RMI Server as a service

I've have a very simple RMI Server that handles authentication for a Java Web Start app. This server app has been running as a standard console app and now I want to run it as a service on a Windows Server 2003 box.
I've tried Java Service Wrapper (http://wrapper.tanukisoftware.org/) and the built in tool in Windows for creating services (sc.exe) but no avail.
I'm becoming desperate and have begun peeking at full fledged application server such as JBoss and Suns application server. Those guys should be a total overkill since my tiny RMI server is as far away from J2EE as you can come.
Could someone provide me with some hints on this one? All I want is to have my server app run as a service, how hard should this be?

Did you find anything on this front? I also need develop an RMI server and deploy it as Service (on Windows) and Daemon on Java. And I particularly dont want to use the Java Service Wrapper as it is not a pure java solution. Please let me know if you found anything on this?

SQL Server and Reporting Services

What is the best practice for replicating the same reports for different clients using different databases in the same SQL Server and Reporting Services?
For example:
Create a single database for each client.
Create a single data source in Reporting services for each client.
Create a folder in Reporting Service for each client, and replicate all the report and point each report to its correct data source.
Is there an easier method for this type of solution.

According to your description, you have reports which has same structure for each user. Now you want to have a folder for each client to keep their reports. And each client should have a single database and single data source. Right?
In Reporting Service, if we need one data source to connect different database dynamically, we may need to use parameter and create dynamic connection string. However, in this scenario, since we need to have a single folder and data source for each
client, so we can just make copies of the whole project. Modify the Connection string in each data source, change the Initial Catalog to be the corresponding database for the client. This can be an easy way to meet the requirement.

I wanna know that can I use RMI server and client in a same program....My idea is like that I wanna use the same program for client and server....When I open my program, I can accept connection from other program and if I want to connect to others, I can also connect it. RMI Server and RMI Client Problem

First, Hi!
I have create my RMI Server and a RMI Servlet client.
I can run the server and servlet first time and it works fine.
Then, I stop rmiregistry and server.
Then, I start rmiregistry and server for a second time but my RMI Servlet client gets a
java.rmi.ConnectException: Connection refused to host: xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx; nested exception is: java.net.ConnectException: Connection refused
If I copy the class again where the servlets resides, it works again. But I have to keep doing that. I have to keep copying the class file to the servlet directory every 2nd time I try to run it for it to work.
Anyone know what am I doing wrong?

I have faced the same problem too. In my case if i just restart my Tomcat webserver the error goes and the servlet is very well able to connect back to the RMI Server
it works again. But I have to keep doing that. I have

Please check if you have started the Oracle BI Java host service.
Check if the OC4j is started.
Check the event viewer logs. Also check on what account the service is starting.

RMI server and client in one application - Exceptions during some calls

I wrote an application, which is an RMI-Server (Server1), and another separate application, which is an RMI-Client (Client1). Because I wont use dynamic class loading, I gave the client beside the interface.java also an interface_implementation.java, which is only a dummy of the original interface_implementation of the server. This dummy contains only declarations of the methods (parameters and return values) and no functional code. From this dummy the _stub.class is generated, and it works fine - no problem.
Now I want to modify Client1 to become also an RMI-Server (Server2) for a second, separate Client (Client2), the methods used are different from the first RMI connection. This Client2 uses a dummy of the implementation of Server2 in the same way as described above. The application Client1+Server2 only has to "translate" the calls from Client2 to Server2 into calls of Client1 to Server1 (Server1 is not changed at all). In case of primitive method parameters or return values this chain of RMI-applications works fine, but in case of more complex structures (my own classes) during the call of Client1 to Server1 an "ClassNotFoundException: access denied to class loader" occurs by running through the stub. Both stub.classes are found, all of the applications know the objects needed, the call of Client1 to Server1 is exactly the same call as it was during the simple version (only Server1 and Client1).
Does anybody know, why this exception occurs and how I can overcome this ?

I figured out a solution - it's a problem of policies. In detail: Server1's codebase entry (file:) refers to the class directory of Server1's project. In the simple case of only Client1, which has no codebase entry, it works fine without a file permission on the side of Server1. In the complex case of Client1+Server2, which has to have a codebase entry (file:) refering to the class directory of the Server2's project on a separate machine, for exactly the same method call from Client1 to Server1 a file permission entry on the side of Server1 is needed for Server1's class directory. But WHY ???
It seems to be a little confusing with the codebase entries, many of the posts are contrary to others and to my personal experiences. Some comments given by Adrian Colley throw a little light upon some aspects. Is there anybody, who can explain the whole topic, when, why, and which part of RMI application deals with codebase entries, also in case of not dynamic code downloading ? May be there is also a reference into the java docs, which I didn't found up to now.

I am a newbie to the Essbase. I am trying to figure out the diference between Server and Services.I am very confused.
Please clarify my understanding
Essbase Server - This is a server in which Essbase stores all the data.
Essbase Administration Services -This is a agent used to communicate to the Essbase Server from the front end ( Admin Console)
Admin Console - This is a front end client used to connect to different Essbase Servers. It is possible to have Essbase Servers to be installed on different machines.
Before connecting to client Admin console we should make sure Essbase SErver and Essbase Administration SErvices are up and running

it not necessary that Essbase server and EAS should be on the same machine.we can add differnt servers in EAS console.
As far as your last question(Before connecting to client Admin console we should make sure Essbase SErver and Essbase Administration SErvices are up and running)

RMI server and german umlaute

My rmi server does not show german umlaute after rebooting the linux box. It is started by a script in init.d/rc5. The script calls a C routine that really starts the server. The crazy thing is that if I remove the script from init.d/rc5 and call it manually after reboot everything is ok.

Sorry, I did not explain clearly, the server is the backend, the frontend is a swing application that is started by jnlp and communicates via rmi with the server. In the swing application there is a table filled with values coming from a database. In the database german umlaute are ok, in the swing frontend question marks and square boxes are shown after the linux box is rebooted.

Difference Between "Content Server" and "Content Services"

Can someone tell me the difference between "Oracle Content Server" and "Oracle Content Services"? From my research, I get the sense that
these are different products (and Oracle Content Services seems like it's an obsolete one), but I would like some confirmation.

Content Services is what you had with Content DB, Oracles old product.
Content Server is the core engine of the UCM product, formerly Stellent Content Server.

JAVA Stack for consuming and providing Services with ABAP?

I would like to know if I need to have a Java Stack when I want to build a Web Application with Web Dynpro Abap and consume Enterprise Services from the Enterprise Service Repository. Additional own created services in ABAP should be provided. Is a Java stack necessary for that? Or is an ABAP Stack enough?

Hi Ingmar,
You do not need a Java stack to build or run Web Dynpro ABAP application. Web Dynpro ABAP runs on ABAP stack.
Just to consume a web or enterprise service from Web Dynpro ABAP application, or any ABAP application for that matter, you do not need Java stack, either. NetWeaver Application Server contains a component called ICM (Internet Communication Manager) that enables the AS to play both as a service provider as well as a consumer.
The part about consuming Enterprise Services from the ES Repository is more complicated, though.
ES Repository is only a modeling tool. Services are actually implemented in the respective backend systems and then registered in central Services Registry. So, if the Enterprise Service you want to consume comes from an application that runs on Java stack, although I do not have any example of that handy, then obviously - Java stack is needed. This is irrelevant, however, if your question only pertains to the consumer part.

Error with VB, Ora ODBC 8.1.6, MS Tran Server and Ora services for MTS

I am getting VB error -2147168246 "Failed to enlist global transaction" from a VB middle tier component loaded in MS Tran Server. The VB error also mentions MS OLEDB Provider, however, I am using Ora ODBC 8.1.6, MS Tran Server 2.0, Ora Services for MTS (8.1.6) and Ora 8.1.6 for Win NT database. The VB middle tier component is marked as Requires Transaction. When the error occurs, the component has performed 3 SELECT's, a DELETE FROM, 3 more SELECT's, and then fails on a 4th SELECT. All of these activities are happening in this one VB component - it is not making calls to other components. Any ideas?

Thank you for your response. To answer your question, no, the SELECT statements do not involve any LOB's. With respect to the "Failed to enlist" error message, the dialog box mentions the Microsoft OLE DB Provider. We are using Oracle's 8.1.6 ODBC Driver and our connection string in VB 6.0 uses the DSN= syntax; we don't expicitly have the Provider= syntax in there. One of our many questions is: Given the above, is the Microsoft OLE DB Provider somehow being used, instead of Oracle's OLE DB Provider? We think not because we use Oracle Services for MTS and its trace file shows some transactions enlisted and completed, but this is a deduction - we don't really know what's happening behind the scenes. Another question we have is: When installing the Oracle 8.1.6 database on Win NT 4.0, there is a step where we must choose communication protocols. We have been selecting just TCP/IP. I read in OTN that Oracle Services for MTS talks to Microsoft's DTC using Named Pipes. We are now wondering if we should have included Named Pipes as a comm protocol when installing the DB.
