Safari resets to home screen

Since updating to 5.01, my iPad periodically goes back to the home screen when browsing in Safari.  There doesn't seem to e any pattern to it.  I'm wondering if this is a software issue (is anyone else seeing this happen?) or if it's a hardware issue and I need o take the unit in while it's still in warranty.  Any responses would be appreciated.  Thanks.

See if the following help. Try clearing Safari's cache : Settings > Safari > Clear Cookies And Data and also Clear History
If that doesn't work then try closing Safari completely and then re-open it : from the home screen (i.e. not with Safari 'open' on-screen) double-click the home button to bring up the taskbar, then press and hold any of the apps on the taskbar for a couple of seconds or so until they start shaking, then press the '-' in the top left of the Safari app to close it, and touch any part of the screen above the taskbar so as to stop the shaking and close the taskbar.
A third option is a reset : press and hold both the sleep and home buttons for about 10 to 15 seconds (ignore the red slider), after which the Apple logo should appear - you won't lose any content, it's the iPad equivalent of a reboot.
Turning off iCloud and multitasking gestures on the iPad has also been suggested on these forums.

I am using windows Vista and having this problem also (not exactly, but iTunes gives pop-up that "files are in use"). Acting a suggestion from another answer in this thread, I clicked on Computer and selected eject...windows did warn me that the device was in use, but also gave me a CONTINUE button, which I clicked and it was ejected...had to go back to iTunes and eject the iPod there also, but it did eject

  • Safari/Mail icon home screen reset moving issue

I ran into an interesting issue earlier today when I was resetting the home screen layout of my iphone 4S. I attempted to move the safari and mail app icons out of the bottom tray (while the icons were "wiggling") and for some reason they would not come out. I hit the home button to stop the icon wiggling and attempted to move them again. No go. The phone and message icons moved out without an issue, but safari and mail would not.
I shut the iphone off and turned it back on and re-attempted it. This time it worked.
How come I am unable to take and move those two icons off that bottom bar right after doing a home screen reset? Anyone else experiencing this issue?

I Have the same problem on my new iPad Air.

  • My iPad 2 doesn't have the app store I have looked in everything, reset the home screen and the restrictions is off but I still can't find it.

My iPad 2 doesn't have the app store I have looked in everything, reset the home screen and the restrictions is off but I still can't find it.

If you got the iPad from your school, and the Installing Apps restriction is 'off' but greyed out (as you 've said here https://discussions.apple.com/message/16137325#16137325) so that the App Store app is hidden, then it's likely that your school has set the restriction - you will need to ask them to remove the restriction for you.

  • I have deleted my iCloud app from my iPad and cannot get it back.  I've reset the home screen, everything else appears but not that

Not sure if I had to submit my question:
I have deleted the iCloud app from my iPad and cannot get it back.  I've reset the home screen, everything else appears but not that

There isn't an iCloud app, I'm not sure what it is that you have deleted, but it isn't iCloud.

  • Safari goes to home screen as soon as i attempt to put in website since update

Please advise any fixes, as soon as i go to safari and enter a search it goes to home screen but frequently viewed sites still works.

    Hi there rrfaff,
You may want to try force closing all open apps and resetting the device as an initial troubleshooting step. Take a look at the articles below for more information.

Turn your iOS device off and on (restart) and reset

  • Safari "Add to Home Screen" Gone

I recently did a fresh restore to my phone because it was acting a little buggy and now it seems that the "Add to Home Screen" function in Safari is now missing. I have a screen capture of it here: http://img.skitch.com/20100818-kbhen3hsrx2i6u66ru63mnbaya.png
I tried searching everywhere to see if it was removed from the newest update and checked all the settings and could seem to figure out or find why its gone. It appears to be not being discussed anywhere so I figured I turn here.
If anyone could help, it would mean a lot because I use that function a lot and its bugging me not to have it.
    Thanks in advance!
    I am running 4.0.2 on iOS 4 on a 3Gs iPhone.

I fixed it by resetting using home key & off button

  • Safari crashes to home screen

    Can anyone help me?
When I am using safari to view a web page my iTouch suddenly goes back to the home screen - even though I did not press the home button at the bottom.
It has happened several times now. I have tried resetting safari in "settings" but that does not seem to work as it happened again soon after I did that.
    Any suggestions?

    Thanks very much.
When you say "known issue" do you mean that it happens to you as well? Or do you mean that Apple know about it and are trying to fix it?
My iTouch is brand new (16gb model) and I have only been using it a few days.

  • Safari crashing to home screen

This is getting really annoying. Every single time that I use Safari, it crashes and sends me to the home screen. This crash will occur anytime within seconds to a few minutes after beginning to load a page. I have cleared the cache and everything else and the problem still persists.
In anticipation of a crash I stopped a webpage while it was loading this afternoon. I did this so this so that I could read the text on the page which had already loaded. Despite the fact that the webpage was no longer loading, SAFARI STILL CRASHED about 30 seconds after the loading was stopped.
I see this problem posted and there seems to be no solution. Does this affect every single iPhone?
FWIW, I pretty much only use edge and not wifi. I have 4 free gigs of space on the iphone. I am using Vista at home. Software version on the phone is 1.1.3. I've owned it since a day after MacWorld. It has never been jailbroken.

Try a Reset by pressing and holding the Home button and Sleep/Wake or On/Off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and the release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so.
If this allows Safari to load a website, quit Safari by pressing and holding the Home button until the iPhone returns to the Home screen. This quits the application.
Then clear the Safari cache, cookies and history.
Power your iPhone off and on or do another Reset.
If this doesn't resolve it, time to give AppleCare a call - (800) 694-7466.

  • Help! Charge Keeps Resetting to Home Screen every minute or so.

Hi. My Samsung Charge Keeps Resetting every minute or so to the Home Screen. It shuts off anything I'm doing and goes black. It then starts up at the home screen and says "media scanner running" at the top of screen. What I was doing before problem occurred...I was listening to music player yesterday for several hours until battery went dead. I plugged the phone into my laptop to charge the battery and the problem started.

I don't really know what to do but your battery probably is not charged very well yet.  The USB port on a PC is NOT a very powerful charger.
Try this.  Plug your phone into the 1 AMP charger that came with it.  After the battery is charged past the 60% mark leave the charger plugged into your phone and then hold the on/off button (top right outside edge of the phone) until you see Power Off.  Touch power off.  After a minute restart the phone.
If that does not fix your phone do the same thing at one more or maybe two more times.
I hope someone else may have a better idea.

  • Safari quits to home screen when browsing in landscape

When browsing the internet and switching to landscape the phone goes back to the home screen.  Tried resetting the phone, issue remains.

I Have the same problem on my new iPad Air.

  • Safari returns to Home screen

When changing websites in Safari our iPad often goes blank and returns to the home screen. Just recently started in the year that we have had it. Other applications seem to work fine.

You can try this next. You can remove databases in Safari. I'm not sure it will do any good but it will not hurt anything.
You can go to Settings>Safari>Databases. If you don't see databases under the Accept Cookies field in the setting then it doesn't matter and this theory is shot. If databases is listed - tap it and it takes you to the next window that shows all of the databases in Safari. Tap edit and remove them - or at least see if one or more of those databases is from the sites that are causing Safari to crash. If they are, by all means delete them and that may help. It does no harm to remove these because when you return to that site again the databases will reload. I delete mine from time to time. If you see one that is close to the size limit alloted for that database, it may be causing an issue. Restart the iPad after you do this.
Your theory about removing apps may still hold water. You may have not hit on the one that is causing the problem yet. One other thing you can try is to download an app - any free app - see if Safari works OK after you try that. This  seems to be a new "fix" that sometimes works for apps that crash. Again - no promises - but it will do no harm to try. You can always delete the app if you don't want it.

  • Safari reseting prefs, home page, and bookmarks

Limewire is a major source of malware for computers, even Macs.
If you allow a Trojan to be installed, the user's DNS records can be modified, redirecting incoming internet traffic through the attacker's servers, where it can be hijacked and injected with malicious websites and pornographic advertisements. The trojan also installs a watchdog process that ensures the victim's (that's you!) DNS records stay modified on a minute-by-minute basis.
You can read more about how, for example, the OSX/DNSChanger Trojan works here:
    http://www.f-secure.com/v-descs/trojanosxdnschanger.shtml
SecureMac has introduced a free Trojan Detection Tool for Mac OS X. It's available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/
The DNSChanger Removal Tool detects and removes spyware targeting Mac OS X and allows users to check to see if the trojan has been installed on their computer; if it has, the software helps to identify and remove the offending file. After a system reboot, the users' DNS records will be repaired.
(Note that a 30 day trial version of MacScan can be downloaded free of charge from:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/buy/
and this can perform a complete scan of your entire hard disk. After 30 days free trial the cost is $29.99. The full version permits you to scan selected files and folders only, as well as the entire hard disk. It will detect (and delete if you ask it to) all 'tracker cookies' that switch you to web sites you did not want to go to.)
Stop using LimeWire. LimeWire (and other peer-to-peer sharing applications and download torrents) are hotbeds of potential software issues waiting to happen to your Mac. Everything from changing permissions to downloading trojans and other malicious software can be acquired from using these applications. Similar risks apply to using Facebook, Twitter, MySpace, YouTube and similar sites which are prone to malicious hacking: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/8420233.stm
Resist the temptation to download pirated software. After the release of iWork '09 earlier this year, a Trojan was discovered circulating in pirated copies of Apple's productivity suite of applications (as well as in pirated copies of Adobe's Photoshop CS4). Security professionals now believe that the botnet (from iServices) has become active. Although the potential damage range is projected to be minimal, an estimated 20,000 copies of the Trojan have been downloaded. SecureMac offer a simple and free tool for the removal of the iBotNet Trojan available here:
    http://macscan.securemac.com/files/iServicesTrojanRemovalTool.dmg
Also, there is the potential for having your entire email contact list stolen for use for spamming:

  • Safari Resets.  Home page and toolbar keep resetting, how do i stop it?

I change my home page and set up my Tool Bar with only the buttons I need.
However, next time I start my MAC or start Safari, the settings revert back to before with Apple as home page.
I have McAfee AV installed, could this be the cause?
Im on Mac OS 10.8.3 and Safari 6.0.4

    Yes it could be
I'd remove it completely, then test.
