RS232 control of Sharp TV

I am working with DMM 5.2 and DMP4400G w/ 5.2
I am attempting to control a Sharp TV (LC-42D65UT) through DMM system tasks.
The Sharp TV is looking for text control rather than hex apparently.  Command codes are listed in the manual.
The format is 4 command digits followed by 4 parameter digits followed by a carriage return.
For instance, the Power off command is POWR0 followed by 3 spaces(all parameter digits MUST be filled, hence the 3 spaces)followed by a carriage return.
Using Putty I can control the TV from my PC through Putty and the command is executed as soon as I hit Enter(CR).
I ran the system task to control non-DMTech displays, then I created a system task with the following command  rs232.tx_str=POWR0
When I connect the DMP to my PC and send the command formatted without the spaces or CR the DMP sends the text correctly to Putty.  If I include a space anywhere in the command the DMP sends nothing.  The TV does not accept the command without the spaces and CR.
So, is there a way to include a space and CR in a text string to be sent by the DMP and have it send successfully the entire string?
Thanks for any help.  Mike

Sorry but the SharpUSA site is down so I can't get your particular model but here is an example
to accomplish you tasks:
Sharp LC-42D64U
Sharp product manual
http://www.sharpusa.com/files/tel_man_LC45GD6U.pdf
Page - 95 - 97 rs-232 info
Ascii to hex conversion
http://www.laynetworks.com/ASCII%20to%20hex%20value%20chart.htm
Sharp - RS232.Control
To use the RS232 commands on the DMP the serial port must be set to ON and be
pointed at the /dev/ttyS1 device.
To check this create a System Task to check your settings using number 5 below.
If your serial port is anything other than /dev/ttyS1 use number one to set it correctly.
1 Create a system task under application
use type "set"
name it "RS232 ON"
init.startService_rs232=yes&rs232.device=/dev/ttyS1&mib.save=1&mng.reboot=1
2 Create system task "RS232 OFF"
use type "set"
init.startService_rs232=no&rs232.device=/dev/ttyS1&mib.save=1&mng.reboot=1
3. Create system task "TV On" (((ascii =powr1_ _ _ + cr)))
use type "set"
rs232.tx_hex=504F5752312020200D
4. Create system task "TV OFF" (((ascii =powr0_ _ _ +cr)))
use type "set"
rs232.tx_hex=504F5752302020200D

  • RS232 control of a Samsung ME55A

I am trying to setup RS232 control over a new ME55A Samsung display.  I have tried every combination of cabling and codes I can come up with but the display does not respond.  The unique thing about this setup is the display uses a mini 3.5 jack to DB9 for it's RS232C connection.  Also the TV documentation keeps mentioning it's MDC program for remote controlling it when referencing RS232.  Is this TV not capable of basic RS232 control?  Am I missing something else?
Here is the example of how to com e up with the code (example is actually the code I need/use too):
    https://supportforums.cisco.com/docs/DOC-14104
Here you can access the user manual for it:

I've been able to do this on a wide varietly of panasonics and LG's, so this is driving me nuts!

  • Unable to capture video from my Sharp VL-NZ155 camera

I noticed that is a pretty common statement around,
even so I couldn't find an answer to my dilemma.
I have the new Mac 24" (not that new anymore) with
Firewire 800 cable, and I have Premiere Pro CS4 installed.
I can control my Sharp VL-NZ155 from the capture

    Any helpful tips?

This is it man... I've googled it and you're right,
it only turns up batteries, but... actually this is the

  • Audio tape database + digitally controlled tape deck?

I have a client who wants to digitize his large library of cassette tapes, starting with 250 tapes of stories he has told his children. I have been searching for an OS X software product or freeware that could do the job well, which would include the ability to play the indexed audio file.
The data to be indexed would include: story, tape #, start time (tape index), and all the characters in the stories, so that one could retrieve a list of stories that contain a particular character.
Another useful thing would be a digitally controlled tape deck, but the only one I can find is for the PC only. (there are some rs232 controlled decks, but no real details on how to control them, and no info about what software, and no RS-232 interface on the mac laptop in question.)
If anyone has any ideas, or knows a better forum to post this on, please let me know,
    Thanks
    Joel

    Hey Joel,
Well first lets talk about digitizing. There are many methods, and pieces of equipment to use but you can probably learn some info from the macworld article on digitizing tapes. I assume you saw the same USB deck that I saw- The Plusdeck, and while it currently does not support OSX, hope may be on the way because in their forum they have posted a want ad for a mac developer. In terms of cataloging, personally, I would just use iTunes. You can include Name, Album, Artist, Track Number, Disc Number, Grouping, Composer, BPM, Genre, and it also includes a large comments field in the metatag. I would think you could adapt all these field to your needs. However, many database apps are available for the Macintosh. In the pro world, Filemaker Pro is a pretty accepted standard. However, pricing for it is pretty steep, at $299. Another solution which may be a little more price acceptable is EagleData, which is a freeware database app. To tell you the truth- I really don't think you want to get into RS232, but if you're really interested, we can talk about programming it and the different protocols. Hope this helps...

  • RS232 Serial commands for Cisco 32" LCDs

Are the serial commands for power on/off for the Cisco 32" LCDs different than the 40" and 52" monitors?
The "rs232.tx_hex=aa11fe010111" for power on and "rs232.tx_hex=aa11fe010010" work fine on the 40"s but the 32"s do not respond to these same commands.
I know the 40" and 52" LCDs are Samsung. The 32"s appear to be LG so I would suspect the serial commands would be different as well.
I have been unable to find any documentation for the 32"s.
    Thanks in advance

    Doug,
Have you tried using the Control TV icon in the DMP Manager?
You can power on and off the Cisco 30" from here along with
    other rs232 control commands.
You also could use wireshark to sniff the wire to
see what codes the DMM are sending the DMP.
    Cisco 32"\LG - RS232.Control
To use the RS232 commands on the DMP the serial port must be set to ON and
be pointed at the /dev/ttyS1 device.
To check this create a System Task to check your settings using Task 5
below. If your serial port is anything other than /dev/ttyS1 use Task 1
    to set it correctly.
    TASKS

  • 4400G RS232 code for Samsung monitor 460MX-3

    Hi,
can some one help me on how to sent rs232 command to samsung monitor 460MX-3, i just want to sent command from the control power on and power off to the monitor.
    i have:
    1. eanble the dmp RS232 control supported, non dmtech.. option. from the dmm
    2. connect a cross serial cable to the sumsung monitor from the dmp.
i tried to turn the monitor off using this code rs232.tx_hex=0x11x0 but it doest work.
    help.
    Best Regards
    Andrew

I believe you must us a null modem cable to connect the DMP to any display. Can you verfiy?
The Cisco branded TVs are the DX model by Samsung so the same code to turn off the monitor for the Cisco TVs should work for the Samsung.
We have both Cisco and Samsung TVs in our shop and the I have used the Cisco power off command for both.

  • RS232 issue with test equipment

I have an E3631A power supply that I am controlling via RS232 and visa rs232 control.
With my labview vi, I can send commands to the device but I cannot get anything back from the device on the read side.
If I use measurement and automation explorer and send the exact same commands to the power supply, I can read the current just fine.
So what is different between the meas and auto explorer sending and receiving or opening of the port and my attached vi?
    Attachments:
    Untitled_851.vi ‏14 KB

Yes I know.  My original code had it looking at hte property node as the input to the read.  That property node always tells me 0 bytes are on the port.  So I changed the code to a hard coded value just to see if I would get any data back off the bus.
Basically what is happening is everytime I run the vi I send the 2 commands to the supply just fine but nothing comes back.  After the first run, the supply then gives me an error beep because it still detects data that is ready to send back that has not yet been retrieved.
As I said if I use meas and auto explorer this process works just fine.  I can send my 2 commands, and then when I read it gives me the data thats there.

  • Apple TV 2 choppy video playback when mirroring from Macbook Pro (Yosemite) and Macbook Air (Yosemite) but not iOS devices

Video playback is choppy (cuts out every 30-45 seconds) when air playing from both my MacBook Air 1.3 GHz Intel Core i5 running Yosemite and my husbands new MacBook Pro, but runs perfectly when mirroring from any of our iOS devices (iPhone 6+, iPad mini 3, etc.) We have Apple TV 2. This problem just started a few weeks ago, was working fine around Christmas. The problem seems to have coincidentally started right after our son tried plugging in and setting up his Chromecast on our tv. I disconnected the Chromecast, but we still have the problem. All of our software if up to date and I've tried disconnecting blue tooth, we do not have a microwave and our wifi network has a very strong signal. We have an Airport Extreme base station. Is there a solution to our problem?

    Hi leahmturner,
I see that you are experiencing an issue with choppiness while AirPlay Mirroring from your computers to your Apple TV. I have an article that contains some helpful troubleshooting steps for you regarding this issue:
About AirPlay Mirroring in OS X - Apple Support
    http://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201343
    Optimizing image quality
    Resolution matching modes
You can choose between two desktop resolution matching modes that let you select which display will have the best image. When AirPlay Mirroring is turned on, select an option under "Match Desktop Size To:" in the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra.
Match Desktop Size To: Apple TV
AirPlay Mirroring changes the desktop resolution to best match your Apple TV, resulting in a 16:9 image that fills the HDTV screen. This setting often produces the sharpest image on the HDTV. The aspect ratio and/or resolution of the built-in Mac display may change to accommodate the Apple TV.
Match Desktop Size To: This Mac
AirPlay Mirroring scales the contents of the desktop to fit on the Apple TV, leaving the resolution of your Mac's display unchanged. Use this setting for the sharpest image on your Mac's display. Depending on your Mac model, the resulting image may not fill the HDTV screen.
    Troubleshooting AirPlay Mirroring
If you don't see mirroring options
If your Mac and Apple TV are on the same network, but no AirPlay Mirroring menu appears, your Apple TV may be asleep. Simply press a button on your Apple TV remote to wake it up. After a few seconds, the AirPlay Mirroring menu extra appears. If you still don't see the options you expect, make sure your Apple TV has the current software update installed. Also make sure that you have the "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" option selected in the Displays pane of System Preferences.
If the menu bar or Dock is cropped
Some HDTVs have bezels that cover a small percentage of the screen. This can result in a slight cropping of a full-resolution HDTV image. Depending on the HDTV model, AirPlay Mirroring may automatically adjust the picture size to prevent cropping.  If you are using OS X Mountain Lion or later, and you see cropping of the menu bar or Dock when using AirPlay Mirroring, toggle the Overscan correction option in Displays preferences.
    Minimize video post-processing
HDTVs often apply picture quality enhancements intended to improve the look of film and video sources. In some cases, these enhancements can lead to over-sharpening artifacts when displaying your Mac desktop. Some HDTV models have built-in settings to change or disable the enhancements for use with a computer (computer, presentation, or game modes). Otherwise, the controls for sharpness, detail enhancement and noise reduction can be used to optimize the appearance of the Mac desktop. Consult your HDTV’s manual for guidance on the appropriate settings for use with a computer.
    Firewall security settings
If you use a firewall, make sure the following firewall security options have been set to allow AirPlay Mirroring to work:
Choose System Preferences from the Apple menu ().
Click Security & Privacy, then click Firewall.
Click the lock icon to unlock it if it's locked, then type an administrator name and password.
    Click Firewall Options.
Deselect (uncheck) the “Block all incoming connections” checkbox.
Select (check) the “Automatically allow signed software to receive incoming connections” checkbox.
Thanks for coming to the Apple Support Communities!

  • New to Mac: help me adjust my Windows workflow to iPhoto

I recently switched to Mac, mostly in the hopes of spending less time thinking about how the computer works and more time doing what I want to do.
In fact, what made me finally start seriously thinking about a Mac is when I heard about the iPhoto '08 events feature, where it automatically split the photos based on the dates. I thought that was genius in how simple, yet effective it was.
I take quite a few photos. I take a lot of random photos of my car (I'm a car guy), but I also take some photos at parties, friend visits and family visits, etc. I often take several of photos of the same thing, because, heck, there's plenty of space on the memory card, and maybe one of the subsequent photos will be better than the first.
One common scenario for me is going to a social gathering of some kind and then posting the photos of that event online.
My Windows XP workflow used to be as follows:
    1. Connect camera
    2. Import photos into a folder named after the event using Windows Photo import. If several different events, select several sets and import them separately into separate folders. E.g. "My Pictures\Spring Cleaning Day Apr 2008"
    3. Browse the photos using Windows File Viewer and delete any obviously poor photos and select the least blurry of several duplicates.
So that above is fairly straighforward. Now, I need to get these photos up online. A while back, I set up for myself a website that runs Gallery 1.x software, so I could just upload photos via a web interface and have them viewable with automatic thumbnails.
The thing is: I don't want to upload ALL images online. Just most of them (the best).
    4. Open the photos I'm interested in a photo editor, one by one.
    5. Crop, adjust levels, shadows, colors, etc.
    6. Resize photo to a "large but not too large" web size, usually either 1200 or 1400 pixels wide.
    7. Adjust sharpness on the resized photo to make sure it looks good when viewed at actual pixel size.
    8. Save photo in a subfolder called "forweb", e.g. My Pictures\Spring Cleaning Day Apr 2008\forweb. This way, I get to keep all the originals from the camera and my resized web-ready photos separate.
    9. Upload all photos from the "forweb" folder using a web interface, typing up descriptions for each.
When I'm done, I have a gallery that has thumbnails, mid-size versions of the photos (800 pixels wide, for easy viewing) and a "full-size" version for a detailed view (but not as huge as the one that came out of the camera... so it's not original size). In fact, the original size photos are huge (as I take them at 7.1MP resolution with the lowest compression), about 2-3MB each, and so I'd never want to upload a 100 3MB photos. A waste of space.
Overall, the result is pretty good: most people view the midsize photos and save full-size (1200 or 1400 pix wide) photos of things they particularly like.
However, the process is too time consuming. In particular, it takes forever to go through each photo and resize it and crop it. The process of resizing and saving each individual photo in the separate "forweb" is quite a bit of overhead. Sometimes I kind of dread having to post photos up online after events, and it should totally not be that way!
I bought a .Mac subscription after seeing the fancy web galleries. I am hoping that the combination of iPhoto and .Mac can help me get my photos up on the web quicker.
So now, the iPhoto workflow. What should it be?
    Here's my guess:
    1. Connect camera.
    2. Import all photos, naming each event after importing.
    3. Delete poor photos or blurry duplicates.
    4. Identify photos I want to display on the gallery (those worth keeping) and hide all others.
    5. Crop and adjust shadows/colors/etc.
    6. Select "Web gallery" to share the event.
    And then I'm done.
So that sounds pretty good right there. Except, I have several reservations and questions:
    1. Is it better to mark photos I don't want in the web gallery as hidden (so I can just upload the entire gallery) or should I just select the photos I want to upload online into the web gallery? It seems to work either way. On one hand, it seems better to hide the photos, because then when they get synced to my iPhone, I have the most relevant photos and not the "extras." Also, if I'm showing photos from my laptop, I'm also showing the cream of the crop and not everything. On the other hand, the concept of hiding photos is kind of unusual to me. Feels strange to "hide" photos.
    2. What to do for a web gallery full size that's not as huge as the original camera size? When uploading to .Mac, I only have an option of Optimized or Actual Size. Optimized size is 1024 pixels wide. That's too small for a detailed views or for wallpaper purposes. The problem is that the "Actual Size" from my camera is huge (~3000 pixels wide). I don't really want to burden people with the downloading of the 2-3MB "Actual Size."
However, it seems that it's tricky to implement such a 1200-1400-pixel-wide "full size" with iPhoto. There is no resize option within iPhoto that I could find. The best I could find was a crop with a constrain size option. I guess I would have to constrain-size crop to something like 1400x1000 first? And then crop again to get the shape I want?
Also, sharpness adjustment seems useless when adjusting 7MP photos. In my Windows workflow, I found sharpness much more useful when tweaking photos after they have been resized to this "full-size" 1200-1400 wide resolution. This again means that I'd have to do the crop "trick". It feels strange though that everything else is so straighforward, but resizing photos within iPhoto isn't.
I guess that's where the whole workflow question is. The iPhoto workflow is to keep your originals intact and maintain adjusted duplicates. But resizing is not a suggested part of this workflow--instead, it is expected that any resizing is done on the way "out" of the library (e.g. File->Export or web gallery publishing).
I wish I could introduce an intermediate "optimized" setting for Web Gallery upload (although then I don't have that precise control of sharpness after resizing).
Maybe I am overthinking this and, given that I have 10GB of storage space with .Mac, I should just give up and let it upload my 3000-pix wide 2-3MB JPG originals (i.e. use the "actual size" setting)?
    3. Can anyone provide some practical uses for the "albums" setting and contrast their use vs events? I just want to get a better insight into the practical difference. It seems that albums are not very useful or rather would be rarely used, given the main categorization of all photos into events. It seems that the only use for albums would be to bring together photos across different events. For example, I could make an album of all of the photos of my car's odometer or put together my best random city shots. Maybe I just answered my own question? Still, interested into your use of albums.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
So now, the iPhoto workflow. What should it be?
    This is pretty good:
    1. Connect camera.
    2. Import all photos, naming each event after importing.
    3. Delete poor photos or blurry duplicates.
    4. Identify photos I want to display on the gallery (those worth keeping) and hide all others.
Well I would make a small change here. There are reports of folks getting hidden photos turning up in their web galleries. So, instead I would flag the photos I want to upload and then create an ALBUM from them. (or you can just drag and drop them to an album) Also, you can add to your gallery simply by adding to the album. Or use Ratings and/or keywords, see below
    5. Crop and adjust shadows/colors/etc.
    6. Select "Web gallery" to share the event.
    (or Album)
You cannot change the size of images that are in the Gallery. It's a flash based "movie". Those size options refer to the file size of images that you allow folks to download from the gallery.
Events are a really limited way of organising your pics. Events in the iPhoto Window correspond exactly with the Folders in the Originals Folder in the iPhoto Library package file (Right click on it in the Pictures Folder -> Show Package Contents).
You can move photos between Events, you can rename Events, edit them, create them, as long as you do it via the iPhoto Window. Check out the Info Pane (wee 'i', lower left) the name and date fields are editable. Edit a Event Name using the Info Pane, the Event Folder in iPhoto Library/Originals will also have the new name.
    That's it.
Albums can be based on any criteria you can think of - and with Smart Albums this can be done automatically.
For instance, back in your work flow above, you sort the pic and hide the one's you don't want to upload. Here's another way of doing it. Rate the pics, from 1 - 5, and then
    File -> New Smart Album
    Rating -> Is -> 5 stars
will find your favourites. Best yet, it will update that album every time you rate new pics. You can base Smart Albums on a lot of criteria - date, rating, keyword, camera model... have a look and see the full list, and these can be combined together...
The other great plus with Albums is that, because they are virtual, a pic can be in 1, 10 or 100 albums with no wasted disk space. But if a pic is in more than one Event you're dealing with a duplicate file.
Frankly, a Event is a bucket of Pics, and Album is a coherent organisation based on any criteria you can think of.

I currently do all of the control interactively through the front panel UI. I would like to have my VI be able to run off a script... not an external scripting language, but something like the Setpoint Profile VI's that come with the PID control toolset.
So obviously, implementing the Setpoint Profile VI's for my temperature controllers is pretty trivial. My problem is that I have many other devices which aren't necessarily controlled the same way. For example, for PID temperature control, you would just continually set the setpoint at a given interval, but for RS232-controlled pump, you would onl
y want to send a signal to stop or start it. I would like to have the scripting be a feature of the existing interactive VI (so I can toggle between automated and manual modes with a switch), and hopefully not have to have completely separate code.
So bascially I am wondering if anyone has a good strategies or examples for doing such a thing. Here are some issues I can think of:
    - is it better to have one huge script that has the settings for all devices, or should I have separate scripts and synchronize them?
    - I was considering scripting the UI itself, kind of like a "ghost user" using property nodes, but recent discussions on this board tell me this is not very efficient.
    - are my expectations realistic?
thanks in advance for any advice.

    Hi,
I think that you should implement a similar idea to the SetPoint Profile VI. One of the inputs to this VI is an array of clusters where each cluster has the time-value pair (setpoint). One approach would be to change the cluster to contain time and values for each device you are trying to automate. For example, you would have time, value for the temperature control, value for the pump and so on. Since the value for the pump would be on and off, you would want to have three values: ON, OFF and IGNORE(do nothing to pump at this time). Having an array of cluster with each cluster containing time and values for all your devices will allow you to synchronize the flow of your application since the time value will be common for all the devices.
    Good luck
with the application. I hope this helps.
    Sincerely,

  • Interface programming

    Hi folks,
i'm currently looking for tutorials/books/links on how to program interfaces (like RS 232). I want to use the computer as a switching device for e.g. lights. I hope someone can help me out... until now I find it difficult to retrieve such information.
    Thanks

You can't use RS232 for switching lights.
You can however, buy or build devices that RS232 controls to do that.
But those devices then define the 'interface' that the RS232 uses to control the device (regardless of what the device does.) Some (all?) of the commercial solutions have device drivers that provide a C interface to do this.
To use a C interface requires JNI (Java Native Interface.)
Searching via amazon.com for 'RS232' turned up one book. Seems like I remember another, but it might be out of print.
You might also shop around at the local electronics stores and home improvement stores. There is at least one control interface that provides home utility switching via 'electric socket' network. These can be controlled with a computer and they publish the interface. Although probably not relevant to you the Perl Journal had an article in the last year on one of these.
Look in your local magazine store for electronic magazines and see if they have a web search for past articles. RS232 is a popular control interface, so articles often show up.
Look in the local book store under the hardware sections.

  • Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video

    Hi,
I just went to the store to get a HDMI-DVI and mini (from my macbook) to DVI to watch my MB on my tv. I only see the desktop background without the icons or any window I have open. What am I doing wrong? Please help Are there any specials steps to see the whole enchilada?
    Here are my tv's specs:
Connections: 3 HDMI; 1 S-Video input; 2 Component Video; 3 Composite Video Inputs; 1 RS232 Control; 1 Digital Audio Output; 1 PC Video Input; 1 PC Audio Input
    thank you.

Connect the MB to its AC adapter. Now close the lid on the MB so it goes to sleep. Now plug in a USB mouse to the MB so it wakes up again. When it wakes up with the lid down, only the TV will be used as the display and the menu bar and everything will be on the TV. Once that happens, you can open the MacBook's lid if you need to use the keyboard. You could also plug in a USB keyboard and leave the lid down as an alternative. If you don't own a USB keyboard or USB mouse, you can wake up the MB with another USB device, like a flash memory stick.

  • Selection tolorence problem

I have many images with alpha channels that I need to use as a clipping path. Easy enough.
    1. Turn alpha to selection
    2. use selection as clipping path.
When I turn the alpha to a selection, I want anti-aliasing turned OFF. I want jagged edges. Where is this controlled?
    Thanks,
    Dean

Go into Quick mask (Q) and use levels (control L) to control how sharp you want your edges. Or if you really do want completely jagged edges Image/Adjustments/Threshold. Then hit Q again.
