous posts on this issue but none that addresses my problem.
    All data that is passed is serialized, I'm building the project in NetBeans so I'm assuming that
    it doesn't maintain old class files in the run path. And also if there was a class missmatch shouldn't it be constant or at least very frequent? I'm at a loss for what to do, any help would be welcome.

    Also the problem doesn't occur with frequent calls to the same method that is getScreenObjects(). I can have multiple clients calling that function about 40+ times per second and it never seems to cause an error. The error seemingly is always caused when a mouseEvent triggered in the client calls a remote method on the server whilst the server is doing something else, maybe updating the location of entities, maybe sending ScreenObjects to another client. The only thing I can think of that would cause problems is if the object that is being sent to the paint method is altered by the mousePressed method whilst it is in the process of being transferred. Why I've been trying to synchronize everything I can, but I'm not even vaguely convinced that I'm on the right track

  • RMI - Unmarshell Exception - Nested Exception is java.io.EOFException

    Hi,
    I get the following error while executing my RMI client.
    The fact is that i dont get this everytime. When i make nearly 4000 RMI method calls then for the further method calls i get the exception as given below..
    *java.rmi.UnmarshalException: Error unmarshaling return header; nested exception is:*
    *     java.io.EOFException*My RMI Client Implementation is like this.
    - Create a static object of RMI Client
    m_objRmiServiceProxy = (IExposedInterface) Naming.lookup(ConnectionURL);And use the same object for all my further rmi server calls....
    can anyone tell me when we will get the above exception?
    What can be the possible cause for it ?
    Thanks...

    If you find an answer elsewhere please let me know, your problem seems to be very much akin to what my program is experiencing. Just one question, is your program affected by the error if you call the one remoteserver method consecutive times or if you call multiple methods in parallel?

  • Using Applets and RMI on WL6 - Error marshaling transport header; nested exception is:  - java.io.EOFException

    I have a project that I am porting from WL5.1 to WL6. It was working fine
    in WL5.1
    but cannot get it working in WL6. So, I went back to the HelloWorld
    example to
    see if I could get it working. The problem I am having is basically getting
    applet to
    talk to a server via RMI. The applet works fine alone and RMI works fine
    alone.
    I can't get the applet to talk to the server via RMI.
    I am trying to get the "HelloWorld" applet example in WL6 working with RMI.
    I previously had the same app working in WL5.1 with SP9 but cannot get it
    working in WL6.
    I am running WebLogic Server 6.0 with SP2.
    I have registered a startup class in the WebLogic console
    named "HelloServer". When starting up the server, it states
    that the HelloImpl class has been registered as "HelloServer".
    When starting up the client applet I get the following error:
    java.rmi.MarshalException: Error marshaling transport header; nested
    exception is:
    java.io.EOFException
    These are two different methods of looking up the same object.
    The exception occurs at the "lookup" method call in both cases.
    "myserver" is the name of my machine that WL is running on.
    7001 is the port that WL is using.
    Registry reg = LocateRegistry.getRegistry("myserver", 7001);
    obj = (Hello)reg.lookup("HelloServer");
    or...
    obj = (Hello)weblogic.rmi.Naming.lookup("rmi://" +
    getCodeBase().getHost() + ':' + port + "/HelloServer");
    I previously ran this same program under WL5.1 SP9 and everything works
    fine.
    I defined the startupClass in the weblogic.properties file in WL5.1
    Can anyone tell my what is causing this exception and how to correct the
    problem?
    Thanks

  • Java.io.EOFException while returning a large object using RMI

    Hello
    I am having an issue with RMI which seems to be quite common (given the given the amount of matches in Google) but for which I can find a way out.
    In my application there 2 RMI objects , say OBJECT1 and OBJECT2. For OBJECT1 to get stuff from the database it gives a call to OBJECT2, which in turn fetches it from the DB and provides it back to OBJECT1.
    It is in such a call from OBJECT1 that i get the following exception.
    Caused by: java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is:
    java.io.EOFException
    at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(UnicastRef.java:164)

    at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(UnicastRef.java:146)
    ... 15 more
    The rows retrieved from the DB are stored in a user-defined array (serializable incl. all the subcomponents except for the primitive data fields) and the same is return back from OBJECT2.
    Interesting thing is that this exception occurs only when the number of rows retrieved by OBJECT2 is exceeds a certain limit, i.e. when the no. of rows are less the application works perfectly.
    Tried the following based on what was mentioned in different posts: Added following parameters to the JVM startup call.
    -Dsun.rmi.server.exceptionTrace=true - did not get any pointers
    -Dsun.rmi.log.debug=true
    -Dsun.rmi.transport.connectionTimeout=600000 - cause the time for the DB query was above the default time of 15 sec
    I am using Sun j2sdk1.4.2_13 for the application.
    Any pointers to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

    ronpg wrote:
    The issue is solved by increasing the VM max. memory parameters!if you want to avoid issues like this in the future, check out RMIIO. it provides an api for a "streaming remote iterator" over rmi, so you wouldn't have too read all this data into memory at once (causing memory exhaustion issues).

  • Please, help in RMI UnmarshalException: nested exception is: EOFException

    Good day,
    I have a problem in sample program, similar like an Oracle oriinal in "Getting Started Usin Java RMI", identically on server and client sides. It correctly works in NetBeans IDE, but never alone, as JAR archive or java class, if I used java -jar or java -classpath command-line form. Fragment of the server code includes final check on correct read from remote object, it corrrectly works within NetBeans but cause UnmarshalException in same server side in independent launch form (WeatherBean - sample object, contains points to information about city name, weather description, temperathure an small "weather" icon, WeatherService - interface with one getWeatherInformation() function):
                   String serverObjectName = "WeatherService";
                   final int remotePort = 1099;
                   final String remoteHost = "localhost";

  • Java.io.EOFException

    Hello,
    I am getting the following error while calling a remote IF method of a stateless
    EJB.
    com.ibi.agent.TuxAgent : UnmarshalException : error unmarshalling arguments; nested
    exception is:
    java.io.EOFException
    com.ibi.agent.TuxAgent: error unmarshalling arguments; nested exception is:

    java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling arguments; nested exception is:

    java.io.EOFException

    Has anyone encountered this error while accessing the Remote IF methods. If so,
    what you did to resolve this problem? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    - Aravind.

    Apurb,
    The problem is resolved.
    I tried to pass a hashtable of Tuxedo wrapper objects of type TypedFML. They were
    told to be implementing java.io.serializable.
    Then, when I tried to serialise/deserialise the object, i got an EOF Exception.
    So, I just passed a simple java type as parameter to my rmi call and made the
    EJB to handle the building of those wrapper classes.
    Thanks,
    Aravind.

    In any of the RPD deployments I'm getting the same error , not for some particular RPD .
    FYI , yesterday (before this issue) I had a issue with starting presentation services , so as adviced in forum I replaced the files sawguidstate and sawguidstate.atrin the location:
    <Instance_Home>\instances\<instance_name>\bifoundation\OracleBIPresentationServicesComponent\coreapplication_obips1\catalog\<project>\root\system\mktgcache\<name>
    with the same files from a backup or from another working OBIEE 11g (11.1.5)instance.
    plese refer : Re: Unable to start presentation services , in OBIEE 11g
    Is this causing the deployment issue ?

  • Java.rmi.ServerException: RuntimeException

    Hi All,
    i had an issue related to sockets.Please see the code below where am getting the following exception,
    java.rmi.ServerException: RuntimeException; nested exception is:
    java.lang.RuntimeException: java.io.EOFException
    what my concern is while debugging am not getting this issue.
    code comes here-----------------------------------------------
    Socket s = null;
    byte[] readBytes1 = null;
    try {
    s = new Socket(txControlServer, 7777);
    SocketObject sob = makeSocketObject(pFromFiles, pToFiles, pCorrStylesheets,
    pHTMLUtilityServer, pOrientation, pDocumentClassif, pClientInfo, pFormats,
    pCorrCode, images);
    ObjectOutputStream oos = new ObjectOutputStream(s.getOutputStream());
    oos.writeObject(sob);
    ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(s.getInputStream());
    readBytes1 = ((SocketObject) ois.readObject()).getFileData();
    System.out.println("The byte length " + readBytes1.length);
    ois.close();
    oos.close();
    s.close();
    System.out.println("\n----------------The length of the bytes read first ----- "
    + readBytes1.length);
    catch (Exception e) {
    ExceptionUtil.wrap(e);
    Am getting the exception at this line in the above code
    ObjectInputStream ois = new ObjectInputStream(s.getInputStream());
    Can any one help me out why this problem occurs and how to resolve.
    Thanks in Advance,
    vamsy.

    The other side has closed the socket before sending you an object.

  • Basic RMI program works in windows but not Linux

    Hello,
    I'm trying to learn RMI for a program at work.
    I have the book "Core Java 2 - Volume 2 - Advanced Features". Chapter 5 of this book is about RMI.
    The most basic example program they use works fine in Windows. However, when I try to run this same program under linux it doesn't work.
    For now, I'm not even trying to run a client (in linux)...just the server.
    Here is the server code.
    public class ProductServer
    public static void main(String args[])
    try
    System.out.println
    ("Constructing server implementations...");
    ProductImpl p1
    = new ProductImpl("Blackwell Toaster");
    ProductImpl p2
    = new ProductImpl("ZapXpress Microwave Oven");
    System.out.println
    ("Binding server implementations to registry...");
    Naming.rebind("rmi://172.20.101.1/toaster", p1);
    Naming.rebind("rmi://172.20.101.1/microwave", p2);
    System.out.println
    ("Waiting for invocations from clients...");
    catch(Exception e)
    e.printStackTrace();
    What is very interesting is that this call works
    Naming.rebind("rmi://172.20.101.1/toaster", p1);
    But the very next line
    Naming.rebind("rmi://172.20.101.1/microwave", p2);
    Throws this error ::
    java.rmi.UnmarshalException: Error unmarshaling return header: java.io.EOFException
    at sun.rmi.transport.StreamRemoteCall.executeCall(StreamRemoteCall.java:221)
    at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(UnicastRef.java:366)

    at java.rmi.Naming.rebind(Naming.java:172)
    at ProductServer.main(ProductServer.java:35)
    I would very much appreciate the help. Thank You.

    We solved the problem
    Apparently, on the linux machine we had both gcc and the jdk installed
    the regualar compile command hit the jdk
    the rmic command used the gcc version of rmic
    the rmiregistry used the gcc version of rmiregistry
    the regular run command hit the jdk
    using the rmic and rmiregistry in the jdk made everything work fine
    I knew it had to be a stupid answer.

    Hi Pyung,
    How about trying this instead:
    InitialContext ctx = new InitialContext();
    MediatorInterface mediator = (MediatorInterface) ctx.lookup("TestMediator");
    This assumes your startup class binds the Mediator to the JNDI name "TestMediator".

  • UnmarshalException with nested EOFException on Naming.lookup()

    I have an RMI server object that creates its own RMI registry and binds, like this:
         Registry registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(1099);
         registry.bind("JournalReceiver", this);I run this from the command line to get it started. Everything looks good.
    My client is running as a webapp in Tomcat (on the same machine), and it executes this call:
            receiver = (RmiJournalReceiverInterface) Naming.lookup("JournalReceiver");and gets this error
    java.rmi.UnmarshalException: error unmarshalling return; nested exception is:
         java.io.EOFException
         at sun.rmi.registry.RegistryImpl_Stub.lookup(Unknown Source)
         at java.rmi.Naming.lookup(Naming.java:84)It is clear that I'm reaching the registry, and if I modify the code to intentionally lookup the wrong name I get a "not bound error", so I'm pretty confident that my server object is indeed bound to that name. Beyond that, I'm lost.
    Any thoughts?
    jb

    OK - the problem was an incorrect codebase.
    My server object creates its own registry with
           Registry registry = LocateRegistry.createRegistry(1099);
         registry.bind("JournalReceiver", this);and I get the UnmarshalException with nested EOFException, as shown above.
    However, if I set up an outside registry with 'rmiregistry', and use
            Naming.rebind("JournalReceiver", this)then I get the UnmarshalException with nested ClassNotFoundException, which has shown up in several threads.
    So, following the advice given in those threads, I fix the codebase like this:
    java -Djava.rmi.server.codebase=file:/var/local/jb/RmiReceiver.jar \
       org.nsdl.RmiJournalReceiverand it works as advertised, even when I go back to my original lines of binding code.
    Thanks again for the help.

  • RMI Client UnmarshalException with UNC paths

    I have a 'none' Java application, that has an embedded JVM which is being used as an RMI server to allow communication to the application from a browser. The applet detects the presence of the RMI server and if not detected, will start the application, which in turns starts the RMI server. Once the RMI server is started the Client then invokes the method on the server, and hence into the application.
    If the executable for this application is pathed to either a local or mapped drive then everything works as expected, if I then try to use a UNC path, once the RMI server is started, the client returns an UnmarshalException:
    java.rmi.UnmarshalException: Error unmarshaling return header; nested exception is:
    java.io.EOFException
    java.io.EOFException
    at java.io.DataInputStream.readByte(Unknown Source)
    at sun.rmi.transport.StreamRemoteCall.executeCall(Unknown Source)
    at sun.rmi.server.UnicastRef.invoke(Unknown Source)
    at sun.rmi.registry.RegistryImpl_Stub.lookup(Unknown Source)
    at java.rmi.Naming.lookup(Unknown Source)
    I guess that the problem is that the serialization process has been started, and as the client starts reading from the datastream the UNC paths cause the EOF Exception. any help on how to get round this problem would be gratefully received. Unfortunately using a mapped drive is not a solution to this problem due to the way the application is being served.

    Hi all,
    It turns out that when the java.policy file is being read, it ignores the servername on the UNC path and therefore looks for a directory of the remaining data of the UNC path for the file. I guess it is now a task of figuring out why this is...
