Scale external SWF

Hi!
I'm trying to load a Flex 4 SWF into the application, but I want that the external swf to fill all the application while maintaining the aspect ratio. The code is above:
ResizableSWF.mxml

<s:Application xmlns:fx="http://ns.adobe.com/mxml/2009"
xmlns:mx="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/mx"
xmlns:s="library://ns.adobe.com/flex/spark"
addedToStage="onAddedToStage(event);"
width="290"
height="149"
>
<fx:Script>

private function onAddedToStage(event:Event):void {
stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.SHOW_ALL;
stage.align = StageAlign.TOP;
this.width = stage.stageWidth;
this.height = stage.stageHeight;

</fx:Script>
<s:BorderContainer id="borderContainer"
cornerRadius="40">
<s:layout>
<s:VerticalLayout paddingTop="40"
paddingLeft="40"
paddingRight="40"
paddingBottom="40"
/>
</s:layout>
<s:Label text="Label"/>
<s:HGroup>

</s:HGroup>
<s:Button label="Button"/>
</s:BorderContainer>
</s:Application>

usePreloader="false"
>
<s:SWFLoader id="tretas"
width="100%"
height="100%"
autoLoad="true"
scaleContent="true"
verticalAlign="middle"
horizontalAlign="center"
source="ResizableSWF.swf"
maintainAspectRatio="true"
/>
</s:Application>
When I run ResizableSWF and resize the window, the content is scale perfectly...
... but when I load it in ScaleTest, the content is also scaled when I resize the window, but it doesn't fill all the window.
What am I doing wrong?
Thanks for the help!

I don't know!
I'm now doing it manually using scaleX and scaleY.

• HELP PLEASE - loading external swf scale problem

I have a Flex 3 Actionscript Project. Basically all it does it take some flash vars, set the sound volume, and load an external swf using a loader and add the loader as a child. The problem is I want the loaded external swf to be scaled to fill the entire stage, even if it distorts it, and that doesn't seem to be happening.
I really need to resolve this. ANY HELP APPRECIATED.

Thanks for the reply!
Here's basically what my code looks like (note: I cut some stuff out that wasn't relevant for the sake of clarity).
private var swfLoader:Loader = null;
public function MySwfContainer()
stage.scaleMode = StageScaleMode.EXACT_FIT;
stage.align = StageAlign.TOP_LEFT;
var request:URLRequest = new URLRequest(swfUrl);
swfLoader = new Loader();
swfLoader.contentLoaderInfo.addEventListener(Event.COMPLETE,SWFLoader_Complete);
swfLoader.load(request);
private function SWFLoader_Complete(event:Event):void
addChild(swfLoader);
What I am observing is that if a swf larger than the stage area is loaded it clips it rather than scale it down and make it fit.

• Unable to load external swf which has runtime sharing with another swf.

Hi,
I am getting issues on loading external swf say "importer.swf" file into another swf file say "loader.swf" for second time like
ReferenceError: Error #1065: Variable testSymbol is not defined. VerifyError: Error #1014: Class testClass could not be found.

In the external swf "importer.swf", i am trying to import the symbol "testSymbol" from another swf file say "exporter.swf", which exports through runtime sharing option for the symbols.
I am having some buttons in loader.swf file and on each button click i am loading different swf files into the loader.swf after unloading the previous one.
I am able to load and unload different swf files but unable to load the importer.swf file which is sharing symbols from external swf and that too for the second time i.e., when i click the button twice.
When trying to debug with flash debugger, all the other swf files are being unloaded before loading of another swf but the swf which is sharing symbols/classes with another swf is not getting unloaded.
Output when i am trying to load two files example and importer files into loader.swf file on two different button clicks. On first button click example.swf is loaded. On second button click , example.swf is unloaded and importer.swf is loaded which is successful. On first button click again importer.swf is unloaded and example.swf is loaded. On second button click again, example.swf is unloaded and importer.swf is loaded, here i am getting issues shown above.

I got my answer. I had to append the photo url to the 'movie' value of the javascript embed method. Like this:

Thanks,

• Loading an external swf with a loader

I have a .swf that loads different external swf's into
loaders based on what frame it is in. For all but one frame this
works fine. There's no lag, they load quickly and can be interacted
with with no problem. But, for one .swf it gets really choppy. The
swf itself runs fine but once it is loaded into another swf through
the loader the performance really goes down the drain. I guess I am
wondering if anyone has any suggestions or perhaps different
methods I should try. Thanks in advance.

It isn't creating it on the fly.
Insert a new symbol and give it the instance name
placeholder_mc. Drag that onto your timeline and scale it so that
it is the exact same size as your external swf. Then just align the
empty movie clip on the stage where you want to align the external
swf.
loadMovie("external.swf",_root.placeholder_mc);
This just tells it "Okay, take this external flash file, and
stick it INTO that empty movieclip"

• Loading an external swf with coordinates

I am using a simple loadMovieNum("movie2.swf",1); to load an
external swf into my current swf (movie1). I would like to position
movie2.swf within movie1. I'm sure I need to convey the x,y
coordinates, but I am not sure where to start. Any help would be
appreciated.

• Loading an external swf as a different size?

Hello - this seems like it would be pretty easy, but I couldn't figure it out from searching through Flash's help documentation.
I'm using Flash CS3 and AS2.0. I'm using the loadMovie function to load an external swf into an empty movieclip. The problem is that the external swf is bigger than the frame I am loading it into, so I'd like to load it in with specific width/height parameters (basically load it in and scale it down).
What would be the loadMovie command to do that with?
Thanks!!!

You need to wait for the movie to load before you can change its size. To know that the movie is loaded you want to use the MovieClipLoader.loadClip method instead of loadMovie. The loadClip method supports having an evemt listener so that you can know when the file is loaded and ready to use. If you look up the MovieClipLoader.addListener method in the help docs, there is an example there that should get you thru most of it. It uses an onLoadInit event listener which is what you'll want to use since you need to wait for the swf file to be loaded and ready for use before you try to affect it.

• Button from External SWF to Play Movie in Main SWF

Hi Guys,
Ok I'm working in Flash 8, Action Script 2;
I'm building a website, in which the 'Gallery Page' has a link to an external swf file, which is a scrolling clip of thumbnails.
What I want to do, is create each thumbnail into a button, which will then play a Movie Clip from a frame located in the Main swf file.
(So basically, each thumbnail button is a small photo, will play that photo in a large scale as a movie)
eg.
thumbnail1_btn needs to go to main swf and play movieclip1.mc, frame 1
thumbnail2_btn nends to go to main swf and play movieclip1.mc, frame 2
I'm unsure of the code for this? Or if I've built this up wrong?
If someone could help me out, that would be great!

If you haven't set _lockroot on the loaded SWF, than a simple _root call from the loaded SWF will talk to the main SWF.
IE:
on(release){
_root.gotoAndPlay(1);
If you did set the lockroot, then call the level directly, via:
on(release){
_level0.gotoAndPlay(1);
Once on the root level, you can access a movie clip as normal.
So:
on(release){
_level0.movieClip1.gotoAndPlay(1);
will call the movie clip "movieClip1" which resides on the timeline of _level0 (which is main.swf in your instance), and tell it to jump to the first frame and start playing.

• External swf in wrong place

I have finally figured out how to call an external swf file
(shouldn't have been as hard as I made it) Nonetheless, when I
preview is, besides getting a bunch of errors about sandboxes, the
external swf file is not anywhere close to where I placed the movie
clip loader? Thanks for any help anyone can provide...

Well, I guess I can place my movie container somewhere
completely different from where I want it to appear on my final swf
file. I don't think that's the most elegant way to go about it, but
one question I do have is how to I keep the bitmap images that are
off that swf file not to appear, and to make it not scale? Right
now, when the external swf file comes on screen, excess parts of
the image appear and it scales? Thanks.

• External swf loader probs

HI, we have a situation which has done our heads in for two
days non-stop,
We have a pre-loader loading the area's and then have the
loadmovienum to load in additional swf's now when we use the nav
bar at the top of the page, it opens the right file but when it
loads the page it moves onto the next load movie for some reason
with out stopping, even though the stop command is in place....
We have uploaded the dodgy version which you can test and see
what problems we are having, the contact page is the same as the
service page for the moment, but you will see the contact page
display the "cloned" service page then it restarts the whole movie
Here are the URL's to the zip file with all the swf's and
fla's including the live what we have done so far online version.

PS WE ARE USING FLASH 8

Ok... I figured out how to get the swf to play correctly. I
changed my publish settings to Flash 8 Player. This worked in
getting the external swf to load... Now I ran into a new problem,
hopefully someone can help me with this.... I need the swf to load
in a VERY specific location, and at the EXACT scale as the original
swf file. I have attempted to accomplish this by opening the
original file that I am attempting to load. I selected all of the
elements on the page, and looking at the X and Y coordinates, as
well as the over all pixels measurement... then I placed these in
numerals in the fields for the loader component in the "mother"
file. I previewed it, and the placement and scale are wrong... how
do I overcome this?? How can I control where the loader component
loads and at what scale?

• Get external swf width height

Hi,
I'm am trying to load an external swf file using a different swf that is on a different domain. I have noticed that it is possible to use addChild on the external swf, but when I try to get its contents width and height using contentLoaderInfo I get a security sandbox error.
It seems it is possible to fix it by using Security.allowDomain("*") and Security.allowInsecureDomain("*") in the external file.
And now it's get tricky, the external swf file is a file that users upload to my site so I don't have control on the code so I can't add the "allowDomain" part.
The second swf (the host file that loads the external file) is a file that I let others to embed on their site.
The intresting thing is that when I share the host swf on facebook there is no problem, and I don't even need to add the code for "allowDomain" on the external file.
I it makes a different, I use HTTPS protocol to access to the external swf.
I tried to load the crossdomain.xml file, but it didn't help.
What can I do? the only data I need to get on the external swf is its width and height to scale it to the host file.
Thank you

Thank you.
Now it looks i am getting close but not exacly there.
Everytime I get near something else doesn't work properly.
Now I get the dimension after two things:
I added 'secure="false"' to the https' crossdomain and added LoaderContext to when I load the external event:
context.securityDomain = SecurityDomain.currentDomain;
context.checkPolicyFile = true;
Now you probably ask what's the problem.
well I have no idea why, but it looks like the external swf file I load (which is as2, but I still didn't check if it matters) keeps on jumping between its first frame and second frame ( The swf has two frames). If you having hard time to imaging what I mean, lets say this jumping between frames is really not recommended for people with Epilepsy.
It has a stop() action, but sadly the player doesn't care.
let me remind you that if I only addChild the Loader (without the context) it looks fine, but I need the width and height to resize the swf.
anyone knows what can cause this?
and thx again martinjamesroberts1 for the link, it put me on the right track.

• Stage Resizing on "Clicked" External SWFs

Hello everyone!
Thanks for checking this out.
This has been bugging me for almost a week now. I hope I may find some assistance here. I've Googled for this and everytime I encounter an article with the solution and people saying it worked great for them, I thought it's going to help me too, but didn't. I'm pretty sure I did exactly what was instructed but mine is just weird.
I hope you can try to look at my files and see what's wrong, anyway this is just a simulation of my real project (which has the same problem) at a very small scale so it should be very easy to look at. I believe it's so easy to solve but I just couldn't nail it. Here's a brief description:
There's this main.swf that loads two external swfs in a UILoader upon click of the corresponding button. By the way, the code inside the external swfs listens for a stage resize... So, when user clicks on button 1 (named "LOAD 1"), it loads "content1.swf". User decides to resize the window, and layout resizes accordingly (in this case, they all center horizontally). User clicks on button 2 (named "LOAD 2"), it loads "content2.swf". Everything looks fine, apparently. But when user tries to resize the window again, an error pops up in the Output panel...
Honestly, I've built a new one here at my desktop using var loader:Loader = new Loader(); concept instead of the UILoader Flash component but still no luck. Please, hear me out. I don't think I want to give up.
Thanks!

Try this:
Rename setComp() and resizeComp() in content1 to setComp1() and resizeComp1()
Rename setComp() and resizeComp() in content2 to setComp2() and resizeComp2()
Now try resizing and you'll see the error being thrown with the new function names.
I think your problem deals with unloading your content. You should maybe try to properly unload content1 before loading content2 and vs. versa and see if that fixes your problem. I suspect that the resizeComp2 is still trying to resize an object that doesn't exist on the stage anymore, but the function is still loaded into memory and running. Unloading your swfs might clear this up.

• External swf madness

I am trying to load an external swf into a movie clip, but
when I test the file the movie is playing much larger than what I
made the movie clip loader. I add the following script to the swf
movie that I am trying to load, and it successfully keeps it from
scaling larger, but does not work on the swf I am trying to link it
to? I have also checked the settings on both .flas and as far as I
can tell I have them not to scale either? Any advice would be
greatly appreciated as always. Thanks...

Well, let me tell you want I did and hopefully that will
help. I created a movie clip holder that was the same exact size as
the swf I was hoping to externally load. But for some reason, it is
inflating the external swf to a size that runs off the screen even?
Thanks for your help...

• Component Loader resizing external swfs

Hi. Fairly new to Flash. I'm putting together my first full
Flash site. The tutorial I'm following along with for some
assistance is written for Flash8, but I'm using CS3. To try to
minimize differences, I'm doing my files in Actionscript 2.
I've used an instance of the component Loader to load
external swfs (my pages) into the content portion of my main swf.
The problem I've run into is the loaded swfs are showing up at
different sizes. For ease of layout, the document sizes of the
external swfs are exactly the same as the mx.controls.Loader
instance on my main swf. But when they load, one is coming in
slightly larger than the original size, one nearly a quarter of the
size it should be. Everything else works.
In playing around to try to troubleshoot, I made one change
to my home swf (the external that loads immediately with a
Loader.contentPath command. This one had been loading slightly
enlarged), I changed a guide layer so it was a regular layer, no
longer a guide, then it loaded at the right size. When I changed
the layer back to a guide, it loaded somewhat enlarged again. I
tried turning off the guide layer on the other swf that was loading
small, it didn't help. I'm going nuts trying to figure it out.
I thought maybe it might have to do with the fact that some
elements start outside the document frame of the external swfs and
slide in, so I masked all layers to the size of the document. That
didn't help. Is there some scale setting for the Loader component
that I'm not aware of? That would cause the external swf to scale
up or down to fit the size of the Loader instance?
Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Thanks. I tried a few more searches in Flash's Help for
Loader scaling and resize and found the scaleContent property, was
just coming back here to say nevermind and saw your response.
Sometimes it takes writing out the problem to spark more
troubleshooting inspiration.
BTW, changing Loader.scaleContent to false did solve my
problem. :)

• Layering external swf's by random request on the next level

I would greatly appreciate your help as I have been googling
an actionscript issue that seems quite simple. I want to layer
external swf's using loadMovieNum with a menu located in a main
swf. The current swf must remain as there are some transitions; the
new one should be placed on the top of the previous one. I cannot
use a scale of levels (products for level 1, support for level 2
and so on) as the clicking on the main menu is random.
Thanks in advance.

There is a menu which people click randomly, they can click
first on services and then profile, and so on... this menu is
allocated in a main swf that currently calls the requested swf into
a movieclip. My intention is to overlap the swf's called into the
movie clip. Now, the question... should I use levels for this
considering I cannot assign a specific number of level to a certain
swf as people will not click on the buttons subsequently. I hope I
could explain it better.
Thanks.

• Loading External SWF - Problem

Hi,
Using MovieClipLoader I want to load external SWFs - and it
is working fine
if external swf doesn't have anything outside it's stage,
otherwise it shows
everything - that's the problem.
For example, external swf's stage dimensions are 100x150, but
it has some
timeline animation (some objects scrolling through the stage,
some bouncing
text animation that sometimes goes off-stage, etc..).
So when I load this external movie (banner.swf), I can see
all these objects
that were bouncing outside this 100x150 area (the stage of
banner). Even
more - the size of loaded movie is larger than 100x150px
(because of these
off-stage objects that are now visible). This way I'm getting
positioning
problems, too.
var mcl:MovieClipLoader = new MovieClipLoader();
mcl.loadClip("banner.swf", holder);
mcl.addListener(listener);
holder._x = Stage.width/2 - holder._width/2;
holder._y = Stage.height/2 - holder._height/2;
Thanks in advance,
B.

Hi kglad,
Does doing that takes only into account width and height of the stage, or also considers off stage items (as in the initial question)?
I am also looking at this issue and we can't have all the content providers modify their pre-existing flash applications to be displayed in the appropiate scale. We are looking to any of the following:
find a way to get adobe air/flash to not consider the off stage elements on the width/height we set to the movie.
find a way to get the stage size from the external movie and use that to auto calculate the resize needed.
any other alternative that allows to have the same end result, which is loading up the external content at the size we specify and displaying well. We can actually hide content outside the stage, but we still need to know the appropiate scale / size to apply to the movie so what's visible matches the are where we want to show the content.
