Safari hijacked by mackeeper.zeobit - really, this is TOO MUCH

I clicked on a news article about a pastor who died recently in Sacramento, and a malware popup for mackeeper.zeobit.com urged me to clean my computer. The malware shut all the other Safari windows. The pop-up had an OK button, but NO OTHER WAY to remove the pop-up or close Safari. The normal window controls were missing.  All Safari Menu options were greyed out.  I tried using the Apple Menu to Shut Down, but that failed as Safari refused to Quit.
As Safari would not Force Quit (greyed out) and would not Quit when I used the Apple menu to Shut Down, I powered off using the Power Button ...several times. No good - still had the non-closeable window and Menu options to Force Quit Safari or Reset Safari were greyed out.
I spent a long time using Chrome to read a lengthly Apple discussion, which ended May 28th. Not really up-to-date and no practical help.  Finally, for no particular reason except for the passage of much time (30+ minutes?); when I next checked the Safari menu, the Reset Safari and Force Quit Safari options were no longer greyed out.
So I Reset Safari and Force Quit Safari for good measure.  Now I'm afraid to reopen Safari.  For now, I'm stuck using Chrome; and I don't care to use the Google product as it is basically spyware, IMO.
So, two questions:
1. Is there something I can do at the basic user level to prevent such interference that doesn't also cripple browser performance?
2. Is Apple going to do anything about getting these Mackeeper and MacDefender creeps from invading their browser?  (Oh, I know you don't know... just venting... sigh... I mean, this stuff's been happening to people for many months, my software's up to date, i guess Apple isn't too worried about us little users getting freaked.)

Many users will see references to an application called MacKeeper on various web sites and via pop-ups on their browser. Not only is it expensive for what it purports to do (freeware applications that do the same or more are readily available), it can sometimes install itself without the user realising it, and it can be very tricky to get rid of.
MacKeeper can be regarded as highly invasive malware* that can de-stablize your operating system. It is unethically marketed by a company called Zeobit and a rip-off.
Further opinion on it and how to uninstall MacKeeper malware can be read here:
http://applehelpwriter.com/2011/09/21/how-to-uninstall-mackeeper-malware/
Do NOT download or use the ‘MacKeeper uninstaller’ from the Zeobit site, as this will cause even more damage to your operating system.
This is also worth reading:
http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=245
Equally phoney was iAntivirus:
http://www.reedcorner.net/news.php/?p=341
until it was purchased recently (May 2012) by Symantic (makers of Norton anti-virus which does not work well with Apple OS X). Even after having tinkered with it, iAntivirus still fails to do the job properly and cannot be recommended.
There are no viruses that can affect Apple OS X and there is therefore no reason to run anti-virus software on a Mac, but a Mac, like all computers, can transmit viruses and malware to other users particularly those running Windows. Note, however, that Trojans are another matter and can represent a genuine threat, an example of which was the recent 'Flashback Trojan' which you can read more about here:

For further information you may find this User Tip on Viruses, Trojan Detection and Removal, as well as general Internet Security and Privacy, useful:
https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2435
The User Tip (which you are welcome to print out and retain for future reference) seeks to offer some guidance on the main security threats and how to avoid them.
* The expression ‘malware’ is a general term used by computer professionals to mean a variety of forms of hostile, intrusive, or annoying software.

• Is this video too much for my G4 Powerbook?

Hi,
I have downloaded a video from Vimeo and it won't play. At best it gets very choppy, even the audio, to the point where it just stalls.
I have a G4 powerbook, 15"
1.6GHz
2GB RAM
250GB hardrive (165GB free)
OSX 10.5.6
Quicktime Pro 7.6
The video is;
H.264 Decoder
1280x720
Millions
AAC
Data size 52.99MB
Data rate 6233.57kbits/s
Is this too much for my good old Mac?

Thanks Kirk, what a shame. I'd love a new Macbook Pro but I always said I would use my G4 till it fell to pieces, never thinking it would fail me in such a unremarkable way.
Might have to wait till the end of the summer though.....
Would you mind educating me somewhat. I wasn't sure from the details given in the Quicktime movie inspector whether the video was HD or not. The creator of the video shot it on a Canon Rebel XT SLR camera, in burst mode. That itself made me doubt it was HD, but Vimeo deals in HD footage so I just didn't know.
How did you deduce it to be HD, and what should I be looking for? How much data could my G4 handle?
Thanks again Kirk!

• Firefox is supposed to be faster - it's far slower than any other version & I'm going to back to Explorer - this is too much & it keeps crashing!. Is anything going to be sorted soon?

It is now so slow to load pages - I can have coffee and then maybe a page has loaded. Otherwise it's "embarrassed" because it cannot load pages/ bookmarks. This version is terrible - can you not put back the previous version till you've sorted out the problems?

I don't know anything about that.  But I googled it and found this post in another forum -
"I have more info on the issue at hand.
The RDTSC instruction has, until recently, been an excellent high-resolution, low-overhead way of getting CPU timing information. With the advent of multi-core/hyperthreaded CPUs, systems with multiple CPUs, and "hibernating" operating systems, RDTSC often no longer provides reliable results. The issue has two components: rate of tick and whether all cores (processors) have identical values in their time-keeping registers. There is no longer any promise that the timestamp counters of multiple CPUs on a single motherboard will be synchronized. So, you can no longer get reliable timestamp values unless you lock your program to using a single CPU. Even then, the CPU speed may change due to power-saving measures taken by the OS or BIOS, or the system may be hibernated and later resumed (resetting the time stamp counter).
I might be understanding this wrong but... Basically both RDTSC and QPC are used to time code in time-sensitive programs. However, RDTSC might be inaccurate in above described situations. I also might be wrong about this but I believe QPC has something to do with the HPET high precision event timer. Which is a more accurate timer.
So this might explain why RDTSC and QPC has a delta that is too high. And if all of what I said above is true, then this error is benign."

• Cannot use this device too much power camera

Read all the web traffic on the camera connection kits not working after the iOS 4.3 upgrade.  Is there a fix out yet from apple.

this is an old issue - since 4.3 was released.  as part of that release for whatever reason, apple change the amount of power it would support in a device connected via the camera connection kit.  some devices still work fine, some don't.  the work around seems to be to connect the devise using a powered usb hub.  The kit works fine for what it does, it just does not provide as much power to an external device as it did prior to ios 4.3.

• Is Adobe Reader really this bad?

Hi,
I've been working on a PDF for a while now, but I have found Adobe Reader to be completely useless. In fact it has hindered my progress greatly. I have to ask if anyone else has found this or if for whatever reason I have just been cursed with these issues. I find many Adobe products useful, but this is too much.
The biggest problem is that while editing text Adobe Reader will often crash and everything I have edited to that point is lost. When this happens I get an error saying,
The instruction at 0x3a32333a referenced memory at 0x3a32333a. The
memory could not be written.

Click on OK to terminate the program.
___________________________________________________________
I have no idea what that means and I have not found anything mentioning it. I have tried re-installing Adobe Reader but nothing changed.
Other problems I have -
The program constantly seems to be updated information even when I haven't edited anything; the cursor is always flashing between the pointer arrow and the windows blue loading circle, and the program is slow as molasses. when I enter text it takes up to 6 seconds for it to appear on screen. Not to mention the terribly unreliable and glitchy scrolling. I have to spend multiple minutes scrolling up and down hoping that it will stop on where I need to edit.
Whenever I am attempting to edit a text field and I scroll up to find the information I need that is earlier on the PDF it sucks my view back down to the text field. I recognize this may be an intended feature but with my other problems it is extremely irritating.
I don't know if my version of Adobe Reader is corrupted or something. It's been doing this since I installed it, and I'm just trying to fill out my Eagle Scout workbook. I am extremely frustrated and tired of using this program, but it doesn't seem there is much of a choice when it comes to editing PDFs.
I can't imagine that this is the experience most other people have with this program because I know that Adobe is very proud of their software's quality.
I'm using an HP ProBook 4545s running Windows 8.1 Pro
System Specs -
Processor: AMD A6-4400M APU with Radeon(tm) HD Graphics 2.70 GHz
Installed memory (RAM): 4.00 GB (3.45 GB usable)
System type: 64-bit Operating System, x64-based processor
I can't imagine it's a hardware problem because I can't imagine that Adobe Reader with it's homely GUI and seemingly simple construct is very demanding on a system, but it seems good practice to include all the information I can.
Thanks for any answers that can be provided, I really need this program to be able to work because I have to complete this workbook and time is running out.

Well if that is the case then it certainly answers my question. Although it raises another, I'm using Adobe Reader XI and I can most definitely open, view, and edit a PDF... well that may be saying a bit much since it does allow for entering text, exporting, and things such as that, but it doesn't do it real well..
If the answer really is I'm trying to use it for something it's not meant for I can accept that.
So I'd ask, what can I do in my situation then? I don't need a program for a very long. I only have about 24 days until I can't even work on this project anymore. Is there another program I can use that can edit a PDF that's free?

• When I open Safari I get mackeeper app.  Is this safe and how do I eliminate it?

When I open Safari I get mackeeperapp.  Is this safe and how do I get rid of it?

Quit Safari. If it won't quit in the usual way, select
 ▹ Force Quit...
from the menu bar, then select Safari from the list and press return.
Relaunch Safari by holding down the shift  key and clicking its icon in the Dock. That will stop the bad page from reloading automatically. From the menu bar, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
to get rid of any cookies or other data left by the server. Open your Downloads folder and delete anything you don't recognize.

• I can no longer use PubMed from Firefox. It works in Safari. How can I fix this?

This is a new problem as I have been able to use PubMed via Firefox in the past. I haven't noticed any trouble with other websites while in Firefox. I can search PubMed fine while in Safari but my EndNote doesn't interface with Safari for some reason and really want to be able to use PubMed through Firefox. Is this fixable? I have the most current Firefox too.

Could you be more specific regarding what issues you are having specifically? (i.e. What you are attempting to do, what's not working etc..)
You could also use safe-mode which especially since it sounds like a compatibility issue solves most issues or identifies the source
The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
* You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
* Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''
'''''If it is good in the Firefox Safe Mode''''', your problem is probably caused by an extension, and you need to figure out which one.
Please follow the [[Troubleshooting extensions and themes]] article for that.

• Safari hijacked-reproducable by me on two machines

Please note. I tried to post in a different thread but the thread got marked as answered so that was the end of that. So here goes again
I am getting a browser hijack on a regular basis. I have not been infected by the trojan. I get redirected to a pc malware site
performanceoptimizer.com
and then to
scanner2.malware-scan.com
I first noticed this when I would be browsing macnn.com/news and would click on one of their links which took me to an electronista site. I would get hijacked every time from the electronista.com site as described above. I emailed macnn and they seemed to know the problem had to do with me being in Canada. That was interesting. I was at mac2sell.net just before this and got hijacked the same way from them now too. No link to the electronista site this time though. I am running 10.5.2 with Safari 3.0.4 (5523.15) on my macbook.
Just another note about my browser hijack problems. I also get the same results from my Macpro (rev1) running 10.4.1 and Safari 2.0.4 (419.3). Not sure how to post pictures here if you would like to see them though
Thanks so much

Wow, this is a very quick reply!!
So the same product keys shouldn't harm my machines then? For example, when I try to install some upgrades from Microsoft website and there is this little software (which I forgot its name) that will check if my Windows is a genuine copy or not and I was just thinking that having same product keys could somehow break this "genuine copy" thing...
I just want to make sure that this is not a problem or illigal to do. Nobody wants to have a problem with the Microsoft I guess

• Something is wrong with Safari. How do I remove this bug?

Sometime soon after I downloaded and started using OSX Yosemite I began having problems with Safari. I have attached a screen shot of the message I receive shortly after opening Safari. I am pretty sure its a scam/virus as that is clearly not the apple care number. How do I fix this??

Helpful Links Regarding Malware Problems
If you are having an immediate problem with ads popping up see The Safe Mac » Adware Removal Guide and AdwareMedic. If you require anti-virus protection Thomas Reed recommends using ClamXAV. (Thank you to Thomas Reed for this recommendation.)
Open Safari, select Preferences from the Safari menu. Click on Extensions icon in the toolbar. Disable all Extensions. If this stops your problem, then re-enable them one by one until the problem returns. Now remove that extension as it is causing the problem.
The following comes from user stevejobsfan0123. I have made minor changes to adapt to this presentation.
Fix Some Browser Pop-ups That Take Over Safari.
Common pop-ups include a message saying the government has seized your computer and you must pay to have it released (often called "Moneypak"), or a phony message saying that your computer has been infected, and you need to call a tech support number (sometimes claiming to be Apple) to get it resolved. First, understand that these pop-ups are not caused by a virus and your computer has not been affected. This "hijack" is limited to your web browser. Also understand that these messages are scams, so do not pay any money, call the listed number, or provide any personal information. This article will outline the solution to dismiss the pop-up.
Quit Safari
Usually, these pop-ups will not go away by either clicking "OK" or "Cancel." Furthermore, several menus in the menu bar may become disabled and show in gray, including the option to quit Safari. You will likely have to force quit Safari. To do this, press Command + option + esc, select Safari, and press Force Quit.
Relaunch Safari
If you relaunch Safari, the page will reopen. To prevent this from happening, hold down the 'Shift' key while opening Safari. This will prevent windows from the last time Safari was running from reopening.
This will not work in all cases. The shift key must be held at the right time, and in some cases, even if done correctly, the window reappears. In these circumstances, after force quitting Safari, turn off Wi-Fi or disconnect Ethernet, depending on how you connect to the Internet. Then relaunch Safari normally. It will try to reload the malicious webpage, but without a connection, it won't be able to. Navigate away from that page by entering a different URL, i.e. www.apple.com, and trying to load it. Now you can reconnect to the Internet, and the page you entered will appear rather than the malicious one.

• I am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?

am trying to import Firefox bookmarks from a Windows machine into Firefox on an Apple. I do not want to use Safari. How do I do this?
I have, on my HP laptop, running XP Pro, using Firefox 4.0, went under bookmarks to show all bookmarks. A window opens up that says library. I then go to import and back up, and I choose export HTML. I then move this file over to my new Mac Pro. On my Mac Pro I also have Firefox 4.0. I go up under bookmarks, show all bookmarks, import HTML. It lets me browse and I find the file on the desktop, I select it then nothing happens. I am not interested in using Safari. I would like to continue using Firefox. However, as an experiment, I followed the same process except on my Apple computer I opened up Safari and tried to import in the Firefox bookmarks. It came up with an error saying the file could not be accessed. I then thought perhaps the file got corrupted, so I went back to my Windows Firefox and re-exported the bookmarks again. Same problem. So, am I creating the bookmarks incorrectly on my Windows machine?
Thanks,
Kent

Probably your Mac cannot understand the Windows html format, please try the following to see if it helps:
In your PC, export the bookmarks in html as you did in your post. After you have saved it, change the name of the file to “bookmarks.html” and save it again.
In your Mac, import the saved file as you posted.

• PDF in Safari: Fonts not displaying correctly: Has this bug been fixed?

Last year I was trying to view a PDF on the iPad with Safari, and there was a font corruption problem: On zooming in, the type would become garbled. Now granted, I was using a non-standard font (Univers Type 1). I also noticed this problem with certain magazines in the MagCloud app. I decided to work around the problem by converting my type to outlines; while this worked, it made the PDFs much larger in file size.
I checked this bug again under iOS 4.3 and could not replicate it. I've found anecdotal evidence out there that as of iOS 4.2.1 this may have been fixed, but I can't find confirmation. Any help in this regard is much appreciated. I need to present my project managers with discrete evidence that this bug has been fixed before they'll allow me to go ahead with "live" type -- and as we all know, the plural of anecdote is not data. Thanks.

Apologies, I should also make clear another key point...where it's blowing out (multiple places), I'm using apex_item within the SQL to render the form. So that's where the problem lies

• I'm Stuck at: Safari can't display content on this page.???

I'm still somewhat new to Apple so bear with me here.
As I use Safari I attempt to listen to a Radio Player online I'm greeted with this message:
Safari can't display content on this page.
Some content on this page requires an Internet plug-in that Safari doesn’t support. The application “Windows Media Player” may be able to display this content. Would you like to try?
I try that also but to no avail.
Thanks ahead of time

There is no windows media player support for the Intel Macs. MS has dropped support for Windows Media on the Mac platform.
Filp4Mac should have an Intel compatible plugin soon - I have no idea if it will solve this problem, though.
