Scale to Sequence?

Hi Everyone!
I apologize for the newb query, but Search yielded nothing. And until I deal with this problem, I'll never get to the interesting stuff!
I grabbed some anamorphic video from dvds of my stuff, 'cause I wanna make them available on the web. My Sequence settings are NTSC DV 3:2, (16:9 anamorphic box checked), and the window size looks just right. I then import my mov video, place it in the timeline, and it's pillarboxed in the centre. I select it, choose Scale to Sequence, and... nothing happens. The manual assures me it oughta just stretch right out, but nothing doing. Ditto Conform to Sequence.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it even a problem, or am I just missing something?
I would love any help you could offer!

I'm still working in fcp5.14 but this might still work. Select one of the clips in the browser, hit command-9 and make sure the anamorphic box is checked. Quicktime and/or fcp seems to have a problem saving and/or recognizing the anamorphic flag. Once you've done this reedit the clip into the timeline. Any better?
You, sir, are THE MAN!
Problem solved, many thanks to you.
Now I can get to work!

  • Still Images & Need to 'Scale to Sequence'-Vertical vs. Horizontal Picture

I make sequences from still images only. I need to start editing with all images at a Scale (in the Basic Motion section) of 100. When the original image is 720 width x 540 height (a picture taken horizontally), it appears in the timeline at a Basic Motion:Scale of 100 (this is what I want). However, when the original image is 405 width x 540 height (a picture taken vertically), it appears in the timeline at a Basic Motion:Scale of 112.5 and overflows the top and bottom of screen.
For these vertical images, I can then set the Scale manually, or use "Scale to Sequence" and get it to start at 100, but would like to avoid that extra step. Any ideas on how to have all imported images start at a Basic Motion:Scale of 100, whether taken vertically or horizontally?
Thanks, in advance, for giving this problem any thoughts.

I think that your best bet would be to
    1) make the images all the same size - adding black to the edges if necessary. You could add an alpha channel on the ones that you had to add black to the edges.
    or
    2) copy the motion settings from a still that is scaled correctly.
    or
    3) grin and bear it.
I created a file earlier this morning that FCP didn't scale, but now I can't duplicate it. All the files are getting scaled. According to the manual, FCP isn't supposed to scale past 100%, but they might have changed that with a revised version.
    Good luck!

  • "Scale to sequence" missing in Modify, yet users manual says it is there

I want to enlarge a photo imported into FCE from Iphoto and can't figure out how to do it. The Users Manual that comes with FCE on page 763 says to go to Modify then Scale to Sequence, but there is no such command in Modify.
I see that Tom Wolsky says there is no such command available in FCE, then why is it in the Manual?
    Very frustrating.
Anyway, is there a way to enlarge an imported photo either in Timeline, Viewer, or Browser?
    All help is appreciated.

When the images are in the sequence select them and use remove attributes Cmd-Opt-V. Check basic motion to reset the scale. You can also open individual items into the Viewer and reset he scale in the Motion tab.

  • FCE4 'Modify Scale to Sequence' - not here .. :(

pg 801 of the FCE handbook describes a method to scale stills (and videos) 'automatically' to Sequence properties.. it says:
.. To scale an image within a sequence to exactly fit the sequence dimensions:
1 Select one or more clips in the sequence. ∏ Tip: You can also place the playhead over a clip in the Timeline without selecting any clips.
2 Choose Modify > Scale to Sequence.
Each selected clip’s Scale parameter is set to the appropriate amount so that both horizontal and vertical image dimensions fit within the sequence dimensions. The images are not squeezed or stretched, but they may appear letterboxed or pillarboxed if the aspect ratios of the image and the sequence don’t match.
Note: The Scale to Sequence command works on video clips as well as still-image clips.
unfortunately, there's no 'Scale to Sequence'-command in that menu of FC/e 4.0.1 ..
    Uploaded with plasq's Skitch!
so.. ? wrong chapter in handbook, FC/p only? ..
    appreciate any insights ..

    thanks, Tom, mystery solved!
they translated this error into the German manual too

  • Support for RAW Video and Image Sequences

Being a stills photographer who moved into video some years back, I'm very interested in the direction Lightroom is going with regards to video support. I haven't tried it yet but I wondered if LR4 supports Red R3D files? And would it perhaps support other future RAW video formats from the likes of Canon and Sony? It would seem like the perfect application, perhaps intergrating with Premiere in a similar way to RedCine with FCP. Be great to be able to log footage, orginize it into bins and do basic colour correction in LR, edit the project in Premiere and re-touch in After Effects.
Another task LR would seem ideally suited to is combining image sequences into timelapse video. Shooting timelapse as an image sequence on a DSLR is pretty much standard practice these days; and I've used LR to colour correct, crop and scale my sequences (before fitting them together in Quicktime) for years now. It would be fantastic to be able to preview the clip and export the video (as DPX, ProRes or DNxHD) from within Lightroom.
These are obviously fairly long term wishes. In the short term though, the video features are pretty much useless to me without support for exporting ProRes and DNxHD files. With this LR becomes a powerful asset manager that could be used to collect together footage from multiple sources/codecs and transcode it all for editing. As mentioned in a previous thred, XML support would make it even more useful in this context. There is definitly a gap in the market for an application than can handle this kind of task well.
With other manufactures floundering or neglecting their professional user base, Adobe would seem poised to take the video post crown. I wonder if Lightroom could be part of the takeover?

As I understand it Andy, its intention is to remain a photographers program, not a videographers program.  The basic video features are available for lightweight management of videos coming from digital cameras, but it's not going too much further than that at this point in time.  Of course that may change in the future, but we'll all have to wait and see on that one.

  • How do I re-scale cropped images in Fianal Cut Express 4?

How do I re-scale cropped images to the correct aspect ratio in the sequence? I am in Final Cut Express 4. The manual says: 'Modify>Scale to sequence' but I do not see this command in the Modify drop-down menu. Does anyone know where this is located or how to to re-scale? Many thanks for any help.

I'm not quite sure exactly what the problem is and I am no expert.
However, if the photos are too small you can simply enlarge them to fit  the frame.
To do this, select the clip in the timeline and open the Motion tab in the Viewer.
Drag the Scale slider along until the photo enlarges the correct amount. (If the picture does not enlarge, double click the clip)
If you have lots of photos which need exactly the same enlargement you can copy (Cmd C) the treated picture and then select all the others.
Go up to the Edit menu and select "Paste Attributes".
A window will open. Tick the "Basic Motion" box and all the selected pictures will be enlarged.
    They will then need rendering.

  • Pixel iteration when footage smaller than sequence size?

    Hi everyone,
I am having a problem with my plugins when the footage is smaller than the sequence.
For some reason Premiere (and only Premiere, AE is fine in this regard) iterates pixels not from the clip origin (let's say 200,100), but from sequence origin (0,0). Since it only iterates the amount of pixels that is proper clip size (correct), it results in part of the layer being totally cut off (in this example 200 pixels from the right, and 100 pixels from below).
For what it's worth, if the clip has proper aspect ratio, and scale to sequence size is clicked, or if the bigger clip is scaled down, the effect is applied properly.
I have tried using various offsets, but I could not get it to work. Obviously I'm missing something. I am using AE SDK.
    Thanks for any help.
    Bart

OK, I got this mostly figured out with one exception. The following code:
    ciP.crop_topF  = params[CROP_TOP]->u.fs_d.value * in_data->height / 100 + in_data->pre_effect_source_origin_y  * ciP.downsample_y.den / ciP.downsample_y.num
works fine for every downsampling ratio except for the full resolution, when the value is moved by fixed amount, independent of source origin, crop position, etc. Curiously, similar formula for x works fine, although it is later scaled by pixel ratio.
What values of are used for full resolution? What might be the reason for such behavior?

  • Pr CS7 Feature Requests

I am excited about getting my hands on CS6, and congratulate the Adobe team for their hard work.
    However...
I haven't seen anything in the web pages or videos about these features that are vital to working editors, already requested by me and many others, but still not implemented or announced here:
    http://blogs.adobe.com/premiereprotraining/2012/04/premiere-pro-cs6-whats-new-and-changed. html
Please join me in requesting these features be implemented ASAP:
Ability to save track or clip based audio effect user presets.
A Scrub Audio shortcut toggle - NOT a user pref.
Ability to map multiple Keyboard Shortcuts to the same function (a la Avid: E & R keys, same as I and O).  Very convenient for two-handed editors.
Show Match Frame (Add Edit) function.
Heal Match Frame (Add Edit) command.
    Dupe Detection indications in Timeline.
Shortcuts to Scale image zoom in Source and Program tabs.
Temporary Snap on or off (AKA Reverse Snap Behavior) keyboard modifier.
More obvious indicator that Timeline Snap is on.
Indicator on Clips in the Timeline that indicate Frame Blend is enabled.
    Ripple Sequence and Chapter Markers.
    Ripple Audio Track Keyframes.
Ability to save user/custom transition presets.
Constrain clip time movement between tracks by holding shift key, just like all other applications.
    Lasso multiple keyframes.
Constrain keyframe values while holding shift key and moving them in time.
Clip Label only works on AV clips.  Not V-only.  Please make it work on V-only clips as well as AV clips.
A Track Matte function that allows us to pan and scale the clip being matted without affecting the matte size or position.  CRITICAL!
Ability to change the dimensions of a Sequence after it's been created.  (Actually, this may be in CS6; I'm not clear.)
Make it possible to solo and mute audio in the Timeline panel; not just the Audio Mixer.
Make it brilliantly obvious when audio tracks are being soloed (or muted); not some tiny little icon that's 1/100 the size of the interface. When you mute or solo a track in the Audio Mixer, that should be indicated in the Timeline icons and tracks as well, perhaps by shading or color, stripes, etc.
Please give us the ability to copy between in/out in a Sequence and paste elsewhere.  Workaround is to add edits (razor) where you want the in and outs before you can copy that region.  Or, you can set in/outs and lift or extract, then immediately undo.  This is a time waster; counterproductive.
No Auto-Saving right in the middle of an operation or playback, please.  Make it wait for a few seconds of inactivity before it kicks in.  No auto-saves when no changes have been made; long periods of inactivity.
Please make all Adobe apps NOT force the computer system to switch to the app that's launching or saving after that operation is compete.  It's VERY ANNOYING to be typing an email and have Adobe switch apps for me when it decides it's ready.  VERY ANNOYING.
Please after using Clip > Scale to Sequence, DO NOT have the new Scale factor in the Motion tab change the clip's scale to 100%.  That's misleading, confusing and I see no good reason for that number to change.  If I'm using a HD clip in an SD Sequence, I want to know exactly how much more I can scale it up before it exceeds the actual scale of 100%.  So, rather than it showing me 100%, it should show 40%, or whatever the real scale factor is.
Provide a way to save TRACK AUDIO FX settings.  I work in a native Sequence to edit, and copy and paste it into an AJA sequence for color correction.  ALL my TRACK BASED AUDIO needs to carry over into the new sequence.  Without a way to save my settings, I have to manually recreate them by jumping back and forth between the old and new sequence.  Time-killer.
Change the paste behavior into a new Sequence to exactly match the track configuration from the "parent" (copy from) sequence.
Have the Program monitor remember the Zoom level for each Sequence; don't have Zoom scale set universally by the project.  When switching between Sequences of different size, we have to reset the Zoom level each time (and with the mouse, too; not a keyboard shortcut).  Time waster.
Consistent Mouse Wheel behavior across all apps in CS, please.  Ae, Au, and Pr have different scroll wheel behaviors.
    =====
I intend to submit these to Adobe AGAIN a nanosecond after I discover they're not in Pr CS6.  I hope you will all do the same.  And share your suggestions with us.  Strength in numbers.
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

    All good points.
Temporary Snap on or off (AKA Reverse Snap Behavior) keyboard modifier.
Can't say how many times I've wished for that.
Constrain clip time movement between tracks by holding shift key, just like all other applications.
    That would be handy.
Make it possible to solo and mute audio in the Timeline panel; not just the Audio Mixer.
No idea why it is not there, this seems like a no brainer. At the very least a context menu to achieve that quickly a la PS' Show/Hide Layers would be nice. This also goes for expand/collapse tracks and so on.
No Auto-Saving right in the middle of an operation or playback, please.  Make it wait for a few seconds of inactivity before it kicks in.  No auto-saves when no changes have been made; long periods of inactivity.
Indeed. The Auto-Save function is very much useless as means of backwards recovery. Often all you get is 5 projects which are just like your current project so if something goes wrong (as it often does with this crash magnet of a  software) - good luck. Retarded and yes, very annoying when it kicks in.
Consistent Mouse Wheel behavior across all apps in CS, please.  Ae, Au, and Pr have different scroll wheel behaviors.
Adobe seems infatuated with tiny controls and off the cuff UI behavior. This has been going on for ages and I want to strangle the person(s) who are responsible for that. One needs to fevereshly hunt for the right pixel to click on to get the context menu or action desired; Mouse clicks or wheel works in some windows w/o focus and doesn't in others; They seem to have missed the obvious that when you press ALT in Windows it switches over to the app menu (nothing new either, been like that forever) so expanding/contracting the timeline with Alt+Wheel always results in lost focus and required extra clicks/operations at best, doing something undesireable at worst; Dragging effect into timeline clip leaves focus in Effects panel. WTF!?; Can't begin to count how many times I've mangled my project because when selecting items the UI for some reason goes into renaming mode for example.
In PS I can focus into a value and adjust it with the mouse wheel: good. In Premiere you need to drag an imaginary slider or just outright type the value in. Good luck adjusting effect or any other values by a tick (or two even) with the mouse.
I would also welcome ability to re-shuffle audio tracks on timeline either with drag or move up/down
Another thing is (Context) Menu management. Why can we do it in PS but not Premiere, mind boggling. Why do I always have to see 20 million items many of which I have no need for. All that is good for is constantly searching for the right item on the menu. Although I use PS CS4 so that may have changed there too now.
Is it really so hard to provide content based custom actions? I don't have Audition, how about being able to create a custom menu item whereby I can edit my asset item using MY program?
Why is the option to for example Edit in Photoshop, displayed (albeit grayed out) when that item cannot possibly be edited in PS and Premiere knows it? And that goes for other items as well. I'd love to see things and only things relevant to my work environment and its state. I don't need to see full lists of everything every time. I don't care for exporting to Apple formats, why can't I hide those presets so my drop-down menu is manageable? I don't care if it takes me 2 weeks to set the UI up according to my needs, but it should be possible.
And one more. "Clear" means just empty everything in a container. It is highly unintuitive to call action "Clear" when in effect it removes selected item(s). Here's a tip: "Remove" has been used for that by everyone else and for good reason, too.

    File requests here:
    https://www.adobe.com/cfusion/mmform/index.cfm?name=wishform

If you want to do this correctly you need to file a request for each feature.
Ripple Sequence and Chapter Markers is already implemented. Sequence markers are the same as chapter markers, yes? (Ripple Sequence Markers, select Marker > Ripple Sequence Markers.)
Ability to print the Keyboard Shortcuts, or save all of them as a text file. also available. (hold ctrl+shift while opening. A button with clipboard appears)

Make Export and Title windows return to the previously adjusted size and placement. They do.
Some feature you posted are great. How about a eyedropper tool for the Color Matte?
I find the Magnet for Snap quite visible. There is also this feature in the Pref to make the playhead snap.

  • How to change output video resolution.  I have 1920x1080 video but sharing from FCPX only allows 640x480.  I want 1920 output.  How can I resolve this?

I have 1920x1080 video file that I edited.  When I attempt to share the edited file from FCPX, it only allows 640x480 output resolution.  I want 1920 output.  How can I resolve this?

    Hi,
Final Cut will output the video at the resolution of your project's timeline.
You can change the settings and scale your project up though by adjusting the sequence settings and then, if necessary, copying and pasting attributes to scale up the sequence.
I had this question before and made a video explanation of how to re-scale a sequence here - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=***9d-rHsKo&feature=youtu.be .
If you have any more questions about this then just drop me a message here.

  • Can i resize my project in fcpe?

it seems my sequence settings didn't match my source footage. i have a squeezed picture with black on each side. shouldn't i be able to click on the clip in the sequence and go to modify>scale to sequence? i don't have that command though. is it cause i have final cut express? any other ways i can rescale my already edited sequence? thanks a bunch

You may not have to recapture. Check the item properties for the media in the browser. Is it correct? If it isn't you have to recapture. Copy your edited program into a correct sequence. Check in the motion tab all the properties and see what has been applied to the clips to change it, probably a distort function. If so, use remove attributes to remove the distortion. It depends on the original material and the settings you used whether this will work.

  • Screen Captures Used in FCP

I am capturing some streaming movies from the internet, legally, with full knowledge of the copyright owners, and saving them as .mov files, at their original size.
I have been able to import them to the FCE Timeline, render, and they play just fine.
The only problem is that FCE automatically scales up their size, according to which side is the longest length, to fit the 720x480 size of my DV movie.
What I want is to import them and have them remain in their original size, so I can float them over another video background. The whole idea is that the audience will know they are screen captures from the internet.
Can anybody tell me how to do this? Please and thanks.

Thank you both, but especially Meg.
I kept looking and looking for that check box and couldn't find it, until you pasted in your screen grab. That was very helpful, because the box says something different from what Tom indicated: "Scale to Sequence Size" vs. "Scale to Fit Window". I'm a little iffy on the whole idea of sequences yet, or maybe I'm just too literal. Or stoopid.
    Anyway, very good, and thanks!
Hey, what kind of dog are you, anyway?

  • Can't get video to correct size in viewer

Here's an interesting situation. I've used FCP for 3 years on an old G4. Upon using my new G5 with Final Cut Studio for the 1st time I must have mistakenly put my regular DV clips on an HD Sequence timeline and rendered it. Now when I try to put the project on a regular DV sequence and re-render it becomes a stretched image. The item properties show the original clips as 720 x 480, 29.97 fps, DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. The clips on the HD timeline are showing as 1440 x 1080. The project is finished & about 35 minutes in length so I don't want to re-edit the entire thing. How can I get the HD sequence to go back to the original size DV that it was supposed to be. Highlighting and Modify > scale to sequence on the new sequence timeline still leaves me with a stretched (non-full) screen.

    No--
In the Motion tab... right click the video in the sequence and send to viewer...
Then under the MOTION tab... twirl down the DISTORT triangle and then check the aspect ratio there... set either to 0, 33 or -33.
    Good luck,
    CaptM

  • Trouble with SD footage in HD timeline

I am working with a blend of media and would like to be able to place some SD (4:3) footage into my project with that section pillar-boxed. I have read other posts on the subject and do not want to upconvert the footage to a widescreen look as it contains a lower-third template that would get cut off. I've tried both the "scale to sequence" and "conform to sequence" commands and both had zero effect. What I do get is what appears to be a zoomed image focusing upon the upper left region of my 4:3 image. If I attempt a resize or rescale, all that results is a larger or smaller version of the same thing. How then do I get the full view of a 4:3 image pillar-boxed into a 16:9 project?

    You up-rezzed a 720x480 @29.97 frames image to 1280x720 @59.97 frames for use in a 1920x1080 @29.97 frame sequence?
First you'll have to accept the SD will look terrible when viewed along side HD footage.
You could up-rez using Compressor, turn Frame Controls On and change Resize to Best. Stick with a 4:3 image size, for a 1920x1080 sequence, resize to 1440x1080. Keep the frame rate the same as your Sequence settings. Use the same codec as your sequence.
