Running "nightly scripts" and other behind the scenes tasks

I keep seeing posts about how the iMac Intel runs nightly scripts and/or other tasks behind the scenes. There is no mention of this in the user manual nor does Apple warn you about not putting the computer to sleep so that these tools will run. My iMac hard drive is asleep every night (as am I...) how can I get these things to run manually? How often? And can someone point me to literature to support this info?
Thanks much,
HS

Hi HS,
"There is no mention of this in the user manual"
That's because the three nightly maintenance scripts are not important at all, and don't affect Mac OS X performance.
They are only a relic from the glorious Unix system times when it was used on rather small capacities HDs, on computers that were running non stop for months or years...
Running them yourself manually, as a "perfectionist measure", can be done easily using the "daily, weekly & monthly" features in OnyX or Cocktail for example. All three tasks together, once a month or so, is fine. No harm (but useless) rerunning them many times.
Litterature:
The KB article is quite old, it shows only the default 10.2 times and commands:
- http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107388
(almost same as 10.3 and 10.4 though)
What I really would like to learn, is whether the scripts have been modified in the Intel version of Tiger.
Could you please (or Joseph or somebody else), in Finder, Go To (shiftcommandG) this folder:
/private/etc/
see if there is still the same
/private/etc/periodic
folder, with the three
/private/etc/periodic/daily
/private/etc/periodic/weekly
and
/private/etc/periodic/monthly
scripts?
(I'm asking because I don't own an Intel Mac myself).
Next you would Go To (⇧⌘G) this folder:
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons
please, see if you find those three files
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.periodic-daily.plist
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.periodic-weekly.plist
and
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.periodic-monthly.plist
If they are still there, you can open them (with TextEdit if your Developer Tools are not installed), and read the default times when the tasks are scheduled to run.
Thanks in advance!
Axl

  • Links work behind the scene

    Hi All,
    I have a pdf which is pretty much a guide. I created InDesign file with layers and exported as pdf.
    I'm trying to do the following:
    When i hit one of the navigation links, a layer associated with that link shows up. In layer that showed up, i have more links associated with images in its own layers. Everything works like i want.
    The problem is that links in non active layers work behind the scene when i hover over so i can hit link in non active layres.
    Is there a way to solve this problem?
    The script (in link action) i'm using to show/hide layers is:
    var ocgs = this.getOCGs();
    for (var i=0; i<ocgs.length; i++)
    if (ocgs[i].name == "LayerName")
    ocgs[i].state = ocgs[i].state=true;
    var ocgs = this.getOCGs();
    for (var i=0; i<ocgs.length; i++)
    if (ocgs[i].name == "LayerName")
    ocgs[i].state = ocgs[i].state=false;
    I'm using Acrobat 9 pro
    Please help
    Thanks in advance

    Thanks anyway

    Hello INFINITI11,
    I've build a test machine and I can update the content so the online content doesn't have problem in my mind.
    You may need to check your network setting here because we can see this error:
    "The operation being requested was not performed because the user has not logged on to the network. The specified service does not exist."
    You can check your account privilege and check whether you have any policy settings on your OS. You'd better also check that you've disabled all Anti-virus software.

  • Can servlets/ jsp automatically run perl scripts and executables?

    I'm a student and am new to to servlets and web programming in general.
    I need to know if it's possible to run perl scripts and executables automatically from servlets/ jsp.
    The program I am planning on creating should have a client outside a firewall that uploads perl files to a gateway machine inside the firewall, the servlet should be able to run this perl file, and then pass the resulting file as an argument to an executable, to be run by another servlet on a different server.
    I've tried looking everwhere for an answer to this and am about to revert to a cgi based approach because I'm not sure if it would work so any help/ suggestions would be much appreciated.

    Hallo,
    I think using java Runtime will help. you can do Processes that execute shell or system commands through
    Process process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec("your perl scripts here!");

  • Behind the Scenes in Captivate 2

    I'm creating an application where I ask the user to enter

  • Multiple Guest Accounts / Behind-the-scenes Login

    How would we go about logging a visitor in as a specific user behind-the-scenes (without them even seeing the Login Screen)? This question is driven from a requirement where we need to display a replica of the subportal branding at the guest view level. (Needs to go on the wish list for sure: Redirecting to a subportal and/or subportal guest accounts.) For example, if I created a [subportalname] Guest user for a subportal and wanted to automatically log a visitor in as that user, how would I trigger that process? Login PEI doesn't help me - none of those events seem to fire until the user is presented with the Login screen and manually clicks Log In - Looking at the Interpreter class right now, where we see the Guest login functionality (DoGuestLogin, etc.). How might we pass around a username and password and trigger an automatic login attempt with that data? We're basically looking for a work-around for multiple guest accounts - 1 per subportal - so that branding can appear right up front before a user actually logs in. We will have a parameter somewhere to branch out which subportal guest user to log the visitor in as. We've gone down a couple of different routes with no luck.
    Again, due to a tight timeframe, we need details - like, "Create a custom activity space replacing the Interpreter class, edit [blah] function and use [blah] function to pass in your hardcoded username and password. Rebuild [blah] and deploy [blah] dlls to [blah] directories."
    Regards,
    Sarah WheelerCox Enterprises, Inc.

    It turns out this is pretty complicated due to the internals of how user sessions get initialized. I've managed to get a test working where it logs you in as a guest in a different sub-portal. I can give you some rough information now.
    You will need a Login PEI, and a custom Space and IloginControl/IHTTPControl. Obviously, you will need to edit the Login PEI xml file and the CustomActivitySpaces.xml file to get your customizations deployed.
    The OnAfterLogin() method of the ILoginActions PEI should look something like this:
    publicRedirect OnAfterLogin(Object _oUserSession, ApplicationData arg1)
    IPTSession ptSession = (IPTSession) _oUserSession;
    if(ptSession.GetSessionInfo().GetCurrentUserID() == PT_INTRINSICS.PT_USER_GUEST)
    if(PTDebug.IsInfoTracingEnabled(Component.Portal_Browsing))
    PTDebug.Trace(Component.Portal_UI_Infrastructure, TraceType.Info,
    "Guest user login redirecting to guestloginspace to go to non-standard guest user.");
    Redirect guestRedirect = newRedirect();
    guestRedirect.SetLinkCreateNewSpace(GuestLoginSpace.STR_MVC_CLASS_NAME, null);
    guestRedirect.SetControl(GuestLoginSpace.STR_MVC_CLASS_NAME);
    returnguestRedirect;
    returnnull;
    and the LoginControl that I mentioned earlier is a bit more complicated than I implied. It also needs to be an IHTTPControl for login purposes. The custom space is very simple, so I will skip it. Here's the full class code for the custom guest login control:
    publicclassGuestLoginControl implementsILoginControl, IHTTPControl
    publicstaticfinalString STR_MVC_CLASS_NAME = "GuestLogin";

  • How do I move an object from one photo to another and then change the scene, i.e.  winter to sum?

    How do I move an object from one photo to another and then change the scene, i.e.  winter to summer?

    OK.
    Open the picture with the new scene. This will be your canvas.
    Open the picture with object A, select it with one of the selection tools, go to Edit>copy
    Go back to the new scene/canvas, Go to Edit>paste
    Repeat for object B
    Use the move tool to position A & B, each on its own layer. Use the corner handles of the bounding box to resize, if necessary
    You should have 3 layers: Background layer, and the 2 layers with A & B
    Note: It's best if the resolution of the 3 picture files is the same value.

  • Error Running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time

    Hello,
    We are having trouble running Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time on certain user's machines. Here are the specifics:
    The user opens Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer. The user then opens Discoverer in another Internet Explorer windows and receives the following error: Runtime Error! Program: C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe abnormal program termination
    As a work around, I installed Firefox on those user's machines. These users run Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer and run Discoverer in FireFox. This has solved the problem in 99% of the cases. However, there is one user who is having FireFox using Discoverer freeze when running Oracle Apps in Internet Explorer.
    Can anyone provide any insight on how I can solve these conflict issues so users can run Oracle Apps and Discoverer at the same time?
    Thanks in advance for your help,
    Carlos

    Hi Michael,
    I agree with you completely. It is reccommended to run 10g on a separate physical server unless you have sufficient resources to run on the same server (which even most large clients do not) Even then, I would recommend a separate server.
    I should have put my comment in context :-)
    a.) I was only stating that it was possible
    and
    b.) whether 10g is installed on the same physical server or separate should not affect the client browser crashing issue that was posted.
    I do have an install with EBS11i and Discoverer 10g on the same physical server and it works fine (this is sandbox/ TEST). Most of my large customers have 10g installed on multiple physical servers due to load balancing (capacity).
    I do work for Oracle. I try to help out on the forum when I can, but it is hit or miss :-(
    I would be glad to discuss anything privately.
    As for the issue at hand, I can reproduce the problem and here is what is occuring.
    I have EBS 11i configured with Jiniator 1.3.24
    I have Discoverer 10g configured with Sun Java plugin 1.4.2_06
    1. If you launch EBS 11i apps and a form with MS IE, then the browser launches the form using Jiniator JRE 1.3.xx (whatever you have configured in AutoConfig for EBS11i)
    2. Next, the user navigates to EBS 11i SSWA and launches a Discoverer workbook.
    What occurs is a child IEXPLORE.exe process is spawned from the parent IEXPLORE.exe process and Discoveer Plus is launched. The parent iexplore.exe process will be attached to the Jiniator JVM. Now if Discoverer is configured with
    a.) Sun Java Plugin or
    b.)a version of Jinitiator that is a different version from what EBS 11i is configured with
    then you may get this conflict.
    It really is an MS IE/JRE conflict with Jinitiator and Sun Java Plugi and the way the broswers attaches to the JVM (IMHO) as this behaviour could be reproduced with other non-oracle java applets.
    You can workaround the situation by:
    a. configure EBS11i and Discoverer to use the same version of Jiniator 1.3.xx
    b. educate the users to open one MS IE browser to connect to EBS11i and then open a second MS IE browser to login to EBS11i SSWA or Discoverer 10g Plus directly to launch workbooks. They need to to this by clicking on the icon and not using File >> New browser. Clicking on the icon will spawn a new parent iexplore.exe process that can attach to a second/different JVM. File >> New Window will spawan a child of the parent.
    c. As you did use two browser versions. MS IE for EBS11 connection and FireFox for Disocverer 10g connection.
    I would choose optoin b, so that you can use Sun Java Plugin with Discoverer.
    Open to any comments. I hope that helps you workaround the problem. The ideal solution is to have EBS 11i use/cerified with the 1.4 or 1.5 JRE. In poking around, I see there is a related post to this on one of Oracle's EBS 11i Product Managers Blog.

    It happens sometimes. Delete the current copies, don't hide from iTunes in the cloud if prompted, close iTunes, reopen, download from iTunes Store > Quicklinks > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer.
    While downloading click the download icon at the top right and uncheck Enable simultaneous downloads. You may find it more reliable that way.

    I was wondering what the issues were with running Reports 6i and 9i at the same time. We are planning on up grading at a client, and I heard that there are some problems with doing this. I was thinking that installing them in different ORACLE_HOME's would help keep problems to a minimum. At home I have Reports 6i and 9i running, and I have not seen any problems.

    We suggest you install 6i and 9i at different oracle home. There are no known issue about running 6i and 9i at the same time.

    hi , i want to see all my photos and other throo the icloud in the computer how i can do it ?

    Well, the obvious advice is to restore your mac's backup to the new drive - I assume you've been using Time Machine.
    If you haven't been backing up the mac, then ...
    For photos, sync the iphone to the mac vis iTunes/USB and get the photos back into iPhone on the mac.  Getting back the itunes is another problem.  You can look for mac apps that read an iOS device and copy songs to the mac.  But that won't get back all the other information that iTunes used to have.  Again, only a backup would restore all that data.  As for purchased items from the iTunes store, use the mac and connect to the store via itunes and check the purchased tab or link.  There you can redownload all purchased music and other items.
