Robohelp 10 locking up!

Robohelp 10 locks up when trying to convert to kindle.  Any suggestions on the reason and anyone have the fix?
Thank you!  Gary

Take a look at the information in the Employee Care sample project that ships with Rh10. There is some information in one of the topics and you can compare your layout with the one there.
Try with a very simple text only topics as well.
See if that helps and post back with the outcome.

  • RoboHelp 7 HTML - Captivate Integration

    Hello,
I have a problem importing captivate projects into my
RoboHelp 7 HTML projects. When I publish used to be able to import
the [captivate project]_skin.swf and it would import all relevant
swf files into the help files. When I attempt to do this now,
    RoboHelp locks up.
I thought that it might just be taking a bit longer than
normal, so I let it sit, and sit, and sit. About 3 hours later I
decided to Ctrl + Alt + Del it to get it to stop. Of course, no
    captivate files were brought in.
So, I tried to just import the pertinent .swf file so I could
at least get the files in there. Well, I got the files in and
working, at least in the previews they are. When I attempt to
output the .chm file or a Flash Help Pro, only one of the videos
works properly. The rest start with the Adobe Captivate progress
    bar, then stop.
I am currently using RoboHelp 7.0.2.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi there Andrew
One thing that always bites me in the heels when I'm doing
this is that the project should not still be open in Captivate.
RoboHelp seems to hang until I close the project in Captivate.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Trouble displaying Windows Explorer file select dialog in RH8

This problem is occurring across RH8: when I select Import Word doc at startup; when I select Baggage File -> New; when I select Insert Image-> Browse . RoboHelp locks up and when I select to End Task in the Windows Task Manager I get a message saying "the system can not end this program because it is waiting for a response from you". I've tried cascading windows to see if the dialog box is hidden but it's just not there.

Is your RH project located on a network drive (very bad) or a local drive (good). Also is this just on one project? What happens when you try to do the same on one of the supplied demo projects?
    Read the RoboColum(n).

  • RoboHelp Providing the Locking with TFS

I am doing a test with RoboHelp 7 using TFS as version control. I know that you can make TFS lock files so that you cannot have multiple authors check them out at the same time.
My problem however is that the source files for RoboHelp are in the same project as our developer's code. This means that if we change the TFS to have an exclusive lock then the developers would have to also have an exclusive lock on their files which they do not want.
Is there a way that RoboHelp can lock the files when checking them out?
    Thanks,
    Emma

I'm looking for a solution but my problem is slightly different. I'm running Visual Studio 2012 (update 4) and RH10.  When I installed the 32 bit MSSCCI Provider, the TFS option became available (the 64 bit provider was ignored).  Now I get an error on check-in citing "Trouble with TFS power tools".  The details says there was an "Error loading the Changeset Comments Policy policy".  I have tried installing both the 2010 and 2012 TFS Power Tools (combinations of one, the other, both) but still get the same error.
    Thanks!

  • RoboHelp 8 hangs, locks up, when rearranging / adding folder in Project Manager

    'Afternoon everyone,
I'm working on a client's project that has 329 topics; I have imported it from RH5 into RH8 HTML.
In Project Manager, the project files are arranged into about 20 folders. I wanted to rearranging the order of these by drag and drop.
This worked OK for the first two moves; but the third move made RH hang; it locked up. After waiting 15 minutes, I used Ctrl+Alt+Del to shut it down.
Opened it again. I tried to add a new folder into the Project Files folder, but it hangs / locks up again. Can't do anything except crash out of it and try again. Then I get the same problem again - it hangs when I try to add a new folder.
The project files only take 26Mb on disk, but in Task Manager, RoboHelp is running at 45% CPU, 114 Mb Mem Usage, on a fairly high-spec PC. And there it hangs.
    Any ideas, anyone?

    Now what?!!  Cannot edit topics!
When I created the new Help Project in a new folder, I used Create New Blank Project. It creates a new topic. But I couldn't open it to edit it.
OK, try importing files from the 'old' project. It tooka while; BUT - in the new imported rebuild, when I try to open any topic file, I get the same message,
"The file {path}{filename}.htm is associated with a 3rd party editor and may be open in the editor. If so, please close the file in the other application before continuing." (It wasn't open in anything).
When I click OK, it then opens RoboHelp Explorer, and then displays a RoboHelp for Word dialogue telling me:
"This file is not an HPJ file. Please select an HPJ file to open."
I clicked OK and got a RoboHelp for Word message telling me "The file cannot be edited. Make sure the file exists and it is accessible."
Looking in Windows Explorer at the new folder, there is indeed no HPJ file.
Also: when importing the 329 topics, I got a few "cannot copy file" errors for whmsg.js, whver.js, whproxy.js, whutils.js, whtopic.js. I found these in an original backup copy of the project and copied these across. Closed the project, reopened it; But I still cannot edit topics.
(I have also imported Index, Glossary and ToC files.)
Never seen this problem before. I've spent hours trying to sort this out.
    Now what? HELP!!

  • Unable to open a project in RoboHelp 9

Till last week my RoboHelp 9 copy was working fine. From yesterday, "Open" dialog box is not showing up. If I click Open icon it will hang. Please help!!

    Hello again
    I'm pleased it worked!
When applications appear to "lock up" when you expect to see a dialog, it's a fair guess that the dialog is actually appearing somewhere, but may be in a screen position that is not "viewable". This can happen if perhaps you had the screen set to a really super high resolution, then switched it to a lower resolution. But most commonly it happens when you have been working with a second monitor connected and at some point the second monitor is no longer there. Perhaps in a situation where you have a laptop in a docking station at the workplace, but you disconnect and take the laptop home.
However, I've been using RoboHelp for 20+ years. And over the years I'm aware of one particularly elusive bug with the preview. And in that bug, when it happens, the screen coordinates for the preview window sometimes inexplicably get written where if you had a monitor large enough, the preview would actually appear about ten miles or more away.
Fortunately, the Windows+Left Arrow trick seems to work.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Adding swf (Captivate clips) into RoboHelp: flash controls don't work

    Hi all,
I've added captivate swf project and ALL the flash controls (toc, play etc) don't work, though it plays continuously from the beginning. If I extract that page HTML code and play it separately, it works on all browsers. I render RoboHelp projects as MS HTML Help.
Are there any known issues with rendering flash clips in Microsoft HTML Help? it looks as it is using some weird embedded browser for swf.
    any suggestions?
    thanks

    Hi again
Okay, this gets curiouser and curioser the more I look at it.
At first blush it appeared things were working. Then I tried the playback controls. Odd, the controls will allow a single click and they will carry out whatever function you clicked. But that seems to be it. Further clicks appear to be disallowed. I tested with a fresh Captivate movie as well as one that uses the Domain Lock Widget.
Wondering if this was an overall issue with SWF content in general or if it was simply tied to the Playback Controls, I then tried adding some button objects to each slide to allow the user to navigate from slide to slide. This seems to work.
I thought (hoped actually) that perhaps it was simply the default playback controls causing the issue. Unfortunately it doesn't seem to be. I tried creating a SWF using the Aluminum controls. Same issue.
At this point I have to admit that I'm more than a little stumped. I'm surprised that I've not heard of this before or that others haven't reported it. However, I use Captivate files in my CHM files all the time. The main difference is that I never use playback controls in my movies. I am always using either Buttons or Click Boxes to navigate.
So being generally unsatisfied and poking it further, I seem to have found the culprit. I did the same thing in RoboHelp 7 and there wasn't an issue. What was different? I scrutinized the code and there was no difference. Hmmm
Then it hit me. The difference here was that where the Captivate playback control only functioned after the first click, the RoboHelp project was using Browse Sequences. So I edited the window definition and turned them off. BINGO! The Captivate works fine now.
I also tested using RoboHelp 7. Same issue there as well.
Definitely this should be reported to Adobe as a bug. Link is in my sig.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Is RoboHelp Server the solution for us?

    Hi all,
I'm trying to figure out whether RH Server is the solution for us. I've seen a few similar posts in the forums, but none that really answer my specific questions. I'm hoping for feedback from someone with experience in RH Server, who is perhaps in a similar situation to us.
We are a software development company, creating desktop software for PCs. We have three main applications, and approximately 20,000 users. I am the company's (only) Tech Writer.
Currently I provide documentation (user guides) to our clients in the form of the good ol' CHM file. I develop these in RH8. Each of our applications is bundled with an installed CHM file which users access by pressing F1. I'm sure you're all familiar with this process. Our users run our software on their own systems, completely independent of us - there's no connection to us whatsoever. However, they all have Internet access, as it's a requirement for them to be able to use certain functionality within our applications. Hold that thought.
I also write Knowledge Base Articles in MS Word, as PDFs, which users access via our web site. Internal to our organisation, I provide KBAs and other such material for our Technical Support staff. These aren't available/accessible to the public. I write these in Word because they need to be sent around to a team of reviewers from time-to-time, and whilstI'm the only person with RH installed, everyone has Word.
What I'm hoping to achieve with RH Server is this:
Do away with the old CHM files that our users have. They're just awful. I'm hoping that in future, when our users press F1 from within our applications, they will be taken to a corresponding page on a web site or AIR page similar to what the Adobe Help looks like when we access it from RoboHelp. Forgive my ignorance if I've used incorrect terminology. That way they'll always be reading the latest Help content, live, online, instead of what I wrote last time we sent a product update out. I imagine our programmers will have to edit the functionality behind the action of our users pressing F1 in our applications. Has anyone done this? Are there any issues we should be aware of? What happens if our users don't currently have Internet access, for example - is it possible to call a local version of the Help instead, if this is detected? Has anyone done this with a similar number of users to us? We could well have 100s of users trying to access the system simultaneously.
Gather feedback from users. From what I understand, we'll be able to use RH Server to see which Help topic/content is being viewed, and also receive feedback from users. Can anyone give me feedback on their experiences with this? Any tips/hints/issues I need to be aware of? Is it possible for us to determine which users accessed which content? Remember, the idea is that users should be able to access this content by pressing F1 - I don't want them to have to sign in every time they need to access our Help system - it should be seamless to them. So, I'm wondering how it would be possible to track user usage without making them sign in. This is important to us because some of our content is region-specific, and it would be handy to know if users from those regions are actually accessing the Help content that relates to them.
Host our internal documentation on the same server as our public documentation. Is it possible to host all of our internal, private documentation on the same RH Server, making it available to our Tech Support team (and other internal teams) only? I imagine we could do this by password-protecting it, but I want to ensure that the public don't even know it exists. ...and our Tech Support people would not be impressed with having to sign in every time they wanted to access their Knowledge Base. Any tips here regarding locking down / restricting access to content?
    A quick note about collaboration:
Currently, although the Help menus are developed in RH, the KBAs and other PDF documents are written in MS Word. I send them around to a team of reviewers who add their comments/edits and send them back to me. From what I understand, this is something I can do with RH10 - export PDFs and send them around for review, combining the results later, at which time I give them a final review before publishing. Have I understood this correctly? Does RH Server play a part in this process? Can I use RH Server's feedback capabilities as a mechanism for my review team to make edits/comments? I guess I'm trying to get an understanding of how sophisticated the RH Server feedback system is. If I can use RH Server to have the team read/review documents, it'll save me having to manage a bunch of Word documents that I email them. It'll also minimise the chance that a redundant document gets distributed by mistake - something that can occur because people use their locally-saved documents I emailed them earlier, instead of the finals.
    Thank you.

    Hi, symmetricalMan
Let's see if I can tackle some of these "inline". There are a lot of moving parts to your system (you're a busy guy!)
I only have time for a few of these. Perhaps Colum McAndrew and others will chime it with their experiences.
    >>they will be taken to a corresponding page on a web site or AIR page similar to what the Adobe Help looks like when we access it from RoboHelp.
It would be WebHelp Pro in the scenario you mention (not AIR Help).
By "taken to a corresponding page" you are referring to Context Sensitive Help which RoboHelp Server does support (including your F1 scenario).
    >>What happens if our users don't currently have Internet access, for example - is it possible to call a local version of the Help instead, if this is detected?
Hmm. You could either package a plain WebHelp (not Pro) output and distribute for access on a share drive. The detection thing would be up to your developers. Come to think of it, AIR Help does have a potential alternative here which might be worth looking into. Obviously, there would be two systems to maintain. I'm not up to date on it, but you'll find info here in the online help: http://help.adobe.com/en_US/robohelp/robohtml/WS81F63111-6ACF-4a02-B2B2-461FEBFA8093.html
    >>.we'll be able to use RH Server to see which Help topic/content is being viewed, and also receive feedback from users.
Actually, the "feedback" is anonymous (no names are collected.) You can however, create "Areas" and analyze the traffic on topics according to sub-sets of your users.
The feedback is not direct from the users. In other words, RoboHelp Server (at least for now) does not support Commenting (as AIR Help does). So Feedback Reports are derived from the end-users "surfing" your site and collecting their search terms verbatim to get an idea of what they are searching for in order to improve your content.
    >>So, I'm wondering how it would be possible to track user usage without making them sign in.
RH Server Sites do not have to be "Protected" by authentication. It is your choice. You can have some sites (called Areas) that are authenticated and some sites that are not authenticated, all on the same RH Server. RoboHelp Server uses a database and can authenticate users (by setting up protected "Areas".) However, my networking knowledge is limited and you would have to ask someone else about "persistent logins" etc.
    >>content is region-specific, and it would be handy to know if users from those regions are actually accessing the Help content that relates to them.
Yes, you can do this. This is where RoboHelp Server can be used to create "Areas" for different content to be delivered to different audiences.
    >>Is it possible to host all of our internal, private documentation on the same RH Server,
Yes you can. However the Tech Support sign in scenario question would have to be answered by someone else. It's hard to know from where I sit.
    >>RH10 - export PDFs and send them around for review, combining the results later, at which time I give them a final review before publishing
Yes, this workflow would seem to work for you. However, RoboHelp Server plays no role in this review one way or the other. There are many alternatives for sharing the PDF which is described in the documentation.

  • Problem with RoboHelp 6 (new purchase)

    Hi all,
Well I have just purchased the latest version of RoboHelp 6
and I opened my previous project (from RoboHelp X3) in the new RH.
I managed to have everything working and everything was good for
about a week (including command-line compilation and batch
generates). However now when I open my project RH stalls. Sometimes
it manages to open the project but I can never edit it. I don't
believe this issue to have anything to do with my machine's specs
and I am running RH on the local machine (where I have admin
rights) as opposed to the network. I am a bit confused by this
behaviour. Maybe I need a patch or something but I am unsure as to
    where to find one.
Thanks in advance for any advice on this issue,
    darkagn

I was having a similar problem this morning with RoboHelp 6.
My project would open, but would immediatly lock up if I tried to
do anything. I removed the KB927891 Microsoft update that I had
just installed, restarted, and everything works fine now. (I got
this idea because it was the only change I had made to my system
and because Microsoft updates have caused problems with RoboHelp in
the past.) The notes on the Microsoft website indicate that this
fix is part one of a two-part solution, so I'm going to wait until
the second part is posted in June and try the update again. It
could be a fluke that this worked, but thought I would pass the
    information along.

  • RoboHelp 9 file extensions

I have done some searching in the forums and in the Online Help and cannot find the list of file extensions and what they mean in RoboHelp. Can anyone tell me where (or if) this list exists?
I'll bet you are wondering why I need them, right?
Okay, well my company is currently converting all of our applicatoins from VB6 to DotNet.  We have a huge application that is being converted in pieces over the following year.  Using our Subversion repository, I have created a complete copy of the project in which to work.  At the same time, we are changing the online help from .chm to WebHelp.  My problem is that as the conversion takes place, they are also making changes to the original VB6 project which will need updates in in online help.  So, I need to make the changes to the VB6 project in the DotNet project and merget only those topics (using Subversion) to the original VB6 online help project.  I need to know which files to bring along with the updated or newly created topic. Make sense?
Thanks in advance for any help you provide!

  • LOCKED - Troubles with RH's transform of FM figure titles/tbl captions' formats... Same problem?

    Source agent:  FM 9.0p250, unstructured
    Transformative agent:  RH 8.0.2.208
    OS:  WinXP Pro V. 2002 SP3
    CPU:  Core2 Quad @ 2.4 GHz
    RAM:  3.25 GB
    Free Space:  12.6 GB
    File Sys.:  NTFS
    Swap: D & E (system-managed)
Is anyone else experiencing problems with RH not correctly transforming FM figure and table titles? I can get most of my design to work, but I am having a problem with RH not following-through with some of my table title format and figure title format specifications.
I am having problems with RH not correctly applying, or inconsistently applying, figure title and table caption attributes ("Paragraph" settings) that I specify through Project Settings | Import | Edit | Conversion Settings.
For example (in FM Table Designer), I have a table title paragraph design, "TT.Table Title", in which I specify Title > Above Table, and specify a paragraph design (FM style) of Arial, 10pt, regular, bold, 0" indents, alignment left. It works fine direct to print or PDF; the same is true with figure titles.
In RH (through Project Settings | Import > Edit | Conversion Settings [FrameMaker Settings] > Paragraph), I specify that the FM style is to transform through an RH style that I define (through Edit Style button > Styles > Format > Paragraph). I set the alignment, etc., as is required through RH, but when I look at the Design view and/or generate the output (say...Webhelp), RH has not correctly interpreted one or more of my specification's attributes.
For example, in the case of my table titles, in Design view, RH has centered the title (or in RH terms, the ''Caption") above the table. Or sometimes the bold attribute is missing. In Project Manager, if I right-click and select View, the title/caption sometimes appears as specified; however, if I Generate the WebHelp (or HTML Help, or whatever), the bold formatting isn't there.
I thought that maybe RH defaulted figure and table titles to a Caption, as that is what it calls that part in the Design view. But when I set Caption to my specs, it made no difference.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in advance!

Please don't post the same question in two categories as apart from being against the forum rules it results in messy answers. Some in one category and some in another.

  • Problem displaying WebHelp built from RoboHelp HTML Editiion

I have a project I want to transition out of RoboHelp for
Word but when I build the files in RoboHTML in my extremely locked
down environment (I work on a secure network) I get errors when I
try to display the WebHelp that does not occur with my RoboHelp for
    Word build.
The errors appear to relate to pathing problems for the
Contents, Index, and Find. All three selections give me Line 728,
Char 3, Error Object Expected, Code 0, URL ends in whtdhtml.htm. As
I click on other items in the Contents I get the same error. I get
the same error when I try to open a book. After a book opens the
TOC freezes after getting Error:84 Unspecified Error. I cannot
close any books after getting the Error: 84. Clicking on a page
    displays the page fine.
Nothing displays in the Index. Typing in the Index text box
gives me Line 1096, Char 3, Error faFakes[…].nB’ is
null or not an object, Code 0, URL ends in whibody.htm. If I come
back to to the Index after clicking elsewhere, nothing still
displays but I do not get the error, however, I still cannot find
    anything.
When I type something in Search, it appears to return results
normally, but when I try to access a result I get Line 619, Char 2,
Object Expected, Code 0, URL of the file I am trying to access.
Has anyone ever seen anything like this? It has to be in my
locked down XP setup that affects the build from RoboHTML, possibly
screwing up the XML files or if something is actually written into
the JS files, messing with them. Someone suggested our environment
may have put something in an unfamiliar place and the build gets
munged. It has to be the build process since WebHelp works fine
when created from RoboHelp for Word.

Check with IT. If you are using RH6 or lower, then they must
be installed with and run with your login and that must have admin
rights attached. If you are using RH7, an administrator can install
it and you don't need admin rights to use it.
See Installing RH on my site.
That seems the most likely cause given that this occurs with
    the sample projects.

  • Robohelp Crashes After Launching Other Programs, Especially Quickbooks

We are experienced multiple Robohelp issues on multiple machines.  I appreciate this forums patience as we work through these issues.  Support has been useless.  Anyway, when we have a project open in Robohelp 9 and we launch other programs it will normally lock up Robohelp.  This doesn't happen every time, but at least 50% approx.  We've noticed this is particulary true with running Quickbooks after opening Robohelp 9.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Also, are there any known issues with Windows 7 64bit and Robohelp? One of our PCs is running Windows 7 now but all the others are still xp 32 bit.

    In addition to Jeff's comments...
Are you copying down by using copy and paste? If so zip on the server and copy the zip file.
In your first post in this thread you say "Also, are there any known issues with Windows 7 64bit and Robohelp?" Please see the Sticky Topic "Before You Post" where it is requested that all threads start with the version of RoboHelp used. Both 8 (patched) and 9 should work fine but there may be problems with earlier versions.

  • Forced to close RoboHelp after generating SSLs in order to edit content

I have reported this as a bug, but wonder whether any of you have had similar experiences and, if so, how you resolved it.
Have to close RoboHelp after generating SSLs in order to edit content
    Steps to reproduce bug:
Open project from Visual Studio Source Control (Team Foundation Server).
Select a Single Source Layout and generate the output.
Try to edit a topic. The Check Out dialog box says "To modify this document, the files in the list below need to be checked out from version control. Do you want to check out these files."
    Click Yes.
    Results:
The Cannot Complete Operation dialog box appears. "The files in the list below could not be checked out from version control. Exclusive access to these files is required to modify this document."
Click Close, close RoboHelp, and restart RoboHelp.
    Expected results:
The files should be checked out from version control with exclusive access when I click Yes to check them out.
When I look in Source Control Explorer, the file I tried to check out is not even checked out. Even manually locking the file for edit from Source Control does not free the file for editing in RoboHelp.
    Thanks.
    Carol

As for this particular site, if you want to spend some time research it, you could install an add-on such as Firebug or the external Fiddler2 proxy. Both will show you each request made by the browser when you load a page. Then you can see which third party sites are involved and if you like make a specific entry to allow them in the Exceptions dialog.

    * http://www.fiddler2.com/fiddler2/ (more difficult to use for HTTPS sessions)

  • Robohelp 9 WebHelp - Searching doesn't produce any results.

Hi, I upgraded to RoboHelp 9 last week and now searching in Webhelp doesn't produce any results. I've created a new project, used the sample project, tried generating it to a new folder and results remain the same.
    When I select the search tab, the status bar flutters with the "Waiting for file...." displayed indefinetly with the occassion display of the javascript: (void);
Screens shots are from the RH 9 sample project. Results are the same with my projects.  CHMs generated work fine!
    Any suggestions?

    Mary
You added the problem to another thread that was not related as the issue there is the use of HTTPS. I have deleted that post.
You also started a second thread with a the same question. I don't understand how asking the question twice will help so I have locked that thread but created a link to this thread so that anyone with an answer can help you. If there is a reason for starting a second thread, please let me know.
Please just ask once and wait for a reply as this wastes moderator's time that is better used trying to answer questions.
Now to the problem. Searching with Chrome installed works just fine for most people so the problem seems to be local to you. If I have read you correctly, after installing Chrome, the search breaks no matter what browser is used.
Was that checked on other machines or just yours?
IGNORE THIS QUESTION - The answer is YES and that was in the post.
Did you also check that search was broken with the supplied sample projects? I know that works with the three browsers being discussed here?
Where was the help installed when tested by you both standalone and from the application?
Questions 2 and 3 are really only related to problems with Chrome. I have not seen anyone report Chrome also breaking the search in the other browsers. There's more to this than meets the eye as Chrome has not caused that problem for anyone else, or at least, no one has reported it.
