Satellite L40-13G: Bios not updating on Vista SP1

I have a Satellite L40 13G and the latest Bios update refuses to update.
I'm trying to update my BIOS because the laptop freezes randomly at times and I have "graphics" issues where games lag where there's any form of an explosion such as gunfire or a bomb.
There are no instructions, not in the exe and definitely not on screen. If I didn't know how to flash a BIOS I would definitely not know to choose the .bin BIOS file in the directory between all the DLL files.
Thank you
Yahweh.

The reason why your laptop keeps frozen is because there is a bug in the current graphic driver on your computer. If I am not wrong, you may have blue screen of death at the start up occasionally.
There is one way to solve the problem is to update the bios and I hope bios for L40 already updated the graphic bios (VBIOS) (I dont have L40 so I am not sure about this). However, be careful when you update the bios as it is quite dangerous and may kill your laptop.
If you have problems with the graphic/game, please follow the instruction given in: http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=33432&tstart=15 (both first and second post). Try this one before you try to update your bios.
When you download the graphic driver from intel, you may receive the message that the driver is not suitable for your system. Don't worry. Just extract the driver package you download from Intel somewhere on the harddrive, Go to Device manager, browse to the extracted folder to update the driver manually. After it finishes, run the Intel Package again to complete the process
Good luck.

  • How to update BIOS on Satellite L40-13G

    Hello everybody!!
I want to update my BIOS, but doesn't know how to do it. I looked instruction on a site:
    Option 2: Update with CD-ROM
    1. Extract the zip file containing the BIOS upgrade to a temporary folder.
    2. In the temporary folder three sub folders will be generated. "docs", "Update - 3,5' Disk", "Update - CD-R or CD-RW"
    3. How to make a bootable CD-ROM please read the *.pdf file in the "docs" folder.
    4. Ensure the Notebook is connected to the mains.
    5. Turn the Notebook off.
    6. Place the CD-ROM containing the BIOS upgrade in the optical disk drive.
    7. Turn the Notebook on with the F12 key.
    8. The BIOS boot menu appears. Select CD/DVD or the CD-ROM symbol using the arrow keys. Press "Enter".
    9. The Notebook will boot from the BIOS upgrade CD-ROM.
    10. A boot menu appears. Select the point for update the BIOS by using the arrow keys. Press "Enter".
    11. The BIOS update process starts. Do not switch off the notebook during update.
    12. If the update process is finished follow the instruction on the screen.
Downloaded such update of bios: bios-20070904123621.zip
    Page with update file: http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_bios.jsp
Then I decompressed zip,.. and didn't see three directories, which written about in instruction (from above).
Help please, what I must to do. Or how to update my BIOS?
    Thank you!

    Listen Alexey!!
At this time you can find the BIOS 2.20-WIN for Satellite L40 on the Toshiba European driver page.
This is a *windows-based* version of the BIOS. Its *NOT* traditional BIOS version.
In such case you cannot update the BIOS using a diskette or CD. The BIOS update must be performed while the OS is running!!
However, the BIOS update is tricky and always RISKY!!! If you have no problems with your notebook, dont update anything!!!
The wrong BIOS or wrong BIOS update procedure can damage the board!!!!

  • Re: Satellite L40 - Black screen after updating BIOS

    Hi everyone,
I have exactly the same problem as reported here:
    http://forums.computers.toshiba-euro...threadID=35156
My portable is a Satellite L40-150 (Model PSL48E) It came with Vista and BIOS version 1.60
I updated the BIOS to version 5.50, because I wanted to install Windows XP. The BIOS update process went fine and the computer automatically restarted. Upon restarting, I entered the BIOS (pressing F2 key). I pressed F9 to load default settings and exited the BIOS, saving the changes.
The laptop restarted and the screen is now completely blank. Nothing appears in it.
I tried removing and then reinserting the RAM modules, but it didn't help.
So, I guess the only option is to return the laptop to a service center?
Why is Toshiba doing this? Are they doing this on purpose or what?
    Regards.

I meant why is Toshiba releasing a BIOS upgrade that can render your laptop useless? (I've tried all the recovery methods they mention on their web, including turning on the laptop while pressing F12, but none of them work)
I've routinely upgraded the BIOS on all the computers I've owned through the years, and I've always reset the BIOS to its default settings right after upgrading. It's a procedure recommended by all manufacturers.
They all recommend to restore BIOS defaults after an upgrade because sometimes there can be some "leftover" configuration remaining from the previous BIOS version.
I upgraded the BIOS prior to installing Windows XP because it's the logical thing to do. Toshiba offers two different BIOS versions for my laptop, and the clearly state that one of them is compatible ONLY with Windows Vista, and the other one is compatible ONLY with Windows XP.
Could you tell me why should I install Windows XP on a laptop that has a BIOS designed for Vista? Common sense dictates that you should first upgrade the BIOS, and then install Windows XP.
I've contacted Toshiba's technical support and they will replace the laptop free of charge, because it's still under warranty.
I admit I'm satisfied with their customer care services, but I'm surely disappointed by their Quality Control. It has failed miserably in this BIOS release.
    Regards.

  • Re: Where can I find XP drivers for Satellite L40-13G PSL40E

Please help me, Where can i find drivers for L40-13G (PSL40E) for winXP?
    In service http://ru.computers.toshiba-europe.com/cgi-bin/ToshibaCSG/download_drivers_bios.jsp?service=RU
i found only "Installation Instructions" with filter by WinXP.

It seems the XP drivers for L40 PSL40E are not released at this time.
It looks like you have to wait for till the XP drivers will be published
Anyway if you want, you could try some singles XP drivers from another L40 series many notebook series are equipped with the same devices and sometimes the same drivers for example WLan, LAN, sound driver could run on many different notebooks series

  • MSI H61M-E23 (B3) bios not updating ....

    Hi,
The board was working fine, it had an old bios, so I when to MSI website to download an up to date bios.
H61M-E23(B3) MS-7680 ver 2.11  (info on the board)
    xxx.msi.com / support / mb / H61ME23_B3.html#down-bios
the bios I found on msi site was ver 12.3 @ 2013-01-10, it was an executable file!
(how can I extract the BIOS ROM file from this?)
Anyway I was running win8 x32, I close all programs that was running, then started the bios upgrade, after a few seconds windows started to restart, then I got this message about the BIOS NOT COMPLETED UPGRADE, please insert bios floppy disk or usb.
I then downloaded the last bios file that had a ROM file in he zip file from MSI website "7680vAE.zip"
    ver 10.E @ 2012-02-16
I extracted the files to the root of my 2GB USB, then plug it in, restarted my pc, and go a message:
"Updating BIOS ......... file not found"
Copy out the ROM file "E7680IMS.AE0" to a FAT32 formatted 2GB USB stick,
I then copy that file and rename it to "E7680IMS.ROM", then Copy it again and rename it to "AMIBOOT.ROM"
With all 3 files on the root of my usb, I put it in one of the 4 use slot on the back of the motherboard, I use the one below the PS/2 plug.
I am still getting that message, about file not found.
(What file is it looking for?, as in the file name & extension)
I also tried the Ctrl + Home, a few times you would see a 2 letter code on the bottom-right corner of the screen, B4/B2 & A2
Now I am getting the message:
"BIOS update is not yet completed, please insert the USB pen drive and reset system."
but it don't not say what file name and extension to name my bios to get it to load or replace the corrupt one.
    Can someone Help ME ?

    OK, Thanks.
I formatted my 2GB USB stick, then extracted the C3.rar file to the USB
the file name was EIVB.BIN put it in my computer and the screen, when from B4, to A2 then it started to update the bios.
After it reach 100% it restarted my computer now I am not getting anything from it,
no display, no keyboard light, no mouse light.
but the pc, turn on like nothing is wrong, no beeps.
Was that recovery BIOS for the H61M-E23?
How can i recover from this?
    Can I do an AMIBOOT.ROM or AMIBOOT.BIN or AMIBIOS.BIN/ROM ?
Can i use an old bios for this board say 7680vAE and rename the .AE0 file to EIVB.BIN and  recover this board ?
    Please Help

  • Satellite L40-13G - need more powerful battery

Hello! My current battery No is PA3591U-1BRS. I need a battery that can provide me more than 2 hours of working. Can you advice me something?
    Thanks!

    Hello
As you know Toshiba offers more powerful batteries for some notebook models. More powerful batteries are offered for business line notebooks only. Unfortunately for your Satellite L40 there are no other batteries as those you already have.
Satellite L40 seems to be low budget notebook and there are no much options offered for it. :(

  • Treo Pro will not sync with Vista SP1

I'm really hoping somebody can help me here.  I just replaced my aging 700p with the long-awaited Treo Pro (Sprint).  I've actually been looking forward to getting fully Windows-based, since my 700p syncing was routinely problematic - always having to do workarounds and plug in the cord just the right way, etc...
Let me try to give you the flow so far.
    I have Vista SP1
    I get Treo Pro
I plug Treo Pro into Vista, SP!, all ready to sync up my Outlook 2007 data.
Treo Pro fires up a very impressive looking installation routine.
Routine seemingly works fine - getting me to the point where you unplug and reconnect your device to do your first sync
I reconnect, and hear the Windows "USB connect" sound, then.... nothing.
I open WMDC and it says "not connected"
I open "USB to PC" on the Treo, and uncheck the "advanced networking" box as suggested by some other posts.
Windows sees the difference and installs a couple of other drivers.
Windows connects, gives me the "USB connect" sound, and WMDC says "not connected"
The Treo appears to attempt a sync, but finishes with a message "To synchronize this device, you must install ActiveSync 4.5 or newer on your desktop computer. "
HUH?  ActiveSync only works with XP - of course I can't install that!
By the way, I tried the same thing with my Vista SP1 laptop. Same exact results.
Also, at no time have I seen the WMDC icon in the tray area. (I remember having a Nino way back when, and the ActiveSync icon was down there)
I thought this was supposed to be easy - Windows PC, Windows device.  Piece of cake, right?  Not so.  If I cannot get this thing to connect, I'm getting a Centro! (not my first choice....)
A thought... any chance this could have to do with having Palm Hotsync still installed (from my Treo 700p)?
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated!

On Windows XP, having HotSync installed didn't interference with using ActiveSync with a Treo 800w. This is not exactly the same as your setup, but close enough that I think HotSync is not likely to be the problem.
How did you install WMDC? The downloadable User Guide (PDF pp44-46) refers to running the PC Setup program. Did that part go as expected?
I don't use Vista, so I'm not familiar with the additional complications that might be involved...

  • ITunes 8.0.2 will not launch in Vista SP1

I have a new laptop with a clean Vista SP1 install. Tried installing iTunes 8.0.2, but after I double-click on the iTunes icon to launch it, it won't start. itunes.exe is in the task manager running, but the program will not run. The first time it shows me the user agreement, I click accept, but after that, nothing.
I did a search and found the kb article suggesting I delete the configuration files. When I went to the folder, there were no configuration files to delete. I tried a different ID, run as Administrator, and nothing. Quicktime installs and launches fine. I did a malware/virus check to be on the safe side, and that came back clean. Any suggestions?

Thanks, that was helpful. When I restarted just Quicktime, it launched, but I did not get anything on the screen, just the blank player. That led me to believe it was an internet connection problem. And when I said "clean install", I misstated that . It was clean until I installed some of my stuff, like my work VPN and ZoneAlarm. Turning off ZoneAlarm did the trick. I also re-ran the installation exes as administrator, not sure if that helped or not. I am importing my music library now....

  • OS X not booting after Vista SP1 upgrade

Ok, so I have this really bad problem with my OS X drive.
It's stuck at the grey screen with the loading thing continuously loading without starting OS X.
This all happened after I upgraded my Vista to Service Pack 1.
When going back to Vista a pop-up appeared (from Mac Drive 7).
    http://img180.imageshack.us/img180/2734/capturehu8.jpg - The Pop-up.
Also had a pop-up that said the drive was corrupt.
I've tried using my Leopard install Disc to use Disk Utility, but it can't verify/check or repair my OS X drive.
Tried to reinstall OS X, but it asks me where I want to install it on, but doesn't show me any partition.
Now what can I do to fix it? (preferably without erasing anything)
Also, I've been thinking about completely removing OS X and replacing it with Vista...is it possible and could I still reinstall OS X later if I wanted to?

I've read bad reviews of MacDrive causing corruption.
I use Ultimate and its complete backup PC and file backups so covered there. And same for OS X with multiple SuperDuper clones along with a TimeMachine backup. Covers that side.
Vista SP1 needed to move files around a lot and some 5-7GB (depends on version etc) temp space during the process. So I ran CHKDSK and System File Checker before hand. And boot from Vista DVD and see if you can do anything if those two don't help.
One of the biggest problems is getting too low on disk space.
For OS X, I swear by Disk Warrior 4.1. I would install OS X on an external drive rather than use the DVD, make it your "emergency boot drive" and run DU and Disk Warrior from there.
Those that have backups are ready. And always backup your OS X volume before you apply updates and patches on it as well. You may never need to if you plan for and do some maintenance.
I'd dump MacDrive though. And for OS X, I feel safe / okay with NTFS from MacFUSE 3G.

  • Boot Camp: Driver Update (Windows Vista SP1)

    I'm running a dual boot MBP Unibody w/ OS X & Vista SP1 64Bit
I don't like to install Boot Camp in the Windows OS due to the fact that updating drivers can be a pain when installed via boot camp. However, since I've done so, I've lost the functionality of some of the hardware.
If anyone can point me to a place where I could find drivers for the following I would greatly appreciate it. If I dont get a response, I will attempt to manually extract the drivers from the OS X Install CD.
    Drivers Needed:
Express Card 34 Slot (The Drivers needed to get the slot to work, regardless of card)
Apple I Sight Built in Camera
    IR Receiver
    Trackpad
    System Specs:
    17" MBP Unibody
    Windows Vista SP1 64Bit
    2.93 / 4GB / 9600M GT
Sonnet Tempo eSata Express/34 Card (Rev. A) (I have the drivers for this, but the card isnt recognized when placed in the MBP)

you must run system 1 dvd where bootcamp is, open folders and there choose driver/64bit ..
no choose witch one you like and install with right-click as problem or something like this.
you take working with vista sp1 before and so on ..
i run 64bit win7 rc1 with all drivers exept isight.

  • Satellite L855 - 13G - can not adjust the brightness after update to Win8

    Hello
After update to windows 8 , and installed the latest AMD driver on Toshiba site, I can not adjust the screen brightness using the Fn F2 or F3.

I have installed the Value Added Package, but no change
    Thanks

    Hi
Download the latest driver from Toshiba EU driver page.
Now uninstall the preinstalled driver in device manager (in device manager choose graphic card AMD/ATI and then choose uninstall driver).
After new reboot I recommend installing the driver from Toshiba page.

I have just got my Satellite today and was updating the Toshiba drivers and tried to install a new bios update. I ran the program and the laptop restarted and has gone to a blank screen, power light on, and nothing. This was 10 min ago and stills no change. What should I do? It said not to turn it off.

Just to let you all know. I tried to turn the laptop off at the power button and no luck. So I tuck the battery out and unhooked the power to shut it down. Powered up and started in safe mode ok. What is it with flash updating had it brick a router and a net book

  • Satellite A130: Fn key not working with Vista - only FlashCards

    Hi,
I have been looking around in the forums but I couldn't find solutions to my problem.
I have a satelite A130 and I am running a windows VISTA home basic. I have a problem with my fn functions.
I can only use the flash cards on top of my screen, just by sliding my mouse up on top of my screen.
The "fn" key works only when I start my computer, at the start up but when the computer runs, there is nothing else I could use but my mouse to show my flash cards and use them.
Is there anything I could do?
    Thanks

I have found solution, download from Canadian Toshiba site Toshiba Flash Cards Support Utility via http://209.167.114.38/support/Download/ln_byModel.asp and all will be correct. Don't understand why this driver not included in europian site.

  • Z68A GD-65 Bios Not Updating

    Hi,
I downloaded the latest BIOS update here from the forums (7681vP8) and have my USB prepared using method 1. When it runs the flash it says halting for about 5 seconds and says the bios is being flashed. Then there is a short animation and it says that it's complete and asks to restart. But when I restart the BIOS hasn't changed. According to MSI Control Center I still have V23.2 and when booting up it's still the same version.
I tried looking for solutions and there was something about making sure Boot Sector Protection" is Disabled... but I can't find that option anywhere in the BIOS.
Now i'm stuck and don't know what to do. I did find another thread with the same problem but Svet solved the problem via PM!
Any help would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

Ah that worked. I don't think I was clearing the CMOS correctly. I flashed it again using that BIOS update, then removed the battery etc... and it's now updated.
Thanks for all the help and thanks to PirateDog for the help in the other thread!

This link is from MSI. No worry!
oh right i forgot to tell you
i didn't use this pdf i used the other one so i just downloaded the UEFI 717 and put it in the removable ... then updated etc.
'cause when i tried to do this one
i did the part one but the part 2 i only get 1 file and two texts
as the pic there are 3 files i need to put them but you can see here

in the bios 8.1 the file for 717 has only one file and 2 texts ..
