S10e problem

Hi, I own a lenovo S10e for about a little over a year now. I have been very satisfied with what it does. Never had a problem with it except the one instance of some keyboard keys failing and had to send it it. This morning when i woke up, i turned on my s10e only to be shocked at a new problem. My S10e doesn't seem to boot up properly. I can clearly see that the power is on when i hit the power button  because the three LED light is shown brightly. However, my S10e doesn't even boot into the lenovo logo. I looked up this problem on various websites and see that others have had the same problem as me.
The symptoms of such problem seems eerily similar to that of a bios problem....but the problem is that i didnt mess with the bios or anything. One night it worked fine...the next morning it does not boot up at all and stuck at a black screen. I tried the solutions of taking out the battery, unplugging, and holding the power button for 30sec several times...and it does not work.
How on earth did this problem even occur...i'm a grad student and i take very good care of my computers (everything from keyboard covers, screen covers, constant anti-cirus updates, even deep-freeze to ensure total protection) now I am trying to figure out how to salvage 4 years worth of college documents along with research docs, thesis, etc.
Has anyone have a solution to this boot up problem? I like the Lenovo quality but this is ridiculus...I took very good care of my s10e (cause its my main and only computer) and yet it breaks down like this?

well....trying that didn't work either sadly. After doing more research across forums, websites, and asking colleagues. They all looked at me and asked if I flashed a bad bios...and to which i replied...no...They all agreed this problem is very eerily similar to a bad bios...or a bad motherboard. They suggested a solution they found in another board post shown below
"You need a USB floppy drive, the GOOD (HP) BIOS file (.WPH), and a utility called Crisis Recovery. The file that can be found online is 268076.exe. This exe file formats a floppy disk with a generic BIOS.WPH. You must format the floppy disk, and then rename your bios file to BIOS.WPH and write over the one that currently exists on the floppy disk. Note that my bios was ~1MB whereas the formatted bios was ~512k. Remove the battery and the power adapter from your laptop. Plug in the USB floppy drive (with disk). While holding BOTH - windows button and 'B' (it might be Fn+B for some supposedly) plug in the power adapter. While still holding the buttons, now push the power button. For my laptop there was VERY VERY LOUD beeping at this point, and the USB floppy LED comes on (signifying reading). Now you may release the buttons. After ~2 minutes, the beeping briefly stops, and the USB floppy LED light goes off. YOU MAY NOT PULL OUT THE POWER YET. Now it is still writing the bios (beeping continues). After another ~2 minutes, the beeping stops. Now you can pull the plug and put the battery in. "
I haven't tried this solution yet and would like to know if anyone else had done something similar...im actually getting to a desperate point. I already ordered a USB 2.0 enclosure but since its from china...probably wont arrive until 30 days later (-_-). If anyone else has any experience with this problem please reply.

From the description, the Bluetooth on your S10e is working - but since it is restored to factory settings, it needs to be configured, just like the first time the computer was started.
Go to Control Panel, switch the panel to "Classic View", find the Bluetooth icon and browse through the settings. Make sure the setting is "Allow Bluetooth devices to connect to this computer" or similar in your language.
You also need to do a new pairing with each Bluetooth device - The computer is like new.
The icon on the desktop and in My Computer should appear when the first pairing is completed.

  • S10e problem no boot / Beeps

    Hi
Hope somebody could help me from Lenovo.
My 3 year old S10e Ideapad just went "black" today when it was just standing - turned on. No install process or either thing.
It when into black screen and a beep sequence. The same thing it every time it starts up.
Black screen - no boot - and :  one beep - four beeps - one beep - one beep.
    A sequence like:  1 4 1 1 (total of eight beeps)
Hope somebody can help me - I cant find any similarity with any error beep code in the forum.
It would be nice to know if its the ram, HD, board - or something else.
    Thanks in advance.

Hi and welcome, independed from beep codes ,
you could check two things at your own, its easy and you dont have nothing to loose .. you could win...
remove psu and battery .. open the bottom lid and remove memory and harddrive...
This could be helpful , if you didnt do something like that yet...
    http://www.lenovoservicetraining.com/ion/S10e/index.html
If you removed both .. insert  psu and try to start ... if beep code still remains , bad case ...your S10e is gone ...
if beep code disappear and machine would try to start it over , you are on the lucky side ...
remove psu again and try it with added memory again ... and same way with hdd ..
so you could surround the failure ... by your own...

  • Problem booting from external DVD drive on Lenovo S10e

    Hi,
I recently purchased a new Lenovo S10e ideapad, a few weeks prior to that I purchased an external DVD rewriter drive manufactured by LG, the drive works perfectly on every computer I try with the exception of the Lenovo ideapad S10e.
The thing is that the drive is being recognized and installed by the Windows XP Home Edition the S10e came with but when I try to boot a bootable CD using then drive on the S10e ideapad I almost alwasy fail to do so.
I set the S10e BIOS to have the USB CDROM as first boot device, in addition I used the F12 key to use the boot menu to choose the boot device, in 9 out 0f 10 atempts my external drive will not show in the boot menu and when choosing the enter setup option I see that the BIOS do not list it as the USB CDROM, instead it says "USB CDROM:" rather than have the drive name after it.
In the 1 time out of 10 it does work the BIOS seem to be identifying the drive and it shows in the boot menu, however I cannot work with it for a more than 1 minute without it stopped being recognized again.
The problem seems very strange to me as the drive works under the windows operating system and do not have any problem whatsoever on other computers, I have tested the external drive on my PC, another Mini Laptop from LG and a GIGABYTE Laptop (Normal one), all of which had no problems recognizing the external drive and booting from it.
I will really appreciate if I can get some help with the problem.
    Thanks.

I've had a similar issue with X61 and the external DVD drive from Lenovo.
In my case, it was the power issue. On the back of the drive, there is a small table says that the drive needs a 3.0A 5V power input. One USB 2.0 port can only provide 0.5A. I don't know if the drive has any special, low power mode, but I suspect that even if it has, 0.5A is still not enough to fully power it. I've checked the current with the multimeter, and at peak times, the drive draws 550mA. Even then, it makes a stuttering sound for a few seconds, before finally spinning the DVD disk. I've also noticed that the DVD works most of the times when it's connected to the left USB port. That may be because of how the laptop's internal power circuicity is laid out (+separate USB host controller for each 'side' of the laptop). Another thing that seems to help is to disable all 5V driven devices that the laptop uses: the wifi card, bluetooth, any additional devices connected to the USB bus / to the ethernet port / SD card port (I'm not actually sure which of the devices are 5V and which are 3.3V, but the best option is to disable all of them), maybe even remove the battery (if it's charging). Finally, the DVD drive works better if the laptop was turned on and runnig for some time, rather than it being turned on "a minute before". Also, in the BIOS, there is a setting that changes the speed of the DVD drive, but switching it to "low" didn't seem to affect the external drive (at least not before Windows boots up).

  • S10e - battery problems - first adapter went, now no charge capability

    Hi All,
I have been stymied by a problem with my S10e.  As background, I have a North American power configuration and have been using the laptop in Asia and now in the UK.
My problems started when the power adapter failed while on a trip in Asia.  I took the laptop and power adapter to a local reseller who determined that the adapter still worked, however the physical connector at the end of the lead no longer worked and was unable to provide power.  To solve this issue, I purchased a new Universal Power adapter that can take a range of input and modulate output to work for my laptop.  This has worked successfully and I am running off of AC power now.
Several weeks after the adapter problem, the battery started to die, with max capacity dropping from 98% to 70% to 44% to 10% and then to 0% over the course of a week.  This ultimately meant that I can only run on AC power as the battery is purely dead weight.
An interesting fact (that may be entirely useless), is that if I have power running to the adapter and then plug the adapter to my computer, I get a little spark.   Based on this, I plug the adapter into the computer first, then plug the adapter into AC power.
I have looked at the forum archives and the only similar solution I have found is this:
    http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-S-series-Netbooks/S9e-battery-pack-not-charging/m-p/138811#M4233
which I have tried several times to no avail.
Does anybody have any ideas on what the issue is here to save me from trying to get Lenovo's warranty service to solve the issue?
    Thanks,
    Richard.

Hi and welcome.. think the battery is gone...
If i read it correct you use a long time not the origin psu-adapter ... & let battery all time inserted ...
thats not a good solution , better if you use over a long period your computer plugged in , leave battery out..

  • Lenovo s10e Wireless problem - please help

I have recently purchased a Lenovo S10e idealpad netbook. I experience difficulties with the wireless connection at my work. It works fine at home. I have searched these forums and found many similar issues listed but no solutions?
    Let me explain.
I have two wireless networks at work, one is called "wi fi" and the other "staff_wlan"
The "wi fi" configuration is as such,
    Network name (SSID): wi fi
Connect even if this network is not broadcasting is ticked
    Network Authentication: Open
    Data encription: WEP
    Network Key: **********
    Key Index (advanced): 1
Authentication: Enable IEEE 802.1x authentications for this network is ticked
EAP type: Smart Card or other Certificate
Authenticate as computer when computer information is available is ticked
Connection: Connect when this network is in range is ticked
The "staff_wlan" configuration is as such,
    Network name (SSID): staff_wlan"
Connect even if this network is not broadcasting is ticked
    Network Authentication: WPA2
    Data encryption: AES
Authentication: EAP type: Smart Card or other Certificate
Authenticate as computer when computer information is available is ticked
Ok, to now set the scene.I have rebooted to start with a default setup. The "wi fi" network connects no problem. I have ping -t running in the background, responding happily, no timeouts. I can also browse and download email etc. Under "View Available Wireless Networks" I can see the "wi fi" network listed, full 5 bars signal, it says "Connected".  Everything 'seems' to be behaving normally.
At some point while using the machine my browsing and rdp session becomes erratic and is not stable, despite that the ping is still responding merrily. Under "View Available Networks" the "wi fi" connection now says "Automatic" and the "Connect" button is enabled. It 'seems' as though there is no network connection. I can still however browse.
At some point in the Wireless Network Connections the "wi fi" network changes to "Not Connected". The ping missed about 6 responses and then continued without missing a beat. I can also still browse, although erratic and not always reliable, despite the "Not Connected".
As I said, my other wireless connection "staff_wlan" using WPA2 and AES does not behave like this, that works perfectly fine. The reason I don't use this network is that it does not have coverage throughout our building.
My wireless network at home also works perfectly.
I have updated the Broadcom 802.11g drivers to version 5.10.38.14
I have also flashed the BIOS to version 14CN67WW
    Please help.
    thank you

Windows XP Home has limitations when it comes to connecting at corporate networks, and this may be the reason for your troubles. Of course I'm just guessing, since I don't know the setup on the server. But a simple thing like different credentials for different folders on the server is not possible in Windows XP Home, and it needs to drop the connection with the first set of credentials before it can use the new credentials.

  • Bios Problems with S10e and 14cn97ww

I updated my s10e to the new Bios version 14cn97ww (through the automatic update service from lenovo thinkvantage). Now i can´t access my Bios anymore by pressing F2 or in fact any other button during start up.
I can´t access system recovery too for that matter and splashtop doesn´t boot either (but it is activated in the lenovo quick start tool).
Windows XP boots fine and still works, but it bothers me that i can´t access Bios and Splashtop anymore. Is there any help for that problem ? I tried changing the Ram, tried removing the battery and pressing the power button and tried to downgrade the Bios which sadly didn´t work.
    Please help.

  • Ideapad S10e wireless problems on Linux

    Hi all,
I have an Ideapad S10e running SUSE and Ubuntu Linux.  With SUSE, the machine recognises wireless networks, but can only maintain a live connection for a few minutes; then I have to re-find and re-connect.  With Ubuntu, it doesn't recognise any wireless networks at all.  The wired ethernet connection works fine.
Any ideas on how to fix the wireless situation (a new Broadcom driver?) would be greatly appreciated.  I'm moderately tech-literate so this experiment with an open-source OS may have been a bad idea...

  • Problems with 3 mobile broadband on lenovo S10e - screen resolution to low ???

    Hello
This nice new Lenovo Ideapad should be on the mobile internet, but I have run into deep trouble with it.
3 mobile is installed with a Huawei  E220 usb-modem - when trying to start mobile connection the error message says that it cannot run on less than 600 times 800 screenresolution. The non-adjustabable screen resolution on the S10 is 1024  times 576.
the "3" support does not want to deal with this problem - any suggestion will be appreciated. Really a pity to have a brand new Net-book that cannot use the modem !!!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

first i changed from original-screenmode to higher screenmode (higher than  ...x600) then the included huawei software will work and i went online, then.....
....download the new software from huawei.com!!
it´s called "partner-software", some networks in europe use it already, download newest client-software for winxp.....(sept.2008) and update the hardware
    http://www.huawei.com/mobileweb/en/doc/list.do?type=-1&id=66
also for expresscard (e800) or other huawei hardware.
it´s different as the included hardware - works without this 800x600 screensize question
most of the european networks already included after installing goto: tools/options/profile managment and then import) or get the dates from your network in internet or hotline....

  • I think I've killed my partner's lenovo S10e

My partner's S10e had developed (the infamous) cracks near the hinges -on the RHS it was hanging on with duct tape...with wires visible
Then the power cable supply developed a fault (loose wire just before the plug into the computer) - computer lost all power as we were trying to copy a file off there...we ordered a new adaptor -so I decided I'd better take a look at the hinges...
Downloaded the hardware manual and followed the instructions -removed the battery, hard drive, palm rest, keyboard and keyboard bezel -no problems -  then realised that the metal hinge had snapped ...decided that would be too much like hard work to replace- so   bodged it better with tape and wood external support -  and put it all back together...again no obvious problems tried it - the windows screen flash up for a second and then it died - thought maybe it was just because the battery was flat/no power
When the new supply arrived tried it again - dead - no LED lit
The power supply cable seems ok (tested plug with multimeter)
So have removed the battery, hard drive and DIMM - no luck - so removed everything I did before and can't see any problems -the blue LED flashes for a micro second when the power is supplied (not sure if it always did that and I didn't notice before or not)
So does anyone know what the problem is? Have I killed the motherboard? Any suggestions ?

Could be most anything.  Could well be something that was damaged prior to you touching it that finally gave up.  Broken hinge suggests some less than tender care so might be that care started things toward doom.
As to what you can do, try tapping around the case and see if anything changes, if it does it might be a loose wire/connection.  Be sure the new power supply is actually putting out what it is supposed to.  Pull battery and power supply press and hold power swithc ten seconds, try the reset if there is one.

  • Using an optical mouse with my s10e

    Hi
I am not able to use any optical mouse with my s10e. Ayn driver available?
    Thank you

Hi, but that didnt solve your problem...
I have a little quest for you, to near the fences around the wild mice ...
Did you use the factory installed XP  ?
    in that case...yes..
in case of no jump to END
Did other usb devices recognized , like flashdrive/external hdd/keyboard ?
have you try it on both ports ?
    if not ...
have you activate /installed Quickstart ?,
    if yes .
. then plug in the usb mouse and
start QS for testing...external mice/keyboard  should be recognized...
    if the answer is yes...
i think its better to set the XP system to fresh factory recover ,
if you answer all upper quest with no your S10e mainboard could be broken , so you have to call for service..
    END
Did you install the system self... ?
    yes
Did you have complete XP with SP3 install ?
    yes
Did you have shrink windows with nlite ?
    yes
Did you install all drivers chipset and so on ..
Did you have yellow signs in the system device manager ?
hope that you find the solution...

  • How can I restore an IdeaPad s10e to factory settings?

Hi all! I'm new to this forum. I've been searching far and wide for a solution to my problem and I can't find a suitable answer...
I have an IdeaPad s10e (which I love) but lately there have been some weird and bizarre things going on with XP (WPA-PSK protected networks not working, programs crashing, windows opening by themselves). Before someone jumps in and say "VIRUSES!" it's not that. I always take all the necessary precautions to avoid this. What happened is that I used some StarDock programs to dress XP up and it started doing all these crazy things, I uninstalled them and it's still acting weird.
Anyway, I wanted to restore my netbook back to factory state, but since I installed Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows 7 alongside XP my F11 restore option is missing. When I installed Ubuntu the option was still there, but when i installed the cursed Windows 7 RC the loader ate up that option. Now I restored XP's bootloader and deleted the Ubuntu partition but the F11 option is still missing.
So, what can I do?...I really want to restore my netbook back to normal. This time around Windows 7 won't be an option until I can buy the full version.
So PLEASE help me. And I also read some posts about cloning the drive before using the netbook and such, but none of that will help me. Lenovo's support isn't very helpful.
    Thanks in advance!
