RS232 cable settings

Hello, I have a Tungsten T5, and I purchased a palm - RS232 cable adaptor to use with a datalogger for my research.  Under Preferences -> Communication -> Connections, what Available Connection should I use?  I am using 3rd party software (from the datalogger's manufacturer) to connect to the datalogger.  With my old palm, I used to be able to connect, but am having problems with the T5.  Thanks in advance for any help on this.

Hi Huy,
If anychance you remember the ip address you have configured on switch for management purpose and you have configure vty lines for telnet access then you can connect the switch with pc via ethernet cable on same vlan port for which you have also configured ip for management purpose.
Incase you are not able to telnet or you have not alraedy configured your switch for telnet purpose, try 2-3 another console cable to access the siwtch via console cable. If no luck by anychance have you configured your switch for web access via CMS,
If nothing works...I am sorry you have to go for RMA.
But make sure you try 2-3 different console cables and try to rebulid your hyperterminal session.

I am trying to connect an RS232 cable from a PC com1 to SUN

I have tried to set com1 to various settings 8 none 1 none, 7 none 1

    Hello, Michael and John,
I would like to add some additional information to John's answer.
You can use Remote VISA on your Solaris workstation to access the VXIpc's VXI interface using the same VISA API you would use to access a local device. First, on your VXIpc, you should install VISA Server if it's not already installed. (It likely is already installed, so you can probably skip that step.) Then configure the VISA Server through your VISA options in MAX to start when the computer starts and allow connections from your Sun workstation. After setting up your VXIpc in this way, from your Sun workstation you can connect to any VISA resource on the VXIpc by specifying the resource string "visa://[address-of-VXIpc]/[local-resource-name]". "[address-of-VXIpc]" should be replaced by the IP address in the form "a.b.c.d", or by the VXIpc's network name, and the "[local-resource-name]" should refer to any VISA resource that is on the VXIpc, such as "VXI0::0::INSTR". You can even use viFindRsrc() to find remote resources with this mechanism.
Using this information, you should be able to write your VISA application on your Sun workstation. To test your remote VISA setup, you can run NIvisaic on your Sun workstation to access the VXIpc interactively.
Note that if you are doing a lot of single-point access, with functions such as viIn and viOut, or using other small transfers, these accesses will be considerably slower than they would be if written directly on the VXIpc, as each one must travel across the network to get a response, and networks have a high latency.
Also, you will need NI-VISA 3.1 on your Solaris workstation to access your VXIpc this way.

  • Mac Mini - USB/RS232 Cable - help to command display

Could anyone help out with advice in a project where we would like to put a monitor in different modes from a Mac Mini.
The interface for the commands to the display is a RS232 serial port. As Mac Mini has no RS232 port but there are USB to RS232 cables on the market our question is if one could use apple script or shell script to make the job?
    Would really appreciate any advice!

this has absolutely nothing to do with scripting. you need a USB to serial adapter.

A vi I just finished writing for a Melcor TEC controller uses a Watlow 96. It connects to the RS-232 and uses modbus protocol. Sorry about the late reply.

  • I have a Rs232/Rs485 converter(CV 24).How can I connect it from a rs485 to a rs232 cable?

I have a RS 485(8 serial outputs) and a motor with a rs232 cable. I don´t have a comunication between the motor and the card...also I have a rs232/rs485 converter. How can I connect the converter to the card. Give me all the possible solutions.

    Hey bubuse,
First of all make sure your motor is RS232. If you are using one of NI's 8 port RS485 cards (http://sine.ni.com/apps/we/nioc.vp?cid=1846〈=US) it should include a dongle that takes the connector out to individual 9-pin dsub connectors.
From there, most RS232 cables have 9-pin dsub connectors and the converter should just plug in between the cables. Here is a link that shows the pinouts and voltage differences of both protocols.
    http://www.ni.com/pdf/manuals/371253a.pdf
However, these devices rarely work well. If your motor is RS232 they I would suggest you purchase a RS232 board. NI has a new line of boards that are extremely fast and easy to use. They can hit custom baud rates and will show up as normal COM ports on your computer.
In the long run you will have fewer problems.

    I hope this helps out.

  • RS232 cable what?

I have been told that to connect a Sun to a PC Port a to Com1 to
connect from the PC to the SUN via hyperterminal or Tera term pro
that It is necessary to use a null modem cable. Obviously that is not
what I have and have been trying to use a breakout box to verify.
Does anyone have the directions on what and how to setup this
connection. I cannot find anything on the web about it.

    Hello,
I only get the bootup banner then nothing.
To repeat myself: Your issue is likely caused by improper wiring (handshaking signals). Review chapter 3 and figure 3-1 in the Ultra 30 Service Manual.
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_pub/Systems/U30/U30.html
You can try to revert to the default settings. With an installed frame buffer and attached Sun keyboard, press and hold the Stop and N keys before powering on the system. Continue to hold the keys until the system banner displays on the monitor.
I cannot access the sun doc:
    http://sunsolve.sun.com/handbook_private/Devices/Cables/530-2889.html
That's right, the link referrs to the SSH for contract customers. What do you expect on this page ?
It's only the wiring on an adapter (RJ45-DB25F) you don't own !
Ctl Break on the PC does nothing.
    Use TeraTerm instead (ALT+B).
.. cannot find any info on pin-outs on available products.
You can find the pin-out in the User's Guide or Service Manual of the system.
Some systems have the serial port A and B combined in a single DB25 connector. The console port is serial A and the pin-out for this port doesn't differ from the "un-combined" connectors.
Some systems use due to space limitations a RJ45 connector for the serial/console port. These systems are supplied with RJ45-DB25F and RJ45-DB9F adapters for use with a standard network cable.
This is more general site: http://www.sunhelp.org/unix-serial-port-resources/
I would recommend you keep the null-modem cable simple. Two wires (TxD and RxD crossed between the systems) and GND tied to DTR inside each plug are suficient.

  • Barcode / Weight from RS232 Cable interface

We are in the process of developing a solution in WDA which is  very tightly integrated with standard SAP.
For most of the inputs, my client uses barcode readers attached to the PC and also for some of the operations we are suppose to get the weights from Weigh Scales directly without human intervention except for click of a button.
My queries, will WDA support these features, as it does it in standard Dynpro, Is there any specific coding beside the interface for weigh scale is required.
    Regards
    Rohit Chowdhary

    Hi Rohit,
as far as i know, but i'm really not sure in this case, there are only WD BarCode Reader API's available for Web Dynpro Java.
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/de/6b/cdf740c42f8566e10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
These and also the RFID API's are part or the mobile Add on libary and WDA isn't supported fr mobile devices up to now.
But you have a possiblility to use a virtual keystroke(simulating a keyboaurd during the scan) if your barcode vendor shippes a PC software for that. The value is then transfered into the focused WDA Input Field as if it is typed manually. For that have a look into this thread:

  • WIth LabVIEW how do I control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a RS232 to USB converter cable.

WIth LabVIEW how do I control an instrument with a RS232 output, using a RS232 to USB converter cable since I dont have rs232 ports. I have two instruments that I want to control in this manner. One is an Imada ZPS force gage with RS232 output. The other is a Panasonic HL-G103-S-J laser micrometer sensor which is RS422. I've done considerable LabVIEW programming using GPIB but I have no experience with devices like these. Any tutorial or examples would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I understand that you want to control a device which having RS 232 port as output. If so, you can use an USB-RS232 cable from PC to device and you can control or monitor the device.
    See this link http://zone.ni.com/devzone/cda/epd/p/id/2669
Also, first check the device in hyperterminal and then continue to program in labVIEW. You can find the serial VI's in Instrument I/O.

  • Control Instrument using RS232 port

I have tried to download the IVI driver of the Agilent E3633A that stated can communicate using GPIB or Serial.
I tried to initialize the instrument but no successful.
I used a twisted ( tx and rx swap) RS232 cable (female to female) to connect between the instrument and PC com port.
Please help to advice on how to control the equipments using RS232 port inlabview. Thanks!

    Hello,
Here's what you can do to verify that you have established communication with the instrument.
    First gather the relevant information:
    1. Find a command that you know your instrument "understands" (it is highly likely that it will understand *idn? which should prompt the instrument to reply with a description of itself).
    2. Verify the serial settings that your instrument uses by default, such as baud rate, number of data bits (likely 8), parity, and the number of stop bits. You can also verify what termination character the instrument uses (which it likely does); this is the last character you will need to send after sending the relevant command characters, and it will indicate the end of the command to the instrument so that it stops reading from the serial port. I doubt that the instrument is configured for flow control of any kind by default, so don't worry about that unless there is specific indication of this in the manual for your instrument.
    3. Verify the type of your cable; that is, you will need to connect pin 2 of your computer's COM port to pin 3 of your instrument's COM port, and pin 3 of your computer's COM port to pin 2 of your instrument's COM port. Some cables automatically switch these connections with the wires inside the cable, others are "straight through." You can bypass the cables altogether and just use wires to make the relevant connections initially; don't worry about a twisted pair at first, just keep the wires short and you should be ok (unless you are in a particularly noisy environment).
    Now build the LabVIEW program:
    1. Open a blank VI
    2. Navigate to and pin down the following functions palette on the block diagram:
    All Functions -> Instrument I/O -> Serial
    3. Place onto the block diagram the four VIs/functions in the top row in the order they appear (should be VISA Configure Serial Port, VISA Write, VISA Read, VISA Close); note that the open will be performed implicitly the property node inside the VISA Configure Serial Port VI (don't worry about this).
    4. Hover over the upper left hand terminal of the VISA Configure Serial Port VI, right click, and choose
Create -> Constant; now select the PC COM port you connected your instrument to in the newly created constant
    5. Create constants for the inputs to match the serial parameters that you found for your instrument above if the default values don't already match. Note that the defaults used by this VI include activating the linefeed termination character to be used when reading, as well as standard settings for serial port which may already match your instrument (check by hovering over the ports with the wiring tool; the default values will show in parenthesis)
    6. Wire the top right hand terminal to the top left hand terminal of adjacent VI's (which should be in the order noted above); this connects the resource name to each so they perform the operations on the chosen serial port
    7. Wire the bottom left to the bottom right hand terminals in a similar fashion; this connects the error clusters
    8. Almost done... now hover over the remaining left input of the VISA Write function (called write buffer), right click, and create a constant; type *idn? (and include a linefeed character at the end by typing the key)in the string constant that you just created
    9. Similarly for the read function, create a constant for the input that indicates the number of bytes to read (perhaps make this number 100 as you will likely terminate the read appropriately when a termination character is read; your instrument will likely send this), and create an indicator for the "read buffer" output which will show you the string that is read back when you run the program.
    10. You should now be able to run the program; hope it works.
I would have included a screenshot or example instead of a description, but I don't have access to that at this time and perhaps it is best to actually go through the process of building the VI anyway if you are new to LAbVIEW.
Good luck and repost if you continue to have troubles!
    Thank you,
    Best Regards,
    JLS

  • Satellite A110-137: USB 1.1 to serial cable does not work

My computer is Satellite A110-137 and the OS is Windows XP home edition v 5.1 service pack 2. Language setting is Finland.
    I have a Prolific USB 1.1 to RS232 Cable driver version 2.0.0.26.
It does not work at all. When I try to connect it to a Kantronics KAM packet radio modem using Hyper Terminal there is an error message COM3: ei voi avata. Tarkista porttiasetukset. (COM3: cannot open. Check port settings.)
The settings I have are 9600 bps, 8 databits, parity none, 1 stop bit, flow conrol hardware. This is the same both in the device driver settings and in the Hyper Terminal settings. It is 100% sure that the problem is somehow related to either Toshiba or Windows XP as the very same USB to RS232 converter works just perfectly and right at the very first time with e.g. Fujitsu ErgoPro having Windows 2000 (and that is a Pentioum 233 machine, so very old stuff indeed).
I can't get any help from Prolific, their home pages seem to be off-line now.

    Hi
I have investigated a little bit in the net and it seems that this USB 1.1 to RS232 converter creates a virtual serial port (possibly the com 3)
As far as I know the built in modem uses the same port.
Possibly there could be compatibility problems.
However, this is not a Toshiba product and therefore I would recommend contacting the Prolific support.
I was on the website and its online.

  • Bytes problem over RS232

    Hello!
I'm trying to send data between to computer using RS232.
The problem I encounter is the following:
when I send data from 0 to 127 they are well received.
from 128 to 160 they are bad received (actually 130 is received as 8218, 131 as 405, 135 as 8225).
from 160 to 255 they are well received.
I know that bytes in Java are from -128 to +127 and I could understand that number greater than 127 have problems to be transmitted, but because of those 160 to 255 numbers that are well received, I don't get it.
I tried to find a pattern with the association of number sent and received between 128 and 160 but I didn't find anything relevant...
I'm using a simple RS232 cable via an USB to RS232 converter on my computer (I don't have any serial port) while the other computer is directly using its RS232 port.
The port is configured to send data to 9,6kbps, no parity bits, 1 stop bit and 8 data bits.
Has anyone any idea of where my problem could come from?
I get really confused with that...
By the way, if some admins wants to put my post somewhere else because here is not the appropriate place, I totally understand it but could he (or she?) just mail to tell me where it has been put, because last time I posted I didn't find it anymore... lol
    Thanks ;)

    Please help me!

  • PIC32 and RS232 Issue

Hi everybody i'm new in labview, i've a problem with my two LabView interfaces for RS232 comunication trough PIC32 and PC.
My purpose is to visualize in 31 text boxes a series of data transmitted from PIC.
The data format transmitted is SGL 32bit for 32 total data (128byte) (the first array's location contain the start string for synchronize the data in rx), before the transmission, I split every array's location in 4 byte and then I transmit them serially LSB first.
My two labview interfaces are GUI1 and GUI2, the results for both is the same.
Some times the received data are correct (all the text boxes are correct filled) and other time the data are wrong (are visualized 0s and casual values).
The issues appear with the USB to RS232 converter and the RS232 cable on Desktop PC.
    Boundrate 115200 bps.
    Any suggestion? thanks everybody

  • Is it necessary to use a rs232 interface?

Hi, I have a AL104 mass scale and I'm trying to read the weight on labview, I hook it up to the computer using a rs232 cable, but I don't really understand how the device and the computer is communicating, I use VISA to write the program, but I can't locate the resourse name (address of the input) . Some one told me I might need to use a rs232-GPIB converter, because the computer is not detecting the hardware. I want to ask, is it necessary to use a converter in order for the computer to send and receive signal from the device? becasue it seems to me that even the pc and the device is connected thru the cable, the data still not transfering between the two... or how do I check the computer knows the device is "attached"??
Really appreciate if someone can go thru what I should do from the beginning to when I'm able to read the output from the computer!!!
    Thanks!!

RS-232 and GPIB are two different things.  Looking up AL104 by Google, I came across this page that as a link to the manual  http://balance.balances.com/scales/1114
The manual shows it is using RS-232.  That means you write a command to the Com port and read back the response.  There is no hardware to detect.  Your VISA port will be whatever com port you have it connected to.  Com1, com2, ....
That manual told to look for the command set.  I found this link   http://us.mt.com/mt_ext_files/Editorial/Generic/1/PL-S_SICS_0x0002467000027246000b531d_files/B-S-AL-...  That should tell you all you need to know about communicating with the balance.

    Hello!
I am trying to measure a voltage with Agilent 34401A multimeter connected to PC via RS232 cable. I installed the driver. When I am starting Read Single Measurement.vi. It gives me an error:
Error-1073807346 occured at Visa Open in Agilent 34401.lvlib: Initialize.vi->Agilent 34401 Read Single Measurement.vi
    Possible reason(s):
Visa: (Hex 0xbFFF000E) The given session or object reference is invalid.
I would like to ask, how can I adjust my system to use RS23 with Agilent 34401A, if it is possible? If not, should I get GPIB card and cable?
    Thank you!
    Yulia.

LabVIEW already comes with a driver for the 34401 pre-installed, so I'm not sure I understand what you installed. The pre-installed driver is in the Instrument I/O >> Instrument Drivers >> Agilent 34401 functions palette.
As for the control that Dennis is referring to, it's the VISA control.
As for the VISA version, you should have received a set of driver CDs along with LabVIEW. That will have the minimum VISA version required. Don't remember off the top of my head which version it is. Probably something like 4.1.

  • DMP-4400, rs232 commands not being sent to device

Recently we had deployed 16 DMP-4400 attached to televisions in our environment. All of them are configured identically, and have the same model of TVs attached to them. Four of them refuse to pass rs232 commands to the attached TVs, and are much slower to load the content to be displayed, a significant difference in loading time.  Disabling the rs232 allows the content to load at a normal speed.
I have replaced the rs232 cables, wiped out the configuration and reconfigured.
The rs232 is being enabled with the following command:
    init.startService_rs232=yes&rs232.device=/dev/ttyS1&mib.save=1&mng.reboot=1
    Firmware version 5.2.3
The rs232 parameters from the DMP:
    rs232.device          T_STRING          /dev/ttyS0
    rs232.speed          T_STRING          9600
    rs232.parity          T_STRING          none
    rs232.data_size          T_STRING          8
    rs232.stop_bits          T_STRING          1
    rs232.flow_ctrl          T_STRING          none
    rs232.tx_hex          T_STRING
    rs232.tx_str          T_STRING
    rs232.rx_buf          T_STRING
    rs232.rx_overflow_flag          T_STRING          false
    rs232.tx_cnt          T_STRING          0
    rs232.rx_cnt          T_STRING          0
When sending a command the rs232.tx_hex string should populate, and the rs232.tx_cnt should increase in value, these values never change. The commands are being sent from DMM version 5.3 and work on the 12 other DMPs that are in place.  Connecting a rs232 sniffer also shows that nothing was sent from the DMP.
    Anyone have any ideas?

It seems impossible to purchase RS232 cables with the correct pinout, everyone sales the cable with "RS232 null modem with full handshaking".  For this you need the "Simple RS232 null modem without handshaking", which only uses the 3 pins, 2, 3, and 5.
I ended up making my own cables, using RJ-45 to DB9 Adapters, and pinning them myself. Flipping TX and RX on one end, after this everything worked as expected.
