Safari 6 gets stuck; won't scroll or scrolls to show blank area

I've been having trouble with Safari 6 since upgrading to Mountain Lion several days ago.  The symptom is that after using Safari for a while, I'll go to a Web site and the page will load, but it won't scroll. Sometimes when that happens I can't click on links or controls either.  Other times, the page does scroll, but rather than show the rest of the page, Safari shows empty space of the page's background color.   Refreshing the page doesn't help, nor does closing the window and visiting the URL again, but if I open a new tab or window and go to some completely different site, that page usually works okay. Once a site gets "stuck", I have to quit and restart Safari to get it to scroll again.
I've disabled all extensions and the problem still occurs.  It's erratic, though, and seems to happen more frequently on some sites (metafilter.com) than others (cnn.com).  It sometimes seems that opening a set of tabs (with "Open in Tabs") makes it more likely to happen.
I am working on a Web development project now, and am using Safari's JavaScript debugger and Web inspector frequently, if that might have something to do with it.
This is driving me nuts. It's disruptive to my development workflow, and I'd hate to have to turn to Chrome or Firefox for the work.  Can anyone suggest some diagnostic tricks to try to figure out what's going on -- or, better yet, a solution?
Thanks!

@kbern, you can actually debug using Safari 6.0 inspector.  Apparently following your link, it seems that on Safari 6.0, enables uncaught exceptions by default.
All you have to do is untick it for the pages to load properly.  I have the same exact problem as jgarbers.  I was wondering why everyone is saying safari 6.0 was so fast and smooth, while I'm having rendering problerms.  Turns out not everyone opens the developer menu.  Only people like us who work debugging pages use that.
So the solution, if you want the Developer Menu on always, you just untick the break on uncaught exceptions, and your pages should load properly.

  • Safari keeps getting stuck!

    Hi everyone
Safari browser(latest version) on my macbook pro retina(mavericks) keeps getting stuck on certain websites such as cnet, forbes etc. I am unable to open some of these websites at all as it gets stuck and only solution will be to force quit safari.
    Please any help or suggestions?
    Otherwise its a beautiful machine.

    1. This procedure is a diagnostic test. It changes nothing, for better or worse, and therefore will not, in itself, solve the problem. But with the aid of the test results, the solution may take a few minutes, instead of hours or days.
Don't be put off merely by the seeming complexity of these instructions. The process is much less complicated than the description. You do harder tasks with the computer all the time.
    2. If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data before doing anything else. The backup is necessary on general principle, not because of anything in the test procedure. Backup is always a must, and when you're having any kind of trouble with the computer, you may be at higher than usual risk of losing data, whether you follow these instructions or not.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
    3. Below are instructions to run a UNIX shell script, a type of program. As I wrote above, it changes nothing. It doesn't send or receive any data on the network. All it does is to generate a human-readable report on the state of the computer. That report goes nowhere unless you choose to share it. If you prefer, you can read it yourself without disclosing the contents to me or anyone else.
You should be wondering whether you can believe me, and whether it's safe to run a program at the behest of a stranger. In general, no, it's not safe and I don't encourage it.
In this case, however, there are a couple of ways for you to decide whether the program is safe without having to trust me. First, you can read it. Unlike an application that you download and click to run, it's transparent, so anyone with the necessary skill can verify what it does.
You may not be able to understand the script yourself. But variations of the script have been posted on this website thousands of times over a period of years. The site is hosted by Apple, which does not allow it to be used to distribute harmful software. Any one of the millions of registered users could have read the script and raised the alarm if it was harmful. Then I would not be here now and you would not be reading this message.
Nevertheless, if you can't satisfy yourself that these instructions are safe, don't follow them. Ask for other options.
    4. Here's a summary of what you need to do, if you choose to proceed:
☞ Copy a line of text in this window to the Clipboard.
☞ Paste into the window of another application.
☞ Wait for the test to run. It usually takes a few minutes.
☞ Paste the results, which will have been copied automatically, back into a reply on this page.
The sequence is: copy, paste, wait, paste again. You don't need to copy a second time. Details follow.
    5. You may have started the computer in "safe" mode. Preferably, these steps should be taken in “normal” mode, under the conditions in which the problem is reproduced. If the system is now in safe mode and works well enough in normal mode to run the test, restart as usual. If you can only test in safe mode, do that.
    6. If you have more than one user, and the one affected by the problem is not an administrator, then please run the test twice: once while logged in as the affected user, and once as an administrator. The results may be different. The user that is created automatically on a new computer when you start it for the first time is an administrator. If you can't log in as an administrator, test as the affected user. Most personal Macs have only one user, and in that case this section doesn’t apply. Don't log in as root.
    7. The script is a single long line, all of which must be selected. You can accomplish this easily by triple-clicking anywhere in the line. The whole line will highlight, though you may not see all of it in the browser window, and you can then copy it. If you try to select the line by dragging across the part you can see, you won't get all of it.

Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    8. Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Click anywhere in the Terminal window and paste by pressing command-V. The text you pasted should vanish immediately. If it doesn't, press the return key.
    9. If you see an error message in the Terminal window such as "Syntax error" or "Event not found," enter
    exec bash
and press return. Then paste the script again.
    10. If you're logged in as an administrator, you'll be prompted for your login password. Nothing will be displayed when you type it. You will not see the usual dots in place of typed characters. Make sure caps lock is off. Type carefully and then press return. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you make three failed attempts to enter the password, the test will run anyway, but it will produce less information. In most cases, the difference is not important. If you don't know the password, or if you prefer not to enter it, press the key combination control-C or just press return  three times at the password prompt. Again, the script will still run.
If you're not logged in as an administrator, you won't be prompted for a password. The test will still run. It just won't do anything that requires administrator privileges.
    11. The test may take a few minutes to run, depending on how many files you have and the speed of the computer. A computer that's abnormally slow may take longer to run the test. While it's running, there will be nothing in the Terminal window and no indication of progress. Wait for the line

to appear. If you don't see it within half an hour or so, the test probably won't complete in a reasonable time. In that case, close the Terminal window and report what happened. No harm will be done.
    12. When the test is complete, quit Terminal. The results will have been copied to the Clipboard automatically. They are not shown in the Terminal window. Please don't copy anything from there. All you have to do is start a reply to this comment and then paste by pressing command-V again.
At the top of the results, there will be a line that begins with the words "Start time." If you don't see that, but instead see a mass of gibberish, you didn't wait for the "Process completed" message to appear in the Terminal window. Please wait for it and try again.
If any private information, such as your name or email address, appears in the results, anonymize it before posting. Usually that won't be necessary.
    13. When you post the results, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "You are not authorized to post." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the test results on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.
    14. This is a public forum, and others may give you advice based on the results of the test. They speak only for themselves, and I don't necessarily agree with them.

  • Safari windows get stuck until Exposé

    Hi
Every now and again, I am surfing around in Safari, and suddenly I can't click the close, minimise and zoom buttons, and the window won't move around. I can still use the content of the page perfectly well though. If I press any of the Exposé keys, it comes into the organiser-expose-thing from the edge of the screen, with just a bit poking out. When I deactivate Expose, it goes back to the edge of the screen, and the stuck window is gone. I can now drag the window perfectly.
It seems like it is making an doppelgänger of itself and then hiding away, but I would like to how to stop it happening, and, if possible, why it happens at all.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Mounting Windows shared disk - getting stuck; won't eject?

I'm sharing the C: on my windows 2000 server machine, on the network. Most of the time I can mount and eject the volume just fine.
However, sometimes it gets "stuck". Meaning, I can mount it once, then eject it, but when I try to mount it again, i get the ?-mark over the drive. I go to relaunch Finder, and the volume is still there, but it won't eject. I can browse it still, but every action I try seems to not cause it to eject. I have to reboot to get it to clear off.
Is there a way to force a volume to eject? Am I mounting my drive wrong in the first place? Is there a proper way to eject a volume? Thanks.

    bump.
it seems to do it more after i wake the macbook from sleeping...

  • Slideshow Module: Slideshow getting stuck, won't auto-advance

We use Lightroom 4.3 in our studio to show our work to clients.  One of our slideshows is based on a smart collection of all 5-star rated images.  Before a client comes in, we'll click on the smart collection to load the images, go to the Slideshow module and use a preset we've created that has our desired background color, fade time, etc.  and hit "play".
Recently this particular combination is not working properly.  After a random number of images, the slideshow simply stops advancing and appears to be "stuck".  If I hit the right arrow key on the keyboard to advance to the next image, nothing happens.  However, if I hit the right arrow key twice, skipping the next image and going to a second image, the slideshow will continue.  It will then get stuck again after a few slides.  The only thing that I can figure is that by hitting the arrow key twice, I'm skipping a "bad" image that doesn't want to load.  I can't tell what image that might be.  The images that are held up on the screen seem to be different each time, because we are playing the slides in a random order.
Is there a way that I can figure out if there are some kind of "problem" images that cause the slideshow to hang?  Has anyone else had this problem?  Or does anyone have a different theory (other than the "bad" image theory) of what might be going on here?
Updating from 4.2 to 4.3 did not solve the problem.
Optimizing the catalog did not solve the problem.
Using a different slideshow preset does not solve the problem.
Using a different set of images DOES prevent the problem from occurring, but of course, I need to show these images. (Ex: a different smart collection that doesn't contain all the same images.)
    OS: Windows Vista
Images: combination of CR2 raw, PSD, and jpeg
No error message.  Slideshow simply gets stuck.
No recent changes to computer or software that I am aware of.
I just had a thought.  I am going to go play the slides NOT in random order and see if I can find any pattern.  In the meantime, any help is greatly appreciated.

Okay, I answered my own question.  My thought about unchecking "Random Order" and then playing the slides quickly showed me the problem files.  There were a handful of files that had a black circle with an exclamation point in them.  This circle was where the question mark normally goes if LR can't find a file.  When I clicked on the exclamation point, it said LR could not access the file, or something like that.  I simply changed the rating on those images from 5 stars down to 4, which effectively removed them from my smart collection without having to delete them from my catalog.  At some point, I'll go back and figure out what the problem was with those files, but at least my slideshow is back up and running!
The funny thing is that I've been google searching this problem for weeks with no results.  Then I finally post in the forum and while typing the question, I figure out my own answer.  Go figure.  But I thought I'd post this up in case someone else has this issue, because there's NOTHING about this anywhere else I could find. :-)

  • HT4623 Did new update, now when I open Facebook in safari, it's stuck on notification scroll down

I just completed the latest update for my iPad. Now when I go into Facebook on safari, the notification drop down won't move and it acts like its trying to load the page. I've tried restarting iPad and logging out of Facebook.  This happened immediately after update

I really foreperson the viewing on safari vs. the app. But, I tried shutting down and restarting a couple more times and it finally straightened itself out.

  • Safari - new pages "stuck"

I have a very unusual problem - several times a day, Safari (5.0.5) seems to get stuck when I click on a link. There are no spinning beach balls or any crashes - it simply seems like the internet is slow.
Quite by accident, I discovered that when I open a new window, the page becomes unstuck immediately. In the past, I waited for up to 1-2 minutes for a new website to load before discovering this "fix".
Does anyone know why this is...and if there is a more-efficient remedy? Thanks!

I came across this solution yesterday afternoon, and it seems to be working for me. <http://appletoolbox.com/2010/09/fix-safari-slowness-stalled-page-loads-by-disabl ing-dns-prefetching/>
It has to do with the DNS servers that your computer goes to for "prefetching" a page. I changed the servers that my office ISP uses (comcast) and the pages seem to load much better now.
    The article says:
a variety of factors can cause Safari for Mac OS X to slowly load pages, open new tabs and windows, and perform other operations.
Apple has now posted a knowledge base article titled “Safari 5.0.1 or later: Slow or partial webpage loading, or webpage cannot be found,” which lists two potential fixes for the issue.
The first echoes our previously posted fix for the issue, switching DNS servers from those generated by your ISP to those offered by OpenDNS. To do so:
Open System Preferences and click “Network”
Select your connection method (AirPort, Ethernet, etc.)
Enter the following items in the “DNS Server” field:  208.67.222.222, 208.67.220.220
    Click Apply
Or you can try Google’s public DNS servers: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4."

  • My apple wont turn on.  it gets stuck on the gray screen with the spinning wheel and the apple on the screen

My macbook air turns on but not completely, it gets stuck on the grays screen.   It shows an apple an a spinning wheel and that is as far as it gets.  sometimes I can get to an screen that shows macintosh hd and i clicked on it and the computer turned off.

Take each of these steps that you haven't already tried. Stop when the problem is resolved.
    Step 1
The first step in dealing with a startup failure is to secure the data. If you want to preserve the contents of the startup drive, and you don't already have at least one current backup, you must try to back up now, before you do anything else. It may or may not be possible. If you don't care about the data that has changed since the last backup, you can skip this step.
There are several ways to back up a Mac that is unable to start. You need an external hard drive to hold the backup data.
         a. Start up from the Recovery partition, or from a local Time Machine backup volume (option key at startup.) When the OS X Utilities screen appears, launch Disk Utility and follow the instructions in this support article, under “Instructions for backing up to an external hard disk via Disk Utility.” The article refers to starting up from a DVD, but the procedure in Recovery mode is the same. You don't need a DVD if you're running OS X 10.7 or later.
    b. If Step 1a fails because of disk errors, and no other Mac is available, then you may be able to salvage some of your files by copying them in the Finder. If you already have an external drive with OS X installed, start up from it. Otherwise, if you have Internet access, follow the instructions on this page to prepare the external drive and install OS X on it. You'll use the Recovery installer, rather than downloading it from the App Store.
    c. If you have access to a working Mac, and both it and the non-working Mac have FireWire or Thunderbolt ports, start the non-working Mac in target disk mode. Use the working Mac to copy the data to another drive. This technique won't work with USB, Ethernet, Wi-Fi, or Bluetooth.
    d. If the internal drive of the non-working Mac is user-replaceable, remove it and mount it in an external enclosure or drive dock. Use another Mac to copy the data.
    Step 2
If the startup process stops at a blank gray screen with no Apple logo or spinning "daisy wheel," then the startup volume may be full. If you had previously seen warnings of low disk space, this is almost certainly the case. You might be able to start up in safe mode even though you can't start up normally. Otherwise, start up from an external drive, or else use the technique in Step 1b, 1c, or 1d to mount the internal drive and delete some files. According to Apple documentation, you need at least 9 GB of available space on the startup volume (as shown in the Finder Info window) for normal operation.
    Step 3
Sometimes a startup failure can be resolved by resetting the NVRAM.
    Step 4
If you use a wireless keyboard, trackpad, or mouse, replace or recharge the batteries. The battery level shown in the Bluetooth menu item may not be accurate.
    Step 5
If there's a built-in optical drive, a disc may be stuck in it. Follow these instructions to eject it.
    Step 6
Press and hold the power button until the power shuts off. Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed to start up, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards. Use a different keyboard and/or mouse, if those devices are wired. If you can start up now, one of the devices you disconnected, or a combination of them, is causing the problem. Finding out which one is a process of elimination.
    Step 7
If you've started from an external storage device, make sure that the internal startup volume is selected in the Startup Disk pane of System Preferences.
Start up in safe mode. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start and run than normal, and some things won’t work at all, including wireless networking on certain Macs.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know the login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
When you start up in safe mode, it's normal to see a dark gray progress bar on a light gray background. If the progress bar gets stuck for more than a few minutes, or if the system shuts down automatically while the progress bar is displayed, the startup volume is corrupt and the drive is probably malfunctioning. In that case, go to Step 10. If you ever have another problem with the drive, replace it immediately.
If you can start and log in in safe mode, empty the Trash, and then open the Finder Info window on the startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) Check that you have at least 9 GB of available space, as shown in the window. If you don't, copy as many files as necessary to another volume (not another folder on the same volume) and delete the originals. Deletion isn't complete until you empty the Trash again. Do this until the available space is more than 9 GB. Then restart as usual (i.e., not in safe mode.)
If the startup process hangs again, the problem is likely caused by a third-party system modification that you installed. Post for further instructions.
    Step 8
Launch Disk Utility in Recovery mode (see Step 1.) Select the startup volume, then run Repair Disk. If any problems are found, repeat until clear. If Disk Utility reports that the volume can't be repaired, the drive has malfunctioned and should be replaced. You might choose to tolerate one such malfunction in the life of the drive. In that case, erase the volume and restore from a backup. If the same thing ever happens again, replace the drive immediately.
This is one of the rare situations in which you should also run Repair Permissions, ignoring the false warnings it may produce. Look for the line "Permissions repair complete" at the end of the output. Then restart as usual.
    Step 9
If the startup device is an aftermarket SSD, it may need a firmware update and/or a forced "garbage collection." Instructions for doing this with a Crucial-branded SSD were posted here. Some of those instructions may apply to other brands of SSD, but you should check with the vendor's tech support.
    Step 10
Reinstall the OS. If the Mac was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you’ll need the Apple ID and password you used to upgrade.
    Step 11
Do as in Step 9, but this time erase the startup volume in Disk Utility before installing. The system should automatically restart into the Setup Assistant. Follow the prompts to transfer the data from a Time Machine or other backup.
    Step 12
This step applies only to models that have a logic-board ("PRAM") battery: all Mac Pro's and some others (not current models.) Both desktop and portable Macs used to have such a battery. The logic-board battery, if there is one, is separate from the main battery of a portable. A dead logic-board battery can cause a startup failure. Typically the failure will be preceded by loss of the settings for the startup disk and system clock. See the user manual for replacement instructions. You may have to take the machine to a service provider to have the battery replaced.
    Step 13
If you get this far, you're probably dealing with a hardware fault. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider.

  • JMS Messages getting stuck in queues

    Hi,
I am facing this peculiar issue with queue messages not getting picked up.
Application Architecture: There is 1 JMS queue ( which resides in WLDomain1 with in a Unix Box) and there are 2 windows boxes having 2 weblogic domains each with 3 instances of MDB deployed on each of the domains. So total of 12 consumers (2 Box * 2 Domain * 3 Instances of MDB) listens to the JMS queue.
Issue: After bringing everything up I am able to see 12 consumer count listening to the queue. But when I run the application which writes total of 13 messages in the queue only 7 of them are getting processed and 6 messages are always getting stuck in the queues. Interestingly this 7 messages are mostly getting processed by consumers with in the same windows box. And the selection of windows box is completely random. To confirm whether both the windows boxes are configured fine I tried to test them individually and it works fine individually, the problem happens only if I bring up both the boxes together.
Another observation is, if I bring down the non working domains, the pending messages start getting processed by the working domains. It gives an impression that the non working domains seem to lock the messages for processing but doesn't actually process it. Only when I bring down the domains it releases this lock.
Below is the JMS Life cycle events I captured from log files :
    1. Start domain1 in WIN Box1

    Hi,
The problem may be conflicting names in your configuration. To ensure proper operation of WL Security, JMS, JTA, and JDBC, make sure that (A) each domain has a unique name, and (B) no two WebLogic servers have the same name (even if in two different domains).
To ensure a more even distribution of messages, either simply send more than a token amount messages (eg, a hundred or so, rather than just 12), or configure a custom connection factory on the domain that hosts the queue, reduce MessagesMaximum on the connection factory to 1, and then modify each MDB to refer to the custom connection factory. The MessagesMaximum setting controls the number of messages that can be pre-pushed (pipelined) to a single asynchronous consumer.
For more information see "Best Practices for JMS Beginners and Advanced Users" in the latest versions of the JMS admin guide, and "JMS Performance & Tuning Check List" in the WebLogic Performance and Tuning guide.

  • Very frustrated....ADE keeps getting stuck on authorizing document

Anyone know what to do to fix this problem?  It was working fine until a week ago and now every time I try to
download a book from my library, it downloads it and then gets stuck on "authorizing document" and never goes anywhere else.

are the library books in right format. e-pub or pdf . are they allowed to copy. uninstall and re-install yet ? worked for me. you have to watch the librarys formats though and check authors rights. have to have ade username and password set before you install it or it gets weird.

  • Word to PDF conversion gets stuck at 10%. Acrobat 8 Professional.

I have Adobe Acrobat 8 Professional on Windows 7. I cannot convert Word Docs (office 2003 Professional) to PDFs. The conversion gets stuck at 10%.
    What should I do?

Are you saving your MS Word doc as a PDF from within Word?
Try doing that, also some versions of Word had a PDF Maker button.
Once you have the Word file saved as a PDF, you should be able to open it in Acrobat 8.

  • Quick Launch Desktop get stuck when scrolling Mavericks apps

Is just that, when scrolling horizontally to go to my other apps in the quicklaunch desktop, it get's so stcuked, that event splits the screen in half icons from the left side, and half icons from the right side. Anyone? (MBP 13' mid 2012)

I may not have explained exactly...so basically when i go to the main desktop screen, and open a program or use the dock, it sometimes gets stuck in show mode. Then when i go back to the safari full screen app for instance, the dock stays up, with the latest program highlighted. In order to get the dock to go away, i need to go back to the desktop and hover over the dock again for it to hide.
I really hope someone else is experiencing this because its very annoying and I want apple to fix it quickly

  • Adobe Flash Player Installer gets stuck "downloading" and won't proceed

I'm on Mac OSX 10.10.1, using Safari and Chrome as browsers. I recently upgraded to Yosemite and since then have gotten error messages that I don't have Flash installed. When I download the Installer, it gets stuck and won't move past "30%" downloaded. I've left it for hours, and it is still at 30 when I return. Is there a permissions issue that I could play with to allow it to continue installing? Any suggestions for what to try to get this installed?
I've been able to download the installer itself, but the problem comes after I double-click "Install Adobe Flash Player." See screenshot below.
This is where it gets stuck:

    Use the offline installer http://fpdownload.macromedia.com/pub/flashplayer/latest/help/install_flash_player_osx.dmg
