SAS 146 instead of hdd 72 in RAID 10

Hi
I have a problem with a RAID set : I used 8x72 G SFF 15K DP with HPDB firmware  on HP Dl380 G6 with P410 controller and use RAID 1+0  for this 8 HDDs ; now HDD no7 failed and and replaced with  new HDD like other (72G15KDP) with same firmware  but didn't fix yet .. I replaced it again and didn't change ...
1- why none of this HDD didnt fixed the HDD failure ?
2-can I use HDD 146 15K for this raid set instead of failed 72 hdd  ?
thank you .

  • Maximum no of HDD with RAID in 790FX GD70 ??

    Respect to All experts !!
I have 790FX-GD70 in which 6x SATA II ports are provided by ATI SB750 chipset with RAID facility. I am currently using 2x Seagate 500GB in Raid 0.
I want to re-create it with 6x HDDs (Just for benching and self knowledge  as I know performance will not be 6 times faster or even 4 times).
Can ATI SB750 RAID use all 6x SATA ports with Raid 0 ???,
because my friend has an Intel board named P7P55D Pro E and according to him he is restricted to use more than 4 HDD in RAID.

I am using 18 file adapters at sender side .
added 6 more in dev and UAT total 24 working fine in these environemnts..
my file adapters never gave me a problem unless and untill structure problem..

  • PXIe-5186 output to HDD-8265 RAID

I've got a PXIe-1075 chassis with a PXIe-8133 controller and PXIe-5186 digitizer and HDD-8265 RAID connected to it via 8262 PCIe link.
Basically, I need to stream the digitizer output to the RAID.
In LabVIEW one can use NI-SCOPE to acquire the data from digitizer, and simply write it to disk. RAID is configured to look like a normal disk to LabVIEW, the only difference being a much higher write speed. The problem with this is that data comes through the controller. In my understanding, there must be a way to route digitizer's sample output directly to RAID, to avoid loading processor, which is a potential bottleneck.
Any advice on how to do it?
P.S. I also have a PXIe-7966R Virtex5 FPGA board in my system, and it would be interesting to route samples to RAID through FPGA board, and do some signal processing while at it. Is it possible?

    Hello,
I have been looking in to your question and found a few links that may be helpful:
    - This article talks about a Direct-to-disk controller that would allow for data to be streamed directly from the device memory onboard your instrument and across the PCI/PCIe bus, as well as some other infromation about device memory considerations and streaming architectures: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/3221/en/
    - Here is another helpful article that discusses the different RAID configurations that you can use as well as the different Benchmarks for various drivers: http://www.ni.com/white-paper/5897/en/
    - In my searches, I also found this forum post that is somewhat related to your question. He is looking in to using peer to peer streaming to transfer data from a PXIe-7966R to a NI-8265, though that RAID is not Peer to Peer supported: http://forums.ni.com/t5/LabVIEW/peer-to-peer-streaming/td-p/1935839

  • Satellite A200-1S5 - Can I use a second HDD and RAID?

    Hi all,
Is Toshiba Satellite A200-1S5 eligible for adding a second hard drive? It has RAID controller as far a I know - could it help?
    Thanks,
    Denis

The Satellite A200-1S5 does NOT support RAID!!!
But some A200 could use two HDDs (but NOT RAID!!!) There are different A200 models which supports different hardware specifications.
Therefore you can find the second bay at the bottom of the unit.
But if there is no connector for second HDD then this means that there is no second HDD controller and you cannot use second HDD in this A200!!!

  • OS X Server 10.3.9 can't handle very big HDDs as RAID miror?

I really searched hard on this one, but couldn't find definitive answer.
In our office, we have OS X Server 10.3.9 running on a G5 (dual 2GHz, 3GB RAM). OS X itself is installed on a 80GB hard drive.
there is also another internal SATA HDD of 400GB for data with an external FW800 mirror raid - also 400GB.
as we nearly filled the capacity of this 400GB, we decided (as a short term measure) to up the capacity, so we bought same internal and external drives as we have (seagate & lacie d2), only with 750GB capacity this time.
there is a company that does our more serious IT support, and while they were trying to do a new set up, it turns out that 10.3 doesn't support disk as big as 750GB in mirror RAID. (reports an error while trying to set up RAID mirror)
(strangely enough, they forgot to tell us about this when we ordered HDDs through them...)
now, option to speed this whole process before we run out of space completely is to get a OS X Server 10.4, which costs £699 :cringe:
I was trying to find confirmation of this issue with 10.3.9, but couldn't find any.
Did anybody come across this problem before?
thank you all in advance on your very knowledgeable answers.

    Hi Jovan
I don’t think its a problem with 10.3 server as such. You’ve got to remember that 10.3 is getting on a bit. As far as supporting the latest drive sizes Apple as well as other interested parties would devote their energies in supporting the latest operating systems. For example Microsoft have recently released Vista. Most interested parties will get on board the Vista bandwagon and start developing and writing drivers and software for that rather than XP. After a while you will start to see less and less being developed for the older operating system. I think this is just one of those times.

  • Imac 3g - Installing CF card instead of HDD - your suggestions ?

    Hello all!
I've purchased Imac Graphite 600mhz version and im thinking of retrofitting a Compact Flash card instead of hard drive. I suppose there is someone who did this already, what are your suggestions and experiences ?

Last year was my big buying decision for a camera. If you think I'm over thinking things with my editing PC build now, imagine then! hehehe! I ended up buying a Panasonic HPX370 with P2 cards. A lot more expensive, but well worth it after testing all the other cameras in a specific "price" range on the market. But back then the XF series was not out yet. For me 4:2:2 is a must. Plus the fact it's a real shoulder mount, with a real manual lens, and I could put a lectrosonic unislot receiver... well, you get the picture.
Honestly, I was not impressed with the Sony EXs. The picture is nice, but the ergonomics are wrong. Sure they have a larger sensor, but 35Mbps 4:2:0 long GOP that are stored on cards priced the same as P2? P2 cards can handle 100Mbps... 35Mbps is compact enough for SDHC cards. And That's why JVC uses them, with the same codec as Sony's. Ridiculous if you ask me. But that's typical to Sony!  Another bummer with the EX that turned me off? I regularly need to review footage, and switching to and from CAM and VTR takes a whooping 25 seconds!  Woohaaaa!!! Another strike for EX!
But if I were looking at a hand held sized cameras, and if the XF was out when I tested all the cameras, the 50Mbps 4:2:2 codec looks mighty interesting to me. Even if it's long GOP.  They are also resonably priced cameras.
All this to say, when I was seriously considering the JVC HM700, my card of choice was the Transcend series. After much research, they offer the best price/capacity/quality ratio. And the JVC reseller I delt with swore by them. Of course they are SDHC cards and not CF. But I just thought my anecdote would help steer things in the right direction.

  • SSD instead of HDD

I can't optimize my windows partition cause it is detected as SSD.
    HD fan

I know this is going to go off topic a bit, but it sounds like the original problem is solved, so I wanted to comment on this...
The memory in a SSD is accessed the same way the DRAM on your motherboard is accessed and you don't optimize or defrag motherboard DRAM.
The above is a bit of an overgeneralization.
Fragmented file accesses DO incur additional overhead, whether SSD or not - basically for each fragment there is the time the OS takes to format a request, the time the request takes to get sent across the various communication pathways, the time it
takes for the in-drive controller to store or fetch the data, and the time the confirmation or data takes to get back to the CPU.
It's just that the worst case is still pretty fast with an SSD because they have very small latency (i.e., no seek time).
    However...
Within the performance realm of SSD speeds, the difference between reading an entire file in one contiguous chunk vs. reading it as a series of very small fragments is actually still QUITE significant.  The extremes are literally the difference
in speeds a benchmarking program such as ATTO or AS-SSD reports for 4K byte I/O and large sequential I/O.  Some real numbers measured on a real system:
    SSD:
    4K I/O (e.g., fragmented) - 21 megabytes / second
    Sequential I/O (unfragmented) - 515 megabytes / second.
    HDD:
    4K I/O - 1 megabytes / second
    Sequential I/O - 105 megabytes / second.

  • Xserve with additional SSDs instead of HDDs!?

    Hello people,
I was wondering if the Xserve can be fitted with additional SSDs in the three drive bays available and then have the RAID controller recognize them and set up a RAID 5 or 0?
    Thanks!

    Not officially, no.
It might be possible to remove the physical disk in the sled and replace it with a SSD, but I don't know anyone who's tried.
Either way, even if you do replace the drive with a SSD, you do not want to use it in a RAID 5 array. The read-modify-write nature of RAID 5 will significantly shorten the drive's life.

Hello (hopefully someone can shed some light on my issue)
I own as above a MAC PRO (Early 2008) this has a RAID card installed along with two 15k.7 cheetah hdd (320gb) and a spare drive, (which i made a regular drive)
a while ago i had to replace the RAID card battery, so i did this, over a year later the same thing happened again, but as previous just left it and the system seemed fine for ages, until last night i was working in PHOTOSHOP and everything just froze and the screen kind of appeared GREEN, could not do a single thing. So restarted the mac, this time grey screen for ages and a message appeared, (macs version of blue screen) (see attached).
I restarted the machine and this time a flashing question mark folder!
    could not do a thing.
so i found my copy of snow leopard and got the computer to run this and at least launch the DISK UTILITY and (Interestingly in the drop down menu RAID UTILITY was also in the menu) but it did not matter which utility i used the (RAID or DISK) neither could see any of drives, just the dvd drive.
so looked around on you tube and various forums and discovered if i take out the RAID CARD and re-plug the main lead from the RAID card back in to the LOGIC BOARD I would be reverting the MAC to a normal regular non-RAID computer.
After performing this HARDWARE task and inserting all three HDD, and running the DISK utility from the drop down menu via the SNOW LEOPARD disc.
(interestingly since the RAID card had been removed the RAID UTILITY  from the drop down menu no longer appeared). running disk utility I can now only see the regular (spare) hdd and DVD Drive, but the two RAID HDD , again, still do not show up DISK UTILITY?
O.K. so i could chuck out the RAID card (AND RAID HDD) and just go with a regular set-up, and run a back restore from Time Machine on a NEW hdd purchased.
but what is wrong with the RAID, is the card at fault or are both HDD used for the RAID knackered? can i perform any tests, to see whats what?
thanks for your help in advanced.

hello people, the issue was in fact the GRAPHICS card nothing to do with the HDD or RAID system ( although this did cause issues with the RAID system it basically lost its way) below is my replay to another similar  problem some one else had!
working in photoshop and then everything stopped working and the lot froze! only option was to force shutdown (via button).
and try to restart, hoping all was fine, this was not the case :-(
I had the added issue of the RAID card system, that i have, this was confused to say the lease and would not behave or work, causing the start up to hang.
so i thought the HDD must be bust and the root cause. ( but soon learnt it was not the cause )
...bought a new HDD removed the RAID card and replugged the cable from RAID card into LOGIC board, ( making the computer act like any normal non-RAID system). I managed to install the OSX, using the snow leopard disk way. once the mac was running, i started to notice the screen would flicker and started to see 'artefacts'. so i started to reveal my symptoms to the web and forums and soon discovered that my graphics card could be the issue all along?.
    (nvidia geforce 8800gt 2x dvi).
I read up on that a fix, could be either A. reply the thermal paste, as the card could be over heating or B. stick the card in the oven trick.
Tried option A. first and nothing still issues, so last night took the plunge carried out option B. and ta da it worked! i even managed to run
from my new HDD my lasted install OS X, absolutely fine. I then thought, maybe i could repair my RAID so replugged all the HARDWARD back in and
carried out a disk repair and disk permissions on drives( took a small amount of time), via the SNOW LEOPARD disc - (Disk utilities) and this worked and now have my system working as it was just over 6 days ago.
what was the cost to get this?  bought a new hdd so 40.00gbp and thermal paste and cleaner kit ( your still need to do this ) search video card trick on you tube.
and renew thermal paste, approx 15.00gbp, technically i don't need the new HDD, but it was all part of the trial and error way i went. ( i do have extra storage as a result!)"

  • Xp pro clean install on sata but can't get it access my old raid hdd setup

    Hi,
I got the Neo4 nforce4 platinum board and i originally setup 2 300gb maxtor ide hdds to raid which had my old xp pro setup but its seen better days and wasn't legit but i own officially now and decided to do a clean install to the 250gb sata hdd i have. install went well with the exception of loading up the nvraid and storage controller during install which for some odd reason wouldn't copy to the sata hdd but none the less everything runs correctly and after i reenabled the raid, thats where i have a problem.
now after it was set in the bios and rebooted, windows found it as an unknown device which i then set it to the legacy nvraid setup files and installed fine but the problem is that it shows the raid hdd but gives me no access (nor did it come up with the correct name for the drive that was set but the size given was correct) and looking at computer management, it tells me i need to initize a drive which happens to be one of the 300gb hdds thats part of the raid ??? so from seeing that i know theres something wrong so i'm asking what can i do to correct this and get access to the files I already have on it? i don't want to lose what i got on the raided hdds, just wanna burn off whats needed and then wipe the hdd's.

Guys, I Finally got it to show up correctly I first did a mistake with changing the primary ide to nvidia's driver in which caused a BSOD lucky enough last known good option worked and going back to device manager, i noticed it mentioned a dual ide under secondary ide which i thought i'd try the nvidia driver on. sure nuff, after a reboot it found the 2 hdd's as raid and installing the drivers for them gave me access like before
Thanks for the help guys tho theres still one last thing i need to go and change now that i noticed it: the northbridge fan died and i searched around the forum and saw a few ppl recomend but i'm not sure what i can really fit as a replacement due to my Evga 6800u + nvsilencer 5 and didn't see any of the topic mention someone with the same. any suggestions on that?

  • Adding ssd to mac pro with raid hdd

    Hi,
In upgrading my 2008 mac pro (currently with hdds in raid) i'd like to add in an SSD with a clean install of yosemite and reformat the raid hdds for storage. What's the best method to accomplish this? I'll have to start over with the raid configuration i'm assuming because I need to give up a place for the SSD.
    Thanks,
    micaborn

Mac Pro 2006, 2007 and 2008 models have two SATA data connectors on the motherboard, hidden in plain sight. They can be accessed by using a cable kit such as this one:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/item/NewerTech/MPQXES2/
You can install the SSD in the second Optical bay. It has no moving parts, and does not run especially hot.
There are MUCH faster ways to run a High-end SSD, by installing it on a PCI slot adapter card, but you should try installing a 2.5" SSD drive as a first step. You may need to re-organize where you store things, like in this article:

  • HP Pavilion DV7-7008tx Laptop - Raid 1 for two 1TB HDDs?

    HP Pavilion DV7-7008tx Laptop
    B3K25PA#ABG
    Windows 7 Home Premium
    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion DV7 with two 1TB HDDs and a 32GB m-sata cache/ssd.
I would like to put the two HDDs into a RAID 1 (mirror) array.
When I enable RAID I loses the ability to boot into Windows.
I have verified that the Laptop will run the two HDDs in RAID 1 as I can run a Linux Boot disk ahd then boot into Windows 7 succesfully.
Something in the Raid /Boot  configuration is not allowing the Laptop to boot directly into Windows.
Any ideas or instruction would be helpful please?

    Hello @Micro-Motive ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're having issues booting after setting up RAID 1 on your DV7-7008tx notebook.
When setting up RAID 1 mirrors you need to enable the feature and then format the drives. After they have been formatted Windows must be reinstalled. If you have not already done this, please try it now and let me know if you still have the problem.
Why: Enabling the Raid 1 feature does not automatically mirror the drives. The Boot MGR is looking for the content on both drives but is only finding it on 1 and thus fails to load.
I think it's also important to explain that setting up RAID 1 with a 32GB SSD flash along with a 1TB mechanical drive is going to drastically reduce your storage space. RAID 1 mirrors the content on both drives so it can read from both at the same time, increasing read and write speeds. The downside to this is that the mirror only works to the extent of the smallest drive. Thus, your turning your 1TB drive into a 32GB drive.
See here for more information: Chapter 19. GEOM: Modular Disk Transformation Framework This article is for FreeBSD users, an open source Unix-like operating system but the same rules apply as RAID support occurs at the BIOS level.
What you may want to do is install a hybrid drive. A hybrid drive will allow you to use the speeds of SSD at a fraction of the price. You can read about this here: Hybrid hard drives: How they work and why they matter.
Let me know if you need any more information or if installing Windows after enabling RAID 1 does not work.

  • RAID on a single HDD

hi... i just want to know if it's possible to have just 1 TB of HDD with RAID on it... so it's just one physical harddisk that is 1 TB...
i've read that you have to have multiple HDDs for RAID...
i appreciate all the help! ^^

    Yes, RAID requires multiple disks.
Have a look at the RAID Wiki page which describes the different modes that are available:

There is no BIOS in OS X. There is only the EFI stored in ROM that is not user modifiable. OS X is probably checking Bay 0 for the boot drive since that is where it should be. It won't check the Tempo drive since it is treated like an external drive. I suggest you open Startup Disk preferences to see if the Tempo device is selected as the boot device. If it isn't, then select it. That will probably shave off a few seconds in the startup time.
