Screen saver puts monitor to sleep after 5 minutes regardless of settings

Within System Preferences, I have set the Energy Saver to put my display to sleep after 15 minutes of disuse—yet it goes to sleep after 5. I have tried changing the display settings to 30 minutes, 1 hour, Never, etc., and nothing works; it always goes to sleep after 5, even when I have unchecked the selection for putting the hard disc(s) to sleep when possible. Does anyone know what would be causing this or another setting I am somehow overlooking?

  • Energy Saver - Put Monitor to Sleep

I don't know if this has always been the case, but I noticed my iMac 20" display doesn't go to sleep.. I have it set for 25min ( Screen Saver at 15 ) ..
I've fooled with it a few times.. nothing..
Could a program I have running be over-riding it ? ( I know most video players over ride screen saver and the like, but I close them.. )
Could it be, most of the time I use the mouse to activate the Screen Saver as a hotspot ?
Could it be my Second Display ? ( Acer 32" LCD TV.. )
    Help would be nice..

I'm having the same problem. I think it has started that since I put 10.4.10 on but I'm not positive.

  • Some Preferences not sticking ie screen saver jump back to random after setting a particular screen saver

I set a specific screen saver in the preferences file, after a reboot, random savers box is always checked. Also when I move items to the side bar they stay there until a start-up after which they have disappeared.
    Thx  AL

I think that it is something wrong with kernel and graphic drivers but i'm not able to solve it from the beginning of using of Arch by me.
I'm not so sure this issue is software-related only because in my case it seems the laptop screen enters power-saving mode (10-min timeout) on its own without any events logged (as shown by dmesg) so my next thought was OK, I'm going to get rid of this issue disabling the screen power-saving timeout in the BIOS and set it to never power down or something like that and from then on managing power mode manually; ie: when I want to power down I will just use systemctl suspend/hibernate which work fine ... problem is: there are no related options in my BIOS for such timeout.
The only timeouts I have are in /etc/systemd/logind.conf set to 30min (#IdleActionSec) (commented) by default so these are not in effect because the screens goes blank after 10m which is less than the (default) 30m in logind. Maybe setting loggind to 9m (un-commented) to catch the event before the machine-default one ?
    IdleActionSec=9min
    IdleAction=suspend
Will check it and report back.

  • How can get my Iphotos as screen saver ...all disappeared after upgrading ...I have done as suggested in deleting the files from the Finder ..now just left with the "squirly default " screensaver option

How can I get  my Iphotos to show as my screen saver please ?  all disappeared after upgrading ...I have done as suggested and deleted all relevant files , but now am only left with the "Squirly " screen saver option in the drop down menu and no option for Iphoto library.

Slow, intermittent.  Sometimes bootable sometime not. Odd behavior.
Sounds to me like a classic case of your HD failing.
Your SMART status may still show verified, with no errors on the Apple Hardware Test, Disk Utility shows no problems on Disk Repair-  this is of no help.
I trust you have a good back-up and a bootable clone.

  • I'm using  lion 10.7.1 and ever since upgrading  my preferances are not saved after I shut off the computer. My screen saver is always photos even after changing it, itune always asks if I want to upgrade, even after telling it never to.

When I turn off the computer my preferances are forgot. My screen saver aways goes to photos. Ittune always ask if I want to upgrade even after telling it not to . firefox always goes the upgrade page  a progam I  have to save my clipboard resets itself.

This does appear to be an issue with synergy, but I've also noticed on my C2D Macbook Pro that the screen does not wake from sleep when I simply touch or move around on the touchpad.  Now, I have to hit a button (like return) to get the monitor to wake up.  Submitting a button strike through synergy does not work, though.  Neither does a mouse click on either the trackpad or through synergy.
It also appears that synergy is functioning even though the monitor is off.  My mouse does move to the screen and progress across it (I have a three monitor setup with the Mac in the middle, so I can move it off my left system to my Mac, keep moving, and eventually it will show up on the third screen).  If synergy weren't working, I would expect it to go from screen 1 to screen 3.
So I think there's something up with how Lion detects that the monitor should be reenabled, and synergy is even more affected by that decision.

  • Locking Your Screen Without Putting Machine To Sleep?

Hi, I was wondering, is it possible to lock your screen in Mac OS X 10.4 without putting your machine to sleep? I would like to have running processes continue to run and securing machine at the same time. If this feature doesn't exist, is there an alternative way to accomplish this under Mac OS X 10.4? Well, I must go and thanks in advance.
    Happy New Year,
    -Conrad

Yes, you can set the Screen Saver to have a password which will let things run in the background, and turn off the Energy Saver.
Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Security. Turn on the checkbox "Require password to wake this machine from Sleep or Screen Saver"
Choose the Screen Saver via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Desktop and Screen Saver and change its times there.
Choose Energy Saver (Sleep) via Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Energy Saver to change its times.

How do I communicate to windows to find the Windows screen saver status and the monitor status?

I don't know the particular API calls you need for that, but here's the general way to access Windows innards:
Use the CALL LIBRARY function, and point it to ADVAPI32.dll.
This particular call is set up to call "GetUserNameA", returning the logged-in user's name.
If there's an API for what you need, then configure this function to go call it.

  • Is there a way to put system to sleep after Time Machine runs?

I don't need to run Time Machine every hour, especially since my TM disk is on Firewire and not built in (had a disk fail with TM volume on same disk - bad idea)
When TM runs, it has to spin up the Firewire external disk, so I just run TM by hand now. I'd like to do this when I go to dinner or to sleep etc
Is there a way to have the Mac system sleep after Time Machine finishes running?  An AppleScript perhaps?
    thanks

    William Donelson wrote:
Nope, there is an error message and TM does not automatically run when the drive comes back online.
    What is the error message?
I have not seen one, and that is exactly how I use TM. Unmount, turn off the drive. Turn on the drive, the backup volume mounts automatically and TM resumes its scheduled backups.
Your Console logs will reveal the times in which TM attempted to back up but could not find the device:
    Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Starting automatic backup
    Dec 21 10:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd[1216]: Backup failed with error: 1002
Dec 21 10:23:07 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1198]: Not starting Time Machine backup after wake - failed to resolve alias to backup volume.
Dec 21 11:23:04 Johns-iMac.local com.apple.backupd-helper[1408]: Not starting scheduled Time Machine backup - time machine destination not resolvable.
The last entry will repeat every hour, until it finds the TM device. Its normally scheduled activity will resume when it does.

  • Monitor keeps sleeping after hp update

My computer alarted for an hp update, so I click it and once my computer turned off. The next day, I restarted it and it finished the update. However, after it finished the update, my screen went into sleep mode. I have tried to restart my computer, unplug, restart while hitting F10 on the key board, clicking the mouse.... but my screen keeps on sleeping.<br>can you please tell me why this happened and how I can fix it??<br>Thank you.

  • Energy Saver: Put HDs to Sleep When possible?

Apple implies that this preference, turned on, will save energy. But what about wear and stress on the internal and external HDs as they spin up and down?
I have this pref. set to "on" (the default), but every time that I use the computer and the HDs are not spinning, and I then do something that requires an HD to spin up, all of them spin up, one after the other, before the operation can start. This takes time while all I want to do, for example, is open a document etc. that is not on an external HD. So, setting the pref. to "off" would stop this irritating and recurring delay (the HDs would of course spin down when the computer was put to sleep).
My question is, therefore, would setting this to "off" wear out the HDs significantly?

FWIW, I never sleep desktop computers or their associated HDs, only their displays. Mine run 24/7 and are only restarted when required to switch OSs or install updates. They're only shutdown when going on vacations. Most electromechanical devices failures occur druing power up.

  • Stream 7 Can't Turn off screen without putting tablet into sleep mode

Is there a way to switch the screen off without the tablet going into sleep mode?
So that I can play music in the background?

    Hey @Crixxtachi ,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand you're experiencing issues playing background music while the screen is off.
The tablet will work just like a laptop or desktop and we need to look at some Windows settings for this.
The simplest solution is to access your power management settings, and set the display to go to sleep but not the computer, or at least increase the time before the PC actually enters sleep mode.
I havn't had a chance to test a Windows tablet yet but I would assume that in the power management settings you should see something on the left hand side that says "Change what pressing the power buttons do." In here you may be able to set it to turn off the display.
Let me know if that helps.
Please click the "Kudos, Thumbs Up" at the bottom of this post if you want to say "Thanks" for helping!

  • Apple TV unresponsive after 15 minutes in screen saver

    Hi,
I have a 1 week old Apple TV. It works great until you leave the room. Then, after the screen saver kicks in for about 10 minutes, it will no longer accept commands from the remote.
The remote is unpaired, and I also tried my macbook remote on it, and that doesn't work either.
I have swapped batteries in the remotes, this didn't work.
The one intersesting thing is although I cannot get out of screen saver mode with the remote, I can hit Menu and - and reboot the apple TV.
The other issue is upon reset, it hangs on the Apple screen. The only way to succesfully reset is to unplug and leave it for at least 15 minutes.
What I have not yet tried:
    1) Disabling the screen saver completely
    2) factory reset

It was bought online through a third party retailer, so its not exactly as convenient as driving to the store. I'd rather exhaust my options before having to send it back.

  • Screen saver + Energy Saver (Computer Sleep + Display Sleep) won't work since Mavericks

    Howdy,
    Sorry to bother you.
My computer: iMac (21.5-inch Mid 2011), Mac OS X (10.7.3)
It took me some time to upgrade to Mavericks, but I did it eventually.
After having some problems with Spotlight (which was infinite looping indexing... and I just had to turn if off from Terminal), I realized I was encountering another big problem to me since the installation of Mavericks.
    In System Preferences:
    - 'Desktop and Screen Saver > Screen Saver' : it is set to 1 minute;
    - 'Energy Saver > Computer Sleep' : it is set to 10 minutes;
    - 'Energy Saver > Display Sleep' : it is set to 5 minutes;
    - 'Energy Saver > Put hard disks to sleep when possible' : it is checked.
    - 'Energy Saver > Wake for network access' : it was checked. I unchecked it. Nothing changes.
    - 'Energy Saver > Start up automatically after a power failure' : it is unchecked.
    - 'Energy Saver > Allow power button to put computer to sleep' : this option is absent from my System Preferences > Energy Saver, but I would like it.
So, before Mavericks, everything was working great.
Now, after 1 minute, or after 5 minutes, or after 10 minutes: it's all the same. Nothing is sleepy. Nothing is energy saving.
I did not change anything in my computer since I've updated to Mavericks. However, I changed Wi-Fi. Since it was the only new change, I've "played" with 'Energy Saver > Wake for network access'. When I opened my System Preferences, it was checked. I unchecked it. It did not change anything. I'm not sure what it's used for.
I would appreciate any advice to make it work as it used to.
Thanks for your time reading and typing your answer,
    Have a good day,
    Regards,

    - 'Energy Saver > Allow power button to put computer to sleep' : this option is absent from my System Preferences > Energy Saver, but I would like it.
    Built into the Software now.
    Do a backup.
    Quit the application.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Restart, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the application is the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.
Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.
You might try Spotlight again. That is how the App Store knows what is installed.
