Run servlet once

How do I run a servlet once per session? That is, whenever a user visits my website by typing www.sitename.com and before the default page is displayed.

You could try one of the following, depending on your webserver:
1. change the default page to the URL of the servlet you want to run
2. map your / (document root) to the servlet
The first choice is probably preferable/easier.

    Hi,Is it happening for the all the subsequent requests or periodically is it giving the output. If periodically it is giving the output, have you configured any iAS cluster with round robin load balancing. Then your configuration is not complete.Other wise check your kjs is down.Still if you have any issues plese post with few more details of your configuration.Thanks,Rakesh,Developer-Support Team, iAS.g1 wrote:running Solaris 2.6 iAS- 6.0sp3 iPlanet webserver 6.0 sp1I can run my servlet (which calls an Ejb) once through a browser front end.... all subsequent calls fail as follows:Error (0x3 0x0 0x0 0x80240011):--------------------------------------------------------------------------------BIND step: could not bind to {E8836A8D-C104-1BB0-9C08-080020E7571D}The GUID here is referring to the servlet. Hi
    Perhaps you cannot run servlet without using browser. But you can make that program as an application in order to run in Dos or Unix shell.
    But still you can run servlet without using browser How?
    You can debug servlets with the same jdb commands you use to debug an applet or an application. The JavaTM Servlet Development Kit (JSDK) provides a standalone program
    called servletrunner that lets you run a servlet without a web browser. On most systems, this program simply runs the java sun.servlet.http.HttpServer command. You
    can, therefore, start a jdb session with the HttpServer class.
    A key point to remember when debugging servlets is that Java Web server and servletrunner achieve servlet loading and unloading by not including the servlets directory on
    the CLASSPATH. This means the servlets are loaded using a custom classloader and not the default system classloader.
    Running servletrunner in Debug Mode
    Running Java Web ServerTM in Debug Mode
    Running servletrunner in Debug Mode
    In this example, the servlets examples directory is included on the CLASSPATH. You can configure the CLASSPATH for debug mode as follows:
    Unix
    $ export CLASSPATH=./lib/jsdk.jar:./examples:$CLASSPATH
    Windows
    $ set CLASSPATH=lib\jsdk.jar;examples;%classpath%
    To start the servletrunner program you can either run the supplied startup script called servletrunner or just supply the servletrunner classes as a parameter to jdb. This
    example uses the parameter to servletrunner.
    $ jdb sun.servlet.http.HttpServer
    Initializing jdb...

    main[1] servletrunner starting with settings:
    port = 8080

    max handlers = 100
    timeout = 5000
    servlet dir = ./examples
    document dir = ./examples
    servlet propfile = ./examples/servlet.properties
    To run SnoopServlet in debug mode, enter the following URL in a browser where yourmachine is the machine where you started servlet runner and 8080 is the port number
    displayed in the settings output.
    http://yourmachine:8080/servlet/SnoopServlet
    In this example jdb stops at the first line of the servlet's doGet method. The browser will wait for a response from your servlet until a timeout is reached.

    Running Java Web Server in Debug Mode
    The JSDK release does not contain classes available in the Java Web server and it also has its own special servlet configuration. If you cannot run your servlet from
    servletrunner, then the other option is to run the Java Web server in debug mode.
    To do this add the -debug flag for the first parameter after the java program. For example in the script bin/js change the JAVA line to look like the following. In releases prior
    to the Java 2 platform release, you will also need to change the program pointed to by the variable $JAVA to java_g instead of java.
    Before:
    exec $JAVA $THREADS $JITCOMPILER $COMPILER $MS $MX \
    After:
    exec $JAVA -debug $THREADS $JITCOMPILER
    $COMPILER $MS $MX \
    Here is how to remotely connect to the Java Web Server. The agent password is generated on the standard output from the Java Web Server so it can be redirected into a file
    somewhere. You can find out where by checking the Java Web Server startup scripts.
    jdb -host localhost -password <the agent password>
    The servlets are loaded by a separate classloader if they are contained in the servlets directory, which is not on the CLASSPATH used when starting the Java Web server.
    Unfortunately, when debugging remotely with jdb, you cannot control the custom classloader and request it to load the servlet, so you have to either include the servlets
    directory on the CLASSPATH for debugging or load the servlet by requesting it through a web browser and then placing a breakpoint once the servlet has run.
    In this next example, the jdc.WebServer.PasswordServlet is included on the CLASSPATH when Java Web server starts. The example sets a breakpoint to stop in the service
    method of this servlet, which is the main processing method of this servlet.
    The Java Web Server standard output produces this message, which lets you proceed with the remote jdb session:
    Agent password=3yg23k
    $ jdb -host localhost -password 3yg23k
    Initializing jdb...
    > stop in jdc.WebServer.PasswordServlet:service
    Breakpoint set in jdc.WebServer.PasswordServlet.service
    > stop
    Current breakpoints set:
    jdc.WebServer.PasswordServlet:111
    The second stop lists the current breakpoints in this session and shows the line number where the breakpoint is set. You can now call the servlet through your HTML page. In
    this example, the servlet is run as a POST operation
    <FORM METHOD="post" action="/servlet/PasswordServlet">
    <INPUT TYPE=TEXT SIZE=15 Name="user" Value="">
    <INPUT TYPE=SUBMIT Name="Submit" Value="Submit">
    </FORM>
    You get control of the Java Web Server thread when the breakpoint is reached, and you can continue debugging using the same techniques as used in the Remote Debugging
    section.
    Breakpoint hit: jdc.WebServer.PasswordServlet.service
    (PasswordServlet:111) webpageservice Handler[1] where

    A common problem when using the Java WebServer and other servlet environments is that Exceptions are thrown but are caught and handled outside the scope of your servlet.
    The catch command allows you to trap all these exceptions.

  • How to run Servlets

    Hi
    Please tell me how to run servlets in NWDS.
    I made a simple program but now I am not able to deploy/run.
    Help me out

    Hi,
    1)You have to create a J2EE Web Application project.
    2)Then create a servlet in this project.
    3)Once you are done coding the servlet, create a J2EE EAR project.
    4)Add the Web project to EAR project.
    5)Open application.xml in EAR project, goto modules section, select web component, specify the context root (like /mycontext)
    6)Build and deploy EAR.
    You can run your servlet as:
    http://<server>:<port>/mycontext/<servlet-name>
    Hope it helps.

  • Tomcat 4.0 can't run Servlets at my folder

    Hello
    I try to run my servlet with timcat 4.0 at my directory:
    webapps/ild/webINF/classes/ild/claims/MyServlet
    at local web.xml:
    <servlet>
    <servlet-name>ClaimsServlet</servlet-name>
    <servlet-class>ild.claims.ClaimsServlet</servlet-class>
    </servlet>
    <servlet-mapping>
    <servlet-name>ClaimsServlet</servlet-name>
    <url-pattern>/ild/claims/claims</url-pattern>
    </servlet-mapping>
    * under Forte4J4 with tomcat 4 its running ok
    at conf/server.xml:
    <Context path="/ild" docBase="ild" debug="0" reloadable="true">
    <Logger className="org.apache.catalina.logger.FileLogger" prefix="localhost_examples_log." suffix=".txt" timestamp="true"/>
    </Context>
    and I try to run it and I got:
    (claims/clams)is not availabe
    at the examples folder I can run servlets
    what hav I don wrong?

    check it once more if your ClaimsServlet.class is in ../webapps/ild/webINF/classes/ild/claims/ folder or not? one molre important note: it is not webINF like you have written it is WEB-INF,though it is not case sensitive i guess but note the '-' in between.name your folder properly. Then change the url-pattern to something simple like /claim instead of /ild/claims/claims like you have used (just a suggestion) and then point your browser to http://localhost:<port>/ild/claim and let us know what happens

  • Materialized View to run only once in a year...

    Hi everybody...
    I want to create a materialized view which will run only once in a year and specifically some minutes after 00:00 a.m. on new year's day,
    so i created the following:
    CREATE MATERIALIZED VIEW <mv_name>
    BUILD IMMEDIATE
    REFRESH START WITH TO_DATE('01/01/2007 00:15:00','DD/MM/RRRR HH24:MI:SS')
    NEXT SYSDATE+366
    I have two notes:
    1) how to declare the refresh to be done the first new year's day after the day it'll be created , i mean not static date (01/01/2007)
    2)some years are leap and some are not , so in order to run every new year's day how should i transform the above..????
    3)is there any view which displays the next run of a materialized view..???
    the view DBA_MV_REFRESH_TIMES displays the last refresh of mv's...
    I use Oracle 10.2.0.1 on XP ...
    Thanks , a lot
    Simon

    1).
    use the expression that evaluates to next january first.
    SQL> select sysdate, add_months(trunc(sysdate, 'yyyy'), 12) from dual ;
    SYSDATE     ADD_MONTHS(
    19-JUN-2006 01-JAN-2007
    1 row selected.
    SQL>2). for this also use the same expression that will evaluate to the january first of the year after that.

  • How do I submit a job to run only once?

    I have a stored procedure that submits a job. If this job fails, I don't want it to continue trying to run. Does anyone know how to ensure that it will only run once, no matter what?
    I did try something similar to the following:
    procedure proc_submitted_as_job(p_job_no number) is
    begin
    dbms_job.broken(p_job_no, true);
    end;
    However, I found out that if you change the Broken state while a job is running, then it gets reset when the job completes.
    Basically, I'm using the dbms_job utility to run a long-running procedure in the background. If there's another way to obtain this same result, I'd love to hear it.

    I am still haveing problems so I will try and attach my program and see if you can help a little more that. It will probably be easier for you to look at this way. When you look at the diagram sequence 0 is the one the problem is in. In that sequence you will see a case structure and that is where the finite pulse train vi is. When case 1 is selected the finite pulse train will run again and again until I leave case 1. I need to have the program run the finite pulse train once and then wait and do nothing until the case is changed. The finite pulse train will be in all cases inside the case structure I just haven't done that yet, I am waiting until it works. The pulse train is used to move a stepper motor that is why running only once is im
    portant because the stepper motor is used to position something.

  • How do I get a case to run only once

    I am using an e-series DAQ board to bring a pwm signal, then I use labview to use that signal to pick one of three cases. depending on the case picked a finite pulse stream is sent out. Currently the finite pulse vi keeps repeating because the the program stays in the case. I need a way to get labview to run the finite pulse output only once, and not run again until a new case is picked. I don't have the case in a while loop.

    i use J2EE SDK to compile and run Servlet programs.I have a Servlet program with the class name defined as
    public class MyServlet extends HttpServlet ....
    the file is stored as MyServlet.java
    i set the CLASSPATH variable so that the required classes for the compilation of the program can be located.
    the program compiles without any glitches.
    However when i run the program by saying
    java MyServlet
