Saving files when system crashes

Programming a Labview 8 system to life test a product.  VI periodically saves test status cycle count, DUT parameters etc.   to a file.  This test will run for months at a time.  If the system crashes need to make sure the data files are not corrupted or lost.
What is the best way/alternatives to protect the data files from system crash, power outage etc.
Thanks
AlleyOops50

A UPS system to provide temporary backup power and trigger a clean close and shutdown of the application is one means in conjuction to writing the data files to multiple drives (say a local C drive AND a remote network drive) should provide a good start to preventing data loss.

  • Can you still access Adobe PDF SAVED FILES WHEN YOU GET A NEW COMPUTER

Can you still access Adobe PDF SAVED FILES WHEN YOU GET A NEW COMPUTER ? Do you loose the files you have saved on you old computer when you get another computer?

I may not be clear on what you are asking here but I'll try an answer anyway since that's the type of guy I am.
If you have PDF files on your old computer, you will need to transfer them to your new computer. You can use a flash drive or CD if needed.
But again, I think I'm not getting what you are really wanting to know. If I'm not, can you give us some more details?

  • Files and directories disappears when system crash

    Hi everyone.
I have a big problem. I have a Java application who creates directories and files. These files are created with ObjectOutputStream on top of FileOutputStream and they are closed correctly. The directories are created with File.mkDirs().
I'm working on Windows 2000 Pro with JRE SE build 1.3.1-b24. The problem is when is simulate a system crash ( pulling the plug ), the system reboot but all the directories and files created during the last VM session are corrupted or simply not existing.
Eventually, this application will be ported on a HP-UP and i'm wondering if the same behavior exists on this system.
    Thanks for your responses.

And why do you think that this is a problem with Java?

  • Best practices for saving files when emailing to the media?

I'm pretty much an Ai imposter. I have Illustrator cs4 (14.0.0) and the way I use it is to cobble my designs together from iStock vector files and a lot of trial and error. Occasionally my husband throws me a lifeline because he is skilled with PhotoShop. As a small business owner, I am dying to find the time to take a course but right now I am just trying to float around the forums and learn what I can. Basically I flail about near the computer and the design sloooowly and somewhat mysteriously comes together. It's getting faster and is kind of fun, unless I get stuck.
This week I had a problem with an ad I designed for a very small community orchestra's printed programs. I send them a pdf first, and when they view it on their screens using inDesign they see the whole image but when it printed it omitted an element (a sunburst in the background). They thought it had something to do with that element being in color rather than greyscale (though there were other elements that survived and they were the exact same color so I was skeptical). I sent a greyscale file, no luck. I sent them the Ai file, but that apparently "crashed" their iD and now they believe I've sent a corrupted file. They aren't very adobe-savvy, either.
I've designed and emailed no fewer than 9 other ads to other print & online media organizations this year and never had a problem. The file looks fine to me in all versions I open/upload/email to myself.
You can see it here if you like: http://www.scribd.com/doc/27776704/RCMA-for-CSO-Greyscale
So here are my specific questions:
    1. How SHOULD I be saving this stuff? Is pdf the mark of a rookie?
    2. What settings should I be looking at when/before saving? I read about overprint, for example, and did try that with one of the versions I sent them to no avail. I don't really know what that does, so I was just trying a hail mary there anyway.
    Thanks for your time!

PDF is the modern way of sending files  but what you might want to do is in this case select the art in question and go to Object>Flatten Transparency
then save it as a pdf or as an ai file when sending the file to them zip it if they have windows based computers or stuffit if they have Mac actually zip is good for both.
It is safer to send it as an archive then as an ai file.

  • Recovering File When Contribute Crashes

    Hi All
I may be clutching at strwas as the saying goes. My
Contribute 3 has just crashed as I made changes to a file on my
website and went to publish the changes.
Is there any way to revive the changes that I had just made?
    Rit

First: have you checked your draft-console? Maybe it's still
there, f.i. when the crash occured during publish.
Second: if you enabled rollbacks (in the menu: Edit,
Administer Websites, Pick your site, Rollbacks) you can go back to
the previous version of the page (in the menu: File, Actions,
Rollback to previous version). Depending on what went wrong, maybe
    you find something usefull here.

  • Problem with parameters to fix opening of old tabs and saving files when a new session is open

    Hello,
Since 2 weeks I have a problem: I always fix my parameters to restore previous session with all my tabs and I choose that Firefox asks me where I want to save my downloaded files. Now each time I close Firefox and I reopen it, it is not taken into account, and 3 tabs are opened: Firefox, Google and Thank to install Zotero! I rechange it, but every time it opens these tabs and not my old tabs. The same for saving files. It goes back automatically to open start page and to save my file in Downloads. Even if I rechange, it comes back the same.
I desinstalled CCleaner (I thought it could be that) but nothing changes!
Please help. Thank you very much!
    Martha

    Here's what I would try:
*Reset Firefox - this should fix the issue but it will change settings like where files are downloaded and what tabs open at startup back to their defaults.
*Then change your download and session restore preferences back to how you like them.
    Here's how:
#Go to Help > Troubleshooting Information.
    #Click the "Reset Firefox" button.
#Firefox will close and reset. After Firefox is done, it will show a window with the information that is imported. Click Finish.
#Firefox will open with all factory defaults applied.
#Open the options window - Tools > Options > General
#In the General panel set Firefox to open your tabs from last time and set Firefox to ask you where to save downloads.
    #Click OK
That should do it. Let me know if this worked.
    Thanks,<br>

  • Preview/QuickView of HP Scan Pro PDF Files Causes System Crash in 10.5.5

Ever since upgrading to 10.5.5 on my iMac Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, I have been having problems with PDF files created by scanning documents using HP Scan Pro. Prior to 10.5.5, the PDFs from HP Scan Pro worked fine and behaved like any other PDF. Under 10.5.5, however, opening one in Preview or trying to view it in the Finder using QuickView causes the whole system to hang. Processor usage jumps to >100% and everything on the system becomes unresponsive. Every app causes a spinning beach ball, the Dock will not display, menus will not pull down, and I can't even call up the Force Quit dialog via the keyboard. There is nothing to be done but force-restart the system by holding down the power button.
Looking in the system.log, it seems that ATSServer is the process that is causing this problem. A dump of the relevent log entries is at the end of the message. The "Non-aligned pointer" and "Incorrect checksum" errors just continue forever until the point when I force a reboot.
Is anyone else experiencing this? Does anyone have knowledge of what changed in ATSServer or PDF handling in 10.5.5 that could be causing this? What is unique about the PDF files created by HP Scan Pro?
    Thanks,
    Drew

Thanks to everyone who has contributed to this thread that I started. I am glad to know it's not just me having these problems.
I have run through all the usual suggestions related to ATSServer problems and problematic fonts: I've cleared caches, checked all the fonts for broken ones, haven't installed any new ones since this problem began, etc., etc.
I've been able to make a few more observations about the problem in my case:
    1. I don't get any crashes while using the HP Scanjet software. I can successfully create a PDF file.
    2. The problem for me only exists on PDF files that I have had HP Scanjet do OCR on and save the text with the image in the PDF. If I scan to create an image-only PDF, it does not cause a problem.
    3. I have now noticed that the problem comes not only when trying to open problem PDFs using Preview or QuickLook, but it also happens when mdsworker, the Spotlight indexer, tries to access the file for indexing. The computer then hangs. I have now had to turn off Spotlight until I can eliminate all the problem PDFs. (The problem only happens with PDFs created since the upgrade to 10.5.5. Older PDFs created with HP Scanjet that were in the Spotlight index earlier do not cause problems.)
    4. These problem PDFs will open correctly in Adobe Acrobat or Acrobat Reader if Spotlight is off, but if Spotlight is on opening the file causes it to be indexed and the system hangs.
In Googling for solutions, I've found that people have sometimes been having problems with interaction between ATSServer and mdsworker since as far back as 10.2.x:

  • Lost files after system crash

Apparently my iBook's battery is getting it's last breaths. My iBook no longer goes to sleep when the battery is low but instead it shuts down. After the last time that happened I noticed a directory in my home has become empty. I mean:
    % ls -la .foo/
returns nothing as opposed to at least the listing of . and .. Also if I try to ls a file that used to be there I get:
    %ls .foo/file
    ls: .foo/file: Input/output error
Disk Utility said that disk passed tests. What might be happening?

    1. You wrote: "DiskWarrior and Tech Tool cost a lot of money."Whether they cost "a lot" is relative. Compared to how much time you'll spend correcting the problem without them, they're dirt cheap. If you can only buy one, buy DiskWarrior, which specializes in directory repair.
In some ways, you're lucky to have a PowerPC-based Mac: DiskWarrior is not yet available for Intel-based Macs.
    2. You wrote: "I just need to correct the file system. Disk Utility does not seem to be able to handle it."Then your options are (a) buy one of the utilities above or (b) reformat the drive. Disk Utility can fix minor directory errors, but the problem you reported is a severe directory corruption issue.
    3. You wrote: "Should just reinstall Tiger?"Not without first correcting the directory corruption, otherwise a basic reinstall — an Archive and Install — may overwrite your data or third-party application files. Depending on how long the directory has been corrupt and how you're performing backups, it's possible some of your backups may also be corrupt, e.g. some of the files corrupted — partially or fully overwritten — due to the directory corruption on your Mac.
    4. You wrote: "If so, my trust on OS X collapses, because regular reinstall in problem situation is what the Windos people do. That should not happen here now should it."Reinstalling the OS is usually one of the last resorts in troubleshooting Mac OS X.
There are a variety of causes for directory corruption such as you are seeing. Many are preventable: see my "Data corruption and loss: causes and avoidance" FAQ for a discussion on this subject.
Bottom line is you either buy a third-party disk repair utility, such as those cited above, or wipe the drive and reinstall. Your call.

  • INDesgin image links broken after saving file across systems

    Hi
We have a scenario involving 3 components:
    1. Linux file server running both SMB and AFP (sharing the same directory thru both protocols)
    2. MacOS 10.5 (Leopard) with INDesign CS3 connecting to the Linux server thru AFP
    3. Windows 2003 server running INDesign CS3 connecting to the Linux server thru SMB (or NFS)
    The scenario:
    1. We create an INDD document and link an image to the AFP share (on the linux)
    2. On the windows 2003 server we open the same document from the SMB share (on the linux) - no error/broken links message is received.
    3. We save the document with a irrelevant to images change, (eg. Adding a text block) to the SMB share
    Here is the problem:
    4. We open the document on the MacOS and receive "Broken links" message atlhough when you look at the path of the image you see the correct AFP path (needless to mention the path is mounted on the MacOS properly and the images are fully accessible)
What can we do, so we will not receive a broken links popup on step #4 of the scenario?
    Thanks

No answers, but a few questions:
Just to be clear, by "broken" you mean missing, not in need of updating, right?
What version of netatalk are you using on the Linux box? Does it implement AFP 3?
What version of InDesign CS3 are you using? Is it fully patched to the last public version (5.0.4.682) or newer?
Are there any potentially problematic characters (e.g., slashes, backslashes, unicode characters, etc.) in the file names or the directories in the full paths?
If you make note of the full path on the Mac when the document is first created, and then compare it very carefully with the same path when you re-open it and get the broken links messages, can you detect any differences? It might also be interesting to place one of the same "missing" images in the document again once you've re-opened it on the Mac, and compare the two paths...

  • Downloading a pdf file, saving it, won't show the full name of the saving file when the name contains a space, stopping the file name.

Downloading a pdf file, the name of the file contains a space in the middle of the file. The name showing on the 'Save' popup is the first few letters up to the space. Works fine on IE8. For instance, a file named "old snail_12345.pdf" would only show "old" (ignore the "s). This is on Firefox 30.0, WinXP Pro.

Is this a problem when you are viewing the file in Firefox's built-in PDF Viewer and using its download button, or when you are using a download button in a web page?
I've seen this problem occur when the server is pushing a different file name than the actual file name (for example, the file name is pdf.asp?id=12345 but the server is sending the name Annual Report.pdf in the headers sent with the file). I'm not aware of a workaround for the user, but for what it's worth, it is easy to fix on the server by replacing the spaces with %20 (the standard substitution used in web addresses).

  • Saving files when restoring HD with Time Machine

My Macbook Pro is a complete mess since upgrading to Mountain Lion...No wireless printing, super slow, freeze ups, up to an hour to boot!  I have tried everying to fix the problems.  My only option now is to restore the hd using Time Machine to before I downloaded Mt Lion.  However, that was about 3 weeks ago and I don't want to lose documents I have changed or created since then.  Can I retore the hard drive without restoring/losing the docs, photos, etc. I've made since installing Mountain Lion? All I want to restore is the operating system.

you were restoring the wrong thing. no user data is ever stored in the applications themselves. it's stored in your home directory. but it seems that your attempt to restore itunes.app has corrupted it. so go to the main Applications folder and delete iTunes.app. then restore it from TM. TM should let you do it. stop and post back if it doesn't.
also restore the following items from your home directory:
homedirectory/music/itunes (warning: it is big!) and the file homedirectory/library/preferences/com.apple.itunes.plist. once all those things are restored start itunes.

  • Locating corrupt files after system crash

I´ve got the spinning ball fom H after a program got stuck. I managed to stop the program, but I had to hard-restart the Powerbook by holding the power switch down. This have happened before and have ended with corrupted files taking way to much space.
I have now deleted all program related files using spotlight, but this time there is one or more files which have "stolen" 20Gb from my HD.
Is there any easy way to locate this/these files to make my Powerbook "healty" again? I´ve got the message to clean up more space on my HD (have just 300Mb left).
I have checked disk rights using the disk utility but this did not helped. I have not run fsck in Terminal....
    Any help higly appreshiated

When making a clone with Carbon Copy Cloner, if there is any part that is incomplete, a left over large file from the /Volumes/ directory may get stuck there filling your hard drive. Check with Bombich's website how to remove it.
Regardless of which backup program you have, since you have a clone, I would shut down the machine, and disconnect the clone. Boot off the installer CD that came with the Mac, or newer retail CD, and repair the directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
In addition, you can free some space using http://monolingual.sourceforge.net/ (be careful not to remove any of the Latin languages). I would burn to CD and DVD once you have enough space to do any extra data files you don't use frequently. If you use all of it frequently, you will want to upgrade your hard drive to a bigger hard drive.
Disclaimer: Reference to links I make to my Macmaps.com website are a for your information only type reference. I do not get any profit from this page, and it is open to the public.

This is the low level device driver used by all NI hardware device
drivers. PAL stands most probably for Platform Abstraction Layer and
what that means it is providing an uniform device driver API for
managing memory, IO addresses, DMA channels and Interrupts. Most
probably this NIPAL device driver API is almost the same on all
platforms NI develops modern hardware drivers for. This allows easier
porting of device drivers to new hardware as the big work for porting a
hardware driver is about porting this NIPAL device driver.
    I
would not think that disk writing is the real culprit here, but it may
trigger a problem occuring earlier during VXI access.
