Reinstalling OS X Tiger Server on XServe doesn't start...

We bought an XServe some 6 months ago now hoping that it could solve the unique problem we have. We're a small organisation with only a few members in the tech team - and we're constantly busy trying to develop and support our own product. We wanted a server solution to handle the standard services (DHCP, DNS, printing, etc...) that wasn't Windows-based. But there's only one chap in the organisation with full-on *nix skills. The other techs are relative *nix noobs.
So, the XServe and Tiger Server presented a compelling answer: a solution that provided all the power, robustness and scaleability of *nix server services, but with Apple's great UI for managing the services, with little hardcore server knowledge. Basically, it had to stay up, work consistently and be quick and very simply to administer for someone with little specific server config knowledge.
I suppose the XServe has served this purpose, but we're getting consistent problems with SMB file permissions, Windows interactions and issues with permissions on AFP file shares.
I think this has to do with my initial install of Tiger Server. I don't think the DNS and the Open Directory were set up properly, and I think this could be the root of all the file permission problems we're having. Therefore, we decided to backup and wipe the machine and start again.
So, I've got a very useful install guide from AFP548 that talks me through getting DNS working first, then setting up the Open Directory, etc...
HOWEVER
I can't get OS X Server to install. I've got the server DVD in the drive of the XServer, been through the process of putting it into 'light 1' mode using the buttons on the front of the XServe (so it boots from CD), and I'm using the Server Assistant from my Powerbook across a wired network.
I can go through the server assistant process as far as the install starting, but then I'm just left with a screen that says 'Installing...' and 'Installing Mac OS X Server on volume <Server HD>' and an empty progress bar. It just seems to hang and nothing happens.
I've tried:
- disk utility to check the disk for issues (nothing reported)
- booting the Xserve in firewire target mode and installing from my laptop (installer gets to the same place 'preparing hard disk' and gets no further)
- using disk utility on another laptop to erase the XServe's HD first, with the XServe in FW target disk mode (disk utility hangs when I click the 'erase' button).
So, I'm a bit stuck chap and chapesses. Everything points to a problem with the disk somehow (although it would have to be something that disk utility couldn't pick up), but I'm damned if I know what it is!
Any help would be much appreciated.

Have you a large hammer?
Just kidding, but I do think that you are on to something with it rebooting into the old OS just like nothing happened.
Unfortunately I have never actually encountered this so I am just tossing out suggestions. It sounds to me that you have already covered most of the bases that I would/could suggest.
Have you checked this manual http://manuals.info.apple.com/en/MacOS_X_Server_v10.4_GettingStarted.pdf
I know it is basic but perhaps an answer is in there. I wish I could be of more help but I still haven't got that pony either ;>)
Luck and keep us posted.

  • How can I share a Tiger server's User database to a Panther server?

I need some help to set this up. Keep in mind I do not have a DNS server.
I have a Tiger server with Xserve and an older Panther server, both on the same local network. I have a whole bunch of users setup on the Tiger server. The Panther server does not have any users setup on it. I do not want to have to type in all the users all over again in the Panther server. What I'd like to be able to do is somehow share and syncronize the user database on the Tiger server with the Panther server.
I looked into the Open Directory settings but I do not understand what to do. How do I configure the Tiger and Panther servers respectively so the Panther server can sync with the Tiger server's users database. Is this possible? It seems like it with Open Directory, one being the Open Directory Master and the other being the Open Directory Replica? But I just don't understand how to set this up. Also the Panther OD settings seem quite different than Tiger's in Open Directory.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    Hi
It may be best to set up your 10.4 Server as an Open Directory Master first and then use Directory Access on your 10.3 Server to connect to the Tiger Server so as it can use the same User Database. This should be possible. OD Master/Replica relationships are not possible if the OS versions are different, even if the Master was 10.4.11 and the Replica was 10.4.10. You have no chance when its 10.4 and 10.3.
    http://images.apple.com/server/macosx/docs/OpenDirectory_Adminv10.5.pdf
The link is for 10.5 but the basics are the same. This is a recent post that describes how to set up an OD Master:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1377046&tstart=0
I'm guessing that your 10.4 Server is Standalone and is serving simple file services only (AFP and possibly SMB/Windows). If this is the case (and I can't see how it can't be) then your users will be in the local NetInfo node. This will be the default node that is presented to you in WorkGroup Manager. You always get a warning that your are working in an invisible node (if you have not disabled this) when working in the Server's local node. Don't worry there is nothing wrong with the warning. WorkGroup Manager on Panther (10.3) Server works the same way.
You could if you wanted to simply export the Users and Groups from WGM in 10.4 and import them into WGM on 10.3. This should save you having to key them all in again. If the prospect of configuring internal DNS Services and all that goes with it seems to much for you then this is probably the simplest option. How do you do this? Launch WGM (its the same for both versions), select the Server Menu and select Export after first selecting desired users. Do the same for Groups. Use the same procedure in reverse. The Users and Groups files are not very big and can easily be transferred using a memory stick etc.
There are differences between the two versions which are mostly to do with Server Admin. In 10.4 Server there are more services. One of the Services will be Open Directory. In 10.4 Open Directory will only show a green light by the side of the service if it is in any role other than Standalone. Server Admin on 10.3 Server will always show the green light by the side of the Open Directory Service. This does not mean that it is an OD Master, you have to click on Settings and inspect the Role to see what it actually is.
You should be able to connect to a 10.3 Server with 10.4's Admin tools but don't be tempted to use Server Admin to configure/change anything on the 10.3 Server. You should not be able to go the other way 10.3 > 10.4 using the same tools.
Internal DNS Services are a requirement for LDAP Services (and pretty much everything else) on Servers generally, although for simple file services not absolutely necessary. Internal DNS Services do not have to be configured on the Server itself just as long as they are configured on another server, for example, on the same network. If these are the only two servers on the network then you will have to configure DNS Services on either one or both of them depending on what you want.
Not available on your 10.3 Server but is on your 10.4 Server are Access Control Lists (ACLs). This is a permissions model that is in addition to the standard POSIX permissions. Think carefully about how you provide permissions to your network clients if there is a mix of client OS, 10.3, 10.4 etc.
    Hope this helps, Tony

  • FIM Synchronization Service doesn't start

    Hi,
Recently we have migreated FIM database from the local SQL server to an SQL 2012 Cluster. I used the following guide to configure DB related settings. Things worked fine.
    http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/5465.fimilm-how-to-move-the-backend-sql-server-synchronization-service-database.aspx
However after I uninstalled local SQL and rebooted the server FIM service doesn't start. The error message is:
The Forefront Identity Manager Sychronization Service depends the following service: MSSQLSERVER. This service might not be installed. (Event ID 7003).
    How to fix this problem?
    Thank you for your help.

I assume that you have uninstalled MS SQL Server, right? If so, please try the following:
Remove MSSQLServer from the DependOnService Value Name, a REG_MULTI_SZ data type
    at HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\<ServiceKey>
Run as admin - it would remove dependency from FIMSynchronizationService.

  • Will "Tiger Server - Xserve Install DVD" install on non-Xserve Mac ?

    Hi All...
I had four G5 Xserves (now sold) but I still hold and own the Tiger Server DVD and Licences. I am buying an old Mac Mini that had Tiger originally installed, but has been upgraded to Leopard... my question is will my old DVD "Tiger Server - Xserve Install DVD" let me install on a mac OTHER THAN an Xserve... I am suspicious as the Licence starts off with "XSVR-...." which makes me think it may be a special install DVD configured for the Xserve only... ???
    Appreciate a confirmation either way..
    Thnx
    MOKA

Thanks very much for your comments... It does not have any other comments on it other than Version 10.4.3 and Mac OS X Server Xserve Install DVD.
I think you are likely correct and I will give it a try
    Thnx again !!

  • Mac OS X Tiger Server - SLOW BOOT

Our XServe runs Mac OS X Tiger Server with an external 800 GB RAID 5 setup. The internal Tiger Server OS resides on the XServe's internal 80 GB hard drive.
The server runs fine after the boot up process. However, when restarting the server for maintenance purposes, the server will sit at the gray screen with the spinning gear for 10 - 30 minutes while the internal 80 GB hard drive runs continuously. I was wondering what processes Mac OS X Server is completing during the startup that makes getting to the log in screen take so long?
Booting the XServe in single user mode is very fast. Booting in Safe Mode (shift key) takes a long time also.
    Any insight would be appreciated.

The boot sequence is explained here:
    http://developer.apple.com/documentation/MacOSX/Conce
    tual/BPSystemStartup/index.html
    I did review this material.
    To troubleshoot this, check /var/log/system.log.?
(pick the one for the day of the last restart) and
read the messages and note the times of the messages
to see what was happening when. Feel free to post
sections. If that doesn't provide clues, the next
boot hold down the CMD (Apple) and v keys which will
give you a verbose boot (lot's of messages) the last
couple before the wait would be the most
    interesting.
As I get some time, I will run the actions described above and report back the results.
I may have jumped a bit because you were saying that
your 80 GB filesystem was on, is the 800GB filesystem
    journalled too?
Both the drive units are journalled for this XServe system.

  • Leopard client controls view of tiger server share point

Hi, recently purchased a Mac Mini running Leopard all patched. Connected via afp to a Xserve RAID, Xserve running a sharepoint using ACL's. In list view the leopard client controls the list view on the Xserve, meaning that all the other Tiger clients see the leopard clients folder structure when they connect to the sharepoint. I have not changed any settings on the Xserve, just re-propogated the permissions and ACL's.
    Any ideas would be great,
    Andy

  • Tiger Server: Default MySQL works for phpMyAdmin but not command line ? ? ?

    Greetings all,
I followed the excellent instructions at
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=132783&tstart=0
on upgrading PHP to version 5 and getting (the preinstalled) MySQL setup with phpMyAdmin
I can connect through the phpMyAdmin, create new dbs, etc. Problem is that now I CAN'T connect from the command line. (I originally set my new root password from the command line and that's the last time I could connect from there!
Now I get the dreaded ERROR 2002 when I attempt:
    /usr/bin/mysql -h localhost -u root -p
If I use the IP address or hostname instead of "localhost" (after -h) I get a ERROR 2003. Dropping the -h and hostname from the line above still gets me a ERROR 2002.
My phpMyAdmin config is a connect type "TCP" not socket, which might be one reason it works and the command line doesn't, but I still don't know where I've gone wrong.
My /var/mysql/* is all owned by mysql and group www.
I'm finding lots of people asking about the ERROR 2002, but not finding any solutions (particularly for Tiger Server). I'd prefer to use the preinstalled MySQL to installing a new installation (the thread referenced above says upgrading or removing the MySQL installation is too hard to do) and there has GOT to be a reasonable explanation for why it works with phpMyAdmin, but not the command line.
Thanks in advance for any replies!

  • Server Assistant doesn't start automatically

I reinstalled Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard on Mac mini Server,
but the Server Assistant didn't open automatically.
    In the manual I found:
Server Assistant opens automatically when you:
Finish installing Mac OS X Server v10.6 Snow Leopard
Start up a new server with Snow Leopard Server preinstalled
What is the right way to reinstall Mac OS X Server Snow Leopard
so that I can change the settings?

I attempted to install a new preinstalled 2.5 Ghz Mac Mini refurb, 10.6 server software, going the headless route that is suggested by Apple. I was not able to get the Server Assistant to start either, after I did get the setup window to take the root admin login, and the server key would never take. I wound up attaching keyboard, mouse, monitor and network cable to the Mini, then got the setup completed nicely, ran all updates, no additional problems.
It seems that the remote setup, which I attempted through another 10.6 MBP on the network, had installed the admin tools DVD, don't think I actually updated the admin tools (which could have added to the setup problems), never communicated fully with the setup software on the Mini.
My recommendations are to avoid the headless install with a mini. I have done headless installs on 10.4, 10.5, and 10.6 Xserves with no real problem. I don't know why there would be any difference for the same version OS.

  • Tiger server, Snow Leopard Client and Illustrator CS4

We have a strange problem happening with the one Snow Leopard client we have accessing our Tiger server. In certain directories (not in all) if the user opens an Illustrator CS4 file, makes changes and goes to save the file they get the message that the file is either locked or in use by another user (it is not). This does not happen with any other kind of file in that same directory. The server is connect to AD so the user accounts come from the AD but on this machine we have the same problem regardless of the user account used to mount the server volume. It also doesn't matter if I use a local account on the server to mount instead of AD. I have the same problem if I connect via SMB instead of AFP. Other machines (Leopard) can work on these files with no problems.
A couple of other bits of information which might be useful. If the user opens the file, does a save as to the same name and same folder and replaces the original they can work on the file and save it with no problems. As soon as they close the file and reopen it they have the problem again. Also, if they run into the problem, close all programs on the computer and try to unmount the server volume they get the message that the volume is in use and cannot be ejected. I have checked and there are no invisible files being created in the directory where this file resides.
What is strange is that the problem does not happen in all directories although when it happens it is repeatable in that directory. Happens every time. I have tried changing the name of the folder to something simple and it still happens.
Any suggestions on where to go with this problem??

No progress yet. Have tried a lot of things with preferences on the server. I have confirmed with another snow leopard machine that this is not related to the machine in any way. I have not yet had a chance to test it on another Tiger server but given the fact that you are seeing it as well I would say there is a problem with the two operating systems cooperating.
As I said, I do have a temporary workaround. If you do a save as with the document, choose to overrite the original it works and then lets you continue to work on that file and save for that session. After you close the file and reopen the problem returns but at least for that session you are fine.

  • Upgrading from Tiger Server (10.4) to Lion?

I have an Apple Xserve (Dual 2.66 GHz Xeon proccessors, currently running Tiger Server, 10.4) I'm hoping to upgrade to Lion. The server is used at a non-profit community center so we've had to pass on the last few upgrades (Leopard, Snow Leopard) given the price tags (~$500), but since Lion server was announced at only $50, I've been thinking about trying to upgrade it. From what I've read, this $50 copy is good for a full, clean install, and not just an upgrade-only version. Is that true?
So here's the real question; Can I upgrade straight from server 10.4 to server 10.7?
According to the Step 1 here (http://www.apple.com/macosx/server/how-to-buy/), I first need to upgrade to the latest version of Snow Leopard, but no way will I pay $500 for it. What are my options?
What happens if I install a standard (non-server) version of Snow Leopard on the server, then try to upgrade from there? Will I lose all server functionality? My assumption would be that this would result in upgrading most of my non-server applications, while leaving me with the 10.4 versions of all the server/administrator applications. Is this at all correct? Or do I lose all server functionality by using a standard user disc?
Any responses would be greatly appreciated. We're looking at spending several thousand dollars on an entirely new server, but if we can salvage this one for $50, it would be a no-brainer. Thanks!

Hello, bambe009, and welcome to the forums,
Because it hasn't actually shipped yet any answers here are speculation and nothing is actually known for certain.
That being said it does appear that the only means of distribution will be via the App Store (with some 'sort of' exemptions for large institutional and educational buyers) so some form of Leopard appears it will be necessary.
It may be possible that your client Leopard to Lion Server may very well work (there's nothing to stop you from installing client Leopard on the Xserve) but the obvious downside of this is that you will need to recreate all your services and accounts etc from scratch in Lion. There is a upgrade/migration path for going from 10.4 to either 10.5 or 10.6 that updates your old services and accounts from one server set-up to the new one. I speculate that Lion will have a similar system to move from Snow Leopard Server to Lion Server and assuming it does you would lose this moving from the client version to server.
In addition it seems that the Lion Server "add-on" is essentially $50 upgrade to the product itself making the total cost more like $80 total, but still distinctly less than before.
Again - this is several layers of speculation about a product that does not exist yet so several large grains of salt should be taken with this.
    My $.02,
    =Tod

  • Publish iCal Calendar using Tiger Server

I've been searching for a simple way to publish iCal calendars using Tiger Server. Here is what I need to do:
I need one user to be able to publish multiple "studio schedule" calendars to the Tiger server...and I need all the regular users in the studio to be able to subscribe to it so that they can see what work they have scheduled for the day. The regular users do NOT need to be able to make changes to the calendar...they only need to see it. (and print it if needed) Only the studio manager needs to be able to see and edit the published calendar.
I called Apple support for help on this one and they told me they would have to charge me $695 just for me to be able to get help on this....which surprised me because I'm just trying to use their software to do something it is supposed to be able to do! LOL The only other suggestion he could give was for me to look to the discussion groups here for help....so here I am!
    HELP!
    xServe G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   xServe G5

The first thing you need to do is set up WebDAV on the Server and share a directory. If you need instructions on how to that just follow this thread.
    http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=2793917#2793917
Once you've set up a shared directory you just publish the calendar to it from within iCal.
To do that, set up a calendar, select it and then select 'Publish' under the 'Calendar' menu. In the dialog box that opens up give the calendar a name without spaces. Select 'Publish on: a Private Server'.
In the field for 'Base URL:' fill-in the complete url to the server directory you set up previously using the WebDAV instructions. For example, if you set up a directory on the server called 'calendars' and the URL of the server is www.example.com you would put in 'Base URL: http://www.example.com/calendars'.
Now enter the 'Login' name and 'Password' for an account that has access to the shared directory as you've set it up using the WebDAV instructions.
Select the other options you want to enable in the dialog box and then click on 'Publish'. Now the calendar is published and available for others to subscribe to.
Now to subscribe to the calendar, just select 'Subscribe' under the 'Calendar' menu in iCal and enter the URL for the calendar. Using the example from above you would enter 'webcal://www.example.com/calendars/StudioWork.ics' for a calendar that was named 'StudioWork'.
You can also email the URL for the published calendar by selecting it in iCal and selecting 'Send Publish Email...' under the 'Calendar' menu in iCal.

Weird thing when I go in the Network configs.. I can't see the Airport Card.
But before with Tiger it was working fine.
And also when I boot in Windows XP (BootCamp).. there is no wireless problems.. I see the card and I can use it!
Is there a way to.. maybe try to manually load the kernel extension or completely reinstall the driver ? Would this fix the problem ?

Looks like there was a couple of updates to do and now it's working perfectly

  • Leopard Client to Tiger Server

I currently have roughly 80 eMacs that all connect to a 10.4.10 server. I have upgraded one of the computers to leopard and now the workgroup management piece seems to not be working properly.
I can login into the computer since it talks to AD for authentication but it doesn't not read the preferences from workgroup manager. (Blocked applications are able to be opened and shares do not mount)
This all works on 10.4.11 with no issues.
    Please help.

I finally got around to upgrading the Tiger server to 10.4.11. I have the same issue on the Leopard client of shares not mounting and applications (ie iTunes) being able to be opened. The other computers in the school all run 10.4.11 and the workgroup manager preferences work fine on those machines.
This laptop was upgraded to 10.5 so I'm not sure if that's where the problem lies. Perhaps I should try a clean install?

  • How To Uninstall Mac OS Tiger Server

I recently upgraded my OS from 10.2.8 to MAC OS Tiger Server. I would like to uninstall the Tiger and Install my original OS again. Can someone tell me how I can go about doing that. Thanks!

    Hi
Its been some time since I and probably most of the guys on these forums have used 10.2 but I think the procedure is the same for when you uninstall any client OS.
Boot from your 10.2 Installer disk, proceed to the part that selects the drive, select Options, select Archive and Install. You should get a further option to either preserve network users and settings or not.
If you preserve Network users and Settings after the reinstall and on successful log in you should see a folder created called Previous Systems. It should be safe to delete this. If you don't preserve network users and settings then on reboot the mac will present you with the Client Setup Assistant and walk you through initially configuring the mac for first use. It should remind you of the first time you purchased the mac and took it out of its box. You should still see the Previous Systems folder but this time don't be tempted to delete it. Within this folder will be the previous admin account's home folder. This folder will retain things like mail, mail settings and other important settings that you may need. Also anything else saving in your Documents folder as well as the Desktop will be there not forgetting iTunes, iMovie and iPhoto stuff.
When the operating system is OS X Server the situation is slightly different. You don't get the option to archive and install. It will either upgrade an existing version of the OS, either client or server, install for the first time, or erase and install.
    Hope this helps, Tony
