Safari balky only on Apple Discussions

I use Safari almost exclusively and generally it works fine. It seems to me that recently I am having to reload many of my hits on Discussions which just spin (or don't even spin) and don't load. Anyone else having this problem?
ds

yes - lots of us.
there was a reply to a question from me on this board saying it was an apple discussions software problem & would hopefully be fixed soon. Apple are certainly aware of the problem.
I have found that logging out to browse here makes it much faster, & have fallen into the bad habit of double clicking every link - which does seem effective ( not if opening in a new tab, of course).
worst is questions/answers not being sent - refresh doesn't work for those & I often have to copy my reply - go back - hit reply once more - paste - & try again.

  • Safari quits only on one Discussions forum

I have a weird thing happening. When I go to my bookmark for Apples Logic Pro discussions forum, Safari immediately quits.
This also happens when I navigate there from Apples home page, so I don't think it's bookmark related...
I can get to any other Apple discussions forum fine (from Safari), but not the Logic Pro forum.
Firefox gets there without a problem. What should I be looking at as a possible cause?
    Thanks in advance...

    Hi Jim
    Glad the suggestion worked.
The cache is really a useless feature for those using a highspeed internet connection. It was originally designed to facilitate page loading when using dial-up. Firefox and some of the other browsers give the option for deactivating it; Safari doesn't. for the Safari cache, there are a number of external ways to do deactivate the cachei. I used Safari Enhancer.
The downside of deactivating the Safari cache is losing the ability to upload images. So for uploads I use Firefox.
Otherwise, I suggest you empty the cache each time before using Safari .

  • Safari (only?) errors with Apple Discussion Pages

I have been having connection problems with my ISP -- intermittent inability to load web pages or Widget updates, etc., or just very slow loading. It is extremely intermittent: over the space of an hour or two it can go from full speed cable to near zero to flat out dead.
Complicating things greatly is that sometimes, during the slow-but-not-dead periods, Safari refuses to load Apple Discussions pages at all, displaying error messages with or without an number number, but always saying the connection was lost. Sometimes this is after a minute or so of trying to load the page, which I attribute to the slowness of the connection, but other times it is immediate. When this happens, retry or going to another page with a link back to the first page & trying that continues to get the error immediately.
IOW, Safari won't even try to reload the page. I have tried emptying the cache, but it doesn't help. Other pages will load, but slowly.
At this point, I can get the page to load by copying the URL into Internet Explorer, so I know the page is available & the connection, although slow, is capable of sending the page to my computer.
Does anyone have an explanation for this behavior? Or better yet, a way to convince Safari to try to reload the page?

  • Do I have to login every time I access Apple discussions using Safari

Is there a way to stay logged in on my Apple ID on the Apple website.
Each time I launch Safari and go to Apple Discussions I have to manually login.
I seem to remember in the past I didn't need to do this, maybe on older OS X, maybe I've changed a pref inadvertently.
    iMac 1.8 GHz PowerPC G5   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   1.25 GB RAM

Just to add to the information already provided:
I seem to remember in the past I didn't need to do this, ...
Yes, that was correct. In an older version of the Discussions forum you used to not have to login all the time, but the forum administrators changed things about 12-18 months ago.

  • "Apple Discussions" links fail in Safari 5.0.3

In Safari when I try linking to a topic from within any Apple Discussions forum, or try any other links from within a forum, I get a blank page. No such problem in Firefox (from where I'm making this post).
Not a disaster, given that I have Firefox, but puzzling.

    Hi Duncan...
From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Click: Show Cookies
    Delete all Apple cookies.
Quit Safari (Command + Q) then relaunch Safari.
Emptying the Safari cache more often may help also. Command + Option + E
If nothing above helped, Reset Safari from the Safari menu bar. Select the top 7 buttons. Click Reset.

  • Safari 4.1.3 issue with Apple Discussions

Several times yesterday and this morning, and continually this evening, I have got the redirect URL below when trying to get to Apple Discussions (index page, or directly to any of the forums I frequent) using Safari 4.1.3 on my iBook G4, running Tiger (10.4.11).
    http://discussions.apple.com/category.jspa?categoryID=97
"We're sorry, Apple Discussions is temporarily unavailable. We'll be back soon.
    Until then, please visit http://www.apple.com/support"
(This one was collected just now.)
Yet, as is obvious from this post, and a couple I've just made in the numbers '09 forum, Apple Discussions is not 'temporarily unavailable' using Firefox.
And Safari 5.0.3 on the iMac (intel, running Leopard v10.5.8) also connects successfully.
I've cleared Safari's cache, but haven't taken any further steps yet.
    Anyone else experiencing anything similar?
    Regards,
    Barry

Deleting cookies coming from discussions and restarting Safari solved the issue.

  • Safari won't reply to Apple discussions

I've been making much use of Apple Discussions recently, however when I open that in Safari on my iMac (Snow Leopard) when I try to reply to the last, or any post I click Reply and nothing happens. So I have had to switch back to Firefox as my Default browser. Any ideas? Thanks.

    Hi Bernard ..
From your Safari menu bar click Safari > Empty Cache
Now back to the menu bar click Safari > Reset Safari
Deselect all the boxes except for Remove All Website Data
    Then click Reset.
Quit and relaunch Safari, login to Apple Support Communities then try the Reply button.

  • Funny - Safari won't let me log in Apple Discussions forums.

Funny - Safari won't let me log in Apple Discussions forums. I need to log on with Firefox to wright this massage.
Do you guys have any clue why I can't log on with Safari?
My current version of Safari is 5.0.3

    Good advice, Dixmaxim.
If you still have problems after getting rid of the cookies,
check back to see if your real name or password has any accented letters,
like ø, etc. If so, replace with un-accented letters. Just a thought.
This has been happening for several years now, and it is very embarrassing.
I would have thought it would be fixed by now.

  • Safari opens only these forums and other Apple pages?

I had to remove the router from my iMac last night, so I set the Network panel to work with the DSL modem only. After doing so, Safari only connets and opens the Apple forums and other Apple pages, nothing else. Also, Sotware Update won't work.
I have reinstalled the router, and right now the Network panel indicates that the network is working, and that the computer is connected to the Internet via the router and modem. It does not matter how many times I "Create A new Location" and then apply it. Safari won't work with any of the bookmarks, except for the Apple bookmarks.
I restarted the computer from the (backup) external hard drive and ran Safari from there, and it works fine. However, I followed the advise of an Apple Technician on a chat, and was told that I could drag Safari from the external HD to the internal, and replace Safari with it. I did so, and then restarted from the internal HD, placed the Safari alias in the trash, created a new alias and put it in the Dock, and used Safari. But Safari is having the same problems.
It seems that both Safari, and Software Update follow the same path from the computer to the Internet, so i am trying to figure with files in the System have screwed-up.
Do you have any ideas of what the problem with Safari may be?

I will respond to myself to keep you informed of the progress with my problems and Safari/Software Update:
    1. I created another account, but again there was no change with Safari nor with Software Update. I am certain that the problem is related to Software, perhaps Preferences and such.
    2. However, since I don't know enough about OS X to mess around with it, I decided to start from the LaCie external HD as I did before, and proceeded to perform a "Smart Update" with SuperDuper. Before the Smart Update, I printed the last unread e-mail in the mailboxes, since I know that SuperDuper would erase those. I backed the iMac's HD a couple of days ago, before encountering all of these problems with Safari, so all the files and applications are fresh and in good order.
    3. I am replaying to myself using Safari, after I restarted from the iMac's internal HD. Safari now works as well as ever, and I am certain that Sotfware Update will work fine, too.
I hope that Apple takes notes on the problems several of us are having with Safari. Just for the records: This version of Safari is the latest in Mac OS 10.4.2. A week or so ago, I upgraded OS 10.3.9 to OS 10.4, and had quite a lot of trouble with the Network panel. Regardless of the settings to use a router and modem, or jut the DSL modem, a connection to the server could not be established, and whenever such connection was possible, Safari would only open the Apple pages, and Software Update would not work.
I ended-up erasing the hard drive and reinstalling Mac OS 10.4 three more times, for a total of four, before I could get Safari and Software Update to work. On the last attempt, the only difference from the other attempts was that this time I didn't dare use Safari until every little update was installed by Software Update. Now, please note that the problems I had then were not exactly the same, since this time Network Diagnostics passed the connection test with flying colors. The previous times, a connection could not be established 99% of the time. But even though the problems were not exactly the same, I believe that whatever happens, to Safari, FireFox (FireFox was not working), and Software Update is related to whatever path these applications follow toward an Internet connection.

  • Copy and Paste to Apple Discussions.

    Hello,
Could someone tell me why when I copy then paste this text it results in the first characters of every line disappearing? At least that is what appears to be happening here. I say appears because I have already copied and pasted the below AppleScript and on every line there are characters missing from the beginning. My uncertainty arises after that though because when I type text after the pasted material it also seems to be missing the first characters. I have a screenshot here of the entered text (after the pasting) highlighted while being entered due to spelling and as you see the highlighted portion seems to start before the text enter box. Note: This has made me wonder if the text will show after posting.
I should also let you know that I tried to paste the material to TextEdit and had no problem there. Furthermore I tried to copy the text from TextEdit and paste here in Apple Discussions but received the same result of missing characters. At the very end I copied and pasted something from Notes. It worked fine - no missing characters.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.
This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
    Step 1
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.
Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”
While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.
Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?
After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.
*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.
    Step 2
The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled in OS X 10.9 or earlier, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

  • E're sorry, Apple Discussions are temporarily unavailable.

Sorry for posting in this forum but at present I can only access discussions through the 'Popular Discussions Forums' link at the bottom of the support homepage.
Basically for the past few days, I've received the message "We're sorry, Apple Discussions are temporarily unavailable" when I click on the Discussions link under the support tab. I've emptied the cache and reset Safari but with no joy.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

    Hi Darren & Adam!
It's not your systems that are at fault.
Everyone is experiencing down times here.
There have been more problems than usual, with the Apple Discussions site for the past week or so.
I'm sure the Sysops are aware of this, and are working very hard to correct it.
    Hang in there!

  • Help, please with navigating Apple Discussions

Having installed iOS 8.1 on my iPhone 5c, iPad 3 and iPad 4, it's bad enough that the text size and color on this support site has become so small (tiny, really) and so faint (would  like to get my hands on whoever thought light grey was a good idea), now I'm constantly frustrated when attempting to search for a subject, return to a subject category after reading a thread, etc.  For instance, I want to look at problems with Safari. So I choose ipad>using iPad>Safari (chose Safari from the subject headings that one can scroll through at the top of the list of topics)>read a post. But when I try to return to the list of Safari-related threads by choosing the Back button, instead it goes back to the combined subject list and have to scroll across to the Safari subject category again, which again starts from the beginning of the list of topics, not to where I left off gong down the list. I tried the other possibilities (return to Using IPad, etc.), no joy. Am I missing something here? I just want to search for a subject, read applicable threads, and when done with a thread return to the previous page at the spot on that page where I left off.
I have been using these discussions long enough to remember when the postings were organized logically and after reading a thread, hitting the Back button returned to the exact spot I'd been linking from to get there. It seems like each "upgrade" to the site has made it less and less logical functionally. Simultaneous to those changes has been the inability of Safari to return to ANY previously accessed webpage at the spot where I left off reading, instead going back to the top of said webpage instead.
IF someone can show me the error in my thought process here I would be only too happy to be proven wrong.

Demo, All the clearing and resetting isn't fixing the problem. Out of curiosity, after reading your post, I checked out the issue on my MacBook Pro, and Safari has the same problem of not returning to the previous page under the selected catagory Safari, for instance, from which I had clicked the link to read the particular thread. I see another poster is having the same problem. Can't imagine why it's working for you.
I just now also tested the problem with the Mercury browser, and had the same problem! So it appears it may not be a Safari problem but rather an Apple web design problem. Looks like it's time for an email to Apple Feedback, though  frankly, I don't hold out much hope for help from that avenue as Apple of late seems intent on marching to the beat of their own drums rather than listening to their customers.
As to how the site as a whole is designed, bottom line, it's Apple's responsibility to test and give their stamp of approval before anything is implemented, so while they may have subbed out their website design, the buck stops on Apple's desk for any problems.
I spent my early-adult years (many years ago) as an executive secretary, and I can say that if you can set up and use efficiently a filing system for piles of paperwork you develop an inherent understanding of how data bases and Search functions should work. There's just no logic to this website any more! I can only guess that the designers never had  to do any "real" hands-on filing.
Re keeping multiple tabs open, I find that leaving more than three or four running at a time slows Safari way down, so I tend to limit open tabs.  But it's an interesting idea for following Apple discussions if you spend a lot of time here. I'm not using this site as much as I used to as it's become just so annoying to use on so many levels.

  • I Have 1 Question About The Apple Discussion Message Boards?

I Think Apple.com & Apple Discussion Message Boards needs to come up with an Apple App for Apple iPhone & Apple iPod Touch 1 reason is cause I Try to go on The Apple Discussion Message Boards on My Safari on My Apple iPhone 4 32GB from Verizon Wireless & The Internet is very Slow on there so maybe if Apple.com & The Apple Discussion Message Boards had an App Specialty for The Apple Discussion Message Boards for Apple iPhone 4 & Apple iPod Touch maybe then The Apple Discussion Message Boards will Run more Faster cause My Apps for My Apple iPhone 4 32GB From Verizon Wireless are always faster then The Internet on My Apple iPhone 4 in Safari, I Hardly use My Safari in My Apple iPhone 4 cause it's always slow, Sometimes it's Fast but sometimes more it's Slow, so maybe I Thought we should make an Apple Discussion Message Boards iPhone App for Apple iPhone & Apple iPod Touch? it was just an Idea it was more a Suggestion to come up with an iDea of it & I Did not mean to post this in the wrong forum if I Did? Maybe My iDea's & Suggestions may not be great? but at least I Tried, you don't have to come up with any Apple Discussion Message Boards Apps if you don't want to? it's really up to you or whoever creates this part of the Forum? i'm only trying to give you some help or Suggestion or an iDea whatever you call it & i'm sorry for posting this when i know it will get deleted maybe? or maybe in The Apple Discussion Message Boards we can have a Apple Suggestion Forum for Future iDea's or whatever it may be that you want to call it? maybe some people would like to post there Thoughts & Suggestions & Future idea's to Apple on here of what they would like & want to see as long as there is no Bashing & trashing & arguing with each other & i'm sorry if I Got carried a way to much if I Did? just thought I Would have a Suggestion/Idea on an Apple Discussion Boards App for Apple iPhone & iPod Touch maybe someday on The Apple iTunes in The App Store? but if you don't think my Suggestions are so great? its ok i'm Sorry I Bothered anyone on this Forum about this, ok peace & take care from Byron.
