Scam attempt

I've read over a few similar scam posts so I am just looking for a quick bit of advice from anyone who knows how these scams work.
Was talking to a girl in an online dating site, she asked for my skype so we could chat. Started skyping and things heated up. As the story seems to go the next thing I know she is threatening to send the video to all my friends and family.
The thing is, I refused to give her my facebook name, and only go by my web handle on the skype account which has my email address hidden as well. After the initial threat, she started asking if i Knew a few names, none of which i recognized, then she said she would post video.
I've blocked/reported and removed her from my contacts, unless someone i know stumbles across this video on the interenet if it was posted, do i have much to worry about?
Thanks,
Badger

  • Reporting "Skype Office" scam attempt

I failed to find any way of contacting customer support and decided to report this here rather than on facebook. By the way you should really fix your support page, it sent me to microsoft and microsoft sent me back to the skype support page and I found no email adresses or in browser forms anywhere. Now anyways, I have no idea where I was supposed to post this, but I just got a message from an account I don't know, which is an OBVIOUS SCAM. I'm reporting it so you can deal with it so nobody actually get's scammed by this, or at least so others can get the warning.Their display name is/was "Skype Office", the account I believe is "silentosnk", at least it says that in parantheses after the display name in my blocked contacts, they requested to add me to their contacts. • Scams a Skype inside job?

I subscribe to several Skype services (that I pay for), and the most annoying thing about Skype is the number of scam attempts that happen daily, and have for years (calls from "system notice", "online help", "instructions", "system - urgent...", "comp 002 - help", "online notice", and many others). Now you know, and I know, and you know that I know that you know that these come from the same source. Your "solutions" that direct me to only allow calls from those on my contact list are not acceptable, as that will not allow calls from other legitimate callers that aren't on my list.
The true solution is for Skype to identify and block these calls at the source. If that is not possible, then Skype needs to spend some money and hire security people who can do the job. I suspect that, because the huge majority of these calls come when I am online and signed in, perhaps the intruder actually works for Skype, with access to those who are online at any given time. I have blocked (and reported abuse from each of these calls) several times a day for years. Obviously, that is not a solution either.
Perhaps the economical nature of Skype subscriptions comes with a higher cost? These abusive calls have interrupted other important calls I was engaged in, awakened me from a sound sleep, caused me to waste untold amounts of time blocking and reporting, and generally been a nuisance. I am considering going back to a more expensive, yet secure, way of using the phone. Give me a good reason to stay with Skype.
    Sincerely,
    Bill

    Hi, Bill,
Please allow me to put to rest your assertion that these scam and phishing attempts are a Skype "inside job."  They are not.
Skype is keenly aware of these issues; as is the nature of those who commit fraud and who circulate scams, spam, and phishing pleas, as soon as one is discovered and disabled, another is instituted.
I will bring your letter to the attention of the Skype Support Network Moderation Team management.
    Best regards,

Phishing and scam attempts against Skype users seems to be pretty common, and I get a fair share myself.
The good news is that it's actually possible to do something to reduce the amount of Phishing and scams dramatically.
There is a new email authentication standard called DMARC, DMARC is supported by Microsoft, Google, Yahoo, AOL and others.
DMARC is pretty easy to implement, since it's based on existing technology: SPF & DKIM signing
Well-known senders protecting their users using DMARC include: Paypal, Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Netflix and others.
How about if Skype started protecting it's users using DMARC ?

    Never ever going to happen.
    Bad idea.

  • Silent Sales calls and International scam calls

I am registered with TPS. I still get calls from call centres and numerous international calls from "microsoft" etc. The call centre calls seem to be almost all from PPI Claims Companys but most wont respond when asked for details. International calls are almost all scams attempting to obtain bank details and money from unsuspecting persons. I can handle all of these calls but it is the nuisance of receiving these calls almost daily. If I complain to TPS my full name, address and telephone number are supplied to whoever I am complaining about. This is the last thing I want these people to know.
How can I stop these calls ?. BT want a monthly subscription and state that International calls cannot be blocked. Can anyone advise on how to stop all these unwanted calls ?. I feel like disposing of my landline phone and going all mobile.

Firstly, you are not alone. Many of us have these problems.
If you subscribe to BT caller display, then " international" calls and "number unavailable" calls are displayed on the screen, (if you are quick enough to read it).
I have my cordless phone set so that it does not  connect on picking the phone up from it's base.
You can then decide whether to answer. They can leave a message if it's important. They soon decide that it's not worth the effort ringing your number, and the frequency of calls reduces.
(If you do answer the calls they know that you are there and will continue to call.)
Perhaps it's more to add to your phone bill, but it's worth it to reduce the aggravation.

  • Possible General Philip Breedlove Scam

My boss got a friend invite from someone claiming to be General Philip Breedlove.  I told him to ignore the request, that this is probably a scam artist. I asked him why would the General contact him?  This person has made no requests yet, but my boss has told him that he is a business owner and told him a little about what we do.  My bosses English is not that good and he has asked me to talk to the General that the General has asked him how he could be of help to us in our business.  I still do not trust this request and believe it is a fraud attempt.  I have not seen any fraud reports for General Philip Breedlove yet, but when we attempted to call him rather than reply via text he refused to answer and said that he could not answer due to security issues.  I wanted my boss to reply to him asking him if he can't talk via skype due to security, why then can he send text messages via skype.  I would think this would be a breech of security as well.  My Boss did not feel that he should ask such question.  Please advise if this is another scam attempt using a new name for a US General?  I am almost 100% sure that it is.

ignore, delete them from your contact list and block them.  Also if you think applicable in your case, you can also change your privacy settings to allow calls and messages from people in your contact list only.

  • Spoof e-mail

I have been trying to confirm my bank account for a while. I tried again yesterday to get some help. Last night I got an e-mail from paypal saying that she was doing something to confirm my bank account and I would be notified within 72 hours. So, I was like .. great. Finally someone is helping me.      Then this morning, I got an e-mail from a bank claiming to associated with paypal. The link  in the e-mail redirected to a website that asks for very personal information. So, I closed it. Then I forwarded the e-mail to spoof @ paypal.com - they responded saying with the 'You're right!  This was a phishing attempt'' or whatever the exact words are.. So, I was nervous about that, and I was thinking.. How does the person who sent this phishing e-mail know that I'm trying to confirm my bank account with paypal? Or was it a coincidence? Then I let it go and forgot about it. Then I had a phone call, no voicemail was left and I had missed it. I googled the number and it was associated with paypal according to a bunch of people who aren't really reliable sources.  Then not long after the phone call, I got another e-mail from paypal (webform @ paypal.com)  saying that he had tried to call me to help me confirm my bank account, and I should call him back to set it up. I called, but in the meantime, I got suspicious because of the first e-mail/phishing attempt from that mornign - so while on hold on the phone, I forwarded that e-mail to [email protected] to see if it checked out as legit. Seeing how I was calling these people to confirm my bank and I would probably have to give sensitive information. I got the e-mail back from spoof, and it said AGAIN that the new e-mail was a phishing attempt - the e-mail that told me to call the people I was on hold with right then. I replied to that e-mail from spoof @ paypal.com and I said: Are you sure? I'm on the phone waiting on hold for someone now. I really
need to get my bank account verified.. If this is a legit call then I
really need to do it. And I already gave the last 4 digits of my social
security number. This is the second e-mail that I've gotten saying it's
a phishing attempt. How did they get my number if it's a scam? They
called me first [later on, paypal replied to ^my reply and identified my reply as a phishing attempt, too... yeah.. seriously...] So, a customer service guy picked up the line, and I didn't know what to do at that point. I didn't know what to say to him, so I just tried to explain what had kind of happen and asked him to somehow verify that he is really from PayPal. It was going around in circles and I was trying to explain it to him.. like.. ''Yeah, the e-mail does look legit, but PayPal just told me that the e-mail that told me to call YOU is a scam attempt.. meaning you're the scammer.. Because the scam e-mail told me to call you.. and here we are.'' Basically..  he needed to confirm who I was before he could tell me anything and I needed to confirm who he was before I would tell him anything. He offered to forward me to the fraud department and I was like .. wait, but if you're a scammer then what good is the ''fraud department'' going to do for me? and he was like, if I'm a scammer then why would I connect you  to the fraud department.. and I was like anyone could claim to be the fraud department.. ya know?  Anyway..  I confirmed the piece of information that he wanted because that was going nowhere. and because the info wasn't something majorly sensitive.. so that he could then confirm to me who he was.. I guess.. So, after that, I asked him to confirm something from my paypal and he did. and he told me all the information on my PayPal account, and he knew everything. So I said okay, I believe you that you're PayPal. We went through the bank confirmation stuff - allthewhile I still feel weird about the whole thing, plus I feel like he thinks I'm a lunatic. But I still have this little voice going, ''But why did spoof @ paypal.com say that he's phishing..?'' and ''How could they possibly identify their own e-mail as a scam...?'' Then he said my bank account was confirmed, so I was like.. Ok, let me just look while you're on the phone with me and check to see that my bank account is confirmed on my PayPal account. Because if it wasn't, there would be a big problem. My bank account WAS confirmed - something I've been trying to do for like 6 months, so I was really happy. And that was that. But here I am.... still wondering.... what just happened...?????

Along with some good advice Leonn1990 wrote:
...You can forward the email to BT, the email address to forward it too is [email protected]..
Reporting spam to [email protected] ought to be a good idea, but I doubt it because that address responds with a long email that starts by saying BT will do nothing unless the spam comes from one of its customers - and that's unusual. Very entertaining, though, because that email is itself trapped by the Yahoo spam filter. It looks as though that address is for reporting fellow customers who misuse the BT email system, not for spammers.
This BT help page (currently linked from the Forums home page) tells us to use address [email protected] That at least returns a very encouraging response, though this whole thing makes me wonder whether BT really does anything about these reports.
The odd thing is that when you follow the advice to forward the spam email you are stripping off the information that is not displayed that BT technicians could use to track down the source. Sending it as an attachment preserves that information but I've no idea whether either of these reporting addresses is set up to do anything with email attachments. Greg

  • Skype ATM Compenation

I feel ridiculous even inquiring about this, but I was contacted via Skype yesterday about ATM Compensation for being an alleged "Scam victim" and that I am to receive $150,000 USD.
Here is the message they sent via email, as well:
"Congratulations on joining Skype! Now you are being compensated by Microsoft who is to pay 419 scam victims of $ 150,000.00 USD each, which you are listed and approved for this payment as one of the scammed victims. In regards to this, we wish to inform you that your ATM compensation funds valued at One hundred and fifty thousand United States dollars ($ 150.000.00 USD) has been authorized to be released to you through our corresponding financial institution here in the United States.."
Obviously, I don't think this is real, but please advise. And everyone be aware of the scam attack potential.

  • Why did the Virus known as Bing infect my computer and refuse to leave?

A few days ago the Virus known as BING infected my computer and refuses to leave.  It has usurped my homepage and my browser and will not permit me to reset my defaults to Google.  It has stolen my computer.
BING is haunting me.  It appears that the common lingo is to describe BING as a semi-benign virus.  I find nothing benign about it. I called the MS Customer Service number and they refused to help.  The MAC folks were helpful, but they didn't create this problem, Microsoft did.
Of course, I would like to know how MS can get away with this, but I would be satisfied just getting rid of the Evil BING.  I am NOT computer savvy, but I know when someone is using me surreptitious with malicious software.
If I am overlooking something simple, please forgive.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

One very common cause of having Bing take over as your search engine is that you have installed the InstallMac adware. The most common way to become "infected" with this adware is to download something from Softonic. See:
    Continue to boycott Softonic
Because InstallMac is powered by the Genieo adware, you can follow the removal instructions in the link dominic23 gave you. Be aware that InstallMac does not include some of the components mentioned in that removal guide, including the Genieo application. If a particular component is missing, skip it and move on to the next one.
Finally, note that this is in no way the fault of Bing, which is a legitimate search engine powered by Microsfot. This is probably some kind of click fraud scam, attempting to generate advertising revenue for the creators of InstallMac by sending visitors to Bing.

  • My iPad won't let me open Safari...

They won't let me open Safari on my iPad because it says the username and password are corrupted.  How can I use Safari?

This sounds like a scam attempt.  I don't know of any such dialog in Safari (about the username and password being corrupt).
Can you post a screenshot?  Launch Safari, then press Home+Power buttons at the same time, then press the Home button, then launch Photos, then mail yourself the screenshot so it can be posted here.

  • Metadata from scammer

A relative has been receiving continued scam attempts including photoshop mock-ups of fake ids. Can I find the origin of these and whether they are all from one source from the metadata (they have been flattened to jpeg) and which bit should I be looking at? Urgent, thanks.

This is not a Photoshop or Adobe question at all, of course.  You can start by viewing the internet headers of the emails containing the scam offer.
I don't see how expert Adobe users can be of assistance to you.  Not even Adobe itself can, and you are not addressing Adobe here in the user forums.

I have a suspicion that this is because a few months ago I was being spammed to death  by delivery failure messages so I guess some spammers had put my e mail address on a list somewhere. That has stopped now but I cannot send e mails from a client other than web mail.
Yahoo haven't aknowledged even receipt of my query, let alone do anything about it.... does anyone have any ideas?
    Hi.
This is generally not the IP address, since residential IP addresses are all dynamic and in fact the whole pool is on various blocklists.
It should also not be the email address. Many people have at one time or other suffered with a lot of undeliverable messages where spammers have put the "from" address in their spam run - that is in addition to being on spammers' lists. Usually, as you've noted, this can be a bow wave of non delivery responses, which trickles to a stop.
When did you fill in the form as mentioned on that link ?
Yahoo! can be a little weird with regard this, and frankly I can't see why they even do this (since your webmail works as you've said). It does imply that they believe your email address was used in a phishing/scam attempt.
I assume that you've made sure that the settings are correct (e.g. smtp authentication turned on).
You could try altering the port to 587 (probably set at 25) to see if that helps.
Is there more of the error message, or is that it in full ?

Try this to see if it the case?

Basicaly it says too many recipients or content deemded inappropriate.
Looks like 554 is a generic error code that providers can use for anything

Yesterday I received a call from xxx xxx xxxx This was in response to a Craigslist ad.. I have received so MANY scam attempts i think that this is some sort of scam or the number is displayed wrong.  I tried to call this number 5 times. Once on the Land Line and many times using skype.  All I get is "this call could not be completed because you're trying to reach a skpye user".. My skype works fine.

    Hi, Jbb522 and other readers,
Please contact Skype Customer Service directly when you encounter these types of call issues.  We here in the Community do not have the tools to diagnose or resolve most of these problems.  Here is a link to the instruction on how to contact Skype Customer Service via their secure portal: Contact Customer Service
Look to approve a pop-up dialogue box which would connect you to start an instant message chat with a customer service agent.  If you have pop-ups blocked in your browser settings, this will also impede reaching an agent.
    Regards,
    Elaine
