Safari Update Problems

Hi
I have tried to run software update on my dual core G5 running OS X 10.5.7 and the installer hangs - it gets to the starry screen and hangs during 'Configuring installation'. I also tried downloading the full version of Safari 4.0.2Leo from apple and installing that - but it hangs at the same point (but doesn't go to the starry screen)
An help would be much appreciated.
Thanks
Ben

There are no guarantees, but following this procedure when installing updates and upgrades on your Mac, or even re-installing them, will go a long way towards avoiding unpleasant after effects and ‘post-update stress disorder’.
It is also worth noting that it is an extreme rarity for updates to cause upsets to your system, as they have all been extensively beta-tested, but they may well reveal pre-existing ones, particularly those of which you may have been unaware. If you are actually aware of any glitches, make sure they are fixed before proceeding further.
So before you do anything else:
If you can, make a full backup first to an external hard disk. Ideally you should always have a bootable clone of your system that enables you to revert to the previous pre-update state.
Turn off sleep mode for both screen and hard disk.
Disconnect all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
1. Repair Permissions (in Disk Utility)
2. Verify the state of your hard disk using Disk Utility. If any faults are reported, restart from your install disk (holding down the C key), go to Disk Utility, and repair your startup disk. Restart again to get back to your startup disk.
At least you can now be reasonably certain that your system does not contain any obvious faults that might cause an update/upgrade to fail.
3. Download the correct version of the COMBO update from the Apple download site.
The Combo updater of Leopard 10.5.7 can be found here:
http://support.apple.com/downloads/MacOS_X_10_5_7_ComboUpdate
If you prefer to download updates via Software Update in the Apple menu (which would ensure that the correct version for your Mac was being downloaded), it is not recommended to allow SU to install major (or even minor) updates automatically. Set Software Update to just download the updater without immediately installing it. There is always the possibility that the combined download and install (which can be a lengthy process) might be interrupted by a power outage or your cat walking across the keyboard, and an interrupted install will almost certainly cause havoc. Once it is downloaded, you can install at a time that suits you. You should make a backup copy of the updater on a CD in case you ever need a reinstall.
Full details about the 10.5.7 update here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3397
More information on using Software Updater here:
http://support.apple.com/kb/TA24901?viewlocale=en_US
Using the Combo updater ensures that all system files changed since the original 10.4.0 are included, and any that may have been missed out or subsequently damaged will be repaired. The Delta updater, although a temptingly smaller download, only takes you from the previous version to the new one, i.e. for example from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6. Software Update will generally download the Delta updater only. The preferable Combo updater needs to be downloaded from Apple's download site.
Now proceed as follows:
4. Close all applications.
5. Unplug all peripherals except your keyboard and mouse.
6. Install the update/upgrade. Do not under any circumstances interrupt this procedure. Do not do anything else on your computer while it is installing. Be patient.
7. When it ask for a restart to complete the installation, click restart. This can take longer than normal, there are probably thousands of files to overwrite and place in the correct location. Do nothing while this is going on.
8. Once your Mac is awake, repair permissions again, and you should be good to go!
If your Mac seems slightly sluggish or ‘different’, perform a second restart. It can’t hurt and is sometimes efficacious!
9. Open a few of your most used applications and check that all is OK. In this connection please remember that not all manufacturers of third party applications and plug-ins, add-ons, haxies etc, will have had time to do any necessary rewrites to their software to make them compliant with the latest version of your operating system. Give them a weeks or two while you regularly check their websites for updates. This applies particularly to plug-ins for Safari 3.
N.B. Do not attempt to install two different updates at the same time as each may have different routines and requirements. Follow the above recommendations for each update in turn.
Lastly, Apple's own article on the subject of Software Update may also be useful reading:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106695
If you are updating Safari (or just have):
Input Managers from third parties can do as much harm as good. They use a security loophole to reach right into your applications' code and change that code as the application starts up. If you have installed an OS update and Safari is crashing, the very first thing to do is clear out your InputManagers folders (both in your own Library and in the top-level /Library), log out and log back in, and try again.
So, disable all third party add-ons before updating Safari, as they may not have been updated yet for the new version. Add them back one by one. If something goes awry, remove it again and check on the software manufacturer's website for news of an update to match your version of Safari.
Most errors reported here after an update are due to an unrepaired or undetected inherent fault in the system, and/or a third party add-on.
Additional tips on software installation here:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106692
To reiterate, Input Managers reach right into an application and alter its code. This puts the behavior of the affected application outside the control and responsibility of its developers: a recipe for problems. That's not to say that issues absolutely will ensue as a result of Input Managers, but you, as a user, must decide. If the functionality of a specific Input Manager or set thereof is really important to you, you may well choose to assume the associated risk.
Again, the advice is to remove all Input Managers from the following directories:
• /Library/InputManagers
• ~/Library/InputManagers
especially prior to system updates (they can always be added back one-by-one later).

  • Safari update - problem with magic mouse

Hi all, I recently installed safari update to 5.1 (6534.50) on a mabbook pro OS X 10.6.8. Ever since update, I've been experiencing the problem with safari reloading pages and kicking me out of websites that use flash player (back to log-in screen). I can deal with that by using another browser, however the update has really messed up my magic mouse. At first, every time I put my macbook to sleep or shut it off, the mouse would stop responding when I woke the mac up. I would have to disconnect the mouse and reconnect. But this was really eating up my batteries, so this morning I shut the mouse off when I put the mac to sleep. Now it won't connect at all. Anybody have any suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!

    Thanks Carolyn and Barry,
I did what Carolyn suggested - moving the .plist file into the trash. I have not resetting the PRAM or SMC yet.
When I go to system preferences>Bluetooth, I get a screen that says:
Bluetooth power is off. To use Bluetooth, first you must turn it on. (Note - my mouse is turned on)
Both ON and DISCOVERABLE are checked.
In the middle of the screen, it says No Devices (Set Up New Device...)
When I select set up new device, it finds my device and attempts to pair but is unsuccessful.
Resetting the SMC and PRAM scares me. After reading the links that Carolyn provided, I remembered another weird issue I had with my mac shortly before the update and mouse issue. For some reason, my clock suddenly became out of sync and I was on a 2000 date. I got an error message and reset the clock manually. Could this be the cause of my mouse issue? I feel like every step I've taken to get my mouse working again has made the problem just a little bigger!
    Thanks again for helping me!
    Judy

  • Unique Safari Update Problem...

i'm relatively new to the mac and have the gist of it, but apparently it was a foolish thing to manually do a software update ... here's where my problem becomes different than what i have seen in this forum:
    - i manually did the update
    - safari then quit working, only bouncing once clicked
    - i did a little research and THOUGHT it was going to be the solution to the problem:
-> initially i deleted the plists and other safari prefrences ...
-> then i read to delete all of safari and start over
-> i did a search on safari in finder and deleted everything that says "safari"
-> now (expectedly) when i click safari there is just a question mark on the icon
-> i then attempted to download the newest version of safari 3.1 from apple ... "item cannot be installed on "./" (or something to that effect)
-> i have also tried to locate older .dmg's for safari 3 ... still wont install
-> i have downloaded the webkit that people have been talking about, but that does nothing
-> then i have even tried the software update in the apple menu on the top left of the screen and deselected the safari update and accepted the rest, but that wont install
like i said, im pretty new to mac, but know a decent amount about computers ... so i hope someone out there has the answer and maybe i can get my safari back to running normally.
i am running MAC OS X 10.5.2 since im sure that's relevant.
    thanks in advance.

see, i was thinking the same thing about leopard ... i guess ill goto the bookstore and see how much they want to charge me for leopard ... actually ill have my girlfriend's dad do it for me ... he got me a copy of ms office for students for $30 from his school bookstore when my school wanted 80 ... maybe they have a cheap copy of leopard ... [/useless info]
then comes my next possible problem ... not having the same install disk ... will that result in a required full "reinstall"?? ... i know i read how to keep the leopard you had before the reinstall, AFTERwards, but that just sounds like a lot of work to get safari working again ... there HAS to be an easier way ...
any other brainiacs care to take a whack at it??
edit: p.s. thanks for all your help.

  • New Safari Update Causes Multiple Posts. SLOW

Do Apple programmers/software engineers monitor this forum? If so- ❈❈❈ HELP ❈❈❈. Please fix this ASAP.
June 9 (7), 2010 Safari Update Problems- Slower, Multiple Posting
    I have Mac OS X, Version 10.6.3. 2.66 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, Memory 4 GB 1067 MHz DDR3.
This is the first problem I’ve noticed w/ a software update.
On June 9, 2010 I downloaded a safari update that was an automatic software update. This was probably the “Safari 5.0” update, dated June 7, 2010, but I’m not 100% sure. I downloaded it the same day I got it & I have software updates scheduled to look every day for updates.
This update changed the menu bar to blue when loading a new address. Previously the menu bar was white & showed a grey band at the end of it that said “loading” when loading a new address. Now the grey band is absent.
The new improvement is horrible. On a site I post & reply to posts on, It is slower in moving around a site & loading a page than before the update. I don’t care about the blue band. While the previous grey band showed immediately when it began loading, the new blue expanding bar on the address doesn’t immediately change when loading.
When posting or replying, when pressing the “post” button it takes longer to respond than before. Now that the grey band that said “loading” isn’t present one isn’t sure if it took the command. If the “post” button is pressed more than once it now posts as many times as the button is pressed. Then extra posts have to be deleted, but w/ replies this isn’t possible. This is a awful feature. The previous address function was much more preferable.
Before this update, when posting, even if the “post” button was pressed multiple times, it would only post once whether an original blog/post or reply. On some sites it seems to work OK.
If Apple technicians monitor this site, please provide a correction for this asap. The improvements are awful.
    The correction should have:
    1) Replace the grey band that said “loading” even if the blue band remains.
    2) Make pressing the “post button” multiple times only post once- like before.
    3) Return the speed it previously moved around a site & posted. Removing the blue band is OK. I don't care about this.
❈❈❈ Can I safely remove all the Safari updates that were added on June 9, 2010 when I added this update to the trash bin? Will this return Safari safely to the previous settings? I’ve found in finder where it expands to show the exact updates that were added on June 9, 2010.
Could just selected ones be removed to accomplish what I want? Any suggestions?

If you want to report this issue to Apple's engineering, send a bug report or an enhancement request via its Bug Reporter system. To do this, join the Mac Developer Program—it's free and available for all Mac users and gets you a look at some development software. Since you already have an Apple username/ID, use that. Once a member, go to Apple BugReporter and file your bug report or enhancement request. The nice thing with this procedure is that you get a response and a follow-up number; thus, starting a dialog with engineering.
Alternatively, send Feedback, but that usually goes through support and marketing, although when it'll get to engineering is anyone's guess.
Finally, there's the Safari toolbar Report Bug tool.

    Hello
    My system version 10.5.8
I have installed Safari update - 5.0.6 and the browser stopped working. At openingit shows the following icon:
"Safari has suddenly finished working. Possible problem is in the action of the plugin "TastyAppsAVPlugin".
After deleting all plugins from the folder "Internet Plugin", Safari worked again no problem, BUT all sites with flash content (e.g.YouTube) did not work.
I then tried the following experimental steps:
    a) Moved all plugins from the folder "Internet Plugin" into a temporary folder.
    b) Downloaded and istalled Adobe Flash Player version 10.3.181.34
    c) Started Safari and it did not work ( same message"TastyAppsAVPlugin")
    d) Deleted Adobe Flash Player from the folder "Internet Plugin". Safari worked.
    e) Moved back all plugins, except Adobe Flash Player, from the temporary folder to "Internet Plugin" folder. Safari works... But Flash won't work!!! Before update to Safari 5.0.6 , ev erything worked perfectly well.
    Guys, please solve the problem

  • Problems with Safari update: can you help please?

Hi, the Software Updater recommended to update to Safari 4.0.3
After I download it and clicked on Install, I got the following message:
"The update “Safari” can’t be saved. You do not have appropriate access privileges. "
After running the "Repair Disk Permissions" procedure of the Disk Utility (as suggested in a previous post) which found and repaired quite a number of permissions I tried to re-run the Safari update, but am getting exactly the same message as before.
Since I am the administrator and the only user of this Mac, (running OS X 10.5) I am puzzled, especially since all other updates download and install without any problem. Any advice will be highly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance
    Veit

Thanks, Sig, for the quick response. I am presently downloading Safari 4 as you advised. Will install and report back.
But would you know why the AUTOMATIC update did not work, i.e. resulted in these "you have no access privileges" message?

You should already have a newer version of Safari installed; if the application disappeared or you deleted it, use Pacifist to extract Safari from your Mac OS X 10.4 installation disks, and then rerun the combo updater for your version of Mac OS X.

Hi mcclausky, you may need to manually remove a policy setting from the registry. You also should scan for malware that might have created this problem.
This article lists scanning and cleaning tools other Firefox users have found helpful: [[Troubleshoot Firefox issues caused by malware]].
To check your Windows registry for policy settings that might affect Firefox or other programs, I suggest consulting a Windows forum or Microsoft's forums. For example:

I can no longer get my complete bank statements online, and my bank blames the latest Safari update and tells me to switch to Firefox.  Is there no other solution?

I would feel dreadful If I thought had caused you a problem.   The warnings about Java are fully justified but providing you are communicating with a known source, and as I said, you disable it the moment you have finished, you should be safe.
It might also be worth asking your bank what problem they have and would it be the same if you were using Firefox, for example.
Like you, I am very security minded, in fact I won't even put my bank details on my Mac let alone run my account that way.

  • Safari Update 8.14.14 causing fan to run loud?

I just did the update for Safari 7.0.6 on 8.14.14 and now it appears that my computer fan is running a lot louder after I did this update. I know that it is not the fan not working correctly or the vent is clogged because I am using Chrome right now to type this message and the fan is running normally. I am wondering if others are having problems with this new update and/or how to solve the problem of the latest Safari update causing the fan to run louder.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Extensions and plug-ins can increase fan speeds not just the browser itself.
From the Safari menu bar click Safari > Preferences then select the Extensions tab. Turn that OFF, quit and relaunch Safari to test.
Check the fan noise. If it decreases, turn extensions back one at a time to test until you find the culprit.
If it's not an extensions issue, try troubleshooting third party plug-ins.
Back to Safari > Preferences. This time select the Security tab. Deselect:  Allow all other plug-ins. Quit and relaunch Safari to test.
If that made a difference, instructions for troubleshooting plugins here.

Is it just me or is the last safari update for Yosemite slowing everyone down? Any ideas how to fix it?

When you see a beachball cursor or the slowness is especially bad, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
