Screen Saver in Background

I made a simple apple script program to put the screensaver in the backgroud.
The code is:
display dialog "Start the Matrix:" buttons {"ON", "OFF"} default button 1
copy the result as list to {buttonpressed}
try
if the buttonpressed is "ON" then
                    do shell script "/System/Library/Frameworks/ScreenSaver.framework/Resources/ScreenSaverEngine.a pp/Contents/MacOS/ScreenSaverEngine -background &> /dev/null &"
else if the buttonpressed is "OFF" then
                    tell application "ScreenSaverEngine" to quit
          end if
end try
All the program does is run a shell script that I heard of from a friend.
I made it at school on a snowleopard computer.
When I took it home and ran it on a Lion computer it worked, but when I changed the Desktop it shut off.
I am wondering if I can resolve this situation.
Thank you.

Sounds like it needs it's preferences reset.
In Finder choose Go>Go To Folder. Enter ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.screensaver.plist
Click go.
Drag the com.apple.screensaver.plist to your desktop.
Log out and back in and test.
If solved delete from desktop.
Hope this helps.

  • Screen Saver and Size of Background - Help, please!

    Hello there!
I have a brand new Dell computer from Best Buy. With my last computer (Gateway), I was able to set up an automatic screen saver of a slideshow of pictures if my computer was not used for a certain amount of minutes.
With this new computer, I have set up the same settings, but the screen saver NEVER comes on. I have clicked everything I need to, accepted, and saved the settings, but it never works. Any ideas?
I decided to try and fix it myself, so I went into the Control Panel, Appearance and Personalization, Change Screen Saver, and then went into Power Settings to see if maybe the display wasn't working for this reason. I cannot remember what I did, but now the background picture is HUGE.
To fix this, I have gone into screen resolution and display/power settings, but everything seems to be set to "recommended", so I cannot figure out what happened to make the images so large suddenly.
    1) Can you help me get the screen saver slideshow to activate?
    2) How do I get my background pictures back to normal size?
Thank you so much for your help!!! I really appreciate it.

Wow, so sorry for the hype delayed response. it could be that your laptop was timing out for powersave before the screensaver would kick in. The best thing to do is go into your screen saver, set it to 1 minute and then let it sit for a minute without touching it (with it plugged in). It should kick in. Again, most laptops cut the monitor off after just a few minutes to conserve the power of the battery. I'm glad that the other solution worked for you =)

  • Image quality for background and screen saver

    Hi
I have recently upgraded to Aperture 2.1. To take advantage of the additional/improved RAW image features, I have been migrating my older images from their original 1.1 RAW fine tuning to 2.0. However, after migrating most of my library (over 10k images) I have noticed that images using 2.0 have dramatically lost their sharpness when on the background & screen saver display. I have a 30" HD Apple Cinema Display, and the images look fine within Aperture itself. I've looked through the menus on System Preferences and Aperture Preferences but can't see anything obvious that would be causing this lack of quality.
If anyone knows how to solve this I would be extremely grateful - I take a lot of photos, and usually have my most recent images on the screen saver as it helps me to evaluate them prior to culling!
    Kind Regards
    Vinny

    Hi Ian
Thank you for the welcome and advice. I had a look in the preferences for Previews and the settings were not as high as they could be. I have adjusted them to the highest, and also unticked 'use camera jpeg when possible'. This has made a difference.
    Thanks again.

  • I recently upgraded to 0S 10.6.8 on mab pro and now have pink lines around the desktop borders. A horrible red colour appears in the background of the screen saver, and in parts of Safari and other applications including MS Office. please help

I recently upgraded my Macbook Pro to SL OS 10.6.8 and now have pink lines around the desktop borders and some menus. There is also a horrible red colour that appears in the background of photobooth and parts of Safari. The screen saver looks like an alien life form with red in the background. There are odd translucent colours in the background of other applications including MS Office. It looks like a horrible psychedilic trip from the 60's. I ran the upgrade again but nothing changed. Can you help?

Backup your files off the computer (not TimeMachine) and disconnect.
Hold c boot off the 10.6 disk, under the Utilities menu > Disk Utiltiy > Repair Disk, and Repair Permissions
(quit and stop if Disk Repair (only) issues a failure and notify us)
Quit and install 10.6 again, reboot and Software Update again,  this time download it and then run it. Check Software Update until clear.
c boot off the 10.6 disk and use Disk Utility >Repair Disk again (fixes a bug)
Reboot and check any installed programs, some may not function who have installed kext files into OS X, those need to be reinstalled.
You didn't mention if you upgraded from 10.5 or 10.6.7, the above steps are for fixing a 10.6 to 10.6.8
If you upgraded from 10.5, you should erase the drive in Disk Utility first, then install 10.6 fresh, but then all your programs will have to be reinstalled or updated from original sources.
Also the 10.6.3 upgrade disk has no free iLife, but you can install 10.5 fresh then upgrade to 10.6.3, then to 10.6.8 and then all new programs and that will give free iLife that came on the factory 10.5 disks.
You also can use Pacifist to extract iLife from 10.5 disks.

  • Lion install did not update background/screen saver images

  • Anyway to get screen saver images as desktop backgrounds?

I have looked through my library under screen savers but nothing is there. I want to get one of the nature screen saver images to be my desktop background picture. Any ideas?

Please provide some information about how you are looking. With my MBP it's as simple as:
System Preferences, Desktop & Screen Saver, Nature and then choose the picture I want. You can also link it to any other picture library you might have such as iPhoto or if you want to download screen savers with different art there are many many sites available. For example:

  • Feature Request- Save in Background in Full Screen

I work in full screen with Menu Bars 98% of the time.  I also enjoy the new save in background feature.
The problem is that when in full screen I can't tell when it's saving and the status of the save.  This is particularly frustrating when I'm trying to close a file.  I think there needs to be an option to have it save in background but pop up a status window, or some way to see the status of the save while in full screen.

Thanks for the suggestion.  However it still doesn't show the bar with the save status when I have the floating window on a second screen and photoshop in another.  The bottom status bar is attached to the document not the main photoshop window.  So no matter where you have photoshop, if you make a document full screen it hides that bottom bar.
I don't think of this as having my cake and eating it too either.  Full screen mode with menu bars doesn't exist to minimize distractions (though some may use it for that), but rather to maximize screen real estate.  I'm using it so I can pan and flick my images from spot to spot while I retouch.   Since they already give us the option to have full screen with menu bars, then I just think it would be nice to have the bottom status bar show as well while in full scren mode.  I've always wished I could still see that in full screen to manage efficency while working on large files, but it's never been a bother.  Now that it is also where the save status is showing, I just think it would be great to be able to see it in full screen with menu bars mode.  And if not, then still be able to have the Save dialog status window pop up while having background save enabled.
** i totally forgot about turning on timing and efficency in the Info panel . That would be a perfect place for them to put the saving status since they already have the other options there.

  • HT1338 whenever I access my screen saver my computer freezes. Trying to change my background picture.

Hey, I am trying to change my background picture but everytime I try my computer freezes. What do I need to do, help.
    Thanks in advance!

I just did a little test and changed something in my Screen Saver settings and looked to see what changed (just had a Finder window open in my ~/Library/Preferences and had the "Date Modified" column selected so that the most recent change would appear at the top) and noticed that the file called com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file changed (the xxxx is a hex number that is part of your UUID, or perhaps the whole UUID, as have seen it both ways). This screensaver preferences file is located in ~/Library/Preferences/ByHost which makes sense, as every user would need their own set of screen saver preferences on each host.
Looking at this file in TextWrangler it looks like this:
    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
    <plist version="1.0">
    <dict>
    <key>askForPassword</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    <key>idleTime</key>
    <integer>300</integer>
    <key>lastNonRandomModuleName</key>
    <string>Flurry</string>
    <key>moduleName</key>
    <string>Flurry</string>
    <key>modulePath</key>
    <string>/System/Library/Screen Savers/Flurry.saver</string>
    <key>tokenRemovalAction</key>
    <integer>0</integer>
    </dict>
    </plist>
    Hope that helps.
One thing I did have a question about is how to find the UUID. On a Mac Pro system the command:
    system_profiler | grep -i uuid
returned the expected number that was part of the com.apple.screensaver.xxxx.plist file, but this did not work on a MacBook Pro. No luck trying to find out why so far. Anyone have any ideas? There is also a UUID associated with a disk volume, that appears to have nothing to do with the UUID associated with the system. So the UUID I'm talking about here is for the system, not a disk.

  • Time Machine Background for my desktop or screen saver

How can I use the vortex time machine background for my desktop or screen saver background?
    Thanks

    Hello,
In short....you can't. You can use the static image as a wallpaper or slideshow ScreenSaver but you cannot use the "Vortex" engine for the animated Time Machine effects. It appears that the "Vortex" engine is part of the Resources for the Finder application itself as evidenced by the related files and images found in the Finder application Package. I don't know if anyone could create a "hack", utilizing the existing resources, to make a ScreenSaver file or not. I have zero experience with ScreenSavers. I just use them.
I know that there are interesting integer parameters in some of the "Vortex" files but I do not have the "bullocks" to experiment with them.
    Sorry.....

  • Itunes album used as background music to screen saver

I have a screen saver that has it's own music and I check mute on the screen saver option. I want to use an album I created as the music for the screen saver. The problem is when the screen saver is active itunes is silenced. I cannot find a way to integrate the screen saver and music either through iphoto or imovie. Any suggestions or is this not possible?????

how to set up iTunes for playback so that track does not automatically follow track
This may be possible with a newer iTunes but is not possible in my iTunes (version 7.5).  I would also suggest checking the Dougscripts web site for one called "play just this one" which plays only the selected track.
Alternatively, display the files in Finder and open them with Quicktime Player.  A window will be opened for each file you open and let you play them one by one.
how to burn a cd so that the specified gap between tracks is neither 'none' nor a number of seconds, but no continuous playing track after track.
As I said, this is not possible.  There is nothing you can do to the CD itself to do this.  It is not something that is a feature of the CD, it is done purely by the device you use to play the CD and all I have used do continuous playback.  The only thing you can change about the CD is content, the order, and the gap between tracks.

  • Screen saver lag in loading photos from new folder

I use my screen saver to display the family photos in a side show. I have several thousand photos in several folders. I have noticed that whenever I want to change the folder used as the side show source, it takes the Screen Saver Preference pane a very long time to respond. It is as if it is scanning all the photos in the currently assigned folder in order to display them in the preview window provided, and it gets so dogged down doing that it can't respond to my clicks on the Choose Folder option. This is puzzling because when I move my mouse cursor to the upper left corner of my screen to activate the screen saver, it only takes a few seconds to begin displaying photos, even with iTunes and other apps running. But when I open the Screen Saver Preference Pane just to change the source folder or to make any other simple change in options (pan and zoom, time to activate screen saver, etc.) it bogs down completely for 2-3 minutes. This makes no sense to me -- if the OS can get the screen saver side show going on a folder with several thousand photos in just seconds when the hot corner is used to activate it, why does it take the Preference Pane version so long to load the very same photos in a preview window? The problem is so bad, that I rarely bother to change source folders now. Which is a shame, because the side show program does a stellar job displaying photos -- at least once it gets around to it! A possible solution would be to give the user the option to suppress previewing of images. I have suggested this to Apple in several emails, and with each update to the OS I hope to find the problem corrected. So far, no cigar.
As long as I'm at it, I'd like to make my annual request that Apple to make the Screen Saver side show a stand-alone application. My reasons, partly taken from an earlier post, are as follows. The built-in side show provided by Apple via the Screen Saver Preference Pane does a fantastic job of displaying even low-resolution photos in full-screen mode (especially with pan and zoom activated) without the photo appearing excessively blurry or pixelized. I don't know how the Apple programmers do it, but the photos displayed by the screen saver seem crisper and sharper than the same photos displayed by Preview or Photoshop. This may partly be due to an illusion created by the pan and zoom -- the expansion and shifting of the image on the screen causes the mind to focus on the signal, which is consistent from frame to frame, as opposed to the noise (pixelization) which varies somewhat randomly. I think there is some kind of perceptual averaging process that allows the mind to perceive the underlying true image, despite the low resolution.
Be that as it may, I love the iMac screen saver. But I can't get control of it because it is not a stand-alone app. If the side show were available as stand-alone application it would probably have other features such as the ability to pause, go backward or forward, set the duration of each photo, select background music, etc. These would be in addition to the pan and zoom options already offered by the Screen Saver Preference Pane. And unlike the Preference Pane, selecting a new folder for the side show would (hopefully) not dog the machine completely down.
I am aware that side show capability is available within iPhoto and also at the FINDER level when using Spotlight to search for images. But again, none of these are stand alone apps, they all work a little differently, and no one of them does everything you need. How about just having an app called Slideshow (or iSlideshow)?
Does anyone else see a need for this?

I have several thousand photos in several folders. I have noticed that whenever I want to change the folder used as the side show source, it takes the Screen Saver Preference pane a very long time to respond. It is as if it is scanning all the photos in the currently assigned folder in order to display them in the preview window provided, and it gets so dogged down doing that it can't respond to my clicks on the Choose Folder option.
Assuming you don't want to redistribute your photos into a greater number of folders or subfolders so there would be fewer in each folder to process, you could try a workaround. Try moving your currently-assigned folder to your desktop temporarily, before opening the Screen Saver preference pane. If the preference pane can't find the old folder, it may immediately ask you to choose a new one. You could hopefully then do so, close the preference pane, and then put back the old folder.
It's my understanding that there will be no future updates to Tiger, only security fixes.

  • Not letting me change my screen saver

Every time I open up system preferences and click on "Desktop & Screen Saver" and then click on the "Screen Saver" tab... the system pref. freezes and closes unexpectedly
It lets me change my background but whenever i try to change my screen saver it keeps "Quitting unexpectedly"
then it gives me the option to reopen system pref., report the message to apple (which i have done) or close it... then when I click reopen, i click again on desktop and screen saver and it freezes again and another error message opens up and says
the application system preferences quit unexpectedly after it was reopened... and i have a new set of options
    Close, Try Again, or Report
So i click try again and it does actually let me access the screen saver tab... and i change it from what it is now which is the iTunes artwork
and when i click close or quit system pref. another window pops up that says...
New settings have been created for this application.. do you wish to use these settings from now on? and so i click "Use New Settings" rather than "Use original settings"
but then when i start my screensaver... it STILL is my original screen saver that i had before...
so WHY won't it let me change it
    I have a MacBook Pro 15" glossy, 160 GB 2.4GHZ
i bought it in July so its still brand new so what is the problem?
    Help would be MUCH appreciated

My program runs 24/7 monitoring an exhaust stream. The program usually nruns in the background. When the chart display is called up the display is not correct. this also happens when the screen saver has been on. How can I get the display to redraw the chart to diaplay correctly.

This usually happens when the popup panel is not in memory and doesn't
know that it will ever need to be used. At compile time, LV optimizes
your code to leave out display calls and to leave out front panel data
copies if it thinks they will never be seen.
In the days before property nodes and invoke nodes, LV always got this
guess right, but these days it is possible to fool it. If you have a
subVI with no property nodes, and it doesn't use the VI Properties
    to
Open panel on call, LV may optimize out the chart's buffer accumulation.
Then when the window opens, the buffer data is empty or old.
If you place a property node on the diagram for the popup panel, even
just to read the value of the panel visible property, LV will leave the
accumulation code in and the chart should have correct values when the
    panel opens.
