RMI from client browser?

I heard somebodies are developing solutions to do RMI from client browser,
is this a good idea?

The Limitations of RMI Applets on the Internet
Although using RMI in Internet-based applets seems like a good idea, in practice, the instability of Internet connections and a lack of client support make it impractical. Among the obstacles to deploying RMI applets on the Internet are the following:
* Despite supporting the majority of the Java 1.1 specification, the most popular web browsers -- Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer -- do not adequately support RMI. Navigator supports RMI on most platforms but does not support HTTP tunneling, so Netscape users connected to the web through a proxy server can't use an RMI applet. Meanwhile, Netscape for the Macintosh does not support RMI at all. Internet Explorer 4.0-5.0 also lacks RMI support, although a patch is supposedly available to add the missing classes (the RMI classes are available from Microsoft's web site, but instructions for installing them is not provided). As a result, a large percentage of Internet surfers can't use RMI applets in their current browser.
* The RMI registry can experience problems when handling connections via the Internet. A bug that causes the registry to stop accepting new connections occurs all too frequently with web-based RMI clients, requiring that the registry be shut down and restarted. Also, in Java runtime environments prior to JDK 1.2.2, server sockets created to handle connections from Internet-based RMI clients can live on indefinitely (consuming server resources) even after those clients are shut down.
* The RMI registry is not as flexible as most server applications, answering only to client connections made to one specific hostname. This means that your RMI server application cannot support multiple domains on a single web server, which limits your deployment options.
* Many applications may require that data exchanged between client and server be encrypted, compressed, or handled in some other fashion. Doing this with RMI is simple enough, requiring only that you implement your own socket classes and an RMI socket factory that creates your special sockets. However, overriding the default socket factory disables RMI's ability to do HTTP tunneling, thereby preventing access by proxy server users.
* Deploying an RMI server application requires additional network firewall configuration. By default, RMI objects are bound to random, "anonymous" server port numbers, making it impossible to predict the ports that must be available to Internet clients. RMI functionality new to Java 2 allows you to specify a port number when creating a remote object, but deployment still requires that firewalls allow access to ports not typically used by web-based applications.

  • JSPs not accessible from client browser

    Hi all,
I deployed a working, tested J2EE application on a Win 2003 server running OAS 10.1.2.0.2. The application deployed smoothly and is running fine from the server itself.
But from a client machine (another machine on our LAN), I am unable to access any JSP, including index.jsp. I am able to, however, access the login page if I supply the actual .do url (login/Login.do). I can see from the logs that login is completing successfully, but the resultant JSP page is again not thrown to the browser. I am getting a "server not found" error.
The server resides in the IP domain a.b.6.xxx, and the client has an IP like a.b.7.xxx. Could this cause any issues?
Any insights on this problems would be appreciated. Please ask for any other info that you need.
    Harish

    Hi ssivanan,
I need more information to asnwer for your question. Can you pls put your configuration ?
Here are some points I like to check.
+ Are you able to browse the contents locally, specifying own ip address on the one of servers ?
+ Do those servers have a route to vlan 30 ?
+ How does the browsing not working ? Can you elaborate ?
+ What do you see in "show conn" when it fails ?
Great documents on CCO. Worth checking.

  • Is request from client's PC or my database server?

    Hi, guys:
I am new to APEX. I would ask a question that may be silly. I need to develop a database project with APEX and Google map service. I notice there is limit for Google map service. I would assume if I write javascript code in APEX and send request to Google such as loading a map, the request is sent from client browser directly to Google map server, not from my database server to Google map server, so my application won't break the service limit. Is this assumption correct?
    Thanks a lot!
    Sam

    Hi,
Thanks for your help. I am concerned because Google may stop service as folllows. If the request is sent from a client PC, database server won't break quota assigned. Otherwise, we have to find another solution.

    Usage Limits
Use of the Google Geocoding API is subject to a query limit of 2,500 geolocation requests per day. (User of Google Maps API for Business may perform up to 100,000 requests per day.) This limit is enforced to prevent abuse and/or repurposing of the Geocoding API, and this limit may be changed in the future without notice. Additionally, we enforce a request rate limit to prevent abuse of the service. If you exceed the 24-hour limit or otherwise abuse the service, the Geocoding API may stop working for you temporarily. If you continue to exceed this limit, your access to the Geocoding API may be blocked.
Note: the Geocoding API may only be used in conjunction with a Google map; geocoding results without displaying them on a map is prohibited. For complete details on allowed usage, consult the Maps API Terms of Service License Restrictions.

  • I want my WS app. executes only from a browser link

I am planning to write a game in java and instead of using an applet, I am considering to use Web Start technology. However, there's one thing that I have been trying to find out in the last couple of hours is that, is it possible to restrict my app's excecusion from a browser link only? I dont want my application to be lunched through a desktop shortcut or any cache. The reason for this is that, I want to keep my game free, but show my users ads on my web site before they lunch the game. I also want to save bandwidh by keeping the game files on users machines. Especially the bandwidh issue, and the auto updates feature makes me consider WS over applets. I would appreciate any help, thank you...

It doesnt sound like even if you wanted to have a offline -dsiallowed this is exaclty what you want, you actually want to push some ad conent to the client as well from your server.
Although this isnt allowed as a configuration option in JNLP, one way to do this would be to have a simple server process that each client must register with and therefore allows you to send information from the server to the client each time the client starts up.
The client to server communication could be via any number of mechanisms, simple java.net.sockets, RMI, XML-RPC, CORBA, etc. If you have access to an app server on your server side I would prob use XML-RPC , otherwise if you have access to no app server just a JVM on your server side , you could use either RMI or java.net ServerSocket on your server side. (Sockets is easier but then you have to write alot of parsing logic if your messages are large in size).
I have deployed a web start application which must register with an an upstream app server which is not written in java, it does this via xml messages over sockets (using jaxb to parse the message content). The app will start but then sut down without first registering with the app server.
Let me know if this answered your question or if I was offbase and you were looking for something else?

  • Copy file from client PC to server in a web deployed application

I have developed one application using Oracle forms 6i, which is deployed on the web server.
I run this application from a client PC in Internet Explorer using internet.
I want to copy one file from the client PC to the web server.
    I have done following things
    - Created a shared folder on the server and given full rights to every one on this folder
    - I use 'net use' command in my program to connect to this shared folder
    - I use copy command to copy file from local client pc to server. This copy command I am executing using host command of my programming (PL/SQL: eg. host('copy abc.txt \\server\share\') )
    But this does not work.
When I do the same thing in command window, it works.
(ie. Start-Run cmd to open command window and then type the above copy command)
Can you please tell me, how to copy a file from client PC to the sever in Web deployed application?
    Thanks

I downloaded D2KWUtil from the link suggested by you. It has very nice example demo form. But the documentation provided says following
Using D2KWUTIL in Web Deployed Applications
The use of this library is not supported with Web deployed applications.
In a web deployment scenario not all functions within D2KWUTIL will work. Any function that interacts with the User Interface (such as those in the WIN_API_DIALOG package) will fail.
Any interaction with the O/S by other functions will all be executed on the NT server and will act within, or return information pertinant to, the environment on that machine. For instance GET_COMPUTER_NAME will return the Server’s name, not the name of the computer that the Client browser is running on. Likewise COPY_FILE will copy files in the Forms Server not on the Client.
Functions such as those in WIN_API_BITOP will continue to work without change.
so this will not work in web deployed application.
    Any other suggestion?
    Thanks

Firstly, let me state that I'm not a Swing programmer, so your mileage may vary. However I don't think a Swing solution is what you need. ADF BC will do this for you.
    Assumptions on my answer:
    1) You're generating the log_id from a database sequence and it is automatically populated in the UserLog table.
    2) You have 2 VOs, namely UserLogView and ActionLogView based on the EOs.
Create a View Link between each VO making UserLogView the master.
In your UI, once the user has inserted into UserLogView, include a bound create button for the ActionLogView such that it creates an associated ActionLogView record for the user when they wish to enter the log details. ADF BC will populate the ActionLogView Log_id with the parent's UserLogView log_id automatically. You'll then need to navigate to the ActionLogView screen to allow the user to enter the rest of the details.
As such, you don't need to expose the log_id to the client, ADF BC will take care of the population of the log_id correctly for you when creating the detail record.
Another approach may be to define one VO encompassing both EOs, where the ActionLog is a reference. Look at the JDevelope help page "View Object Wizard - Entity Objects Page", specifically at the "Reference" section for more info. You'll need to test out the updateable flag for both EOs defined within the VO to ensure you can update the values of both.
Test this out in the Business Components Browser before writing the UI to see if the ADF BC solution works, and saving you time in writing the UI.
    Hope this helps.

  • Error while sending request to Webservice from Client app on Weblogic

    Hi Everybody,
As part of web service development and deployment, I created one simple webservice and tried to deploy it on Apache Tomcat 5.5 and then weblogic 9.2. It worked fine on Apache Tomcat but it didn't work on Weblogic. Here are the steps I followed.
    1) Created a webservice within one Dynamic Web project
    2) Created a Client application
    3) Deployed both (by exporting war files from eclipse3.2) on Tomcat Apache locally on the same machine (localhost)
    4) Invoked client in the browser which allows to send simple request (Hello!) to Webservice
    5) Invoked webservice method call from the Client browser window
    6) Received success response back from webservice.
Then, I deployed same war files on Weblogic 9.2 (different machine on the network)
    - Both got deployed successfully and reached to ACTIVE state on Weblogic and became ready to accept requests.
    - When invoked Client application on the browser, it worked.
    - From that client application browser window, I tried to invoke webservice call, I got the exception as below:
    exception: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused: connect
I will greatly appreciate any advice on this. Let me know if more information is needed.
    Thanks in advance.

Each app server provides their own jndi factory class. For ex for weblogic it is weblogic.jndi.WLInitialContextFactory. SInce you are using sun app server, check if there are any examples to find out or the docs.
    private static String url="http://localhost:4848
Since the client is in a different machine the localhost is not going to work here. provide the url or the machine name of the system in which ur sunapp server is running. In addition u will need to have the stubs of the remote interfaces in ur client machine.

  • Load balancing 10g forms - Connection from new browser window not supported

Load balancing 10g forms - Connection from new browser window not supported
We're experimenting with using webcache to load balance between multiple applications servers running OC4J forms processes.
We currently have one machine with infrastructure and mid-tier (BI & Forms) installed, which is being used for the webcache functionality, this is load balancing between 2 other servers each of which just have the mid-tier (BI & Forms) installation
In order to get this to work, I had to follow the instructions in the Forms deployment guide : http://download-uk.oracle.com/docs/cd/B14099_11/web.1012/b14032/tuning.htm#sthref707
The main gist of this is that you need to set the following in the orion-web.xml file in order that the sessions are maintained:
    <session-tracking
    cookies="enabled">
    </session-tracking>
This all works fine in most cases.
The problem I am having is if I do one of the following on the client machine:
    1) From IE6 / IE7 run a copy of a forms application. Then open a new window using the "New Window" menu option, and attempt to run another forms application.
    2) In IE7 or Firefox 2.0 open a copy of the forms application, and then open a new tab and try and open another forms application.
If I try either of these I get a FRM-92101 error, and the following is displayed in the java console:
oracle.forms.net.ConnectionException: Connection from new browser window not supported
From trawling various forums (including metalink and otn) it looks like a problem with the way coockies are handled.
Unfortunately the usual workaround is to ensure that the session tracking option in the orion-web.xml file is disabled.
The problem is that I need this enabled in order for the load balancing to work.
Does anyone know of any other workarounds or patches that might help resolve this?
We're using Application server 10.1.2.0.2 running on windows 2003 servers.

You were right. Carriage returns were stopping it from working (the document is laid out over separate lines, so I assumed it would make no difference...).
I've now managed to get it so the forms at least run, but they are all being run in the forms OC4J instance on the same machine as the OHS.
Has anyone actually managed to get this to work, or am I doing something wrong?
I did wonder if using an OHS instance on a machine with no forms installation would make any difference?
I had raised a support call via metalink on this subject, but they eventually came to the conclusion that the only way to do this is with a hardware load balancer (Despite several documents suggesting that webcache is the way to go (including the forms deployment manual)).
I'm at the point now of giving up and writing some custom scripts to do the job instead...
