Root mail not using aliases

I have set up /etc/aliases which is a link to /etc/mail/aliases with the following alias:
root: <my-email-address>
I then ran newaliases successfully
when I run /usr/lib/sendmail -bv root
I get a successful translation
However when I send mail to root I don't get the mail. Mail does work on this server as I am able to send mail to <my-email-address> directly. Any ideas why I can't get root to send its mail to my email address? Thanks to all

I agree this can be annoying. But sometimes it's difficult to fix because it could be on the Server end vs a Keychain issue. You could go to Keychain and do a few things.
1) First, in Keychain, make sure your Keychain password is correct.
2) Close Mail. Delete the Keychain item associated with your mail password for the account you're having trouble with.
3) Open Mail, you'll be prompted for your passwork: select to save in Keychain
Keychain is Located in .../Applications/Utilities/Keychain Access.  Below is an example of the Keychain

  • Sendmail not using aliases.db file

I am using Sendmail 8.13.7. I just installed solaris 10 on a new sun server. I have created an /etc/aliases file. I have performed a "newaliases."
The aliases are not working. I get "User unknown." I have verified that aliases.db is there and that there are no errors upon creation. I have double/triple checked for spelling issues, etc. Sendmail simply is ignoring the aliases.
Any thoughts? Any extra info one may need in order to help out? Thanks!

The alias file location should be /etc/mail/aliases not /etc/aliases
Normally /etc/aliases is a symlink to it, but its possible that its become a separate file..
So check if your edits have shown up in /etc/mail/aliases

  • Mail not using the correct account to reply to email

I use Gmail to fetch email from my other email accounts. Prior to Mountain Lion, whenever I replied to an email, Mail would use the correct email account to reply to. That is to say, Gmail was fetching email from [email protected], for example. When I click reply, the default account would be mail.com. But since upgrading to Mountain Lion, the default account will be Gmail.com.
Has anyone experienced this? How were you able to solve this, if at all?
Thanks in advance for your responses.

The new rule seems to be if you move an email message received on account A to a folder belonging to account B, that means the message now "belongs to" account B, and replies will come from account B. The new rule is murkier if you move a message from account A to an "On My Mac" folder and then reply to it.
I'm not saying that I like it that way, or that Apple has documented the change, just that this "new rule" seems to explain many of the "wrong reply" and "copying myself" complaints we see here on the forums. If we (users) can figure out the second half of the "new rule" ("On My Mac" folders), we might be able to explain the rest, we might be able to predict how replies will work, and we might be able to write a cogent complaint about the "new rule."

  • Issue with Mail not using rich text

I'm using the Mail app on snow leopard and I can't seem to utilize the rich text functionality within the program. It is set to "Rich Text" via Preferences -> Composing but all my emails come in as plain text ("Content-Type: text/plain; charset="us-ascii").
Can someone help me with this?

So why does it have a default option to send as rich text then? Am I missing something?
"Rich Text" doesn't really mean anything unless you select the font size, font face, color, etc. As you can see, there is no place to do that in the Composing preferences. You have to do that in the New Message pane, or there isn't anything "rich" to send. Mail's Font preferences apply to local display, not to composing.
Mail has always behaved this way and the issue has been discussed dozens of times in these forums, because many people working in the Windows world want to have all their email sent out in rich text with a certain font and size by default. Mail lacks this feature, and there is no sign it will change, so some people switch to Entourage or Thunderbird.
A possible workaround in Mail is to use an html signature and start your message in the first line of that. Or use stationery.

  • Mail not using my Address Book on new iMac 10.6.2 - not autofilling ...

I have recently switched to a new iMac with a fresh install of 10.6.2.
My Apple Mail app is not grabbing address book contacts automatically even though I have checked the box to auto-complete addresses. This always used to work on my old machine.
Any ideas why this might be happening ? Should I delete the preference file to rebuild it ? Is there a setting I'm not aware of somewhere else ?
    Thanks,
    Ed

These instructions are for 10.8. In 10.7, the application is called "Address Book."
    Back up all data.
    In Contacts, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Contacts Archive
from the menu bar, and save the archive to your Desktop.
If you use iCloud, disable contact synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. When prompted, click Delete From Mac. Re-enable synchronization. Wait for the contacts to re-synchronize, then test.
If you don't use iCloud, or if the contacts fail to synchronize, delete all contacts, then select
    File ▹ Import…
and import the archive you created. It may take a few seconds for the contacts to be indexed. Test.
If you don't like the results of this procedure, quit the application. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Restore the folder that opens from the backup you made before you started.

  • Lion Applescript to send mail (not using Mail.app) broken

I have been using an applescript to transfer files across a network and then send an email when the files have transferred. I am testing Lion on one machine and my script (which worked in Snow Leopard) fails on the email part. (The files copy okay)
    here is the segment:
    --> send email
              set authstuff to {"auto", "plain", "login", "crammd5", "anonymous", "cramsha1"}
set s to "on run {fromx, theAddresses, emailsubject, filelist, smtpServer, puerto"
if emailauth is not "none" then set s to s & ",user, pwd"
              set s to s & "}" & return & ¬
"send mail to theAddresses from fromx SMTP server smtpServer port puerto subject emailsubject body filelist"
if emailauth is not "none" then set s to s & " username user password pwd authentication " & emailauth
if emailssl is "true" then set s to s & " with ssl"
              set s to s & return & "end run"
              try
      run script s with parameters {emailfrom, emailto, emailsubject, filelist, emailsmtp, emailport, emailuser, emailpass}
              on error msg
                        my err("err 9: " & msg & return & return & s)
              end try
    The error message:
    OS: 10.7, CPU: Intel 80486
err 9: «script» doesn’t understand the send mail message.
    on run {fromx,theAddresses,emailsubject,filelist,smtpServer,puerto,user,pwd}
send mail to theAddresses from fromx SMTP server smtpServer port puerto subject emailsubject body filelist username user password pwd authentication auto
    end run

I suspect that the script relies on a third-party scripting addition (possibly 24U Email OSAX?), and that you either need to update to the current version or wait for the developer to make a Lion-compatible version available.
One way to verify this would be to open the script on a Snow Leopard machine and choose "Open Dictionary" from the File menu, then check what scripting additions are listed.

  • Mail not using stored password after failure to connect

I am using Mail to access several mail accounts on OSX Lion.
If Mail fails to connect to one of these accounts, when it next tries to connect, it prompts for a password instead of using the stored password.
This is proving a problem as I have one account which I frequently have problems connecting to. Therefore I get frequent annoying pop-ups asking for the password when Mail automatically checks for new mail.

  • SMTP Outgoing Mail Server does not use password so I can not send mail..

    Hi All
Can anyone help me with this?
My POP email accounts on Hosting.365.ie do not use a password to authenticate outgoing mail. They rely on a prior authenticated download to enable the outgoing mail server.
On my MacBook Pro there is an option in the SMTP server settings under authentication for "none' and all my accounts work perfectly on the MacBook.
However my iPhone4 (brand new) and iPad (both up to date) there is no option under the SMTP server settings for "none". I think this is the root of the problem. Has anyone else come across this or is there a workaround?
Many thanks if anyone has any insights.
    Peter

Yeah, I don't know why the difference. Interestingly for me, the iOS version in iOS4.2 is "better" than the OSX version of Mail because now I can have more than one Exchange account.
I am sympathetic with your need to separate your lives. I have a client that accidentally got one of my alternate email addresses and cannot/will not update his address book with the "correct" address, despite my requesting several times over the course of a year. In any case, I don't think there is any way around this other than completely changing your email address. (If not a second Gmail, then Yahoo, Hotmail or other email provider.)
The only time I've ever seen a "no password" SMTP server was as I previously said, it used a "network authentication" method. Many, many moons ago, SMTP servers often didn't have password authentication so would often be used for spam relaying. Before mobile users, "network authentication" by ISPs was fine since they could figure out which user was spamming since they could trace the IP addr, MAC addr, etc back through the physical link to the user. But with mobile users who change networks constantly, the general trend was to password authentication, even for wired ISPs since their users would want to have access to send mail while away from home. (e.g.: you're a RoadRunner customer, but want to send mail while using your laptop on vacation in Italy.) This "prior authenticated download" I've never heard of anyone else doing.

  • HT4897 Using aliases with icloud mail

When using aliases in icloud mail is there a way the recipient does not see your real icloud email address?  Right now when using an aliase the recipient get my real email address in the header of the message and it was sent on behalf of the the aliase.

    Hello KYMP0R,
Using an alias should conceal your actual iCloud email address, even in the headers of messages sent. You may need to verify that you are sending messages from that alias. In order to send a message from your alias, select that address in the From field when composing a message.
Send a message from a different account. Tap the From field to choose an account.

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

  • I'm exhausted of trying to find a solution to a problem created by Apple. I have moved to iCloud, following your instructions and now I can not use my mobileme e-mail address. How can I contact directly with Apple, not just an automatic reply phone number

I'm exhausted of trying to find a solution to a problem created by Apple. I have moved to icloud following all your instructions and now I can not use my mobile me e-mail address. I can not activate icloud because when I put my e-mail address it answers that somebody is already using my address. I have my old e-mails, but I can not receive any e-mail or send them.
I have contacted Apple Technical Support in Spain and I was sent an e-mail saying that I have to call a phone number and when I call it is always an answering machine who answers that says that I have to pay 50€ for a consultation or wait for 10 minutes. When I have made the consultation it was never mentioned that I have to pay 50€ for a phone consultation. If I don't want to wait I have to pay for the Apple Tecnical Support which cost 250 €, this was not mentioned in the technical support page.
Can somebody let me know how can I contact Apple in another way in order to talk with a human being or chat directly? I was very happy just using my mobileme e-mails, I didn't need any clouds and I was force by Apple to registered if I want to continue using my mobileme e-mail address.

  • How do I see a list of all my Apple Mail contacts. I do not use address book. I just want to see all the email addresses stored on my Mac

    Hi All,
I have been using Mail for the past three years without need to send a regular mailing list mailout.
I now need to send group emails and all I want to do is browse my contacts aquired over the last three years to create a list. I have not used Address Book for anything other than phone contacts so please do not point me in that dirrection.
There must be a list of all email contacts stored somewhere on the Mac that I can look through. It is an almost impossible task to do this by browsing my inbox/sent folders.
Hope you can help and thanks in advance!
