Safari Forgets Download Folder

I have created a Safari downloads folder with a folder action script to automaticaly open certain files on download. The problem is Safari keeps forgetting the folder I set in Preferences and reverting to the Desktop for downloads. I have erased the preference files both in user and general with no effect. OS 10.4.4, nothing particularly weird running except Default Folder and Font Reserve. Thanks

Why create a folder with an action script? Maybe that's the cause of your problem. Just create one in your finder, put it where ever you want it and set it in your Safari prefs as the default dl-folder and then activate in the same window 'open safe files after downloading', or something like it, cause I'm using the dutch version of Safari. This never gave me any problems.

  • Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder?

Why is the contents of Safari's downloads folder different than the actual folder that resides in my users folder?

Problem is if I delete that .plist I'll delete those downloads.  I'm still able to launch those downloads from that location so that tells that file is probably not corrupted. I need to be able to located that folder and transfer the downloads from it before I do anything like this.  So that begs the question, where is that folder located?  When I do a folder search I'm taken to a Downloads folder, but it's not the one that is showing up from within Safari as it's contents are too different.

  • Automatically changing Safari's downloads folder

I want to have a automator script which can automatically change Safari's downloads folder. How should i do?

If you don't mind using GUI Scripting, and provided Safari is already open, the following script should do the trick:
    set downloadsPath to "/POSIX/path/of/destination/folder"
    tell application "Safari" to activate
tell application "System Events" to tell process "Safari"
click menu item "Preferences…" of menu 1 of menu bar item "Safari" of menu bar 1
click button "General" of toolbar 1 of window 1
        tell window "General"
click pop up button 5 of group 1 of group 1 -- "Save downloaded files to:"
key code 125 -- down arrow
            keystroke return -- "Other…"
            keystroke downloadsPath & return
            delay 1
            tell sheet 1
if exists static text "The folder can’t be found." of sheet 1 then
display dialog "This folder can't be found:" & return & downloadsPath buttons {"OK"} default button 1 with icon 1 giving up after 10
click button "Cancel" of sheet 1
                    click button "Cancel"
                else
                    click button "Select"
                end if
            end tell
click button 1 -- close the window
        end tell
    end tell
Tested under OS X 10.9 “Mavericks” with version 7.0 (9537.71) of Safari.

  • Safari 5 - Download folder

When I was using Safari 4 and I decided to download a piece of software, Safari allowed me to choose which folder I wished to save that particular file to. Since installing Safari 5 the download goes immediately to the \users\%%name\Downloads folder causing me to move the file to where I want it to be after the download is finished.
The Options menu only allows me to select a folder different from the Downloads folder. Have I missed a setting somewhere or is the download process limited in Safari 5?

I have the same concern. I want to choose what to do, I don't want the dumb computer to do it for me.
It is a logical thing to improve or add features to an update and not to hide or eliminate them.
I will go back to ver. 4

Oh my gosh I had the EXACT same problem, and for ages I couldn't figure out how to fix it until today. Here's what I did:
First I went onto my computer, opened itunes, and un-installed tumblr, vine and kik. These were the apps I was having problems with (it said I had them on my phone but, like you, they didn't show).
Then I went to the itunes store, searched for each one, and it said I could update them so I did (just FYI: for tumblr a window popped up saying "please click ok to confirm you are 17 years or older", so I did that also)
When I went back to my phone and tried installing them again (still on my computer), it worked!
I hope this helps, because it was incredibly frustrating. Good luck!

  • Just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - where is the downloads folder in the Window tab that is at the top of the page in Safari?  I used this a lot and really miss it!

I just got a new Mac Mini with Lion - the Window tab at the top of the Safari Browser used to ahve a downloads folder in it along with Activity etc - but it is not there anymore. Any way to get it back or is there another location it sits in?  I used it when I'd copy video info from the activity folder and then paste into the download folder and presto - I downloaded the video onto my computer.  I really miss this capability!

Download activity is found by clicking on the gadget on the right:

  • How to check the location of download folder programmatically in browsers like Safari, Firefox etc on Mac?

I am a part of Automation testing and I am downloading and installing the files programmatically with Selenium and Applescript on Mac. Is their any way to check the location of download folder on browsers programmatically?? if so pls suggest and also ways to change the location of download folder in Java or Applescript.

You will need to read and write to preference files. A job best suited for the shell with either command line tool, defaults or PlistBuddy. Each application preference file has its own structure. Reading Safari's preference file is easy.
    defaults read $HOME/Library/Preferences/com.apple.Safari DownloadsPath
Firefox isn't as clear but this should give you the download path.
    defaults read $HOME/Library/Preferences/org.mozilla.firefox NSNavLastRootDirectory
Firefox also keeps a sqlite database of downloads which may be useful to query. Command line tools can be wrapped in Applescript. Also, programmatically changing preference files on an open application is discouraged.

  • Safari Download Folder

I accidentally removed the Safari download window from my Doc. Does anybody know how to put it back?

Click on the item in the Finder's sidebar with the house icon and drag the Downloads folder to the right side of the Dock.

Everytime I open Safari it downloads a series of blank.aspx files into my downloads folder. Anyone having the same problem?

Has there been a fix for this yet?  I am downloading close to 150 blank aspx files every 15 minutes.  I have tried the fix from Carolyn Samit and the AdBlock seems to be working thus far, but when it is not working it launches Adobe Dreamweaver.  Which is going berzerker.
Any help would be much appreciated.

Where are my downloads going in safari 5.1 in lion, in preferences, it tells me it's going to my download folder, but there's nothing there?

    Hello:
In Finder, enter the name of something you downloaded.  Once located, that should indicate where the item is stored.

  • Safari puts a copy of downloads onto my desktop even though i have the downloads folder specified as the save downloads to location in Safari preferences. How can I stop this from happening?

I dont' want to have to keep manually moving each download off of the desktop. The downloads folder is selected as the location where i would like downloads to go. They are downloaded there but an additional copy keeps showing up on my desktop. Help!

What are dmgs? I downloaded Microsoft Silverlight and the icon showed up on my desktop. I tried moving it to trash but it wanted to delete the whole program instead of just a shortcut. I opened the general tab in Finder's preferences and the only options that were selected to show up on desktop were External Drives and Cds, Dvds, and Ipods. THanks so much!

  • Organize Safari Download Folder (Smart Folders)

Alright, I have been organizing my computer and I was wondering if there was a way to organize my download folder with smart folders. If a song I download or place into my download folder, I want to be automatically organized into this smart folder labeled, "Music." Is this possible? But I don't want to include all my music located on my hard drive. Just the music located in my Download Folder.

Open the downloads folder in Finder
    choose File-Find (Command F)
where it says 'search' at the top, select 'downloads' rather than 'this mac'
    Set the 'kind' to 'music'
hit the save button & save it inside the downloads folder (or anywhere), with whatever name you choose.

  • Changing "Mail Downloads" folder for attachments

It seems in Leopard Mail, when you double click an attachment to open it, it is temporarily saved to ~/Library/Mail Downloads. This is in contrast to (I think) Tiger, where it would be saved to the Downloads folder set in the General preferences. There is still a setting for the Downloads folder in the General preferences, and according to the help window, it is to "Specify the folder in which to temporarily save attachments you open from a message". To me, that means the same as the Tiger behavior. However, if I change this preference to, say, "Desktop", it seems opening an attachment (not explicitly saving it) still saves it to the ~/Library/Mail Downloads folder, not the assigned folder. Is this the correct behavior? If so, the help window is misleading. Personally, I would like the option to change this folder, although I suppose there are workarounds such as changing the Mail Downloads folder to an alias of the desired destination folder.
    thanks.

Ok, so much for that clever workaround. Doesn't work, Mail just throws up an error and refuses to save the attachment. Any other ideas? I just want Mail to auto-save opened attachments onto the Desktop, in case I forget to explicitly save it, and so I don't have to root into subfolders to find it.

  • Single Click to Download File - Auto Rename if Conflicting File Exists in Downloads Folder

I am trying to migrate from Safari. However, one of THE most important features that I simply can't do without, is the one click "Download Linked File" right click contextual menu item. This together with the auto-rename file action if a name conflict exists within the downloads folder, to which you are saving the file.
Is there a way to do this in FF? All I can locate is"Save Link As" and then you have to either click to save or manually rename the file if there is a conflict. This is a real pain - I am happy to allow duplicate filenames for certain files.
Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction - needs to be an absolute one click solution from contextual menu via an add on or something.
    Thanks

As I recall, DownThemAll is able to do this. You first have to configure it to rename files when a file with the same name already exists. Then you should be able to use the context menu option labeled “DTA OneClick!” or some such.

  • Downloads folder lost in trash. I managed to drag it from Home but now...

Downloads folder lost in trash. I managed to drag it from Home but now every download shows up twice, one in the download stack and another in the trash can. What can I do to stop downloads from showing up in the trash can?

I did it already. The thing is that, since I put the "downloads stack folder" into the trash, and the emptied it, the downloads (from safari) keep showing up in both: the downloads folder (the one I dragged from "Home" to fix my accident) and the trash. The trash looks empty but it is like the computer detects a "download folder" in the trash, that I can't see.
