RMI server crashing the Virtual Machine

I am writing an enterprise RMI service at work and it has been crashing at seemingly random points and in-frequently. It is not actually crashing as such, because I have added a shutdown hook and that is getting called before it exits. I know for sure that it is not a system.exit() call because I have prevented all system.exit() calls in the security manager. I also have put in very tight memory management and an extended heap so I don't think its a memory issue either. Frequent calls to freeMemory() show that there is no memory leakage and that everything seems to be being cleaned up correctly.
I am using the IBM 1.3 virtual machine on a linux box for the server and thus the calls to the garbage collector are working nicely and when requested.
The crashing is happening at seemingly random points and I have covered all my public methods with try....catch blocks that catch Throwable, and it doesn't seem to be an exception. Code that 19 out of 20 times will run fine, crashes on the 20th run etc.
What I am wondering is - has anyone had similar problems and do you know how to fix it?
My other thought is that perhaps it is a problem with the IBM virtual machine, and I am thus going to try running things through the Sun 1.3 virtual machine to see if I get any different results.
Any insights or help from people developing similar services would be greatly appreciated (this is the first RMI service I have implemented).

YES!!! I finally solved it..........
I put the monitoring code into the startup script - incidentally, on linux the shell variable is $? as opposed to $status.
Then I let it run and this morning it exited again and the error code was 130 - or Control-C.... This made no sense to me as the service was running on a linux box which I was monitoring through a telnet window on my Windows PC. And I know for sure that I wasn't pressing Control-C.
After talking to someone else at work I found out that they had heaps of problems running a resin server in a similar way (through a telnet window), and in the end it came down to the telnet window was sending things it shouldn't to the resin server and causing all sorts of problems. As soon as they ran it in the background, the problems disappeared.
So I ran it in the background and the problem has disappeared. Instead, to monitor the service I just did a tail -f on the log file and every half hour or so the tail program running through the telnet window was just dying mysteriously...... ha ha ha ha
Thanks a lot for your help EJP, I wouldn't have been able to sort it out without your suggestions. And I have learnt a lot more about RMI in tracking this bug down. Only problem is that the clients were here for a demo last week and had it exit once while they were running the client app......arg!!!

  • Windows server 2008 r2 virtual machine uses much less memory then it has assigned

    Guys,
I had a virtual machine with windows 2008 r2 operating system, running sharepoint, on a server where it had 6gb RAM memory assigned.
Now I bought a new server, which has 32 gb of ram. I moved my virtual machine there, and assigned 24gb of RAM.
But after I started VM, in Windows Task Manager I see that system uses only about 6.5 GB of RAM assigned. That is not even close to 24gb, which it has available.
Is there any power shell script or anything else available to increase virtual machine memory usage?
    Thank you.

    Hi,
I found a KB similar described with your issue- the Hyper-V host cannot allocate more memory to the virtual machine because there is not enough free disk space to extend the
memory contents file, more detail symptoms please refer the following KB:

  • ODBC Problems with SQL Server 2012 on Virtual Machine

I am having problem with my application after my IT department upgraded to SQL Server 2012 with error "ConngetDataToModify.vi:1"<ERR>Object 0x2222222 is not valid.  I have 4 servers running the same executable without problem before the upgraded. However, after the upgrade 2 of these Server are having the problem with the ODBC connection. Here are my setup, the application was created using LabView8.5, we have 2 physical server box running Window Server 2003, 2 Virtual Machine on Windows Server 2008, and a Virtual Machine with SQL 2012 Server. The 2 physical server running the executable without a problem after the upgrade, but the 2 Virtual Server were unable to connects to the ODBC connection. Anyone have any idea why this is happening , it is the problem with compatibility between my application with Server 2008 and SQL 2012 Server, or is there a problem with both beings Virtual Servers? As I said, the 2 physical Server seem to be running without any problem with the upgrade.

My guess is that the problem is not specifically with LV. This should be relatively easy to check if you create a UDL file and double click it. This opens a Microsoft wizard which allows you to configure and test DB connections (the UDL file itself is basically just a text file which holds a connection string). If it doesn't work there, it won't work in LV.
As for what the actual problem is, a common culprit is the firewall, which is easy enough to check by disabling it. Another option is the surface area configuration of SQL Server, which will not allow network connections unless you tell it to.
It should probably also be noted that LV 8.5 is not officially supported on Windows Server. I'm assuming that's not the issue, but be aware of it.

  • Server 2012 cluster - virtual machine live migration does not work

    Hi,
We have a hyper-v cluster with two nodes running Windows Server 2012. All the configurations are identical.
When I try to make a Live migration from one node to the other I get an error message saying:
Live migration of 'Virtual Machine XXXXXX' failed.
I get no other error messages, not even in event viewer. This same happens with all of our virtual machines.
A normal Quick migration works just fine for all of the virtual machines, so network configuration should not be an issue.
The above error message does not provide much information.

    Hi,
Please check whether your configuration meet live migration requirement:
Two (or more) servers running Hyper-V that:
    Support hardware virtualization.
    Yes they support virtualization.
Are using processors from the same manufacturer (for example, all AMD or all Intel).
Both Servers are identical and brand new Fujitsu-Siemens RX300S7 with the same kind of processor (Xeon E5-2620).
Belong to either the same Active Directory domain, or to domains that trust each other.
Both nodes are in the same domain.
Virtual machines must be configured to use virtual hard disks or virtual Fibre Channel disks (no physical disks).
All of the vitual machines have virtual hard disks.
Use of a private network is recommended for live migration network traffic.
Have tried this, but does not help.
Requirements for live migration in a cluster:
Windows Failover Clustering is enabled and configured.
    Yes
Cluster Shared Volume (CSV) storage in the cluster is enabled.
    Yes
Requirements for live migration using shared storage:
All files that comprise a virtual machine (for example, virtual hard disks, snapshots, and configuration) are stored on an SMB share. They are all on the same CSV
Permissions on the SMB share have been configured to grant access to the computer accounts of all servers running Hyper-V.
Requirements for live migration with no shared infrastructure:
    No extra requirements exist.
Also please refer to this article to check whether you have finished all preparation works for live migration:

  • Hyper-V on Windows 8.1 64 bit, "Could not send keys to the virtual machine"

    Hi,
I newly installed Windows 8.1 (not an upgrade, fresh install from corporate network) on a Dell Precision T7600 workstation and enabled the Hyper-V feature with the matching management. I created a couple of 2 GB RAM, 2 virtual CPUs VMs and am trying to install
Windows Server 2k8R2 and 2k12 on them. After a network boot, during the first couple dialog boxes for Windows setup, I am unable to use the keyboard. When I try to boot from an ISO, the VM get stuck on a black screen "Starting Windows". In either
case if I use the VM connection window menu to paste from clipboard or send ctrl+alt+del, I get the error:
    Virtual Machine Connection
Could not send keys to the virtual machine.
Interacting with the virtual machine's keyboard device failed.
I search online for this error and did not find others experiencing it.
I tried to shutdown and reset both VMs, I stopped and restarted the Hyper-V service. Neither helped. I am not sure what other step I can take at this point.
Also, I configured a virtual switch as external network on one of the two Intel network adapters. Both connect to a gigabit switch. "Allow management operating system to share this network adapter" is checked. Both VMs are on the same virtual switch.

    Hi,
Can you find any information in event log about this issue?
Based on my research, it seems that the Dll file related to Hyper-v was corrupted.
I suggest you try using the following command to repair your system.
1.Open an elevated command prompt: press Win+X, then click Command Prompt(Admin),and press Enter.
2.At the command prompt, type the following command, and then press ENTER:
    Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

  • 'SERVERNAME' failed to perform the operation. The virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation. (Virtual machine ID "GUID")

    DPM 2012 R2
Server 2012 R2 and Server 2012 (R1). Both CSV volumes and Hyper-V hosts with non clustered volumes.

Every time a VM backup is made this error message occurs:
"'SERVERNAME' failed to perform the operation. The virtual machine is not in a valid state to perform the operation. (Virtual machine ID "GUID")"
The backup seems to finish fine most of the time, but it also seems to be causing some VM's to be in a hung/frozen state when this happens.

    Hi Nordland,
So it seems that there are some non-backup operation that is trying to occur on the Virtual machine while the backup is in progress. Does this VM have replication enabled on it. Is there a Hyper-V replica server to which this machine get's replicated?

    Activate the virtual machine
I know that 2012 can be a self-activation technology, activate the virtual machine hyperv inside,

    2008 r2 installed operating system,
Is there any way I can be free to activate the system virtual machine do? ? ?
In addition, I have heard, 2012R2 can activate three free virtual machine, but I currently do not know what to do.
    Host Installation: 2012R2 add hyperV Role Genuine serial numbers have been used to activate over;
    hyperV: mounting system is 2008R2 systems;
The question is: how to activate inside 2008R2 system? ?

    Hi 中子112,
If you installed Windows Server 2012 R2 Datacenter, Datacenter enables an unlimited number of VMs on the licensed host server.
And there is a new function is AVMA on server 2012 r2, AVMA lets you install virtual machines on a properly activated Windows server without having to manage product keys for each individual virtual machine, even in disconnected environments.
To activate VMs with AVMA, please follow these articles:
    Automatic Virtual Machine Activation

  • An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine (0x80070050)

I was exporting several VM's from a Vhost so that i could import them into a new cluster. Four out of the five machines went off with no hitch and were exported and then imported.  However one of the machines throws up an error durring the export
"An error occurred while attempting to export the virtual machine.
Filed to copy file during export.
Failed to copy file from 'D:\path\of\vhd\VM.vhd to 'D:\path\of\export\VM.vhd': The file esists (0x80070050)"

I have found an answer to my own question after
further investigation  … In hopes of helping anyone who may have a similar problem in the future....
What happened was the server has two VHD’s one is located in C:\vm\vhd\server.vhd the second was located in a different directory such as C:\vm\vhd1\server.vhd
as both vhd files were named identically when the export was attempted it tried to move both files into the same directory I assume giving the “file already exists error”.

    Hi All,
I have installed windows server 2012 R2 RTM with Hyper-V. I have created virtual machine with virtual fiber channel adapter connected to physical one. When I start the virtual machine it gets failed to start and the following error occurs.
    Thanks,

    take a lool on that

I guess also that some Part of the Chain do not Support all needed Settings like NPIV.
dealing with vFC inside a Guest ist really tricky and following Support Matrix is really key, it starts on the FCP SAN Array and Ends up having the latest Hotfixes regarding vFC Problems. Between you need to have all Setup right and supported Drivers,
    FW and so on.
In my view using this Feature you loss the my most Importent Sexy Thing why i do Virtualisation ? beeing seperate from the HW Layer.

No entry is made on the cluster log of the destination node.
To me this means the nodes cannot talk to each other, but I don’t know why.
They are on the same domain.  Their server names resolve properly and they can ping eachother both by name and IP.

  • Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine

    Hello,
When implementing a VDI solution, I'm getting an error on our virtualization host server.  The error is:
Remote Desktop Virtualization Host failed to get redirection authentication information from the virtual machine [VDI-PC].
    Hresult 0x8000FFFF
Event ID 8467, Severity: Warning, Source: Microsoft-Windows-TerminalServices\TSV\VmHostAgent
This error happens every time a user or admin connects to a VDI desktop.  This is a fresh install of Remote Desktop Services on completely fresh servers.  This is in testing and we have not ever had it working before without the error.
    Topolgy: Server2012 R2, Windows 7
Srv-RDCB1: Is the connection broker and Web Access server.  It is Virtualized thru Hyper=V.
Srv-RDVH1: Is the virtualization host.  It is a physical server. It also has a separated hyper-v role (for RDS VDI deployment).
Everything seems to be functional other than this error in the log, and I haven't found any information on what this could mean.
Any help is greatly appreciated, thanks!

In RD Gateway Manager, right-click on the RD RAP and click Properties.  On Network Resources tab select
“Allow users to connect to any network resource”.
