SATA Master -- Disappearing IDE Slave

:angryfire:Hi All,
I can't seem to figure this out:
K8T Neo  Sata Drive is my master or boot drive
              IDE is second hard drive
After the IDE drive stops spinning it disappears from my system and of course can't be written to until I reboot.
This normally happens a few weeks after every reformat (cause by SP2)
** I have all the very latest drivers and all the latest bios for the motherboard**
I've been very disapointed with my MSI board...the no LED with SATA and now missing drives.
Can anyone help me solve this ... Im at a lost to figure it out.
Thanks

IDE Primary on motherboard
...OK...if there is no Primary Slave, remove the jumper from the Western Digital HDD and use the end connector of the IDE cable...if there is a Primary Slave (CD-ROM, etc) put both jumpers (HDD, other device) in the Cable Select (CS) position...

  • K9A2 CF IDE / PATA and SATA issue where IDE is master boot

    Hi everyone,
I have built myself a pc using the K9A2-CF mboard and had trouble installing any OS on my SATA HDD.  Both windows and linux installers said the drive was locked and i couldn't install anything into the partition. (I have a lot of data on this drive that I want to keep.)  I couldn't even edit the partitions on the sata drive unless i deleted the master partition.
i bought a cheap 2nd hand PATA IDE disk, which i then installed winxp sp2 onto. (after some trouble as both drives were 'locked' meaning i had to delete and recreate the IDE partition) this eventually worked (IDE MASTER & Nbr1boot sequence). I even got my SATA drive working from windows.
This worked fine, but i switched off the PC and next day found it wouldn't work as the bios couldn't find the IDE drive anymore (takes a few mins to not find it too).
When I removed the SATA disk it worked ok. then when i reinstalled the sata disk it might work but then after a cold boot it doesn't.  Any ideas?
I'm pretty sure that if i reformatted the sata drive then it would work. I wish i spent an extra tenner on a second sata.  is there anyway the ide boot disk and sata storage disk can play together? i updated the bios to 1.5, played with ide jumpers. I even tried using a SATA to IDE connector that i used on my old PC but all it did was to display what looked like a graphics card code on it. (...GDDR4)
    thanks in advance,

ok guys i'm sold on the psu.  i do remember at one stage when playing around with settings and connections that the graphics card wouldn't send anything to screen.  my tv card is stuttering too so it may well be psu reated (athough that could be the s/w).
Fredrik, I can't find your guide, can you post the link please?
I'm out of the dabs 7day warranty but if i buy another psu from them then maybe they'll take it back.  ok then with my h/w spec:

...and considering i will at some stage put a phenom in there (and i gotta make use of that memory speed someday  ),  what psu should I buy?  I've noticed that it's not really the wattage that matters but the amps down the rails?  this is a budget pc btw so i've got about £45 to spend - or is that not enough?
thanks for your help - much appreciated!

  • Mac os x server 3.0.2 open directory master disappear from list

Hi, There is a very funny Mac OS X Server 3.0.2 issue.
After I updated my mac os X server from 3.0.0 to 3.0.2. as my host name is conflict with other Mac mini, I changed X server's Mac mini's host name, computer name and localhost name. When I restart my x server. My defined "Open Directory Master" disappear from my server list.
Actually, I need to change some setting from UI, as it disppeared from UI, I can't do any about it. Is there any way to delete it from command line? or How I can enable it appear again?

As can't find the defined open directory server master, have to delete it from terminal command line as:
    sudo slapconfig -destroyldapserver
and then add a new open directory master.

  • Master Drive to Slave Drive

is there any way to make a Hard Drive that is the Master to the Slave Drive?
    Art

I would suggest you locate the model of the drive which can be seen using System Profiler. Once you know what model it is you can go to:
    www.maxtor.com
Look up your model hard drive and there you will be able to find everything about it including jumper settings and configurations.
The settings should be listed somewhere physically on the drive as well but if not the website has the info.

  • Master, But no Slave..IDE 875p

I have raid0 on ICH controller.
1 esata on SER 3 (promise)
    cdrom/dvd on IDE2
Installed a Master Slave regular drive ide1 (pata?)
And only the Master showed up in Windows, along with Windows boot files there.
Should I move my cdrom/dvd to IDE1 and have the master slave HDDrives on IDE2?
Is that why the slave isnt showing up? They are WD drives w/ master slave jumper configs in the right place.

    thanks for responding Nov.
Ya checked that already and it never comes up. Just the master.
Also, I have them connected on IDE1,
for some reason windows put system files on the IDE disk.
I erased them. Perhaps its because that disk is first in line on boot in bios.

  • 785G-E53 Randomly disappearing SATA ports and IDE errors

I'm having an issue with various SATA ports on this motherboard "disappearing" or becoming non-functional randomly.  Shortly after I built the system I noticed that one of my SATA optical drives was not showing up in Windows -- moving it to another SATA connector on the motherboard resolved the issue and I chalked it up to a flaky connector and moved on.  Recently my system started hanging for ~ 30 seconds or so every minute or two and the event viewer was filling up with errors about the IDE port my other optical drive was connected to not being available.  I replaced the IDE cable and things returned to normal.  A couple of days ago I noticed once again that the SATA optical drive (in its new connector) had disappeared.  I have not had time to move it to another connector yet, and yesterday while browsing the web my system suddenly hung.  Upon rebooting, my Samsung 1TB SATA drive could not be found during boot-up.  I tried rebooting several times with no luck.  I turned the PC off for the night.  When I came back to it the next day, it found the drive and booted with no problems.  After immediately backing up any recent data, I reviewed the drive's SMART info (pristine) and then moved on to the event viewer again.  Apparently the IDE errors started a few hours prior to the HD's SATA port going AWOL.
There appears to be something flaky with the drive controllers on this motherboard, but I'm unsure how to confirm or troubleshoot this further.  Since the problem occurs at POST and boot-up, it is obviously not a driver or software issue.  I do not believe it to be PSU related -- the system has an OCZ 600W PSU and happily ran with a MSI GTX 560 Ti for months previously.  The 560 is currently out of the system and I'm using the onboard graphics, so the PSU is under even less of a load...
I'm going to be installing a new SSD and finally getting around to installing Win7 on this machine so I would like to resolve any potential motherboard issue first.  I'd appreciate any help you guys can offer.
    Here are the system specs:
    AMD Phenom II x6 1055T
    MSI 785G-E53 motherboard
    16GB DDR3 1333 RAM
    OCZ Stealthstream 600W PSU with 4x 18A 12V (72A combined)
    Samsung Spinpoint 1TB SATA HD
    2x Sony/OptiArc optical drives (1 SATA, 1 IDE)

To clarify, when I said POST and boot up, I meant everything prior to the bootloader taking over.  In the case of this particular system, multiple OSes are installed, so I have to select the Windows OS before it even starts to load itself.  The errors are present way before this step ever occurs.
With respect to the drives, it is not always the same drive.  Up until the other day, it was always an optical drive that disappeared.  The missing drive was not detected by (and would not show up in) the BIOS even after rebooting and going into the BIOS to check.  The same occurred with the Samsung HD.
(I do know not installing Windows from scratch is less than ideal but I needed the system back up ASAP and still had some software that was not Win7 friendly at the time.  Fortunately Acronis True Image handled most of the driver updates/replacements during the restore process and the few remaining I did from within Windows upon the first boot.  I highly recommend their product if you ever need bare-metal restore across dissimilar hardware!)
    Quote
No way that is 72A combined.
Look at the label and see how many watts the 12V rail can do, then divide 12-rail-watts / 12v = combined amps.
Hmmm... I may have misunderstood the label.  Here's what it says:
    Voltage:     +5V     +12V1     +12V2     +12V3     +12V4     +3.3V     -12V     +5Vsb
    Max Curr:    30.0A   18.0A     18.0A     18.0A     18.0A     36.0A     0.5A     3.0A
It does not list max watts for just the 12V rail.  Total output for all voltages not to exceed 580W.  When I bought it, the rep said add the 12V outputs together, but if that's not right I definitely need to know!
EDIT: Well, curious about the max amps, I popped over to Newegg and pulled up the legacy product page for this PSU...<sigh> It does not have a very good track record for longevity and, apparently, the 12V rail distribution is practically useless: 2 rails power the 8-pin ATX/EPS connector, 1 rail powers the 2 4-pin PCI-E connectors, and the remaining rail goes everywhere else.  I'm thinking it's a miracle my GTX560 Ti ever ran in this system at all.

  • G3 not booting from Master HD. from slave gets bomb in OS 9.2

    G3 B&W, 350 mhz, 320 Ram under 10.3.9 or 9.2. 2 HD's - 100 gb master with 10.3.9, partitioned into 6 drives, and slave is original 30gb under 9.2, partitioned into 4 drives.
I was having trouble with it yesterday, so I put the 10.3 install disk in to run disk utility. I went to the strat up disk controls and set it to start up from the CD. Restarted and it came up under Mac OS 9.2. Not a big deal, but wouldn't fully load. Gets to the startup screen and the progress bar goes for a little bit, then I get the bomb icon. I can't get it to boot from CD, and I can't get it to boot from old 9.1 rescue disk. I know the CD works, but won't boot from it. I tried disconnecting the slave drive but then I get the blinking ?, and nothing else. No chime noise either. Where do I go from here?

Prior to this, was your G3 running without problems? None of the 350 MHz B&W G3s originally shipped with a 30 GB hard drive - it was either a 6 GB or 12 GB. Are the two drives connected to an ATA controller PCI card or do you have a Revision 2 B&W G3? If you're not sure, check out this "Accelerate Your Mac" article and scroll down to the section entitled "Revised IDE Controller Chip." The first revision IDE controller doesn't support master/slave configuration of dual drives or support larger/faster IDE drives (typically 40 GBs —>) without data integrity issues. There have been reports in the Forums from users who successfully installed a 20 or 30 GB hard drive in their Revision 1 B&W G3s without stability problems, but that doesn't seem to be the norm. That's why I asked whether you have an ATA controller card or the Revision 2 motherboard.
“Restarted and it came up under Mac OS 9.2... Gets to the startup screen and the progress bar goes for a little bit, then I get the bomb icon.”
This makes me think that the OS 9.2 System build was created from another Mac’s Restore disk, and not from a universal/retail OS 9.x installer CD. It seems to choke, when it attempts to load an incompatible extension. Is the "9.1 rescue disk" that you're using a Restore disk for another Mac or is it a universal/retail version OS 9.1 installer disk? If the former, that could explain the inability to boot from it. As for the optical drive, be sure that the ribbon cable is firmly inserted at the rear of the drive and that the cable hasn't been damaged in any way. If it’s the original 11 year-old drive, it may need to be replaced. If you decide to do so, get a DVD±RW drive.

  • Clustered.txt file is found in Master instead of Slave

    Hello,
I have clustered my both author instances installed on different machines with shared nothing and I see that in the OSGi console under jmx, its showing as expected the MasterID and the members perfectly. But I see the clustered.txt file in the Master machine rather than in the slave machine. To, confirm on this i again reinstalled and did cluster configuration taking the earlier Master as slave and slave as master. But still the same behaviour, the Master machine got the clustered.txt.
Anyone has any idea on this??

    Hello,
this is the expected behaviour (see http://dev.day.com/docs/en/crx/current/administering/cluster.html#Automatic%20Out-Of-Sync% 20Prevention). The "clustered.txt" will be created on the master, as soon as the first slave joins the cluster. It will be automatically deleted, when the last slave leaves the cluster. If you have a "clustered.txt" in the master's repository while no slave is active, then it points to a problem (usually with the slave instances). But in your case everything seems to work as it should.

  • SATA boot with IDE hard dr. installed

Newbie here. I'm so proud of myself. MoBo is KM4M-V w/latest BIOS and Athlon XP 2600+ CPU. 2 CDROMs, Zip Dr. and 60GB HD in a Pull-Out use up all 4 IDE's. So I had to use SATA 80GB as boot up. With 60gb NOT plugged into Pull-out, Win XP installs perfectly. In CMOS, bootup priority set to 1)Floppy, 2)CDROM, 3)Disabled, Other Boot Dev. also disabled.
If ANY HD is in IDE Pullout, system tries to BOOT from that device and fails boot. Removing HD from pullout, boots fine.
Called MSI Tech Support (I LOVE MSI!), The Man said, "Change 1st Boot Device to SCSI". Now boots fine, with or without HD in pullout.
Just thought you'd want to know.

all addon ide controllers and raid is called scsi.
also alot of sata is called scsi too.

  • Linux not installing on my SATA HD on IDE channel 2

    PS.: sorry my bad english

I had issues recently installing Linux on a brand new server becuase it didn't recognise the SATA disks. Fortunately, I had the luxury of using another machine but the way round the problem is to find the Linux drivers for your disk-types.
Hopefully the manufacturer will have created some!

  • Z97 Gaming 7 - bios 1.6 , random SATA drives disappearing

Hello, today I updated the bios from version 1.5 to 1.6.
There is a problem, when i reboot the system, displays the message no drive to boot the system.
I have  3 drives, intel sad 520 with system, samsung ssd 840 evo and one normal hdd. Boot order, have changed, so i recover correct order and after the next reboot bios lost this settings. After several reboots, bios lost both SSD's and shows only question marks .
I disconnected all SATA drives, plugged in again, loaded the default settings, after that all disks get back but i lost my dvd-rom, bios also shows question marks. So i think its a random issue.
I switched mono to second bios (1.3) and all works fine, with 1.5 also was fine.
Is this a bug of the new BIOS or i've made something wrong?
BIOS 1.5 from the support site (no matter eu or global) won't run on Windows 8.1. the file downloaded by msi live update runs normally. Can somebody help and share BIOS 1.5 installer?

    To Kuba..
    1. Could you state clearly what is the original boot sequence of your HDD shown in the bios?
you mentioned that after you reset from Windows or from DOS then the sequence will changed??   how often will this symptoms happened.
    2. If you only use the Intel SSD 520 + the Normal HDD (remove DVD and the Samsung SSD) , will you see the boot sequence lost issue?
    3. What do you mean by the below??  you can't flash bios 1.5 in DOS mode???  please help explain in details
BIOS 1.5 from the support site (no matter eu or global) won't run on Windows 8.1. the file downloaded by msi live update runs normally. Can somebody help and share BIOS 1.5 installer?
    Regards
    Orginal boot sequence:
    1: SSD Intel 520 (system)
    2: SSD Samsung 840
    3: HDD
Mobo was traing to set Samsung at first place, but after disconnecting this drive, it put HDD on fist place. So i disconnected all other drives, and mobo shows only question marks in Intel SSD field.
I never had any problems with this intel SSD, it works perfect, samsung behaves the same way, it disappears randomly.
Sometimes all works correct, some times some drive is missing, it does not matter the restart is made on windows, dos, or on bios. Totally random.
When i switch to second bios (1.3) all works fine, only on 1.6 freaking out.
When i what start bios package from msi-support site windows shows "this app. can't be run on this system", thats all (there are 3 files i archive). File downloaded by msi-update starts normally (and this is only one exe file), unzip and run dos-mode update.  Unfortunately, I removed the file with 1.5 downloaded by msi live update.
Maybe the bios package is dedicated to installing from usb-drive through m-flash ?
And on the windows can update only through msi-live update? I really do not know, I'm confused.

  • Dual spi device with one master and one slave on the PC end

The powers that be want to emulate a hight speed RS-232 connection to an instrument we are building. We don't want to poll the instrument to see if it has data. They want the instrument to have both master and slave SPI busses so that it can push data to us.
I need to find the PC hardware to do this that is compatable with LabView so I can test it. It doesn't have to be a single device. It could be two as long as one can be master and the other slave. We have the NI USB-8452 but it can't be slave.

    Hi Viper
You are right, the 8451 can only be configured as an SPI Master. For creating a slave you would have to choose an FPGA based solution. Depending on the hardware from NI that you currently have, you can choose from different FPGA cards or devices. I found some links that might help you with your search:

  • Enable sata or pata ide?

Hoping someone can refresh my memory.  In bios setup, under integrated peripherals, I have VT8237 PATA IDE controller enabled and SATA IDE disabled.  Is this correct?  I have a SATA hard drive.
    Thanks

...PATA IDE always needs to be enabled, that's also for your optical drives on IDE1 or IDE2 or both...that particular SATA setting only needs to be enabled if you are using the VIA controller...

  • SATA vs. IDE speeds

I’ve had my system up and running since January with no major issues; all stable, etc. However, I noticed no appreciable difference when using my IDE WD drive vs. my SATA WD drive so decided to benchmark their performance. Both drives were virtually the same; transfer min. IDE 33.9, SATA 32.8; transfer max. IDE 58.0, SATA 56.4; burst IDE 81.5, SATA 98.3; access IDE 12.8, SATA 13.8. I think I might have a problem, shouldn’t SATA burst approach the PCI bus max. of 133mb/sec.? Went to Device Manager and see only IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers listed; shouldn’t I be seeing a SCSI controller for the SATA drive? The SATA drive is fully functional just not as fast as I expected; do I have wrong drivers installed? Please ref. my profile for configuration.

Some says that SATA is better cos of the speed and PATA is quite slow than SATA and also depending the speed of the HDD that you're looking for.
well, that's marketing. there is no hard drive in the world that passes 133 mb/s speed for the UDMA-6 p-ata mode, let alone the 150mb/s or 300mb/s for the s-ata1 and 2. all those speeds are teoretical maxes for the controler. if you take 2 harddrives which are similar and from the same manufacturer, you will notice that the only thing that's different is the electronics. speeds will be identical for p-ata and s-ata versions.

  • Adapter SATA Superdrive to IDE Logic board

Anyone know of such a device? This could simplify replacing a bad superdrive in 1st generation macbook.
You may have already guessed, my superdrive UJ-857 now only ejects any disk I load.
Interesting thing is my superdrive had only very light occasional use.

Just for completeness of info, the link shows an adapter to use a laptop style IDE optical drive with a standard 3.5" hard drive cable connector.
    http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=ADP2535S-BULK&cat=CCD
As you can see, no circuitry on the adapter. So a laptop style IDE optical drive is electrically the same as a standard IDE device. Since the standard IDE device needs an adapter with circuitry to connect to a SATA controller, that means that a laptop style IDE optical drive will need a circuitry based adapter as well. And vice versa. A SATA optical drive will not work on an IDE controller without a circuitry based adapter.
Therefore, if you have an IDE based Macbook, you need an IDE type optical drive unless you can find an adapter that's small enough to squeeze inside the case, or you don't care about reassembling the case and are only going to use the Macbook on your desk.
