Satellite U400-15E takes 3min 12sec to boot up

Hey everyone,
As the title says, my Toshiba boots Windows Vista Home Premium in 3min 12 sec, compared to my brother's notebook 1min 42s and my old notebook (this one with XP) 40s.
Is there anything I can do to improve this boot?
Its really ennoying. Any update should I preform?

>isnt Tempro important? Why should i uninstall it?
For me its not important because it sends only a notification that a new driver or tool update has been published on the Toshiba page.
I dont update the drivers and tools if its not really necessary if follow always the advice like; never change a running system ;)
>if i remove it from startup, msconfig. will it decrease boot time or Im forced to uninstall Tempro?
Of course you can firstly try to disable it n msconfig
PS: I found something interesting
+Why does my Windows Vista start so slowly?+

  • Satellite U400-15E - Can't boot from new USB HDD

    Hello.
Recently a bought an external WD My Book with 3TeraByte to use with my Satellite U400-15E. I can use it inside Windows 7 Ultimate with no problem. But if I try to boot from it (by pressing F12 key), the BIOS doesn't even see the drive.
Is this because Toshiba doesn't use Unified Extensible Firmware Interface (UEFI)? UEFI BIOS can overcome the 2.19TB limitation in todays computers easily, like the following Western Digital document explains:
This would allow me to use my new external drive to store a Ghost image of my Toshiba's internal HDD for instance. I mean 3TB and even greater capacities are a reality today. When will Toshiba update their BIOSes to support UEFI?
    Equipment used:
    Toshiba Satellite U400-15E (BIOS v5.00 26-10-2010)
Western Digital My Book Essential 3TeraByte - Firmware v1.014 (USB 3.0 interface)
    MS Windows 7 Ultimate - 32bit version
    Thank you

    Hello
Well... with this same computer, I already tried booting (successfully) from the following pendrive capacities:
    8GB
    16GB
    32GB
    All without problem.
And besides, before having the 3TeraByte WD, I had a 1TeraByte Iomega USB HDD from which I could store Ghost images, because the BIOS would show the 1TB Iomega drive after pressing F12 and Symantec Ghost could also detect the drive without problems.
But with this new 3TeraByte WD... the BIOS doesn't even show the drive after pressing F12.
So when you say +{color:#0000ff}So USB HDDs are not supported{color}+ are you refering booting from USB HDD?
Hum... I'm not sure about that.
I never tried booting an OS from the Iomega.
But that was never my purpose either.
My purpose is for the BIOS (and hopefully Symantec Ghost) to detect the WD USB drive, like it happened before with the 1TeraByte Iomega.
I was using a 1TeraByte Iomega "Select Series" drive.
With the Iomega I could create Ghost images of my Toshiba without a problem.
+{color:#0000ff}But you’re absolutely right: 3TB and greater capacities are reality today but Satellite U400 is older notebook model and not newest one.{color}+
A Laptop computer that has Two 64bit CPU cores and 8GB RAM capacity is not that old!
I think it could be a BIOS limitation, since it's not using UEFI.
    Any more ideas?
    Thank you.

Under device manager/sound a HDMI device is shown as enabled and when connected to an external TV video is shown but no HDMI sound. please can someone help......

I have found out the solution to get HDMI sound to the TV
    1. Right click volume icon on taskbar
    2. Select playback devices
    3. Right Click on SPDIF Interface and select Default Communications Device.
    4. Connect HDMI from TV to Laptop
    5. HDMI Device should be selected automatically.
When HDMI is disconnected the HDMI device is shown as disabled in playback devices whereas previously this device wasn''t shown at all.

  • Bluetooth on Satellite U400

    Hi
I recently bought a new Satellite U400-15e and assumed it had bluetooth installed. After switching on the communication switch I set my phone
to search for devices but it found nothing. I tried searching a few times with the same result. So I now assume that bluetooth is not installed
    on my U400
Can some one tell me how I go about getting and installing bluetooth on my laptop.
    Many thanks.....Bill
ps. Is switching on the communication swith all I need to do to activate bluetooth?

Is switching on the communication switch all I need to do to activate Bluetooth?
No. when the WLAN switch is set to ON you must enable BT using FN+F8 key combination.
After doing this for the first time BT software will be installed and T module will be configured.
When finished you must start BT software end configure it with your external device.

  • Satellite U400 will not usually boot up

    Hi all,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-217 (PSU44E) running Windows 8.
Worked fine until a week ago. Now, when I switch it on, the indicator lights light up, there is a brief hard drive spin (1 second) - and then nothing. The lights above the keyboard stay lit, but the screen stays black.
I read a reset remedy where you take the battery and power cable out and hold the power button for 30 seconds, then plug the power cable back in, boot up, shut down, reinsert battery and boot up again.
However, the machine will still not boot up after the 30-second button hold. I still just get the lights and nothing else.
However, the machine will generally boot up fine on one attempt out of every 30 or so.
It's annoying - any ideas or suggestions very gratefully received.
    Many thanks,
    KaiBosh

    > However, the machine will generally boot up fine on one attempt out of every 30 or so.
In my opinion you should firstly check the HDD
A friend of mine installed Win 8 on new notebook from another manufacturer
After some time the notebook could not boot up I thought its something wrong with motherboard but finally it was just an HDD malfunction
To be honest I dont know if its only HDD issue but in my opinion the HDD is one of the first parts which should be checked
Ok, in worst case it could be possible that mobo malfunctions.

  • Slow boot on Vista Home Premium - Satellite U400-15b

    Hi,
I have just bought Satellite U400-15b and am finding it takes a very long time for Vista to boot up, I have gone into msconfig and disabled the things that I am not using and stuff I think that is not necessary, but still having to wait ages before I can use the laptop. I have enough RAM and processor speed so I dont think the specs of the laptop are a problem
Is there anything that can be done about this slow boot, any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks

    Hello
In my opinion slow boot-up or slow notebook operations depends on right OS configuration. I played with this last months and I am now satisfied how Vista boots and runs on my notebook.
I wrote about it in one another thread and if you have some time have a look under http://forums.computers.toshiba-europe.com/forums/thread.jspa?messageID=134947
Please let me know what do you think about all this.

  • Satellite U400-10j - How to boot from USB flash drive?

    Hello,
    I have a Toshiba Satellite U400-10j.
I have Ubuntu on my USB flash disk, I now want to boot from it.
I am unable to find the option in the BIOS to boot from the Usb flash drive.
Secondly I have noticed that the laptop also has a internal memory card reader.
Could I load Ubuntu onto it then boot from the memory stick as well?
Your Help will be much appreciated.
    Thank you.

I think its not able to boot from an USB stick on this notebook.
The best way is to use a CD. There you can boot from on this notebook and all other notebooks.
In the Internet are a lot of CD versions of Ubuntu and other Linux systems available.
And as Feliks said, its not able to boot from an SD card because this is not listed in the BIOS.

  • Satellite U400-135 overheats

    Hi,
Few weeks back I bought new Toshiba Satellite U400-138 and now I feel it is an inferior design due to many complains I found either here in the support forum or from the people who tried to deal with this series .
Fist of all the overheat issue becomes not affordable as I all about to loose my fingers due to extreme heat comes from the touch pad bottom level !! moreover it usually takes more than 7 minutes to get the windows logon screen while starting up the windows and when you access the windows it keeps showing CPU usage almost 100% for long time just by clicking the internet explorer so i can not do any thing except waiting (it is killing slow) and when i compare it with my old P4 desktop i feel how much i was wrong when i decided to go for the U-400 !
Today I am decided to take the laptop back to local Toshiba dealer and when I was there I tried to touch the lower part of the similar model availbel in the show room and it was extremely hot and when I asked the sales man there he informed me that there are many customers reported the same complain then I have been referred to their service center for inspection and I am so boring now because my new laptop will be serviced after just two weeks only and , I think this model is an inferior design and the only way to get rid of this problem to get the same replaced by something else?!!!!!
your valuable feedback is highly apprciated.

    Hi Will
Ive got a U400 too. Its a U400 which belongs to the PSU40E series.
I use both OS; Vista and XP.
At the beginning the Vista started slowly it was not too slow but slower as the Win XP.
    I investigated a little bit and found a solution;
Firstly I found out that many background processes and applications have been loaded at the beginning of the booting procedure In MSCONFIG you can find these applications.
I have disabled some not necessary (for me) programs and the notebook booted much faster.
Furthermore I have noticed that Tempro tool update helped a lot.
So please check these both proposals.
I'm sure it would help you...
    Regarding the higher touchpad temperature;
Well, my touchpad is also warmer as the rest of the notebook cover but this is nothing unusual because the cooling modules are placed below this touchpad and the left hand side is always warmer due to the heat dissipation on this notebook side
So you shouldnt be worried; this is nothing unusual
Bye & have a nice day

  • Portege M800 now is Satellite U400

After Motherboard Replacement everest for windows reports my M800 as a Satellite U400. Can I modify this ? or i return my laptop to the service center.
    Thanks

I think the DMI information needs updating. The service center should have done this when the mainboard was replaced, so take it back to them and ask them to update it.

  • Battery issue on Satellite U400

I bought my Dad a Satellite U400 10J laptop for his birthday just under 2 years ago. Being over 60 and not too enthusiatic about using a laptop, he left the unit in his cupboard for close to a year before turning on. The first problem materialsed with the laptop not turning on with the "Battery not recognised" error. Subsequent updating of the BIOS got the laptop to startup. However, despite now charging (or appearing to charge) the battery only retains about 10 minutes of charge. This has progressively gotten worse to the point that the only way to use the laptop is to keep it constantly plugged in. Which as you can imagine, limits the utility of having a laptop in the first place.
I did take it back to the retailer and since I had purchased a warrantly extension, was hoping that they would replace the battery. They refused indicating that the battery is not covered and that by not using the laptop intitially after purchase, I had in effect damaged the battery.
Is this possible? Can a battery to irrevocably damaged through inactivity? I think that the period was around 9 months during which he had not even unwrapped it from the box.
If it is, are replacement batteries an option or should I order an orginal Toshiba battery? Also, are there extended life battery options available for this model?
    Thanks in advance

yes, it can take place. It's recommended to charge the battery full even if not used. You should use original Toshiba batteries Don't think that there is extended life battery option available

  • Re: Satellite U400-11Q with Vista has new HDD but no recovery disk

    Hi,
Before I start a very important message: I usually don't work with pc...:-) At my work we have an IT-department for our PC's :-))
However, now I have to work privately with a PC/ notebook and I need help: I am sitting in front of a Toshiba Satellite U400-11Q with a completely newly formatted HDD and unfortunately with NO recovery CD or DVD whatsoever !!
So far I have managed to format the HDD aagain and to put a WindowsVista Home Basic (OEM Software) from my old pc onto this notebook. However, nothing works yet ( I want to get into the Internet etc.)
Therefore I now need to put on all relevant drivers as well as the original TOSHIBA drivers, right ?
How do I do this ? Which drivers to I need ? Do I need to download all relevant drivers (totally 113) one by one from the Toshiba website ?
ANY help is appreciated as I can see myself spending the whole night in front of this PC..
    Thanks,
    M

    Hi Dr.Lamp,
thanks for helping me with listing the drivers as well as giving me a recommendation on the use of Windows 7.
Re Windows 7, unfortunately I only have a "free" VISTA Home Basic at home and therefore I have used this operating system for tonight ! I want to get this PC/ machine running as well as possible as quickly as possible...just unfortunate that its a PC with the need of "thousands of drivers"...
If anyone in cyberspace is interested in reading about my HUGE problems with simply setting up a computer newly, I can at this point simply recommend to you PC fanatics:
Please do put onto the internet decent driver packages to download for somebody like me in a bulk !!! why make life so difficult ? How the hell will I get the right order of driver packages ( which you are listing) on to this PC if I have:
    - no idea where to find the drivers you mention ( I have to google every single one of them)
    - I have already bought a "recovery DVD from Toshiba, but which takes up to 14 days to arrive and costs about 36 EUR
    - I just want to get the computer up and running properly with all licenses legally acquired !
So here I am after about 12 hours of woring on this thing as a newbe:
I have so far this evening managed to firstly install a network driver ( I also had an old VISTA resource DVD at hand) after somehow installing some "recommended network drivers" ( by this recovery DD).
This way I managed to get the wireless LAN connection up and running which is a huge success, because I can now download drivers form INTERNET directly onto the computer.
Currently there is an installation running of Windows VISTA including about 120 updates for this VISTA, so I am busy on these updates...I am nowhere close to the 50% installed mark so I probably will have to get some sleep now and continue tomorrow with you list as well as finding your drivers and installing them in the right order ! What a drag ?! Well, somehow these PC's just cost you TONS of TIME..
Anyway thanks for you help and if you can give me a hint on a shortcut, I would be very happy to hear about it.
    Thanks
    J(M)

Navigate to the following key in the registry - HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
change a value with the following details:
    Data type: DWORD
    Value Name: InitialKeyboardIndicators
Value: 0 = NumLock is turned off after logon, 2 = NumLock is turned on after logon
Restart the Laptop for these changes to take effect.

  • Satellite U400 - loud noise coming from cooling modules

    Hi,
have bought few month's ago Toshiba Satellite U400 and everything was perfect and i just bought it because i do not like sounds.
When i surf on the net i like it to be quite, but these last 5 days it has started to sound.
Toshiba U400 works and it takes out to much "Air" from the side and just sound all the time, even if i open IE or MSN or anything, and before it just did sometime but now it does often.
Please help me because this is very annoying and it sounds to much, and i do not like it, why has this start to happend now and not before? and what can i do about it?
    thnx.

    Hi
This is worth checking. I had a similar problem myself and I noticed that on my wife's profile the fan's behaved but on my profile the fans went crazy.
I did some digging and noticed through Task Manager that a particular process was using an aweful lot of CPU. I did some more digging on the process and discovered it was the Bluetooth driver. I checked in the system tray and sure enough Bluetooth was active. So I logged onto my wife's profile and on her's, Bluetooth was disabled.
So I went back into my profile, disbaled the bluetooth, right click on the Bluetooth icon in the system tray and select disable. All nice and quiet again.
    It's worth a try.

  • Satellite U400 wont turn on & when on wont come back from sleep mode

I have a Satellite U400 and its a year and a few months old.
In the last little bit it has been acting up, and it started with when the computer goes to sleep and goes to the black blank screen it will not come back from that.
The only way to do anything is hold in the power key till it turns off and then turning it back on. This brings me to the warning screen I have turned my computer off incorrectly. It has been doings this for a few weeks and started randomly out of the blue.
Then just today it wouldnt turn on at all, I was pressing the power key and the key itself would light up, and on the bottom right hand side the little lights would light up but wouldnt turn on, I kept pressing it over and over and over again and finally it did turn on. Once on I only used it for a few mins before turning off again and then would do the same thing, I kept pressing the bottom till it turned on. Its been on now and hasnt turned off again.
Not to log ago I had to reformat my computer due to me forgeting my password and had locked myself out of the computer. About a week after that is when the issues started. I am not all that computer smart, to be honest, I do understand something things, I can follow step by step to do something.
I really dont want to pay to have it fix I want to just do it myself and soon as its in great shape and never had any issues before.
Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or why it could be?
I am thinking about reformatting again as I am worried that didnt work out right the 1st time or something.
Or if this is something that needs to be repaired does anyone have a clue on the cost of it?
    Thanks ^_^

    hi aev270,
sounds like a serious problem to me.
try the following: take out battery, cd-rom, hdd and try again.
if it starts up without this components - you got lucky!
this means it probably a software issue (but i dont think so - sorry)
do you see the toshiba logo / bios messages? no - the you are in trouble.
this strange behaviour could depend on many things: defektive components like ram or grafics... or (badest thing) the mainboard...
if you have still warranty on it you should go to a servicepartner having the system checked.

  • Can I install Vista Home Premium 64-Bit on my Satellite U400?

    Hi
In another thread I posted a problem regarding no rescue disk for the pre-installed OS Grrr....
Anyway, I am thinking of upgrading the OS to 64-bit - does anyone know if this is possible on the Satellite U400? I checked the processor specs on Intel website and it seems the processor can....but what about the rest of the machine?
    Thanks,
    Peter

Well, yes. You should take a hardware inventory from Sysinfo or device manager and then for each specific devie locate and download a driver.
When you uprade to Vista 64 bit, then any driver not found during the install can be acquired from your download. Vista is usually well equipped with drivers, except for Toshiba proprietary devices.
