Running SAP on Linux and HP-UX

Hi
We are planning a new installation of ERP 6.0. The solution architect is advising to install the DB on HP-UX running oracle RAC, and to install the SAP application on a seperate server running LINUX. So the SAP kernel will live on a LINUX server and the DB will live on HP-UX server.
Does anybody know if there are any issues in doing this. Has anything been documented around performance etc.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Sam

Hi
This is an interesting question, personally i wouldn't  mix platforms if it isn't necessary, even if you can keep your SAP kernel on linux. So it would be interesting to know, why your solution architect is suggesting such an installation. Lets look at some questions, they might guide you to the critical points:
- Besides the database are you going to implement SAP high availability? If yes, how?
- How are you going to do your filesystem backups? Do you have a backup environment which covers both hp-ux and linux?
- What is the reason to have SAP on linux and not simply have hp-ux instead?
I am convinced these questions are worth thinking about. So far i installed RAC within a homogenous linux environment with integrated enqueue replication. I also setup systems with database/ci on hp and linux application servers. But i did not mix that so far
Regarding performance: my experiences showed, that RAC is never faster than a single instance installation as long as you can buy a database server big enough, but with RAC you get high availability and you can scale on low cost hardware.
Best regards, Michael

  • Mixed sap environment linux and windows

    Hello,
I have a question regarding a mixed SAP environment. At the moment we are running win 2003 and sql server 2000. 1 central instance and two dialog. Now somebody suggested to migrate the central instance to linux and maxdb and keep the windows dialog instances! I've never heard about an os mixed sap environment!
Is this common or do you know such environments? Please send your feedback and pro and cons to this suggestion!
    Thank you in advance!
Does anyone knows how much the SAP migration service is?
    Best regards,
    Frank

Why migrate off of Windows O/S?  I serve 1500 concurrent users along with 90,000 users on web services on commodity hardware ($20,000 per server), all running on Windows 2003 SP2 x64 with uptime of 99.9% per month.
    Just wondering.
edit:  To answer your question, SAP is an application level program which deals with different O/S via different kernels.  However, from an SAP app to SAP app level, everything is done via TCP/IP pipes.  Doesn't matter if that pipe is provided by Linux, Unix, or Windows.

  • Running jar in Linux and Windows

    Hi
I created a jar file in Linux and it is running fine under Linux.
But when I tried to run the same jar under windows,I got the following error
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
Is there any difference between running jar files in Linux and Windows?

    Hi
I have a jar(say program.jar) containing a program which uses some libraries(again some jar files). The manifest file is written to look for the library jar files in the current directory.
    Main-Class: package_name.program_name
    Class-Path: fits.jar image.jar util.jar myutil.jar
But while running the jar file in WINDOWS (java -jar program.jar <parameter list>)
    the following error occurs:
    Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError:
    nom/tam/fits/Data"
the class Data is present in the fits.jar jarfile.
The same jar(run in the same manner)does not give any problems in Linux

  • Oracle RAC for SAP on Linux and OCFS

We are going to be installing SAP with Oracle 10.2.0.4 RAC on Linux RHEL 5.2 and OCFS.  The Oracle RAC documentation states:
You must store the following components in the cluster file system when you use RAC
    in the SAP environment:
    - Oracle Clusterware (CRS) Home
    - Oracle RDBMS Home
    - SAP Home (also /sapmnt)
    - Voting Disks
    - OCR
    - Database
I'm curious about the requirement of installing the Oracle Home on shared clustered filesystem.  In other RAC installations I've built, I installed the binaries on local filesystems on each node.  This is to facilitate the concept of rolling patches.  With the SAP's requirement, it appears rolling patches are out of the question.  Can someone enlighten me on why SAP requires the Oracle Home reside on shared filesystem.
    Thanks

We have even put /oracle/SID on OCFS, because the brtools cannot cope with local FS. If you take a backup on node1, then you cannot restore it from node2. Or you could start multiple brconnects at the same time (this is normally prevented with a lock file). Of course you could run all your all your br commands on a dedicated node, but this doesn't fit the RAC idea much.
Just my two cents, of course this does not fully explain, why the ORACLE_HOME has to be shared as well.
    Best regards, Michael
Edit: Ahh, now i recall, i really think it is because of the BR*Tools, they need the initSID.sap file in ORACLE_HOME/dbs. This implies that it won't be a big thing to get SAP on RAC running with local ORACLE_HOME's, but that doesn't help a lot as long as SAP does not officially support it...

  • SAP, Itanium, Linux and virtualization ...

If you've been there, these keywords without Linux usually lead to HP-UX and HP VSE OE with Integrity VM. But, if you try to find legitimate and practical alternative, it turns out that RHEL with Xen is the only good choice.
I have several system copies running on RHEL5.4 Linux with Xen virtualization platform, most of them are SAP ERP based with Oracle 10.2.0.4, ECC 6.0 EhP3, both on HVM Windows Server 2003 guest systems and on PV RHEL5.4 guest systems, few IDES systems, one with NW7.0 and Portal. All this is running on HP Integrity / Itanium 2 hardware (BL870c), and FC SAN, HP EVA 5000 and EVA 8400 is used for storage. What I'm interested here above all is to hear if there is anybody out there having some similar story (SAP, Itanium, and virtualization) ? Please, speak out if you are listening ...
I have some documents prepared and in preparation with details (I will put it here or in blog if there is interest), but for now just in short: systems are quite good, performance could be compared with some physical systems and production servers, but above all it is very stable. We also use VMWare for x86/x64 in our company, so I am able to compare these two platforms. There are many pros and cons, but I think that both offer good solutions. One of the main conclusions is that Xen on Itanium compared to HP-UX offers similar if not even better performance (that is, at least until HP finally gets implemented AVIO for HVM Windows guests), and if you are not in need of some high-end features (including live migration), Xen is better. There were some bumps on the road, though - Oracle showed me a bug (some workaround is available, though), but the biggest of them all is that RHEL decided to abandon support for Itanium in RHEL 6 ... SLES is a good option, but it is not supported by SAP at the moment. Any comments, questions, hints, insights, advice ?

I ment, not just hardware vendors (Oracle, Microsoft, SAP, ...) - IBM had the most performant system based on SAPS and benchmarks for long time (AFAIK, if it didn't change in the mean time, Oracle also made a competition, I don't know if anyone took the claim), but it had even worse cost/performance ratio than HP Integrity. If you want high end performance, Itanium can give you solid single-threaded horse power that x86 couldn't offer (again, AFAIK), and this is very important for databases and some business systems - it is not always about parallelization and number of concurrent users per system.

I guess, the open source community will not be able (just due to the lack of manpower and knowledge) to make gcc as good as the HP-UX aCC compilers.

Unfortunately or not, my management decided to move on with Itanium (but unfortunately for sure they decided years ago to go into production with Windows). You are right up to some point - Itanium is EPIC, but it is not just for scientific and FP, why would they've been sold successfully as platform for database servers for years ? There are IA64 CPUs with additional FPU and cache, and there are different versions and platforms - what did you exactly compare ? Generally it's still not that clear IMO. And here comes my favourite anegdote about Itanium raw performance: while doing an Oracle 10g patch (CPUJan2009 bundle, I think or something like that), carelessly for some reason (I usually don't do it that way, of course) I haven't read the patch README and I have omitted to do additional view compiling by habit (many patches/patchsets do not need it beside the usual compiling). Production database node has two dual 1.1GHz processor modules and 8 or 16G of RAM at that time (mx2 modules, let's say it is like 2 CPUs with dual cores), and the moment I have had database ready for use I have concurrently read that I need additional compiling which needs about 30 minutes for average database with 2000 objects by internal Oracle benchmarking/testing. I have sighed, did query and saw three to four times more objects in my database than stated in the README manual, and started swearing in myself about complicated corporate procedures and flows about informing users, system availability, internal QA, etc. So, I decided to put system back down with my teeth strongly clenched together and started these two scripts on production system (not the usual situation, I repeat). It lasted not more than 5 minutes ! I didn't have to follow all the strict QA procedures, inform users, and so on ...

  • Can Kerberos Server 5 be run on Arch Linux and Windows Clients use it?

    Hi There,
I was wondering (before I invested a great deal of time into it) if I could run a kerberos 5 server on my Arch box and get a Windows machine on my network to use it to log into Windows? (eg. like a domain)
I've tried doing the same with Samba 4 (which I bet will be massive when it's eventually released!), but it doesn't really work too great at the moment and wondered if I could achieve what I wanted with Kerberos 5?
I have DNS & DHCP already running and Samba 3 for network shares; but I really want the whole SSO package for all my machines. I know it's possible for my Mac Laptop to use Kerberos, but just not sure about Windows (XP/2003/7)
    Thanks,
    Tom

I will post something when I get the last issues ironed out. There is very little information about this anywhere let-alone on Arch wiki! It has been a real struggle, shame Samba 4 isn't more stable/working.
Stuff like M$ just decided to disable DES encryption by default in Windows 7. You know; the usual c**p-ness!

  • Running JVM in Linux with execl

Why if I run JVM under Linux and with execl the first argument is lost?
For example if I want to run java -version I have to do:

If I do execl("/usr/lib/java5/bin/java","-version"); it doesn't works and appears the help message that appears when you are wrong with the parameters.

  • SAP UTC(GMT) and DB2 V9

We are running SAP on AIX, and backend is DB2 V9 on Z/OS.   We would like to use UTC time, but have a slight issue with changing the entire sysplex to use UTC, instead of UTC with offsets due to other Z/OS LPARS running on the same HW box.   I know that you can request UTC from Z/OS specifically if you run the correct commands.  The issue we have is that SAP inquires of DB2 what the time is, and it responds with local time (UTC-5 in this case).  Is there a way to get DB2 to respond to SAP with just UTC without altering the Sysplex timer to UTC w/o offsets, or get one set of Z/OS Lpars to use UTC w/o effecting other LPARS running on the same HW Box?
    Thanks!
    Eric

    Eric,
I believe best practice with SAP and z/OS is to have the system clock set to UTC and then set the offset in the z/OS LPARs as desired. DB2 can then always calculate the correct UTC time for comparison with the application server. I am glad to hear you got everything changed over to this.

  • Linux and PCI-485/8. Write failed:Input/Output error

i am running red hat linux and installed my pci-485/8 serial card. actually, the machine is dual boot with windows nt 4.0 and the card works fine under nt. i followed all the instructions in the ni document "notes to users" entitled "using pci serial with linux". when i finally run serialtest i just get the error message above: Write failed:Input/output error.
not much to go on. any advice???

There are few things that we can try to trouble shoot this problem.
Try uninstalling driver for Win NT completely and reinstalling driver for Linux and see whether that solves the problem.
If that doesn't solve the problem then try using a different Linux machine ( if you have access to ) for the same card. The card works under Win NT that means card is fine and there is no hardware issue associated with this problem.
    Try recompiling your serialtest.c :
Enter the following to recompile serialtest.c and rerun serialtest.
(Also, the source code for serialtest is available for editing and viewing
at serialtest.c, provided in the PCI-SERIAL directory.)
    linux PCI-SERIAL# gcc serialtest.c -o serialtest
    linux PCI-SERIAL# ./serialtest < receive port numbe
    r>
    < transmit port number>
    If serialtest hangs:
Make sure the interface is seated correctly and tighten the screw that holds
the interface in place. Also, make sure the cables are attached to the correct
ports. In some cases, serialtest hangs if the transceiver modes
(PCI-485) are not set. Try setting both transmit and receive ports to
    transceiver mode 0 (Four-Wire Mode).
    linux# ./rs485 < transmit port number> 0
    linux# ./rs485 < receive port number> 0
    linux# ./serialtest < receive port number> < transmit port number>

  • Help starting Unbreakable Linux and Oracle

    Hello
I am getting ready to install Unbreakable Linux on a 70GB hard drive is that enough space?
I will be multibooting Windows 2003 Server 10GB, XP 30GB and Unbreakable Linux 30GB on the 70GB hard drive.
    These are my questions:
1)When I had installed Fedora installed the autopartition configured my partition automatically like this using Grub. Will Unbreakable Linux's autopartition do this the same way that Fedora did, what would I have to do to set this up :
    VG VolGroup00 30720m VolGroup
    LV LogVol01 992m swap
    LV LogVol00 29728m ext3
    /dev/sda/
    /dev/sda1 1 255 2000m vfat
    /dev/sda2 256 9545 72872m extended
    /dev/sda5 256 1785 12001m vfat "W2003 was on this partition"
/hda6 1786 5609 29996m vfat "XP was on this partition"
    /had7 5610 5622 101m ext3 /boot
    /hda8 5623 9545 30772m physical V "Fedora on this partition"
    2) Is Unbreakable Linux good for running Oracle and a web server, replication and Log shipping?
    3) What web server runs on Unbreakable Linux and how difficult is it to install?
    4) What kind of security is good for Unbreakable Linux ?
    5) What kind of firewall is good for Unbreakable Linux ?
    6) What kind of antivirus and spyware/malware is good for Unbreakable Linux ?
    7) What browser runs on Unbreakable Linux and where do I get it from?
    8) Do I run startx to get the gui if not then what?
    9) How do I get help if I have a problem setting up any of the above?

I am getting ready to install Unbreakable Linux on a 70GB hard drive is that enough space?Yes, definitely.
1)When I had installed Fedora installed the autopartition configured my partition automatically like this using Grub. Will Unbreakable Linux's autopartition do this the same way that Fedora did, what would I have to do to set this up :Not sure that if it will EL do automaticaly the same layout as Fedora but you have all informations so you can do manual partitioning.
2)Is Unbreakable Linux good for running Oracle and a web server, replication and Log shipping?Of course it is. Note Unbreakable Linux is a support program not a distribution.
    3) What web server runs on Unbreakable Linux and how difficult is it to install?AFAIK almost any major distribution is shipped with Apcache HTTP server.
So you can install HTTP server using package located in installation media.
Or you can download sources and compile your own configuration or preffered HTTP server (I preffer this option). Everything goes easy with manual: http://httpd.apache.org/docs/
    https://www.redhat.com/docs/manuals/enterprise/RHEL-4-Manual/x8664-multi-install-guide/
    4) What kind of security is good for Unbreakable Linux? What exactly do you mean under "security" term?
    5) What kind of firewall is good for Unbreakable Linux ?Each distribution (including this one) is shipped with excellent stateful (of course stateless too :-) ) firewall called "iptables" which is included in Linux kernel. More info (documentation and HOWTOs) you can find at http://netfilter.org
    6) What kind of antivirus and spyware/malware is good for Unbreakable Linux ?There is some Linux antivirus SW for example AVG, NOD but viruses are very rare in the Linux world and most of them are just "Proof of concept". So at this time is client antivirus SW just waste of money.
Spyware and malware - forget about it when we speaking about Linux (at this time).
    7) What browser runs on Unbreakable Linux and where do I get it from?Graphic: Firefox, Konqueror, Nautilus Text: lynx, elinks - all these are included in Linux distribution.
    8) Do I run startx to get the gui if not then what? You can start X server automaticaly during boot. This is provided by default runlevel configuration in /etc/inittab file (in this case it's run level 5). If your server has default run level 3 and you want to start X server you can log as root, and temporary change the run level to 5 by command (init 5 or telinit 5).
There is not reason for starting X server when you are using Linux machine as database server or HTTP server.
    9) How do I get help if I have a problem setting up any of the above? There is Ubreakable Linux program: http://www.oracle.com/technologies/linux/ubl-faq.pdf
And for non critical issues you can also use public linux forums like this :-)

  • Running rwthinclient on Linux

    Hello,
I have a need to run rwthinclient on Linux and from there connectiong to remote Report Server. I also need to use OSAGENT_ADDR_FILE environment variable to point to remote osagent. But since the osagent that comes with rwthinclient is a Windows executable, I can't run it on Linux and without that, rwthinclient is unable to discover the remote report server even with OSAGENT_ADDR_FILE set correctly.
Is there any way I can specify the subnet mask or force rwthinclient to discover the remote report server? The remote report server is in the same subnet but is using 255.255.248.0 as subnet mask and I think by default rwthinclient uses 255.255.255.0 as the subnet mask.
Any help or tips will be greatly appreciated.

  • Is anyone running SAP on Oracle Unbreakable Linux

    Hi all
Is there any one out there using Oracle Unbreakable Linux as the  operating system for any SAP Installations (ECC/CRM/BI etc) ?
If yes, can you share your experience in terms of system stability, compatability, support pack issues ?
    Thanks in advance
    Nagesh

There's even a note for it:
Note 997990 - Oracle Enterprise Linux / Oracle Unbreakable Linux
Since it's based on Redhat it should work, however, if there are SAP specific issues with tools and versions it may be difficult to get support, same as with CentOS - which is a "recompiled Redhat Enterprise Linux" - same code as normal $$$ Redhat Advanced Server with a different logo.
For to-become-productive systems I'd always use a supported operating system, however, I'm sure a SAP system will run on unbreakable Linux too as well as on other distributions; the statement of not supporting it may also be a political one, don't forget that Oracle and SAP are the biggest competitors!

  • Install SAP ERP 6.0 with Linux and Oracle RAC

    Hi Guru,
I want to install SAP ERP 6.0 with Linux and Oracle RAC. Is this possible?
    Where do I find information?
    Thanks,
    Hugo.

    Hello Hugo,
You can use either RAC or dataguard. On note [105047|http://service.sap.com/sap/support/notes/105047]:
    14. Data Guard
o  You can use "Physical Standby".
o  You cannot use "Logical Standby".
o  You can use Data Guard Broker.
o  You can use Maximum Performance Mode, Maximum Availability Mode and Maximum Protection Mode.
o  In the case of Maximum Availability and Maximum Protection, you must pay particular attention to a fast network connection in order to avoid performance problems.
o  Maximum Protection causes the primary database to terminate if problems occur in the standby database.
    60. Real Application Cluster (RAC)
o  You can use this feature in accordance with Note 527843.
