Satellite C55- how to force games to use gforce GPU?

Hello,
it seems that I have 2 graphic cards on my Satellite C55: an Intel 4000 and a gforce 740m. I tried to force games to use the gforce on nvidia control panel but in the games settings (for example in the material tab of flight simulator 2004), only the Intel is shown.
Any idea how to solve that?

The Intel GPU is part of the Intel CPU
The nVidia GeForce is the external graphic card and it can be used for heavy performance application like games

You can assign any application to use either the intergraded Intel card or the dedicated nVidia GPU.
This can be done in the nvidia control panel.
1. Click Start and then Control Panel. Select Classic View from the left side of the window.
2. Double-click NVIDIA Control Panel.
3. Click View and next Add "Run with graphics processor" Option to Context Menu. Close the NVIDIA Control Panel.
4. Right-click the application title and select Run with graphics processor. Then, click High-performance NVIDIA processor.

How to force RH9 to use only one master stylesheet for all Word imports?

I have set a stylesheet (css) as the default for my RH9 WebHelp project in project settings. When I import Word documents into the project, the edit import setting dialog does not show this stylesheet in the list of available stylesheets for the import.
What is happening instead is a proliferation of unwanted stylesheets derived from all the imported documents. I then have to manually re-set all the new topics to the master stylesheet.
How can I stop this, and force RH9 to use only the one master stylesheet for all imports?

Hi Peter,
That’s what I thought I was doing in the Project Settings>Import tab>CSS for Style Mapping selection. Maybe that isn’t what it’s meant to do. It’s just getting annoying having all these unneeded files popping up in the project manager so that I have trouble distinguishing the “real” topics from the extra stuff.

Query tuning and how to force table to use index?

Dear Experts,
i have two (2) question regarding performance during DRL.
Question # 1
There is a column name co_id in every transaction table. DBA suggest me to add [co_id='KPG'] in every clause which forces query to use index, resulting immediate processing. As an index was created for each table on the co_id column.
Please note that co_id has constant value 'KPG' through out the table. is it make sense to add that column in where caluse like
select a,b,c from tab1
where a='89' and co_id='KPG'
Question # 2
if i am using a column name in where clause having index on it and that column is not in my column list does it restrict query for full table scan. like
select a,b,c,d from tabletemp
where e='ABC';

An index is used to reduce the resultset of a query by storing the values and the rowids in a specified order. When all the values are equal and index justs makes all dml operations slower without makeing any select faster.
And of cause the CBO is clever enough not to use such a index.

Yes this is possible. However it depends from a few things.
1) How selective this condition is. In general an index will be used when selectivity is less than 5%. This factor depends a bit on the database version. it means that when less then 5% of your rows have the value 'ABC' then an index access will be faster than the full table scan.
2) Are the statistics up to date. The cost based optimizer (CBO) needs to know how many values are in that table, in the columns, in that index to make a good decision bout using an index access or a full table scan. Often one forgets to create statistics for freshly created data as in temptables.

How to make a Mac use dedicated GPU in Windows

So I have this problem: when I launch games through Boot Camp on my late 2013 15 rmbp, I occasionally run into lags and frame drops in various games. The thing is, sometimes the same games run perfectly smooth with a decent frame rate, and sometimes the lags are so bad that it's almost impossible to play.
This makes me think that my Macbook is using the integrated Iris Pro gpu instead of dedicated 750m. So my question is, how can I force Windows to use dedicated graphics in games? In NVidia control panel, there's no option like Dynamic swithing.
P.S. I just reinstalled Boot Camp drivers using the WININSTALL drive, and checked NVidia website for updates

Furthermore, Boot Camp only uses the dedicated GPU because of problems related to GPU switching, so this is not the problem. Anyway, you can check which GPU Windows is using > http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/video-cards-faq#1TC=windows-7
Have you checked if there is any app open while you are playing games and they do not run as smooth as you want to?

How to share game progression using icloud?

I used to play infinity blade on my iPhone 4. Now I have an ipad2 and want to continue my progressed game from iPhone 4.
I can see the game stored on iCloud but not how how to pull that across to my iPad?

How to force user to use program?

I have designed a java app that starts as soon as you log on to a Windows NT client. The application asks the user for a project number. After the user types in a valid project number, the application hides. When the user logs off, or does a shutdown, the application writes info to a file about about how long this user used the PC, and for which project number he or she did that. When a user does not enter a project number and tries to close the application, the system will automatically shutdown. I can hide the windows taskbar by using a big size for the application frame.
My question is, how can I make sure that the user does not simply ignores the program by using the windows key, or ctrl-Esc to launch the windows start menu? Someone out there who has an idea? Thanks in advance!

How to force dg4msql to use a specific port

I've configured an Oracle Database Gateway (Linux RHEL 5) to connect to my SQL Server boxes, but have a host based firewall (on the Linux box) in between them. Sniffing shows that the communication to port 1433 comes from a range of port numbers on the Linux box. Is there a way to force 'dg4msql' to only use a specific port?
Removing the host based firewall is not an option, nor is opening up total communication between the two machines. Hopefully 'dg4msql' can be configured to use a specific port.

It isn't possible to configure the gateway to onlyuse specific ports.
This is not just a gateway issue but the way that SQL*Net works and you should see the same problem connecting from one Oracle database to another through a firewall.
The only workround is to use a firewall which is SQL*Net compliant or a firewall which will limit the number of ports to a certain application.

How to force Mail to use Mail Drop on 15MB attachment?

The recipient of an email message I composed has a maximum message size of 10MB. I am trying to send an attachment that is 15MB. Mail on Yosemite does not use Mail Drop unless the message is about 20MB or more. The message is being returned by the receiver's mail system because the message is 15MB and it exceeds their maximum of 10MB.
Is there a way, a user default maybe that can be entered in the Terminal app to force Mail on Yosemite to send my message using Mail Drop?
It would be nice if Mail on Yosemite recognized the email being returned and prompt you for a chance to resend using Mail Drop.

Sqldeveloper and multiple homes - how to force it to use included jdbc

Hello,
I'm having a hard time to get Sqldev 1.5 working with a WE8MSWIN1252 database on windows system that has also a 10.2.0.3 home installed.
It looks like it's then not using the own jdbc but the 10.2.0.3 thin jdbc found in the Oracle home - running into bug 4659157 - euro symbol and other 1252 characters have problems .
Can I enforce Sqldeveloper 1.5 to use the included 11.1.0.6 jdbc drivers?

I have 2 homes in my machine:
9i - "C:\oracle\ora92\"
10 - "C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\"
In each tnsnames.ora file in "\network\admin\" dir in each home, set up their services to point to the correct server: where 9i or 10g.
Now, when I set up, as you said:
91 echo home
set ORACLE_HOME = C:\ oracle\ora92\
start sqldeveloper.exe
Failed, because when I create a connection of TNS type, it is only see the service tnsnames.ora file located in the home 10.
Any other suggestions?

I've already tried re-installing Acrobat Reader, and repaired the installation, change the preference in Acrobat telling it to open PDF's in Reader, but for whatever reason, it doesn't.

Can I force Leopard to use a different python installation

I should have posted here initially at the Unix board...
Dumb question: Will Leopard use a different python install in bash than the python used by an ordinary GUI application? I want control over which python install the GUI application uses.
Does anyone know how to force Leopard to use a macports installation of python instead of the default Apple installation? I know how to get the shell to use it, by putting an "export" line into the ~/.profile file, or adding a .bash_profile file to ~/
and the bash shell will use my macports install of python. However when I use an application called blender
www.blender.org
which relies on python for some operations, it refuses to recognize some python modules installed in the macports version of python, which can be running simultaneously in bash. The python shell in Terminal says the module has been imported because there is no error message, but blender and the Console both say the module was not recognized by blender. Is it possible that the application blender has been compiled in such a way that it will only look for leopard's version of python? Is there a way to get leopard's python to take into account the mess of folders in macports python so that it can use the files therein? I've already tried putting the +/opt/local/bin, sbin, lib,+ and include folders into the path returned by env.

If this is the case, then I guess you can tell blender to use this framework (instead of the Leopard's default framework) by setting the evironment variable DYLDFRAMEWORKPATH to "/opt/local/Library/Frameworks". Of course there is a possibility that the framework installed by MacPorts is not compatible with the blender.
But there is another problem; if you start blender by double-clicking on its icon, the environment variables set in your shell have no effect. You can set environment for GUI apps in ~/.MaOSX/environment.plist, but it will affect all the GUI apps so it is rather dangerous (if a framework in /opt/local/Library/Frameworks/ is broken, then many apps won't run correctly). So the first thing you may try is to start blender from the command line:
$ export DYLDFRAMEWORKPATH=/opt/local/Library/Frameworks
$ /Applications/blender.app/Contents/MacOS/blender
Of course the "$" above is the prompt of your shell, and you need not type it. If you have installed blender.app in a different folder then modify the path accordingly.

Satellite C55-A-1N1 - How to repair Windows 8.1 after trying Linux?

Laptop: Satellite C55-A-1N1
In my infinite wisdom I tried to install Linux in a dual boot scenario like my old laptop. I shrunk the main windows partition in windows 8.1 first and then installed linux to that partition. After rebooting, Linux worked but not windows since I had to disable secure boot and set bios to CSM for linux to load.
After putting secure boot back to on and bios to EFI, windows no longer boots. I tried to repair the windows operating system by running the repair tools from another Win8.1 DVD but they didn't repair the booting. I subsequently learned that holding zero at boot brings you to the hidden recovery partition.........except my doesn't!
So, I have checked the windows and recovery partitions are intact but I cannot get to the recovery partition or repair the windows installation with windows 8.1 repair tools. No, I don't have any backups, other images or system restore options. Clever, aren't I? I only have the original recovery partition (which I can't access) and windows partition to play with. I don't want to lose my OEM Windows 8.1 license...
Any ideas how to salvage this windows installation?

You have made the same mistake as many other people. On this forum we have discussed so many times how it works and tried to explain how all this works.
In users manuals is clearly described that every notebook owner should create recovery media (DVD or USB) and this created recovery media can be used for recovery image installation in case that HDD recovery option doesn't work or in case that HDD is defective and must be replaced.
As I can see you don't have this recovery media. Fact is that HDD recovery installation can be started if notebook has factory settings only. After your Linux experiment this option is gone and there is no way to start it again.
What you can do now? I know it sounds stupid now but if you want to install original recovery image you need to order new recovery media and it can be done on https://backupmedia.toshiba.eu/landing.aspx

How do I force Mail to use contact names in Address Book?

I ~need~ Apple Mail to display sender names as I have them in Address Book. My students are Thai and have typed their sender names in Thai, so I can't recognise a thing. I've sorted all the names out in Address Book (in English) but Mail still displays sender names using the email default, rather than the names from Address Book.
• Upon receiving new mail however, the message's sender name ~WILL~ show up as the name put in Address Book. HOWEVER, after viewing the message the name reverts back to the one specified by the email author!! After that I can't get the name to show up as the Address Book name!
Is there a toggle somewhere? How do I force Mail to use the contact names from Address Book?
