SCEP ADR also pushing full engine update

Like most people, I have an ADR in place in our SCCM 2012 R2 environment that pushes daily updates to all SCEP-enabled clients. One of the settings in the ADR is for 'product classification = definition updates'. However, i noticed over the last few days
that it is also pushing a full engine update. This update was around 100Mb. I noticed it because it swamped the network at one of our sites and i got lots of irate phone calls...
Is there any way to limit the ADR to only the def updates? - as i thought that's what i had done...

Hi,
There is no way as far as I know to filter out that definition update, the main problem is that you need it for newly installed clients and for clients not updated for a month.
The way that updates work is described here:

  • SCEP ADR

I need someone to (hopefully) clarify how SCEP updates function.  I have a SCEP ADR configured to run immediately after a successful wsync, with a wsync that is configured to run every 6 hours beginning at 12 PM.  The SCEP ADR sets a deadline of
'As soon as possible'.  We have a single server OU-based collection with an antimalware policy deployed that checks for definition updates every 8 hours.  In our client policy, we have the Software Update Scan scheduled for every 3 hours.
The problem i'm running into is that all of our virtual machines are being hammered at the same time thus causing latency on storage.  How does the deadline set via the ADR relate to the definition update interval checking on the malware policy and
the software update scan schedule in the client policy?  How do most people spread out when clients are updating?

That's irrelevant. Newly deployed updates always kick of a software update scan cycle to determine compliance thus they don't wait for the next scheduled scan cycle and the statement still stands -- the software update scan cycle do *not* kick off
    updates. Only deadline deployments do.

The question still remains, if a deadline of immediately is configured on a SCEP update, is it going to install after an update scan cycle, or based on the malware policy schedule for installing definition updates.
I found this on a blog, however I wish there was some official documentation from Microsoft.
The key difference that I can see is that the SCEP definition update initiates from the AntiMalware Policy configuration, not from the EndPoint client settings where I expected
to see it, or the from Software Updates Schedule client setting.  As opposed of course to Software Update scanning and installation as per your post.  Also triggering a manual SCEP definition update is only done from the SCEP client and not the SCCM
client actions from what I've seen so far.

  • Root partition suddenly full while updating packages with Pacman

    Hello
I'm not sure if this is a problem with Pacman, but my root partition seems to have become completely full while updating my system using pacman -Syu. Before updating anything, there seems to have been an update to a new version of Pacman (3.3.1-1) that needed to be installed before updating packages.
In the middle of the updates, I got this error:
error: error writing to file '/var/cache/pacman/pkg/openoffice-base-3.1.1-2-x86_64.pkg.tar.gz': No space left on device
Also, I don't know if this is related, but I got a lot of 'not found' errors after that.
    The entire output from everything:

Also, I haven't restarted my system yet. Should I try and see what happens?
    Thanks!

This happened to me recently. I could not restart my laptop properly due to lack of space on my root partition.
The error during boot was along the lines of:-
Starting D-BUS system messagebus   - Failed
Failed to start message bus: Failed to close "var/run/dbus.pid": No space left on drive
    Hardware Abstraction Layer - Failed
everything else during the boot was as normal till I started to type in my username - but couldn't because the keyboard was inactive.
I used a Wolvix live CD to investigate and found a QT4 file in the packman cache which was 6.9GB in size (compared to the normal 27mb size). Once that was deleted and the drive/partition error checked everything was back to normal. So before you reboot I would definitely recommend clearing any oversize file out of your packman cache, or just clearing the whole cache.

  • KB2889923 appears in my ADR SUG when no other 'Updates' classifications do

    All,
CM2012 R2 CU4. Two monthly ADRs for Office 201x x86 and x64 targeting my 'immediate testers' group. (Double/Triple-checked this) Criteria for each is:
Date Released or Revised: Last Month
Product: "Microsoft Lync 2010" OR "Office 2010" OR Office 2013"
Title: -sharepoint OR -32-bit OR -servers
Update Classification: "Critical Updates" OR "Definition Updates" OR "Security Updates"
Checking the two ADR SUGs I see my expected April 2015 CritSecs and Definition updates but also 2889923. The Update Classification for that is 'Updates', and NO other updates are showing for that Classification. I also see 2889953, which *is* a Critical
Update (I will be removing this one for now). No other monthly ADRs have 'Updates'...
Why would just this one Update be included when no others are. Is there some dark magic at hand? Should I direct this to WSUS.
    Thanks
    Niick

    Hi,
I just tried the criterias you posted above. The KB2889923 didn't show up as long as there is a classification criteria as yours.

  • E2 Engine Update released alongwith new signature engine(s)

    Dear All
For those interested, the E2 Engine Update has finally been released a couple of days ago. Signature 339 is bundled with it. It also contains new and improved signature engines like P2P engine, FIXED engine etc. Also some very promising P2P detection signatures are included in the SIG # 339 release. Have a look at:
    http://tools.cisco.com/MySDN/Intelligence/viewBulletin.x?bi=157

    Regards
    Farrukh

Not sure why you rated my post so low.
It was not meant to be a final answer, but rather a list of questions for you to answer in order for me to provide you a detailed answer.
I need to know your sensor models and versions in order to let you know specifically what packages you need to download and install.
If you are using an IPS-4260 it is a different set of packages than if using other sensor models, but only if staying at version 5.1. If going to 6.0 or 6.1 it uses the standard packages instead of special ones.
If you were running 5.1(6)E2 versus 5.1(7) then it is a different set of files as well.
From 5.1(6) you had to upgrade all the way to 5.1(8)E2. If running 5.1(7)E1 then you could just upgrade to 5.1(7)E2 OR to 5.1(8)E2.
If you try going to 6.0 or 6.1 it is again a different set of packages.
Based on your latest response I assume you were able to figure it out.
As for upgrading to 6.0(5)E2 and/or 6.1(1)E2 it once again depends on your specific sensor models.
If using IPS-4210, then NO you have to stay at version 5.1(8)E2. The IDS-4210 is not supported in 6.0.
If using IPS-4215, IDS-4235, IPS-4240, IDS-4250, IPS-4255, IPS-4260, IDSM-2, NM-CIDS, SSM-10, or SSM-20; then yes you can upgrade to 6.0(5)E2 (assuming you have an up to date contract).
If using IPS-4240, IPS-4255, IPS-4260, IDSM-2, SSM-10, or SSM-20; then yes you can upgrade to 6.1(1)E2 (assuming you have an up to date contract). The IDS-4215, IDS-4235, IDS-4250, and NM-CIDS are not supported in 6.1.

  • Full system update lead to unresponsive terminal

    Hi, all.
I performed a full system update with pacman -Syyu on my machine. This machine has not been fully updated for some time, though I updated some packages occasionally. The only warning message I noticed is that "/bin/mountpoint" existed already, and the system didn't allow the update. I remembered I also ran into similar issues before (https://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=132225), so I adopted the same approach and added  the --force option.  The updating process was quite smooth.
However, after reboot, the system is unresponsive. I could see the login prompt, but the system didn't accept any input from the keyboard, and I could do nothing. The booting message showed the filesystem (RAID1 with LVM) were mounted, but /dev/pts and /dev/shm couldn't be mounted. And it seemed that many binaries in /sbin and /bin couldn't be found. (I think it is due to the merge of /sbin and /bin to /usr/bin.)
I understand you might need more information to offer advise, but the system is effectively frozen, I need to have a responsive shell to provide more information. So this is basically a dead loop now ... Any help is appreciated, thanks in advance!

First question: did you force just the util-linux package, or did you actually do `pacman -Syyu --force`.
I think the former would have been a mistake, but the latter would be a major f&*^ up.  It might be useful to know just how wrong this could have gone.

It has always been very basic to always maintain a backup copy of your computer for this very occasion.  USe your backup copy to put everything on the new computer, then sync.

Can anyone tell me how to find what OS I'm using on the Mac?
    Tiger or Leopard?
Also, how do I update from 10.6.8 to the latest version?

Go to the Apple menu and select "About This Mac". You will get a window similar to this one -
You current OS X version number will be shown as I've marked.
OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, 10.5.x is Leopard, 10.6.x is Snow Leopard, 10.7.x is Lion, and 10.8.x is Mountain Lion.
Whether or not you can go to the latest OS X version depends upon your hardware -
You will need to purchase the retail set for the OS X version you want; there is no pint in getting and installing any intermediate versions. Once the retail version has been installed, you can update it to the latest release for that version via download updater.

  • Active Directory Admins--Push out Windows updates?

Is it possible to push out iTunes updates to WindowsXP users? With a few exceptions the users on our network do not have admin rights and cannot install software and it is a pain to have to go to each computer to install updates. Is there a way to create WindowsXP packages to push out via Group Policy?
With our Mac users this is a breeze using Apple Remote Desktop.

I could be wrong, but I don't believe that it's possible to push out OS or application updates just via a Group Policy in AD. At least in every place I've worked, we've needed to run other software such as Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager or LANDesk to handle pushing updates. You might be able to set a Group Policy to force Apple Software Update to run, but if so I haven't yet found a way; I can find ways to block ASU but not to force it.
You may need to take this question up on a Windows-oriented discussions forum, though, for more discussion and options.
    Regards.

but receive the same error when performing the update. Any idea as to what is causing this?

  • Rule Engine Update service is not getting up

Rule Engine Update service is not getting up given below error(screenshot attached)
    Error Details:
Windows could not start the Rule Engine Update Service service on local computer
Error 1053: The service did not respond to the start or control request in a timely fashion
I had installed CU7 and increase timeout time but no luck..after uninstalled OS patch "Security Update for Microsoft Windows", service (Rule engine update service) can start again. Our wintel team want this OS patch for security in BizTalk server.
Could you please suggest how we can have security patch with rule engine service up.
    Regards
    Suman

If that specific patch is causing a conflict with CU7 or Rules Engine Update Service, the best option would be to LOG a case with Microsoft and let them either fix it or provide a justification of why that specific Windows Patch is not a good idea (file
an exemption in case of later with the customer/security team).

  • HT1557 OS X 10.5.8 (which is an OS X version also no longer being updated by Apple). Is this true? if yes, why is that?

I have Mac OS X 10.5.8 instslled on my my iMac and I've got this message using chrome...
Chrome no longer supports Mac OS X 10.5
Google Chrome on Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard) will stop receiving any updates following Chrome 21. This includes new features, security fixes and stability updates. If you’re not sure what OS version you’re on, go to the Apple icon on the top left corner and click About This Mac to find out. If you already have Chrome installed, you can still use Chrome, but it will no longer be auto-updated. In addition, you’ll be unable to install Chrome on any Mac still running 10.5 (which is an OS X version also no longer being updated by Apple). While we understand this is an inconvenience, we are making this change to ensure we can continue to deliver a safe, secure, and stable Chrome for the most Mac users possible.

My brother finally realized his 2006 iMac was no longer supported and that security updates are more important than ever.  There was one patch to help with the recent flash-based <?> malware for those systems running 10.5.8
Lion though allows you, if you buy Parallels 7 and have Snow Leopard (there is a $69 flash memory OS with both from Apple) you can run 10.6.8 as a guest OS VM under Lion - if you have the resources to do so to run "reasonably" well.
Seeing how the iMac has not been updated for many many months and due for a refresh, and there is Mountain Lion on the near horizon -
In the meantime, the latest Chrome did include a lot of security patches (scares me that we think we are safe and secure and they are open about it, but not sure if my trust is warranted). FF 13.x still supporting you?
Is your Mac eligible for 10.8? then of course maybe time to get ready -Lion dropped Rosetta and therefore support for older PowerPC code base. So you might have some housecleaning and updates that are needed.

And to find other iMac users... you might want to go here: (and maybe we can get this moved)
