Run-on spell check

  Hi, I use InDesign CS5 to write technical manuals. I don’t know if it’s because they contain many charts, illustrations, etc., but every time I check spelling, the Spell Check feature jumps randomly through the document, rechecking the same pages over and over. It misses misspelled words, rechecks accepted ones and I usually just turn it off after the second or third pass of the title page. I’ve selected US English, researched your website and forums and can’t find any reference to this problem. Am I alone, or is there some way to make it search the document thoroughly, in order, once?
Thanks,
Larry

(I've moved your thread to the InDesign General forum. I've also locked your duplicate thread in the Forum Comments forum, which is only for administrative questions about the forum).

InDesign's spell-checking feature checks the document in order by text frame, each text frame in the order of creation. That means that it jumps around and may hit the same page more than once, but should not hit the same word or phrase or textframe more than once.
I filed a bug for this (#2911712) in July of 2011. If you choose to open a case with Adobe Support about it, citing that bug number might be helpful.
This is also a problem with Find/Change.

    InDesign (CC 2014) crashing every time I try to run a spell check, I was wondering if anybody has had this before.  I'm am also experiencing a delayed response, specially when I try to type, I get the colour wheel for about 5 to 8 seconds every time I click on a text box. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • How to run a spell-checker against a FMB file?

    We have an issue like this. Our developers make lot of spelling mistakes for the pop-up messages shown using alerts. Is there a tool where you input a FMB and then it will output spelling mistakes?
    Forms version is 10g.

    No , there is no tool for that.
    What you could do is convert to XML and search for all the alerts and put that text through a spell checker. Trouble with that is that is that most of the XML won't be real words eg: item names so you can't just check it all.
    What you could also do is put the alert text in a database table and then call a function to get the text : at least being in a database table you can easily update the spelling mistakes.
    or tell your developers to use an online dictionary.
    Hope that is of some help,
    Steve

  • Can spell check run only within a certain paragraph style?

    Hello fellow designers.
    I am using InDesign CS3. I have quite a large Exhibitor Directory list for a conference guide and need to run spell check on it. I would however like to just run the spell check on the company description portion and not on all the international addresses and company names. Is this possible? Is there a third-party plugin to assist in this task?
    I appreciate all your help and advice in advance.
    Thank you kindly.
    --Dimitry

    Here's what you can do. Though it my not be quicker...
    Do a search for the paragraph format (It will select all your text)
    Check spelling with search set to selection.
    On CS$ both panels stay open making it pretty easy to check back and forth. Not perfect, but perhaps a bit faster than a general search.

  • Why does Apple charge for spell check while MS Word offers it for free?

    I have been using MS Office for Mac until recently when I could not open PowerPoint files sent to me. I bought iWork '08 to remedy that and right after I installed it, Spell Catcher said my trial period was up and that I could buy it. Of course, I'm NOT going to buy it! I tried running a spell check in Pages but it did not pick up on all of my purposely misspelled words. Do I really have to PAY for spell checking? I am not impressed with iWork '08!
    As a side note: Does anyone notice how difficult it is to get into Discussions recently? Is it beacause of iPhone traffic?

    Spell Catcher is not something that is installed with iWork as far as I am aware, I have spell check built in to Pages and keynote and I have never seen any mention of "spell catcher"
    This is the company that makes SpellCatcher: http://www.rainmakerinc.com/
    They are not affiliated with Apple. In fact, No development has occurred since last year.

  • Spell Checking

    Is spell checking available in the Lightroom 5 Book Module?

    No, it is not.
    Here's what I do: I highlight the text in the Book Module, press Ctrl / Cmd + C (for "copy"), open a blank Word document (or any other text editing program with a spell checker will do) and press Ctrl / Cmd + V (for "paste").
    Then I run the spell checker in the Word document and copy and paste back into my book / text box with any changes according to the spell-check.

  • Zoom to error on spell checker

    Hi all,
    If zoomed in to an area in Illustrator CS5 and run the spell checker it would pan around the job showing where each spelling error instance was.   This function seems to have gone in CC v17 the spell checker works but does not show where the error is.  Any ideas or suggestions please?

  • Spell Check and changing multiple instances of the same word

    Hi, sorry if this has been brought up before.. I can't seem to find any reference, so here's my dilemma:
    My main writing language in Pages is Spanish and when it comes time for me to run the spell check, I usually have to change the same word a lot, because of missing accents and such. (I'd rather concentrate on writing and not worry about whether it has the right accent). Does Pages have any way to automatically detect when a word has been corrected, and pass the correction to any other instance of that word? I have tried using Find and Replace, but its not perfect, changing perfectly spelled words to include any corrections because the words, I think, appear similar. Is there a trick within Pages to do this? Does anyone know if the new version of Pages includes such a feature? Apple's iWork website and presentations fail to mention it...
    Any suggestions will be appreciated.

    I got it working, thanks es5f2000. I sat and thought about it and worked it out. (Pretty simple) Heres the code:
    public void findWord()
             x = iTab.getEditorList(iTab.getIndex());
             try
               int index = x.getDocument().getText(0, x.getDocument().getLength()).toLowerCase().indexOf(tFindText.getText().toLowerCase());
               int index2 = x.getDocument().getText(0, x.getDocument().getLength()).toLowerCase().indexOf(tFindText.getText().toLowerCase(), x.getCaretPosition());
               if (index >= 0)
                 System.out.println("found:)" + index);
                 x.requestFocus();
                 x.select(index, index + tFindText.getText().length());
                 if(x.getCaretPosition() > 0)
                   System.out.println("found:)" + index2);
                   x.requestFocus();
                   x.select(index2, index2 + tFindText.getText().length());
               else
                 System.out.println("Not found:(");
             catch(BadLocationException ie) {}
          }

  • Spell check option to skip master pages

    I'm still running CS3 so perhaps this has already been solved for but I need a spell check option to ignore the master pages. I'm a magazine designer and our master pages contain placeholder text so we can work our layouts before we have final copy. Problem is we can never run an effective spell check because there is no option to ignore the master pages so a spell check tries to check the lorum ipsum text rendering it useless. It would be wildy helpful if in the search dropdown option you could select "no masters" or something of the sort. Similar to the option in the Find/Change search dropdown, where you can choose "story" instead of "document"; in fact, this same functionality in Find/Change would be great as well. Also, "Story" is a good option, the whole document minus the master pages would be even better. That way we could check all of the active text in the document, including folios, rubrics and captions that are divided from the story.
    Let me know if I can explain this better.

    Peter,
    I'm familiar with the workaround. Trouble is when you place or paste
    your text in later, you have to remember to take it off of "no
    language" or it will continue to ignore the text. We're dealing with
    editors here, with very quick turnarounds, and the whole idea is not
    to make a mistake. Just think how easy it would be to forget to turn
    off "no language", run a spell check and think you're good to go to
    press. ... and don't say InCopy has the solution, because its not a
    useful product for us; it's cumbersome and doesn't serve us well at
    all. I really think adding functionality that would allow you to
    simply filter out the master pages in a spell check would be an
    excellent help.
    Have you tried creating customized placeholder text, something like "Replace this placeholder text with real text and tag the replacement text with such-and-such paragraph style." instead of lorem ipsum? You do this by creating a text file named "placeholder.txt" that contains your customized text, and saving it in the main InDesign directory. When you perform Type > Fill With Placeholder Text, the customized text appears with instructions.
    You can create object styles for the placeholder text frames that apply the no-language paragraph style. You can make the no-language paragraph style a color, bold, etc, to call even more attention to it.
    A simpler option would be to assure that all the text in your customized placeholder.text file is spelled correctly, so it doesn't get a hit when spell checking.
    Being able to omit Master pages from spell checks is a good idea. Would you want it to be a scope option in the spell checker, or a property of a master page? If it were a master page property, you could specify which master pages are skipped. You can enter a formal feature request at
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform.

  • Spell check unreliable

    I am using Structured Frame 8 on Windows XP SP2. I find the spell check function unreliable. On one document it finds "email" but misses 3 incorrect versions of "occasionally" on the same page. The Paragraph Designer shows Language as US English for the elements where my poor spelling is not being caught. Some documents seem to work fine, but if I can't count on spell check: mi bose wil knowe what a badd spellir I am!
    Is there some other setting I am missing? I'm pretty sure I didn't accidently add those typos to my dictionary.
    Thanks,
    Caroline

    Caroline,
    You may have to reset the Spell Checker to check all paragraphs. FM
    sets a flag on each paragraph after running through a spell-check and
    doesn't re-check the paragraph unless it is "changed". Sometimes,
    phunny things happen with this (or if a word gets split across a line
    due to hyphenation).
    In the Spell Checker window, click on the Dictionaries... button and
    then select the "Mark All Paragraphs for Rechecking" option.
    Then re-run the Spell Check.

  • PLEASE HELP-Is there a way to spell check footnotes in indesign cs2 separately

    Is there a way to spell check footnotes in indesign or in incopy cs2 separately?

    Select all the text - not in the footnotes - but in your normal text frames.
    Then go to Window>Type and Tables>Character
    Change the Language to No Language
    Then run your spell check. It will only check the spelling in your Footnotes now.
    When done, change the language back to whatever your usual dictionary language should be. (note it may still check text inside tables - so you might have to put up with that?)
    Anyone know of a way to script changing all the text bar footnotes to No Language - run a spell check - then reset the text language back?
    ( you don't want to hear the other crazy ideas I had for this one !)

  • Excluding VBA codes from grammar & Spell checker in word 2013

    hi Guys
    i am learning VBA & i write my notes & my exercises in a word document.
    the problem is Grammar & spell checker shows VBA codes as errors.
    i don't want to completely disable checker. is there any method or Add-on so that we introduce Correct VBA codes as correct sentences to word 2013 so that it doesn't show them as errors ?
    thanks in advanced

    i tested it but i noticed an strange behavior. it sometimes works but sometime doesn't. or sometime partially works.
    for example i have defined a box as a border around the selected Area. this applies but although i have selected "do not check spelling or grammar" , system again shows spelling & grammar errors as you see in the screenshot. it's seen even
    after i reapply style. any further help please?
    Your screenshots have far too little resolution to see anything meaningful. I cannot see what Style you're applying the attributes to, or how you're using that Style. If you're applying the Style to text that's already in the document, you may need to run the
    spell-checker to clear the 'error' underlining that was already there.
    Cheers

    [MS MVP - Word]
    i have created the "NOGrammarSpellCheck" Style correctly.
    yes i had written some VBA codes in my doc, then i created my "NoGrammarCheck" Style & Applied it on the selected Exiting codes. but again errors are shown. i noticed that when i again click on my style to apply, know errors disappear.
    so i found that if codes exit before, we must apply the
    "NoGrammarCheck" Style Twice so that it completely be applied.
    but if we Apply the style on a blank area in word doc & then paste our VBA codes in that Area, now everything is ok & no grammar or spell check is shown.
    am i correct ?

  • Disable auto spell check

    Is there any way to set iPhoto to NOT "Check Spelling while typing" by default ? I know I can set that every time I type in a text box, but I want to make that the preference. Really annoying to see those red underlines in every text box simply because I use a specialized vocabulary.

    Run the Spell checker and for those specialized words click on the Learn button. They won't be highlighted any more after that.

  • RH7 - Spell Checker and Smart Index Wizard looking in all folders?

    Hi all,
    RE: RH7 - Spell Checker and the Smart Index Wizard looking in all folders instead of just TOC topics?
    While running the Spell Checker and the Smart Index Wizard I am getting the impression they are looking in *all* the folders under the Project Files folder, and not just the topics I have chosen to insert into my TOC. Is this true? If so, is it possible to set RH so that it only looks in TOC topics?
    TIA
    - avraham

    Hi Peter -
    Thanks for your reply. Yes, the pop-up topics are in the same
    folders as the other topics and I am choosing "Any Status" (right
    now all of the topics in the project are the same status anyway).
    What's even stranger is that after I posted my original
    message, I found that it picked up about five of my 100 or so
    pop-up topics, yet ignored the rest. I cannot find ANYTHING about
    these included topics that differs from the ignored topics.
    Bizarre.
    Since I need to move forward ASAP, I am now going through
    each pop-up topic individually and using the Smart Index option on
    the Topic Properties Index tab. It works just fine; is just
    time-consuming, but actually may end up saving me time on the Index
    in the long-run, since I can define which keywords Robo adds to
    each topic on the front-end (not have to prune out worthless
    entries later).
    My guess is that this issue may have to do with the
    conversion of the files from RH 5 to RH 6. It shouldn't - all of
    the pop-up topics were added after I converted to RH 6, but I've
    noticed odd things can happen when you bring a project into a newer
    version of the program.
    Thanks again, Peter.
    I don't have an answer but I have a workaround that
    I can live with!

    My spell check doesn't work.  I run it but nothing happens

    Hey benjamin,
    Please let me know what Acrobat version are you using.
    You might need to go into Edit> Preferences> Spelling and check if 'Check spelling when typing' is enabled or not.
    Are you trying to do the same thing? Have you tried repairing Acrobat?
    Hope to hear from you.
