Runtime.exec() on a server

Hi there,
I am just wondering if it is possible to have a servlet call runtime.exec() on the server side computer to start up a new process. Thanks.

Yes it can.

  • How do I copy a file to a remote server using runtime exec - plz Help!

    Hi,
    I am trying to copy a file to a remote server using a runtime exec command as follows:
    Runtime.getRuntime().exec("scp "+getProperty(ListNewHandsetDetailsConstant.PROP_OUTPUT_PATH_JAR)+getProperty(ListNewHandsetDetailsConstant.PROP_OUTPUT_JAR_NAME)+".jar "+" "+getProperty(ListNewHandsetDetailsConstant.PROP_OUTPUT_PATH_TWO_USERNAME)+"@"+getProperty(ListNewHandsetDetailsConstant.PROP_OUTPUT_PATH_TWO_URL)+":"+getProperty(ListNewHandsetDetailsConstant.PROP_OUTPUT_PATH_TWO_JAR));
    Problem is this statement does not execute, as when I try it directly on command line, it requests for a password. Any suggestions on how I can get rid of that? I think I might have to configure my ssh_config file, but when I did some "Googling", I found the configuration settings of a ssh2_config file. I tried those (changing it to Host-based Authentication), but it didn't recognise them. Please help, this is so urgent!
    Regards,
    Simz

    Don't use Runtime.exec (or ProcessBuilder) for this. Check out JSch at JCraft (or some other Java SSH API.

  • Where to put files in using runtime.exec(run.exe)?

    I try to use the following program in EJB to call my EXE program in the J2EE server:
    runtime.exec("c:\\j2ee\\public\\exe\\run.exe temp.txt");
    In the execution of mill_turn.exe, it will open several files for read and write.
    So where to put the file temp.txt and other files the run.exe need to read?
    Looks like the J2EE server can not find them?
    Thanks!

    I got it in Java SE1.4.
    File dir=new File("c:\\j2ee\\public_html\\Mill_turn\\exe\\");
    Process proc = rt.exec(cmd,null,dir);Use above codes, I really got the right output from my external program for the first time. But , after that, the output keeps same when I change the filename in the following code:
    cmd="c:\\..\\run.exe temp.prt"
    to
    cmd="c:\\..\\run.exe Abc1.prt" , which must have different output.
    The codes for calling external program are implemented in the SessionBean of J2EE.

  • Using Runtime.exec on a Unix System

    hi,
    I have a web service which executes a command line process 'Runtime.exec(command)'. When the server starts to go on a high load I start to get "IOException: Not Enough Space" which I understand means that I am running out of swap space. No problem as I can increase the swap space to cope with demand. The problem is that I have read that when JVM attempts a fork on a Unix system it temporarily creates a new JVM with the same space requirements as the app server JVM. So if I set my app server to require 1GB memory, I am likely to need to set up swap so that it has 1GB * Number of Parallel Processes. I need to know if this is correct. Our application today does not limit the number of Runtime.exec commands which can be run in parallel and if the above is true we are going to have a problem ensuring we don't run out of memory.
    Can any one verify this or suggest other solutions to the problem?
    Thanks
    Stephen

    hi,
    Yes, very helpful jwenting! Problem is that we are working with legacy systems where we have few other options. If you can give any positive input it's not worth leaving your option at all.
    Thanks

  • Using runtime.exec to zip some files

    Hi,
    I am using runtime.exec to try to automatically zip a bunch of files on a server. However, it does not seem to be working.
    Before I execute the command, I save the zip command in a string. I then print the string to a log file, and then execute the runtime zip command. But nothing happens.
    Yet, when I copy the string from the log, and paste it in a terminal, it properly creates the zip files. So, I know I have the correct command string, it just does not seem to be working within the java application. Also, the command string uses fully qualified directories, so it is not a directory issue.
    I am using ubuntu linux.
    Any ideas?

Within Runtime.exec() any command does not run in a shell and I bet you use wild cards and/or other commands to be interpreted by a shell which will not be interpreted since there is no shell. And, since you don't mention error messages or the return code, I will also bet you don't process the Process stdout , stderr and the return code properly.
    It looks to me like you have fallen for at least two for the traps in [http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html|http://www.javaworld.com/javaworld/jw-12-2000/jw-1229-traps.html].

  • Set Path to DLLs for Runtime.exec(...)

    I have got a little server application that creates a Process of an external application. (eg Example1.exe or Example2.exe - which one is to be called is configurable via property files)
    All of these external apps rely on a couple of DLLs, that are distributed seperately from the ExampleX.exe.
    So my directory structure looks something like this:
    /Server (contains my java app)
    /Server/dll (contains the dlls)
    /Server/app (contains ExampleX.exe files)
    How do I configure my Runtime.exec(...) so that it can supply a PATH info to my DLLs?
    How about the ...exec(String command, String[] envp, File dir) call?
    -> It already works when the DLLs are in the same dir as my .exe files.
    -> I would like to avoid setting a global PATH to my DLLs in the OS.
    Has anybody already dug itself through this pile?

    Solved my problem, awarded the Dukes to myself! ;-)
    Here's what I did in case somebody else has similar probs:
    The envp Parameter didn't work for me. The Application and the DLLs were found but the Subprocess was somehow screwed up - the Threading didn't work right. (I have no clue how that could be, but whatever...)
    Anyway I could put the path to the DLLs in the PATH info of my startup script for the Java-Server. The subprocess inherits that information.
    I used relative path info there so that nobody has to fiddle around in the script when the application is moved to different directories.
    The only thing you have to do then is to set the present working directory of the subprocess to the location of the server via ...execute(String, String[], File)
    You need to supply thecomplete path to the application in the first String parameter that way but all in all this semms to be the most sensible way to do it.

  • Use of Runtime.exec

    I know that there are security concerns with making a call to the java.lang.Runtime's
    exec method, but are there any performance concerns? When an exec call is made
    by an object within the application server does the forking of a new process to
    execute the command cause a process equivalent in size to the application server
    to be generated? Our application server process is quite large, so this would
    be an expensive operation.

    The OS-level semantics of Runtime.exec are tied to JVM implementation (that's why
    it doesn't work on most releases of the MacOS for example)...
    Runtime.exec has a lot of not-so-intuitive handholding associated with it. For
    example, did you know that on most flavors of Windows JVMs, you have to read out
    of the STDOUT and STDERR streams, or the process you invoked will hang when their
    buffer fills up? JavaWorld ran an article a while back with all the details on
    this-- you can write a stream gobbler to suck up anything and send it to /dev/null
    to avoid problems.

  • Performance issue Runtime. exec("cp folder1 folder") in Linux,Weblogic.

    Using Runtime. exec() copying files from folder1 to folder2 using cp command in Linux. It will take each file copy 2 sec if we use web logic 10.3 and jrocket. if we run in Linux without web logic it takes only 0.013 sec. why it takes more time to load cp command with web logic.
    Environment
    Weblogic 10.3
    Linux 5.2
    Jrocket 1.6

    A 64 bit VM is not necessarily faster than a 32 bit one. I remember at least on suggestion that it could be slower.
    Make sure you use the -server option.
    As a guess IBM isn't necessarily a slouch when it comes to Java. It might simply be that their VM was faster. Could have used a different dom library as well.
    Could be an environment problem of course.
    Profiling the application and the machine as well might provide information.

  • Problem with Runtime.exec()

    Hi,
    I'm having a problem with Runtime.exec() . I have a batch file with debug option to FTP the desktop file to mainframe. When I executed this in Windows it's shows me the responce from the server (like ' Transfer Completed' ) for my FTP commands. But when I launch this through java it's only shows the errors not the normal responces from the server. I need this responses to confirm the proper transfer of file.
    My Java Code:
    String strCommand = "cmd.exe /c " + outdirectory + batchfilename;
    boolean bWait = true;
    Runtime r = Runtime.getRuntime();
    Process pr = r.exec(strCommand);
    BufferedInputStream bis =new BufferedInputStream(pr.getInputStream ());
    int c=0;
    /** Outlet for IO for the process **/
    while (c!=-1) {
    c=bis.read();
    /**Now wait for the process to get finished **/
    if(bWait == true){
    pr.waitFor();
    pr.destroy();
    My Batch file is :
    FTP -n -d -s:C:\IT2.cmd > C:\tIT2.log
    EXIT
    Thanks
    Sathiesh

    Ahh, you are redirecting the standard out from the ftp command to a file, therefore no output is sendt back to your java code,
    you have to redirect the stderr stream, not the stdout stream in your batch file;
    FTP -n -d -s:C:\IT2.cmd 2> C:\tIT2.log(notice the "2>" instead of ">")
    Now your batch file should direct the error stream to the log, and the standard output back to the java program.
    (I'm used to UNIX streams, not NT, but the "2>" redirection should work on NT also I guess)

    Runtime.exec is a J2SE API. It's not really specific to WLS.
    You can read about it here:
    http://java.sun.com/j2se/1.4.1/docs/api/java/lang/Runtime.html
    It looks like you are starting a JMS Server in a separate process and
    that process is crashing.
    (You could of course just use WLS's JMS Server instead :>)

  • Security issues - Runtime().exec() on RMIServer

    Hi.
    I have a RMI system where the RMIClient calls the RMIServer to start a new program - notepad.exe - at the RMIServer.
    RMIServer has a remote object that uses Runtime().exec() to start notepad.exe.
    I have the following security policy file on the RMIServer:
    grant {
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:1024-65535",
    "connect,accept";
    permission java.net.SocketPermission "*:80", "connect";
    permission java.io.FilePermission "C:\\WINNT\\system32", "read,write,execute";
    I am getting the following exception:
    java.security.AccessControlException: access denied (java.io.FilePermission <<ALL FILES>> execute)

    I am not sure if I am missing any other security configuration. Please advise.
    thankyou.
    Denny

    I think you may have the first path specified wrongly. Try making the first parameter "C:\\WINNT\\system32\\notepad.exe" see the JavaDoc for java.io.FilePermission for specifics.
