Saving session in awesome WM

Is there any way to save session (position and state of all windows) in awesome?
Suspend-to-ram is generally good, but it's a hassle to reopen and reallocate all the windows after reboot, e.g. when kernel has updated. Using autorun does not solve problem either, because some apps like gVim can't be assigned to one tag in config.

I don't think Awesome can remember precise placement on a per-app basis.  You can use a session manager, plus the "rules" section of rc.lua to assign apps to specific tags and assign default layouts to each tag. You'll still need to rearrange individual clients, but it'll take some of the tedium out of it.  I'd be willing to bet you could write some lua scripts to get more precise placement, but probably not to remember exactly where each client was on reboot.

  • How to recover saved sessions after a system recovery with backup [DUPE: /questions/770295]

    Computer kept crashing and wasn't able to log on, so I had to do a system recovery with backup. Was wondering if there was anyway to get back my saved sessions that I kept.

    Probably not. A System Restore can replace the current file sessionstore.js with an older version and if that happens then you lose that session unless you have made a backup of sessionstore.js before doing the system restore.

  • FireFox STOPS saving session store backup!

    For a few years it's a VERY BIG problem with FireFox!
    It STOPs session saving after a while.
    IT IS NOT a plugin problem!
    IT IS NOT a settings problem!
    IT IS NOT a my stupidity problem!
    IT IS SERIOUS PROBLEM in FIREFOX CODE!
    I do use Firefox..... NO! I do use all the mainstream browsers since first versions of Netscape and IE born!
    In my PCs all 5 current mainstream browsers are installed - IE, FF, Chrome, Opera and Safari (for Win)
    All these browsers have their own pros and contras and all they are in use concurrently or momentarily.
    Mostly used are FF and Opera. Chrome is less used (due to its extremal privacy violation). IE is used for particular purposes primarily ActiveX related, and Safari is rarely used for checking compatibility.
    I'm using FF since v!.x or 2.x
    I have 14 FF profiles in my FF AppData folder and I KNOW WTF I SAY!
    I can't particularly remember what FF version was firstly appeared to be fault, but it was i long ago. A few years ago. I can definitely say it wasn't some of stable 3.x versions.
    Usually I have hundreds of tabs opened at the moment. (Maximum counted is about 370 and it was Opera 9.x on the PC w/1.5GB of RAM)
    It's not a 'quantity' game. I do read hundreds of pages every day and forced to open more and more tabs looking for additional info. I can't close many tabs before I will have complete problem description in my mind and can point and save just a valuable info, which really helps to solve problem. Frequently I should solve a few problems at the same time. While some info is inaccessible or not yet found I switch to another problem and trying to solve it. It's a job and creative process.
    I was very discouraged when I lost a few hundreds of tabs 1st time (since great recovery options first time appeared in browsers). I thought the problem is random, later I thought the problem will be solved in the next releases of FF because it's unbelievable that millions of peoples in the world are using FF and no one have reported such a serious bug. Later I just tried to save sessionstore files manually in the middle of work. I don't like to complain neither ask for help. At first I do my own research and trying to help others with many complicated things. But this problem too complicated for me. FF's sources should occupy a few hundred megs. I should spend at least months to explore code w/o any warranty I could fix the problem. It's too expensive... People who develop this code can fix it many times faster end easier.
    When I saw FF changed session recovery format (which means for me complete module rework) about a year ago and hoped the problem will now should be completely resolved, but NO! It was not resolved in any way.
    I'd experienced this problem ALWAYS with any version of FF (for at least a few years), on ANY PC (I have a few decades) and any modern Windows OS (XP/V/7/32/64/etc), with a 500MB profile with a few plugins installed and with completely new and clear default profile!
    Just try yourself. Setup new profile and work a few days or weeks on any theme(s). Do not close tabs (at least ones, which you wanna explore once more). If your PC has 2-4Gb of RAM you will notice FF stopped to save session info after you will have a 50-100 tabs opened (you'll see sessionstore.js or session-backups\*.js script files reached 15-20-30MB long and stopped to change and it's LastMod date/time(s) are frozen) and after the moment some stupid most probably Ad-related and most probably "Java related" script will hang your FF you will notice all recent tabs (opened a few minutes or a few days ago) gone from recovery.
    I just lost a two days of hard work in a 100-200 tabs related on rare player HW/SW recovery and modding (but God saved a few hundred of previous tabs related to some mobile hacking). I've noticed FF started to hang more and more and checked previous.js, recovery.bak, recovery.js was last modified on Apr, 14 but today is Apr, 16! I've lost one more hour trying to save tabs, even installed Session Manager, promised session saving on user demand but after a half hour of action against hanging FF, plugin showed me that I have NO ONE tab to save. I've managed to copy a few URLs to the text file before FF have completely fallen.
    FF is less RAM consuming but more exposed to CPU overload than WebKit based Chrome and Opera. Safari for Win is just a bunch of bugs. Old Presto based Opera was really fast and resource effective but it was dropped due to "technology" requirements. Chrome and Opera save session info reliable (only rare random problems could occur), but they fall sooner because of RAM overload. And certainly FF has best plugin collection which overcomes Crome's and especially Opera's.
    On other hand Opera has integrated Session manager and you can save all or particular tabs and windows at any moment.
    Sure such feature should be integrated to all browsers. It should be reliable, made at native C level, not at limited and unreliable JS/plugin level as it done in FF Session Manager plugin. User should have an option to save his work at any moment and in any situation, then open it anywhere. Cloud sync can not be offered as the only option. There are many security related objects around and I will never send them (by my will) to any clouds except ones made and completely controlled by me or my structure. I've enough hardware, knowledge and other resources to save my data on my own storage. :)
    On my hand today there are too much "technologies" around. That's ENOUGH!
    Reliability and resource economy should be preferred as the main goal!
    If someone of devs is ready to spend enough time and fix this really annoying and resource consuming issue feel free to contact me and tell me what logs to collect on event.
    P.S. It's time to appear some JS-ProcessExplorer (executed scripts manager) for Browser. Scripts became too powerful, resource expensive and aggressive.
    AdBlock can't eliminate all (btw it's main goal is Ads).
    There should be the way to explore and kill particular scripts by hand, ones which hang and other way disturb stability of browser and user's work! I see no other way out.

    Okay, that's a lot of information. I think the key part for support purposes is this:

    You're not the first person to report that the sessionstore.js or recovery.js file stopped updating with new activity. However, it's rare enough that I can't recall whether we have gotten to the bottom of it in a previous thread. I'll see whether I can search it up.
    Meanwhile, someone might be able to come up with a way to watch for problems and extract some debug information, but I'm not personally familiar with such tools.

  • Saving session state during pagination

    See
    http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=24317:152
    I hacked into the PPR function to save the checkbox value into session state during pagination.
    Is there a way to do something similar for checkboxes in the report itself rendered using htmldb_item.checkbox()?
    Or is this an ill-advised effort?
    [The UI requirement here is clear...I have a bunch of items over many pages and I want to select them using checkboxes and have the selections remembered as I paginate back and forth.
    If you use Yahoo Mail, Compose a new message, click on the Insert Addresses link and it pops up a window with all your contacts, you can select them using checkboxes and go to the Next/Previous page and it remembers the selections]
    Thanks

    See
    http://htmldb.oracle.com/pls/otn/f?p=24317:152
    Click on the Create/Reset collection button to initialize your own private collection to play with.
    The checkboxes are remembered as you paginate thru the resultset. Basically, the state of the checkboxes is saved into session state using htmldb_Get before calling the PPR function to get the next/previous rows.
    Carl, let me know what you think of the approach. Is it a viable approach? Any caveats?
    [Unfortunately, I had to to make a copy of the builtin html_PPR_Report_Page function to make the above modification in it, didnt see a way to avoid it]

  • Saving session state on authentication

    Hey all...
    In all my applications that interact with each other, I am running an application-level process on authentication which loads two preferences into applicaton-level items. I am seeing different results when jumping into different applications even though the executing code is the exact same in all applications, a stored procedure in the database. Here is a simplistic example.
    When application A calls a page in application B, an "on authentication" application-level process of application B reads two preferences and appropriately populates them into two application-level items of application B. When application A (or B for that matter) calls application C, the same-coded application process in application C attempts to populate two application-level items, but one of them is not being populated.
    It appears that the problem lies only with application C because regardless of whether I come from application A or application B, the same problem happens.
    When I go from application A to application B in debug mode, I see the following in reference to this problem:
    0.05: Computation point: ON_NEW_INSTANCE
    0.05: ...New Session = True
    0.05: Processing point: AFTER_AUTHENTICATION
    0.05: ...Process "Setup Seed Data": PLSQL (AFTER_AUTHENTICATION)
    1.11: ...Session State: Save Item "ORIGINAL_APP_ID" newValue="104" "escape_on_input="Y"
    1.11: ...Session State: Save Item "ORIGINAL_PAGE_ID" newValue="7" "escape_on_input="Y"
    When I go from either application A or application B to application C, I see the same debug messages except for an additional line that doesn't make sense to me. Following is an example:
    0.05: Computation point: ON_NEW_INSTANCE
    0.05: ...New Session = True
    0.05: Processing point: AFTER_AUTHENTICATION
    0.05: ...Process "Setup Seed Data": PLSQL (AFTER_AUTHENTICATION)
    1.11: ...Session State: Save Item "ORIGINAL_APP_ID" newValue="104" "escape_on_input="Y"
    1.11: ...Session State: Save Item "ORIGINAL_PAGE_ID" newValue="7" "escape_on_input="Y"
    <strong>1.11: ...Session State: Saved Item "ORIGINAL_APP_ID" New Value=""</strong>
    In all three applications, the exact same code is being run which determines if the preferences "is not null", and if so, sets the two preferences in the "current" application. I'm happy to show you the code of my stored procedure that does this if you like.
    The only thread I've seen in the forum that looks similar is the following:
    Re: Session state issues
    I've followed its suggestion of deleting and recreating the application-level item, but that did not solve my problem.
    I'm confused as to why the new line indicating "Saved Item" is showing up in the application C. Is there documentation available to explain the difference between "Save Item" and "Saved Item" when running a page in debug mode?
    Shane.

    Here are the different componets that are in play and some notes that may help understand the situation:
    - the failure happened when the two application-level processes below were just one process. works fine when they are split up.
    - the trick of using the SESSION as the USER_ID is because I want the preference to only be good for the session, not everytime the user logs in. ( i learned this trick from the ApEx forum! )
    - the stored procedure is in a package owned by a separate schema than the built-in ApEx user.

  • I deleted my saved sessions in session manager in error. Can I recover these in any way?

    As above

    *http://sessionmanager.mozdev.org/documentation.html
    There is an option to have Session Manager automatically back up your current browsing session at browser shutdown, ask you if you want to save or never save. By default it backs up the ten previous browsing sessions and crashes (deleting older ones). This can be changed in the Startup and Shutdown options on the General Options page. Old sessions are only removed on browser shutdown. Restarting or recovering from a crash will not remove old sessions. Warning, the backup is made when the browser actually shut downs, so if you close the browser by "X"ing out of all the windows, only the last window will be saved. If you want to save the last session, use the File->Exit command or better yet manually save it or use the autosave feature.

  • Saving session state

    Hi Everyone!
    We are looking for an easy-to-use solution for saving the session state in whole.
    (We are aware that it is possible to save the sesion state for a single item.)
    Our goal is to get a single commando which restores an whole session to another session. We would like to be able to save a session, purge the session (because of old age) and restore it's session state again to a new session.
    any ideas?

    Hi,
    I was thinking that a pointer to the Session object could be stored in a database on the initial loginAre you by any chance referring to the pointer similar to the one that is used in C? If so I guess it is not available in java.
    One possible solution where you can persist data across sessions is by the use of stateful session beans. Also you could experiment with the different scopes of the object for achieving your goal.
    I hope this helps you. In case I have missed out something please do post again.

  • Problems with playback and saving sessions

    Hi, guise!
    I've run into two annoying problems:
    1) For some unknown reason, the playback in new sessions is limited to -3db. So when I start a new 16/41000 session and import a commercial mp3 song just to check out its spectrum or tone, it's only hitting -3d on a meter, though it should be like 0db and clipping. Track volume = 0, master volume = 0. I've never seen this before, it's been happening to my Audition for a week or so, and I'm pretty shure I didnt change anything.
    2) When saving huge sessions with like 35-45 tracks or so, sometimes it suggests to save unchanged audio files, too (so I end up with Overheads, Overheads (2), (3), (4), etc. That's the most annoying thing, baaargh!
    Any pieces of advice?

    Hmm... go to Preferences > Multitrack, and reset the Stereo Panning mode to L/R cut logarithmic rather than -3dB center. This won't happen then.

    Yes, it's annoying. If you are absolutely sure that they aren't changed, then delete the extra ones. You might want to have a look at Mediasweeper too.

  • Saving session data for different browsers

    If I open 2 or more Firefox windows the same session data is saved across the browsers, rather than one for each browser window. Is there a way to handle this?

    Not if you are using cookies as the session tracking mechanism.
    Basically Firefox is treating all its windows as being the same internet browsing "session".
    So it shares cookies across all the open windows. IE does a similar thing for windows opened from links, and File:New Window.
    Because the Servlet container keeps track of your session via the "session cookie" that means that your session data is saved across browsers.
    If you disable the cookie session mechanism on the Servlet container (I think you can do that) and just use the urlEncoding rather than cookies to retain the session, you could probably accomplish your goal. However it would be tricky, and the SessionID would be completely visible in the address bar.

  • Saving sessions in the database...

    Hi there, I'm trying to save a session object ( not a J2EE session but a custom one ) in an Oracle database. I save the session in a table with a BLOB column and some other varchar columns... Whenever I want to write a blob, the application freezes... When I want to read a file, it's ok... Anyone knows of this problem? Here is the code of my write method:
      private void writeSession(CapSession pSession) throws Exception
        static final String writeObjSQL      = "BEGIN " +
                                             "  INSERT INTO intranet_sessions(session_id, session_last_access, session_timeout, session_value) " +
                                             "  VALUES (?, ?, ?, empty_blob()) " +
                                             "  RETURN session_value INTO ?; " +
                                             "END;";
        CallableStatement stmt = conn.prepareCall(writeObjSQL);
        stmt.setString(1, pSession.getSessionId() + pSession.getPassword());
        stmt.setLong(2, pSession.getLastAccess());
        stmt.setLong(3, pSession.getTimeout());
        stmt.registerOutParameter(4, java.sql.Types.BLOB);
        stmt.executeUpdate();
        BLOB blob = (BLOB) stmt.getBlob(4);
        OutputStream os = blob.getBinaryOutputStream();
        ObjectOutputStream oop = new ObjectOutputStream(os);
        oop.writeObject(pSession);
        oop.flush();
        oop.close();
        os.close();
        stmt.close();
        conn.commit();
    }Thanks!

    Try this
    conn.setAutoCommit(false);
    PreparedStatement pstmtIns = conn.prepareStatement
                   ("INSERT INTO intranet_sessions" +
                        "(session_id, session_last_access, session_timeout, session_value) " +
    " VALUES (?, ?, ?, empty_blob()) ");
    pstmt.setString(1, pSession.getSessionId() + pSession.getPassword());
    pstmt.setLong(2, pSession.getLastAccess());
    pstmt.setLong(3, pSession.getTimeout());
    pstmt.execute();
    PreparedStatement pstmtSel = conn.prepareStatement
                   ("select session_value from intranet_sessions where session_id = ? for update");
    pstmtSel.setString(1, pSession.getSessionId() + pSession.getPassword());
    ResultSet rs = pstmtSel.executeQuery();
    while(rs.next())
         BLOB blob = (BLOB) rs.getBlob(1);
         OutputStream os = blob.getBinaryOutputStream();
         ObjectOutputStream oop = new ObjectOutputStream(os);
         ObjectOutputStream oop = new ObjectOutputStream(os);
         oop.writeObject(pSession);
    oop.flush();

  • Saving session state in database table rather in websever for Ordering App

    Hi all,
    Ours is a ordering application (telecomm) domain.
    Currently, we are storing user sessions data (Order shopping cart session data) in middle tier (iPlanet web server) which inturn consumes lot of memory resources.
    Shopping cart could be in MBs if order is a huge business order.
    So in order to not to overtax web server (middle tier), we are thinking of storing session data directly in a database table to relieve the overhead on web server and make use of database for storage.
    I read that APEX (html db) is already using this "single metadata table" approach for session data management. But we are not using HTML DB to really look into.
    Can some one advise how to go about storing "user session data" directly in a "database table" for both storage and retrieval purposes instead of storing it in "webserver".
    How does this "metadata table" structure looks like. Is it more generic ?
    Really appreciate your time and help/suggestions.

    Joel,
    Thanks for your response. sorry, i meant to say that "the current application does not use APEX but will look into it".
    To build this is an utterly non-trivial exercise. Oh - it may not be so hard to save session state to a table when you POST a page. But you may want to reference this in many places, and it's a question of can you change all of these references to indirect references from session state in your application.In order to free up the load on webserver, we want to maintain session management in database. Could you please explain the above little more :
    How do we maintain the "user session" with "database table" ?
    Do we need to store "session data" at java object level or by page in database table ? How does the structure of this "metadata table" looks like.
    Thanks for your time.

  • Saving Sessions 100% Correctly For Launching On Another Computer

    Hi, I have GB 2.02. On Mac OS 10.4.11. PowerBook G4 17".
    I have made a few songs, some have actual recorded audio in them, some have samples, and some of course have the midi stock sounds in them.
    What I was wondering is, where the heck are all these files stored ? The midi stock sounds I am not worried about because I know they are just "in the program" therefore the session. But where are all my recorded real audio files ? And the "Samples" ?
    Basically what I want to do is save my Garage Band songs properly with EVERYTHING in proper tact so that I can load them up on another computer or wipe my computers drive instal Leopard and then load them back into my computer and have them play 100% flawlessly like they should with out missing anything.
    Now in Pro Tools you have to save the "Session" file itself, plus the "Audio Files" folder.. Now that makes sense. See all the real audio files are recorded and kept in that "Audio Files" folder, so there is no confusion and you have total control. BUT when I went to my Garage Band folder, there seems to only be the "Session" file(s) and thats it. Where are all the actual audio files ? And how do I save them with the session ? Or is it all automatically in the "Session" file itself ? I don't understand, can someone shed some light please ?
    How do I do this properly so I don't lose my songs or ANY of its elements ?
    Thanks -

    If you need a database, use a database.
    The client doesn't do anything "on the server". The client just asks the server to do something with the data it provides. So make sure that the client sends the savegames and user IDs and load requests to the server process, and let the server worry about the implementation and storage.

  • Why did I lose Session Manager, as well as all my DOZENS of saved sessions (online course placemarks etc) with the upgr to 17? NEVER an issue, using FF forever

    After installing latest ff (17.0) session manager was no longer installed. re-installed, but all previous sessions (as I stated dozens, with placemarks where I left off with online courses, pages with possible Christmas shopping items, etc etc) are ALL GONE. Been using FF for at least 10 years and this never happened before. Not a happy open source camper :(

    Are you still using that profile where your extensions were installed?

  • AA3 library of audio clips and saving session

    Either I have lost my mind, or I've changed a setting somehow, or I'm just now noticing something that may have been this way forever. I could swear if you have 5 audio clips in your library and only 3 in the multi-track, when you save the session, all 5 clips should still be in the library when you re-open the session. I have not chosen to "close unused media" at any time.
    In trouble-shooting, I open AA3 with an empty library, import 5 files into the library, save session, close session, attempt to open session (and looking at the "component files" box while in the "open" dialog), I do not see any files in this area. I have "show file info" checked. I can understand if no files are in the multi-track, this list would be empty, but it should still show what files are in the library panel.
    If I go back to where I've imported 5 files into the library, place 1 clip in the multi-track, save session, close it, re-open the session, only 1 file is in the library. This is strange to me because I could swear I've been able to import all the files I might need for that session and keep them in the library until I'm ready to place them in the multi-track and I could save and open as many times as needed (while never choosing to close unused media), and all the files I imported would remain in the library regardless - almost like AA3 is automatically closing unused media and deleting those clips from my library. Is this the way it is and I'm just now noticing this? I've worked with AA3 since it was released...

    My impression is the same as your's but I'm not at my studio PC at the moment to try it.
    You can use this tool to see exactly what files (along with some other useful things) are being used in an AA session once you exit AA.
