Running a Java app in the background on Windows

I have a Java application that runs constantly on a users computer. (Checking for files to download from a server) I want to have this application run in the background instead of putting a short cut on the Windows task bar. Can anyone direct me to a code sample, tutorial or even just let me know if this is even possible using Java.

If you create a console app and place it in a executable jar file, the program will run invisably, even if you have println statements. This is cos the jar file does not launch a console window, so no output will be displayed.

Running "in the background" is not really relvent on Windows as CMD[1] does not have this functionallty (that I know of) and you normally execute appliucations in the GUI, unless you are talking about making it a service, running when the user logs off (nohup in UNIX, Windows Services in windows), if thats what you are after, NT JAVA +Service in google.
[1] If you use a diffrent shell, such as Cygwin you can get this functionallity under Windows.

Running a java program in the background

I'm designing a network remote control system in java.
I was wondering does anyone know if it is possible to run an application at the log in screen in windows 2000. There is no GUI and no command prompt.

If you mean can you run it as a windows 2000 service so the user doesn't see it yes you can.
I recommend the following Java Service wrapper program:

It's quite simple to set up and will start when the user logs in (so long as the service is set to start automatically).

Now that 2.1 is out can anybody confirm that the you can now run 3rd party Apps in the background? They mentioned that ability back when they introduced the iPhone 3G but I haven't heard any talk about it recently with this update. Anybody able to install the update and confirm or deny this?

They must have. No apps have been able to run in the background even on 1g iphone. Maybe because Apple realize that the battery wouldn't last 2 hours with apps running in the background.

also check activity monitor - all processes - see what's using up most of your cpu resources under % CPU....
highlight anything that's really high and hit quit process......anything over 10% is considered high - unless it's your browser....

How to run a server program in the background on Linux or Windows?

I just finished writing a Java network application with multiple clients and one server.
However, I am not sure how I can run the server (SomeServer.class) in the background on Windows. Also when I am running it on Linux, I don't want it to terminate when I logout of the Linux shell.
To run the server on Linux, should I use a command like this?
nohup java -cp . SomeServer.class > output.txt &
Or is there another command, or perhaps some code that I can add to the program so that it would run in the background automatically and/or continues even when I logout of the Linux shell??
Sometimes, I also like to run the program on a Windows XP machine for testing purpose. How can I do it so that it runs in the background without openning a Console/Command Prompt window??

And is there an easy way to create a EXE file that runs the program with the default JRE in windows?

On many UNIX systems there's a utility called detach which will launch the following command in such a manner that killing the shell will not kill the process. On systems that lack this command, I'd find an open source implementation and install it.

Problem running my Java apps in my LG phone. Please help!

Hi all!!
I am quite new to the world of J2me, altough I've been coding Java for quite a few years now.
Recently I bought a LG u 8120 phone with Java-support so I decided it was time to step into the mobile Java-world.
Now I have written my first small app, a simple timer application which my phone (strangely enough) does not already have.
So what happens is this : I create my app on my PC and package it with the WTK into a jar -file and a jad-file which i transfer to the phone.
After this I can see the name of my app in the list of available programs in the phone. But when I try to run it: Nothing. The Java logo shows up for a few seconds and then I am tossed back to the menu.
I have thought of the following as possible problems:
1. the 8120 does not support MIDP2.0
2. I am doing something wrong transfering the files
3. I have missed out on one or several necessary steps in the process
Anyone who have developed Java apps for LG phones who can give me some hints?
I've used the Sun J2ME Wireless Toolkit 2.2 with MIDP2.0 and CLDC1.1 .
The apps works fine in the emulator. The problem starts when I want to run it in the phone. The phone I've tried is an LG u8120. LG apparently does not want to make life easy for its customers, so there is no support for transfering Java apps in the vendor-supplied software. I suppose that's because they want you to only download stuff from their site. However, after surfing around on some discussion forums for a while I found a program called G-thing which can be used to upload Java apps to LG-phones via USB.
Any help is very appreciated!

I have tried this and ruled out some of the possible causes.
When I added some more exception handling, I could see that a "java.lang.IllegalArguenException" is thrown.
When I ran the AudioDemo package that came with WTK2.2 I noticed that the examples that uses WAV-files do not work while the rest works fine.
My new theory is now that the u8120 does not support the WAV-format, so I will try with an mp3 instead and see what happens.
Anyone who knows if LG-phones support WAV-format?

Well I've never heard of 'VirtualDVD', but I've used MTR on this MBP. PPC apps will run on the Intel machines using the Rosetta emulation. This process is invisble to the user, and while there is a performance hit, frankly, I've yet to notice anything significant.
What will not run on the Intel machines are Classic apps.

I have two beginner's books, neither of which mentions anything beyond the command prompt.
Tricks to minimize the console window are just not professional!

it will remain open and drians battery from your iphone what you need to do is to double tap on the home button and the screen will slide up and you will see the open apps in the background tap and hold on one of the apps then a sign will come next to them and they will start wobelling press that sign and you will close the apps

Where does the problem lie? Also can anyone tell me the hierarchy of use between the Apple Maps, SIRI, and Google maps when the app is on the phone? How do you choose one over the other as the default map usage? Or better still how do you suppress SIRI from using the Apple maps app when requesting a "go to"?
I have placed an address location into the CONTACTS list and when I ask SIRI to "take me there" it found a TOTALLY different location in the metro area with the same street name. I have included the address, the quadrant, (NE) and the ZIP code into the CONTACTS list. As it turns out, no amount of canceling the trip or relocating the address in the CONTACTS list line would prevent SIRI from taking me to this bogus location. FINALLY I typed in Northeast for NE in the CONTACTS list (NE being the accepted method of defining the USPS location quadrant) , canceled the current map route and it finally found the correct address. This problem would normally not demand such a response from me to have it fixed but the address is one of a hospital in the center of town and this hospital HAS a branch location in a similar part of town (NOT the original address SIRI was trying to take me to). This screw up could be dangerous if not catastrophic to someone who was looking for a hospital location fast and did not know of these two similar locations. After all the whole POINT of directions is not just whimsical pasttime or convenience. In a pinch people need to rely on this function. OR, are my expectations set too high?
How does the iPhone select between one app or the other (Apple Maps or Gppgle Maps) as it relates to SIRI finding and showing a map route?
Why does SIRI return an address that is NOT the correct address nor is the returned location in the requested ZIP code?
Is there a known bug in the CONTACTS list that demands the USPS quadrant ID be spelled out, as opposed to abreviated, to permit SIRI to do its routing?

siri will only use apple maps, this cannot be changed. you could try google voice in the google app.

Is it possible to run a form offline (in the background)..?

Is it possible to run a form offline (in the background) by passing all the required parameters? I know this sounds crazy...but like to know if a form can be run in silent mode.
This will help us in reusing the form for online and background processing.

If there is something to run in background, why would that be a form? Normally, a form is supposed to interact with the user.
If you want to do some data crunching in the database in background, then that should be a job. And, if needed, you may submit the job even from a form, after which you may close the form. RTM for dbms_job and dbms_scheduler - that should help.

If an ABAP program and a Java apps access the same DB table, how does the Enqueue services from ABAP and Java communicate with each other to ensure locking consistency (if they even communicate with each otehr at all)?
Or there wont be such situation because there are separate schema for ABAP stack and Java stack?

A while ago I was a subject to criticism too for not granting points to helpfull answers. I appeared to be ungratefull, but I'm actually not (I guess the same goes for Vincent). I absolutely agree that good people who provide helpfull answers deserve (at least) points, but I didn't quite get the whole idea with points untill I was explicitly warned. I took some time to correct this and I granted points for all my past questions, generously, with "interest rates" for waiting.
My point is:
The pointing system is good, but unintuitive and not documented. I suggested this at that time, and I see that nothing has changed since. I see also that I'm not the only one who has experienced missunderstandings.
I repeat the message to SDN people: Please provide some info on pointing system! A few sentences behind a "What's this?" link would do. It's not such a hard work.
