Safari 5 - Opening a new tab does not make it active

In Safari 4 if you open up a new tab, whether or not the "When new tab or window opens, make it active" option is checked, the new tab becomes active. In Safari 5 creating an new tab does not make it active. It doesn't matter what the option mentioned above is checked or not. I have to explicitly click on the tab to bring in in focus. Interestingly, in S5, creating a new window does bring the new window into focus.
Anyone else seeing this?

But do you have the same problem as I, i.e. that tabs cannot be opened at all without launching Top Sites when using Saft?
This problem is much more serious than the non-focus problem. Here's another report of the same issue:

Why does right clinking on link and selecting open in new tab does not work?
It opens up a blank page. The only way to make the link work is to click on the navigation bar in the new tab and press enter to reload the link.

Do you have that problem when running in the Firefox SafeMode?<br/> ''A troubleshooting mode.''<br />
1.You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the '''Shft''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut. <br />
    2. Or use the Help menu item, click on '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' while Firefox is running. <br />

The Ask Toolbar is causing that in the Firefox 3.6.13+ versions. Uninstall that extension.
There are a couple of places to check for the Ask toolbar:
    * Check the Windows Control panel for the Ask Toolbar - http://about.ask.com/apn/toolbar/docs/default/faq/en/ff/index.html#na4
    * Also check your list of extensions, you may be able to uninstall it from there - https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Uninstalling+add-ons

I just upgraded to FF 4.0 on Win7 and I noticed that when you click a link and select 'open in new tab' it copies over the correct link to the address bar but doesn't open it.

Start Firefox in [[Safe Mode]] to check if one of the add-ons is causing the problem (switch to the DEFAULT theme: Tools > Add-ons > Themes).
    * Don't make any changes on the Safe mode start window.

  • The "Open a new tab" does not work

I've just updated to Firefox 3.6.17. When I try to open up a new tab by pressing the button on the right of the existing tab, nothing happens.

Un-install the '''''Ask Toolbar''''', which has been reported to cause this problem. It is the responsibility of Ask to fix the problem with their toolbar. Click on "More system info..." to the right of your original question to see your User-agent which indicates that you have the Ask '''''Toolbar''''' installed.

  • For some unaparent reason opening a new tab does not open my home page google. Been ok for years

Now on Firefox 28.0. I got an update for Divx and installed. Following this new tabs were direct to search.conduit. I uninstalled this but now when I open new tabs I get a blank page and have to manually direct to my homepage. Previously a new tab opened automatically as my home page (Google). Starting Firefox gets me the correct homepage. How can I ensure that each new tab opens to my homepage?

Your settings might have switched when you installed DivX. You can set the new tab page to something different by the following:
    *Navigate to about:config
*Click ''I'll be careful, I promise!''
    *Search for '''browser.newtab.url'''
*Double click the string, erase ''about:newtab'' and enter the one you want (www.google.com)
    *Close down Firefox and re-open.

  • The + button or "open a new tab" does not correspond. I also tried with Ctrl+T but I can not open a new tab unless I click on a link in the existed tab. What can I do?

I have seen nothing relevant in options

  • New tab does not work

"Open a new tab" does not work, nor does File/New Tab

This issue can be caused by the Ask<i></i>.com toolbar (Tools > Add-ons > Extensions)

Hi jcatx2013, we don't really have enough information on your system to make specific suggestions...
Could you test in Firefox's Safe Mode? That's a standard diagnostic tool to bypass interference by extensions (and some custom settings). More info: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues using Safe Mode]].
You can restart Firefox in Safe Mode using
Help > Restart with Add-ons Disabled
In the dialog, click "Start in Safe Mode" (''not'' Reset)
    Any difference?

  • Safari (OSX 10.9) new tab does not work

I opened Safari after the Mavericks upgrade and, initially, it looked fine. Now when I open it, it does not work. I press command-T and a new tab does not appear; I press command-N and a new window does not appear. If I quit Safari and reopen it, the tabs show up. So the UI is not reflecting the input. I've removed all non-Apple internet plug-ins and I've removed all extensions, moved all plists to my desktop and I still have this behavior.

OK, so apple support had me reset my SMC amd PRAM. In resetting PRAM, I was able to run Disk Utility and repair permissions too. And it worked. Tabs and new windows show up and it's all responsive.
