Safari corrupted/ MBP

The safari program opens the home page and then crashes. This followed on from a severe slowdown/ failure to restart, and repair of an invalid node structure with disk utility, from the install disk.
I have tried dragging the safari folder and plist to the desktop, but it didn't help. The program does work in a test user profile, so I suppose the problem lies with my home user profile. I have also tried reinstalling Safari from the install disk, then using disk utility again, but it didn't work. Finally I tried a low-level system installation (keeping user settings), but that didn't work either, to my frustration.
Where is the fault, is the home profile corrupt? Do I have to do a clean install of the system and then reinstall all software and user settings? Please advise.

  • Safari corrupting downloads?

First off, a bit of background: I had to do an erase and install about 2-3 weeks ago, so this is a fresh, up-to-date installation of Snow Leopard we're dealing with.
That said, I decided recently to branch out from simply programming PHP in a text editor and explore some of the other technologies I keep hearing about, and picked up Drupal, Joomla, and the Zend Framework from their respective official sites. Latest complete, stable builds for all 3.
Drupal and Joomla downloaded without a problem, but when I put them in my /~username/Sites folder, XAMPP pretends they're not there, even if I restart Apache or the laptop itself. Zend's archive won't open at all.
Is Safari corrupting the downloads, or are there other issues in play that can be investigated?

Safari doesn't corrupt downloads; it just downloads whatever is on the server and has no affect on whatever that might be. If the Zend .dmg file won't open, then either it was corrupt when you downloaded it, or there's some other problem.
If something isn't working for you, I'd say maybe the downloaded and installed item may not be compatible with Mac OS X (or your version of Mac OS X), it may have been compiled incorrectly; the version of Apache that you're running isn't compatible; basically, any number of things could be the problem.
Have you tried the Apache web forums, or those for Drupal, Joomla, and Zend to see if they have an answer to your specific problems?

  • Disk Utility verification says my HD is corrupt, MBP shutdowns unexpectedly

    Hello,
I just purchased my MBP in February and am ****** to be running into a problem only five months in owning the machine. I'm a little frantic right now as I am in South Africa for study abroad and do not have my installation disks with me (left them at home in Los Angeles). I ran the disk utility after the software update for the latest OS X 10.6.4 software last month and it reported that my hard drive has been corrupted. It instructed me to insert the installation disk to repair the drive, but I as I said before I do not have them. What can I do? Also, yesterday the computer shutdown twice unexpectedly. Will my hard drive crash? What is the best solution to resolve this problem?
    Help!

Roger, no way to know for sure without booting from the Install disk or another Volume and running DU from there, but is it possible Verification, since "live," is unreliable and producing spurious errors?
There's no reason why it should: it's doing exactly the same thing as in fsck -fy, but of course it can't write to the directory while the disk is in use.
ZahraN: You could try booting into Safe Boot by holding down the shift key at the chime. Give it time, it will be checking and repairing the disk.
This is exactly the same process as fsck -fy so it doesn't matter which you do - though you get a report on what is going on with fsck -fy - and with 'exit' you can continue to boot directly into OSX rather than doing a complete reboot.
(While in Safe Boot, might as well do Repair Permissions -- not your problem, but can't hurt -- then boot back normally.)
As you say, this isn't actually likely to affect the problem: it can also be done during normal boot, though it's efficacy really applies when installations have taken place.

  • Using Cinema Display with mid-2010 MBP, post-Yosemite:  corrupted MBP screen

For a couple years I've been using a 27" Cinema Display attached to my mid-2010 MacBook Pro 15".  The dual-display setup works great for my home setup.
However, since upgrading to Yosemite, the MBP display often completely corrupts and reverts to complete gibberish, with fragments of the UI and desktop littered all about the screen.  Dragging a window over to that screen usually "redraws" it sufficiently enough to keep working, but soon the problem re-appears.  The screen of the CInema Display (my main working area) never corrupts, only the MBP screen.
My setup worked great in Mavericks, but something in Yosemite isn't driving both displays properly.  Can anything be done, aside from downgrading to Mavericks?
    Andy

I am having this exact same problem.  2010 iMac with NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256MB.  I have it hooked to a 30" display through a DisplayPort to DVI-D adapter.  The 30" is fine, but I have graphical corruption constantly on the main iMac screen.
This all started as soon as I updated to Yosemite a couple days ago.

  • Safari corrupt transparency in animated GIFs

I am running Safari 4.0.4 under Snow Leopard 10.6.2 on an iMac (mid-2007) and am having issues with animated gifs on websites displaying with fringes of mis-coloured pixels where they should be transparent.
Annoyingly, the issues are intermittent. I can find a bad GIF, see mis-coloured pixels, refresh the cache and sometimes it will be fine, sometimes it will show mis-coloured pixels again but in different places and colours.
Here are two screenshots of the issue. I have cropped the GIF, zoomed it 200% and saved it static for you to see the problem.
    Example 1 : http://www.dcoffey.co.uk/images/BadGif1.jpg
This was supposed to be an animated GIF of the Scottish flag and about every 2s (which is the length of the animation), the border of mis-coloured pixels flashes off then back again.
    Example 2 : http://www.dcoffey.co.uk/images/BadGif2.jpg
This was a snapshot of an animated GIF from DeviantART. The original is here : http://TheUncle2k.deviantart.com/art/glomppoke-146127118
When I save the GIF to Desktop and view the individual frames in Preview, they all look perfect but if I hold the cursor down and let it flick through them all, I get the corruption appearing occasionally (Example 2 original shows it on the second frame of the original).
    Any clues?

    HI Daniel,
Run the Apple Hardware Test from your iMac install disc to make sure it's not a video or graphics card problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
If everything is ok there boot from your install disc and run Disk Utility to make sure there aren't any errors on the the startup disk.
Insert your install disk and Restart, holding down the "C" key until grey Apple appears.
Go to Installer menu and launch Disk Utility.
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
*(Check S.M.A.R.T Status of HDD at the bottom of right panel. It should say: Verified)*
Click Repair Disk on the bottom right.
If DU reports disk does not need repairs quit DU and restart.
If DU reports errors Repair again and again until DU reports disk is repaired.
When you are finished with DU, from the Menu Bar, select Utilities/Startup Manager.
Select your start up disk and click Restart
While you have the Disk Utility window open, look at the bottom of the window. Where you see Capacity and Available. *Make sure there is always 10% to 15% free disk space*
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Go here for trouble shooting 3rd party plugins or input managers which might be causing the problem.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1594
Make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure Safari is NOT running in Rosetta.

  • Safari corrupts filenames of downloads. Help me?

Safari alters filenames when I download certain files. It has this unwelcome habit of appending .txt to the names of these files.
I use the Mac to download a lot of files for transfer to my PC. Whenever the filename ends in .rar, .ace, or .7z (and maybe others) the additional extension, .txt is appended.
Naturally, it's necessary that I remove this addition. To add insult to injury, OSX tosses up a dialog asking for a decision as to whether I really want to use the original extension or leave .txt in place.
I would like to stop the original change and I would also like to stop OSX from throwing up this annoying dialog.
Any ideas? There just must be a fix for both these actions. If I have to resort to the use of the console, please provide full info as I am unfamiliar with the console.

    PMG5 2x2.5 +30 Cinema   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

One solution in Safari appears to be to right-click (control-click?) on a link to a file then choose 'download linked file'.
Unfortunately, this often results in a download folder full of .html files because there's often a convoluted path through many servers to get access to the wanted file. This is especially evident when seeking files to use on a Winbox.
It's still easier to remove the unwanted extension after the fact. Or use Firefox.
Because I need to grab a lot of compressed Windows file packages using my Mac, Safari is becoming a huge pain in the neck.
A search of Apple/Support/Discussions/Safari reveals that thousands of users are being annoyed with this behaviour. I think I'll have to use Apple's feedback system to complain about this, add my whinge to the list.
You know, it would make some sense for Safari to add an extension if the function was used properly. But it seems that Safari has this list of registered file types and if the file of interest is not in it's list, Safari makes a guess and adds a random value. Safari's default should be that if a filetype is not recognised, to take no action. Absolutely logical, but seemingly, not to Apple's devs.

  • Safari Corrupting My System?

For the last two weeks, every time I surf on Safari, the program locks up and crashes my computer. When I restart, I get the dreaded blue screen. I have to restart in safe mode, delete all of my startup items and keychains for the computer to start up out of safe mode and get rid of the blue screen.
What's up? It seems the problem started with the latest version of Safari

You are not alone. A LOT of people are having the same problem. Take a quick trip through the safari discussions looking at the discussions involving safari "freezing", "locking up", or anything else that looks similar and you will get a feel for what is going on. There are suggestions for temporary fixes, but lets hope apple is ontop of this.

  • Safari corrupted?

Safari won't open on my Intel running Tiger. The window appears and it says "Connecting..." in the lower status bar, but the page remains blank and I get the beachball. Then I have to Force Quit, which I can do from the Dock. Firefox works perfectly and there are no other internet connection issues that I can find. I have done all the usual permission repair/restart I always do when a problem arises. Should I uninstall it and download a new copy? Will I lose my bookmarks? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Hello Liz:
It has been quite awhile since I was running OS X 10.4. Forgive me if I am fuzzy.
However, if my memory serves me correctly, you will need to reload Safari from your software install DVD (at least that is the case with OS X 10.6). I am not sure what will happen to your bookmarks - make a copy to be safe. In fact, if you are not doing so, making a good backup is always an excellent approach before any software changes. I use SuperDuper to make bootable clones ($28 US at www.shirt-pocket.com).

Forgot to add--PDF forms from websites pull up fine in FireFox 27.0.1 and Chrome 32.0.1700.77.  So, it appears to be a Safari issue... Or perhaps an issue with a plug-in or extension...?

Suddenly, the two-finger pinch to zoom is not working with Safari. MBP 13", SL 10.6.8 andf Safari 5.1. The View Menu Zoom control works fine, and the Pinch gesture works once thereafter, but then not. I have reloaded the Safari .plist. Gesture works with the Desktop icons and iPhoto. Any suggestions?

    Ditto with the Newsstand-blocks-the-Home-Screen bug.
I was eager to see the revised New York Times layout and disappointed when Newsstand wouldn't pinch closed.
The irony is, we can finally "hide" the Newsstand in a folder but now it takes over our Home Screens. I'm hoping this will be fixed in the first update.

From your Safari menu bar click Safari / Preferences then select the Security tab. Deselect: Enable plug ins Quit then relaunch Safari. If Safari speeds up loading pages, troubleshooting help here. Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues
Check Safari / Preferences - Extensions. If you have any installed, turn that off, quit, relaunch Safari.
Quit Safari. Open a Finder window select your Home folder in the Sidebar on the left. Then open the Library folder, then the Caches folder, then the com.apple.Safari folder. Move the cache.db file from the com.apple.Safari folder to the Trash. Relaunch Safari.
Check for Login Items:  Open System Preferences/Accounts then select the Login Items tab. Delete any files or apps you have listed there. And go to /Library/Startup Items. Move any files in the Startup Items folder to the Trash.
Right or control click the MacintoshHD icon. Click Get Info. In the Get Info window you will see Capacity and Available. Make sure you always have a minimum of 15% free disk space.
Try Safari in another user account. Same lag time there, log back into your admin account, launch Disk Utility. Verify the startup disk. If it needs repairing, help here for Using Disk Utility to Verify and Repair Disks
