Satellite A300 wont go into sleep mode - it boots up again

My Toshiba Satelitte A300 is simply refusing to sleep - it will sleep (the amber light glows and the screen is blank) and after about 10 seconds all the lights come back on and the fan starts going.
This happens when the laptop is plugged in and running on battery.
I have read about numerous sleep problems with the Satellite series and the only general advice i seem to have picked up is to install all updates which is what I have done and the problem still persists!
I would be very grateful if anyone could help!

well.. i got the same problem often .. but i suppose it's caused by operating system not by hardware. I makes no problems while using Linux, but it does while i'm in Windows Vista ;> I think it may be caused by some software activiti that is not stopped by the OS while you force it to sleep ;) i've seen that , i.e. unplugging anything from USB drive or the net cable while "loading" the sleep mode turns the screen black and makes the PC active in some way.

  • Toshiba Satellite L505D wont go into sleep mode. Freezes before power light blinks yellow.

When i try to put my laptop into sleep mode by closing the lid, it freezes before it enters sleep mode. i get a black screen when i pick the lid back up, and the power light stays green, instead of blinking yellow like its supposed to. Last time i remember it working properly was around June 6th, i took my laptop to my buddy's place so we could watch the new Halo 4 trailers and i know it worked properly on both the car ride over and the car ride home. anyone have any ideas whats wrong?

    Let's make some experiments.
What happens when you boot into Safe Mode?
Start your computer in safe mode
Also, what happens when you boot normally into another account? If necessary, create one.

Hi. My ipod touch (3rd gen) will not turn off or resond to anything and will not connect to a computer. the screen will not go into sleep mode and i dont know what to do. help?

    Try:
    - iOS: Not responding or does not turn on
    - Also try DFU mode after try recovery mode
How to put iPod touch / iPhone into DFU mode « Karthik's scribblings
    - If not successful and you can't fully turn the iOS device fully off, let the battery fully drain. After charging for an least an hour try the above again.
    - Try on another computer
    - If still not successful that usually indicates a hardware problem and an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is in order.

  • HT1338 Mac pro wont go into sleep mode

My mac pro has to physically be restarted everytime it should go to sleep.  I run it through a flat screen TV and when I go to sit down and use my computer the screen is black and the indicater light on the front of my computer is solid, not flashing.  Also I had my computer set up to turn off around 1 am and automatically turn on before I woke up in the morning, I have since turned this schedule times off but my computer is still following the schedule.  I updated to today, but all this started after the most recent update.  The only way for my computer togo into sleep mode is to physically push the button on the front of the MAc Pro tower.

System Preferences/Energy Saver - set Computer sleep to never. At times the OS fails to detect activity and allows sleep even though there is something going on.

  • MBP wont go into SLEEP mode!

Until the past week or so my computer will not go into sleep mode. It will black out like its going into sleep mode than after 3-5 seconds it will wake back up. This is becoming very irritating since I want to run my computer in 'clamshell' mode while I've been using my Dell external display.
Computer was fine for past 2 months up until about 5 days ago. If it makes a diff. i have an iphone hooked up with the update and I did the most recent MBP updates.
    any help?????

I am having a similar issue with my new SR 17" MBP. it will shut off the display, and will appear to be trying to sleep, only to spring back to life. The only thing that makes a difference seems to be Airport. If Airport is off, the machine sleeps fine. if it's on, very rarely will it sleep. I also checked the console and keep seeing something about an "mdnsresponder error". It doesn't matter whether i try to sleep the machine by selecting sleep in the apple menu, using the power button, or closing the lid. They all give the same result.
Here's my thread that I posted a few days back.

  • IPhone 3gs wont turn back on once it goes into sleep mode!

2 days ago my iPhone 3gs (OS 6.0.1) has gone completely wacko on me and i'm completely frustrated!   I have my phone set to have the screen shut off after 5 minutes.  Usually, to just reaccess the phone I just simply hit the home button.  Now, if I let it go into sleep mode, the phone WILL NOT come back on!  I went online and did some research, and it suggested holding the home button and the sleep button for 10 seconds to get it to come back on.  It works most times, but sometimes it takes a few tries to get it to come back on, and when it does come back on it takes forever to load up.  But the whole thing happens all over again when it goes into sleep mode.  My phone is fine as long as I set it to never go into sleep mode, but it is killing my battery.  I need to be able to put it into sleep mode as I have to be able to go all day without charging it at my job.  PLEASE help...I don't know what's going on with it.  I have never done anything to it (jailbreaking, illegal stuff, etc.) and I do all the updates that it asks to do.
    Please please help!
    Jennifer.

If you actually see a "6" error code, here's what it means.  Disable your anti-virus and/or firewall.
Errors related to third-party security software
    Error 2, 4 (or -4), 6, 1000, 9006
Follow Troubleshooting security software. Often, uninstalling third-party security software will resolve these errors.
There may be third-party software that modifies your default packet size in Windows by inserting a TcpWindowSize entry into your registry. Your default packet size being set incorrectly can cause these errors. Contact the manufacturer of the software that installed the packet size modification for assistance or follow this article by Microsoft: How to reset Internet Protocol (TCP/IP).
Verify that access to ports 80 and 443 are allowed on your network.
Verify that communication to albert.apple.com or photos.apple.com is not blocked by a firewall, or other Internet security setting.
Discard the .ipsw file, open iTunes and attempt to download the update again. See the steps underAdvanced Steps > Rename, move, or delete the iOS software file (.ipsw) below for file locations.
Restore your device while connected to a different network.

  • Week old IMac G5, Version 10.5.2, goes into "sleep" mode randomly....

My sister has a brand new IMac G5, OS X version 10.5.2, the screen randomly will go black, it still stays on, it's like it goes into sleep mode, but force quit wont work, nothing works, restart is required in order to get out of it.
On another note, when she restarts the computer, and sometimes when she's just starting it up not on a restart, the computer will have colored lines running down the whole screen, when it gets to the blue loading screen, it freezes there, where once again it requires a restart. Problem is, the computer is less than TWO WEEKS OLD. I've had my mac for years and cant figure out the problem, anyone that knows of, or has had similar problems and had them fixed that could help out would be nice. Thanks!

In fact, what your sister has is an intel iMac, not a G5, those were discontinued a couple of years ago. She has telephone support for 90 days and should call Apple immediately for a solution to her problem.

  • Mac goes into sleep mode amd doesnt come out!!!!!!!

Hi, new to this so sorry if this is a dum question. I have installed Snow Leopard on my IMac and Air. No prob on the Air but probs with the IMac. Everytime it goes into sleep mode I get a black blank screen and it wont come back up? have to reboot everytime or leave front row on with a slide show! any ideas welcome?

I looked around the internet and found an old post that seems to have solved the problem.  I had a relatively new USB port (powered) that I unplugged and, ta da, the problem disappeared.  I'm not sure why this happens (I'm not a tech person) but it seems like this should have been worked out in testing somewhere.

  • Mac Tower Pro  10.8.5 keeps going into sleep mode

Purchased from Apple, refurbished 2012 Mac Tower Pro.  At the same time, purchased a new Dell U2713HM, 27" monitor.
Have been operating on this new system since about the first week of December 2013.
    Issue:
The computer has constantly gone into sleep mode after a few minutes of no activity.  I can have iTunes radio playing, but the system still goes into sleep mode.  As  I am typing and moving the curser, the machine stays awake.
This has caused much frustration because when it goes into auto sleep mode, it quits all programs that I am in, and when it does this, I lose all the work I had accomplished.  It litterally closes everything and goes to sleep in about 2-3 minutes of no activity.
BTW:  the computer and monitor have all its new OEM cables that came in the box, when I purchased the units.
    Solutions attempted:
System Preferences — Energy Saver:  computer sleep and display sleep set to "never"  and unclicked the box "Put hard disks to sleep when possible."
Dell settings:  Turned off all energy savers.
    Results:
    Nothing.  Problem persists.

I apologize for the angst.  The problem has cost too much money in lost time and material because when it would automatically shut down after a few minutes, all my work was lost.
I misunderstood the terms of the warranty.  Thank you for your input and patience.  Much appreciated.  For the benefit of others that experience this with a new Mac that auto shuts down.  Check the following:
    1.  Go to System Preferences.
    2.  Click on Security and Privacy.
    3.  Click on Advanced  (bottom right corner)
    4.  If the first line is checked (Log out after 5 minutes of inactivity);  uncheck it and then click OK button.
    5.  Be sure to click the lock before existing Security and Privacy.
Now the machine will cease shutting down programs to go into sleep mode as soon as machine is inactive for a few minutes.

  • Smart Cover doesn't put iPad into Sleep mode in Unlock position after iOS 8.3 update

Prior to the iOS 8.3 update, closing my Smart Cover would put my iPad into Sleep mode when in the Unlock position.  Since the update, this function no longer works in the Unlock position.  In the Lock position, I hear the click and the iPad does go into Sleep mode.  Since I am the only one using my iPad, I don't need it locked when at home.  Has anyone else experienced this problem?

    hi guys. i'm back.
i solved my problem. i refer my iphone 5 to a local distributor. a repairman checked my iphone and i described my problem. he checked my battery. it was fine! then after an hour excavation around hardware solution he told me that the charging kit crashed because of heavy mobility usage!
yes. i did not covered my phone with any cover. the cpu pressure by ios update crashed the kit! now my phone get back after the kit changed and work finally. i restored my phone to ios 8.2 now.
i'm going to buy new iphone. but i'm really confused if such this issue really happened for iphone 6 too!!!!!
    i'm totally disappointed .

  • My Macbook Pro won't turn on properly.  It was perfectly fine when it went into sleep mode earlier on today, please help?

Closed the lid earlier on today and my macbook pro went into sleep mode.  about 12 hours later i opened it and the battery was dead.  Plugged the battery charger in and pressed the power button.  It boots up, disc drive works and it sounds the same as it would working perfectly fine.  Keyboard works and there is noise coming from the laptop when i press certain buttons like the volume etc but the screen isnt working.  Unable to enter FireWire targert disc mode to fix the sleep mode files which is what i think is wrong with it but i don't have a FireWire and i don't really want to be playing around with my macbook's internal files incase i accidentally touched the wrong thing.  Does anyone know what could be wrong?  Should i just take it to get repaired and let a specialist repair it?  Anything i should know about/be doing/not doing?

Plug it into a power oulet & then reset your SMC:

  • Early 2008 iMac (8,1) randomly goes into sleep mode

    Hey,
My early 2008 iMac (8,1) on 10.8.2 goes into sleep mode by itself. I've played around in Energy Saver, tried resetting SMC, NVRAM, replaced HDD, reformatted HDD, installed smcFanControl, reinstalled Snow Leopard, Lion, Mountain Lion. None of that worked. Took it to the Genius bar, performed some diagnostics tests and they said everything worked properly. Does anybody have the same problem? I can still use the computer for general computer use (light web surfing and e-mailing), but it seems to go into sleep mode when I have a lot of applications open and especially when watching videos. I've tried researching this problem, but I've haven't found a definitive answer. Right now, the Genius that I've been talking to thinks it may be the RAM. I'm waiting on new shipments of test RAM to arrive at the Apple Store for him to properly diagnose.
    Thanks,
    Jason
    iMac (8,1)
2.8 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
    2x2 GB 800 MHz DDR2 SDRAM
ATI Radeon HD 2600 Pro 256 MB
    1TB 7200 RPM SATA ST1000DM003-1CH162
If you want to read the whole time line, I've included it here. I apologize for it being so long.
At first I was running Lion (10.7.5) and the computer would enter sleep mode whenever I was doing anything with video. For example, watching YouTube videos and chatting on FaceTime. And funny enough, I distinctly remember watching a bunch of movies with VLC and the computer did not go to sleep (Although, this is not true anymore). I could wake the computer up and use it, however within a few minutes the computer would re-enter sleep mode. The computer seemed fine and I could access all of my files. Tried resetting SMC and it did not resolve the issue.
I made a Genius appointment to see if they were familiar with the issue. The iMac passed the in-store diagnostics test; it said all the components were functioning properly. He told me to bring it home to do a fresh re-install of my OS and then run my computer to see if the problem persisted. I took it home and reformatted my HDD with a 35-pass erase, re-installed Snow Leopard (10.6.8) and declined to transfer any backups from Time Machine. I was using a fresh system and sure enough, the problem persited. Tried doing the same thing again but with Lion (10.7.5) and still no luck. So I made another appointment and it passed the in-store diagnostics test again. I let them keep the computer for a 24-hour diagnostics test. They told me they would diagnose my computer with the OS on my HDD as well as a copy of OS that the Apple store deemed 'good' on an external HDD. The Genius called me and told me that my HDD failed their 24-hour diagnostics test and recommended I replace it. I initially had a 750 GB HDD, and the Apple Store could only offer me a 500 GB HDD ($200). I opted to take my computer to Carbon Computing, an authorized dealer in Toronto, to have a 1 TB Seagate HDD ($170) installed with no OS on it. I brought it home, performed another 35-pass erase and installed Snow Leopard. Problem still persisted. Repeated with Lion, still unsuccessful. Looking back, I was so excited that I just had to replace the HDD to fix the problem, I forgot to ask the guy if he could recreate the issue.
I began to suspect that it was a heating issue. So I installed Temperature Monitor and smcFanControl, and cleaned the fans as much as I could without taking the computer apart. Without smcFC on I tried to recreate the problem and I noticed that the Power Supply Position 1 reached 95 degrees Celsius, and Graphics Processor Temperature Diode reached 97 degrees Celsius before entering sleep mode. I don't know much about temperature sensors and what they monitor specifically, and so I couldn't draw any conclusions from that data. I turned on smcFC and cranked the optical drive speed to 2000 RPM, HDD to 3000, and CPU to 3000. The computer still went to sleep but the temperatures were below 90 degrees Celsius before entering sleep mode. I've tried researching here and on the internet about normal operating temperature ranges of iMacs and generally found that most do reached that temperature but they do not go to sleep mode.
Then I thought it may be a problem with Lion so I upgraded to Mountain Lion. The issue still persisted. Tried resetting SMC and NVRAM, did not resolve issue.
I called the same Apple Store explaining to them that their recommendation of replacing the HDD did not resolve the issue. They told me to bring it in and have them check it out again. I went through the same process I did before; the iMac passed all of their diagnostic tests. The Genius told me this time he will test out the RAM. He called me and told me that he could replicate the problem and so he proceeded to put in a stick of 'good' Apple RAM, but the computer would not work. He said the 'good' Apple RAM was damaged, either before or in the process of putting it in. He plugged in my old stick of RAM and the computer worked. He tried to recreate the problem and claimed that the computer ran for over 24 hours with an existing movie on my HDD playing and it did not go to sleep mode. However, once I brought it home I played the same movie right away and it turned off 17 minutes into the movie. Tried resetting SMC and NVRAM again, ran the movie again, still went to sleep.
And that's the story for now...

Now to find out WHY it does it at home only. How hot is it at home? Have you checked the AC current/voltage at home?
Well they were able to replicate the issue at the Apple Store the second time I left my computer there. Anyway, we don't have any heating on at my house at the moment. It's usually from around 20-23 degrees Celsius (72-75 F). Temperature Monitor says ambient temperature is 30 degree C though...
I'm not really sure how to check the AC current/voltage at home, but my computer worked before I moved it. So I'm not sure if that is the issue.
I normally only have speakers set up to my computer and a wired keyboard. The speakers are powered separately. I would assume that at the Apple Store only the power cord and wired keyboard are connected.
What is the Power Supply Position? And what does it do?
    Thanks for your help!
