Screen Sharpness.

I have a problem that I can't accurately describe. The colours of my laptop screen seem...Dull for lack of a better word. They're not very sharp in comparison to my Xubuntu install, and in fact the entire image seems to feel stretched. I can only assume i've somehow misconfigured my Xorg.conf.

Update:
Out of lack of ideas of what to do, I remade my Xorg.conf file using hwd. It remade and used the vesa driver instead of the intel one i've been using. Using the Vesa driver removed the problem of a stretched and un-sharp (for lack of a better term) image, but added the problem of two large black bars down either side of the screen, so I switched back to intel.
So I've pretty much ruled out a misconfigured Xorg.conf
The problem might lie in the driver, but I doubt it. The Arch Wiki seems to have got it working fine before. (But gives little detail other than "Works with xf86-video-intel-2.0.")
What else could it possibly be? I'm tearing my hair out trying to figure it out. Maybe my Desktop Environment, LXDE?

  • Problems with getting 2nd screen sharp

    Dear everyone!
Not too long ago I've bought myself a Macbook Pro 15 inch (version 10.7.3) and with it I also got myself a Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (by Moshi).
After I got those I also got myself a HDMI-cable to connect my MBP to my Samsung tv (1080p full HD).
After getting the 2 connected and inserting the right variables (resolution to 1080p)(frequency to 60 hz), also tried to change the settings of the TV itselft but the screen is just VERY blurry, not sharp at all.
Does anyone have a solution for this problem? Or am I missing something important ? Some help would be greatly appriciated.

On the Samsung TV bring up the Source List and highlight HDMI1/DVI.  Click the Tools button on the remote and select Edit Name and set the name to DVI PC.

  • W540 - Screen Sharpness of IE vs Chrome

Anyone notice that IE 11.x is VERY SHARP, text, images, etc, but Chrome is fuzzy?  I've not tried Firefox....
There must be something odd in my settings of Chrome.  Any comment??

    Hey Bauden,
You can track the issue here: https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=149881&can=5&colspec=ID%20Pri%20M%20Iteration%20...
Chrome becomes fuzzy once I have DPI scaling above 200%.  There is a partial workaround involving a setting in chrome://flags/ but it is not a full solution.  The UI chrome is shrunk and you'll have to manually zoom in on the page.

  • 15" screen sharpness since last update

    Hi
I downloaded the last OS update and security fix to my computer this morning, and now my screen has gone out of wack..
everything appears blurred, just enough to make it difficult to look at the screen, i noticed in the 17" screen forum this happened to someone else ? any ideas? as work today is gonna end in one big headache!

Hey! fixed it! it was in the universal access section of the system preferences, it has switched zoom on when i upgraded ? hope this can be of help to someone else!

  • How to enable execute-disable bit and other hidden settings on Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769!

2008-11-16: I have posted some more settings, scroll down to message 19 in this thread to read them.
    Hi,
Here's some good news for anyone with a Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769, who is disappointed and frustrated with the lack of options in the BIOS setup menu. (I had a moan about that in this thread.)
This is a long post but I hope you'll find it worthwhile. Here are the features/settings which I will explain how to enable:
The BIOS disables the execute-disable bit function of the CPU, with no way to turn it on. You can enable it.
You can set VGA and VESA graphics modes to not be stretched to fill the whole screen (sharper graphics with no distorted aspect ratio).
Speed up the POST display by skipping the memory test
Disable various features (if you don't use them, that might save some power): the HD audio controller, WLAN card, on-board LAN, shadowing of the video BIOS
Enable beep before booting the OS
Enable key click sound (only in DOS, not Windows or Linux)
I'm still working on this, and hope to figure out more hidden settings soon, e.g. to disable the DVD drive and trackpad, and to change the video output from NTSC to PAL.
The information below applies to the Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769 with BIOS version 3.03. My N200 has Nvidia graphics. For some background on the general principles/research required to figure this out, please see this thread at Wimsbios.com.
To change the settings, you need to create a bootable DOS floppy disk or USB drive. Download SYMCMOS.EXE (Google for it) and put it on the bootable disk. Boot the disk and run SYMCMOS to back up your current CMOS settings: SYMCMOS -Lsettings.txt
Next load the settings.txt into a text editor. It will begin like this:
    ( SYMBOLIC CMOS EDITOR - Version 643710-035 )
    CRC = 3EDD
    (0000) [0001]
    (0003) [0001]
Your CRC value may differ. Each line after the CRC contains a token number, followed by the value of that token. You can start with the settings.txt you created and edit any tokens you want to change, or delete all token lines and just include the tokens you want to change. Then use SYMCMOS.EXE to apply the new file: SYMCMOS -V2 -Uupdate.txt
After running that command you can reset, and hopefully notice the new settings in action. (For certain settings, such as re-enabling the execute-disable bit, you need to turn the computer off then on again.)
Here are some specific tokens you can change:
    Token Default New Description
(0000) [0001] [0000] Disable the HD audio controller
    (0042) [0001] [0000] Disable LCD panel graphics scaling/stretching
(004B) [0000] [0001] Beep before booting the OS
(0267) [0001] [0000] Enable support for the CPU execute-disable bit
(028E) [0000] [0001] Enable key click (only works in DOS and BIOS setup)
(02A3) [0001] Set to 0 for slower memory test, or 2 (or 3?) to skip
test for faster booting, especially with 4GB RAM
(046E) [0001] [0000] Disable video BIOS shadowing. (Best to leave enabled.)
    (0471) [0000] [0001] Enable 1MB memory hole at 15MB. (Best leave disabled.)
(0486) [0001] [0000] Disable PCI Express ports 1-6. This takes precedence
over the individual port bits below, and disables the
LAN, WLAN and (probably) ExpressCard port.
(0489) [0001] [0000] Disable PCI Express port 2 (WLAN card)
(048C) [0001] [0000] Disable PCI Express port 3 (maybe ExpressCard?)
    (048F) [0001] [0000] Disable PCI Express port 4 (LAN)
For example, if you want to disable LCD panel scaling and enable the execute-disable bit, you would create a text file like this:
    CRC = 3EDD
    (0042) [0000]
    (0267) [0001]
    Some final points:
Loading the default settings in the BIOS setup menu will overwrite any changes you make using SYMCMOS.EXE. So keep that bootable disk around in case you need to re-apply your settings in future.
The token numbers above are specific to version 3.03 of the Lenovo 3000 N200 model 0769 BIOS. They might be different for earlier BIOS versions, and will be different for other models of computer.
Once you have created a bootable floppy disk with a text file containing your updated settings, you could create a bootable CD with the floppy's data on. Just boot that CD to restore your settings in future.
Before experimenting with randomly changing token values to discover other hidden settings, make sure you know how to reset your computer's CMOS memory! Changing some settings results in your computer becoming unable to boot, so you can't use the BIOS setup screen to reset. I wrote about how to reset the N200 model 0769 CMOS in this thread.
If you discover any other settings, please let me know.
Any changes made are at your own risk; if you "brick" your laptop don't blame me!

  • What is your Review of the 928

A User Review on the Nokia Lumia 928.
Got my Nokia 928 a few days ago. First, overall the phone is GREAT and I would recommend it to anyone. IMO it is the Best Windows Phone to date. I will also say that in comparison to the other Operating System’s; Android and iOS, Windows Phone 8 OS is better and faster in my opinion. Of course that is Subjective. Everyone has his or her preference as to the features, apps, size, style, color and specs of a phone that work for them and that’s just fine. My sister likes the iphone 5 and it works just fine for here. My younger brother likes Android ICS and it works fine for him. The point is, I nor anyone else has to convince each person that they should buy a particular Phone. Having said that this is just a review for anyone not sure of Windows Phone 8.
    The Pros and the Cons.
    Pros:
    1.      The Operating System: The Windows Phone 8 OS is
smooth fast and responsive. It runs faster on a lower processor than a newer Android’s faster quad processor. The point is, it doesn’t have to have 4 or more processors to run smoother and faster. Though I have not had it longer the 8 days as of this review I nor the persons I know who have a WP8, have not experienced the lags, bugs and many reboots I have had with Android Phones and Tablets.  I didn’t like the Windows Tiles when I first heard or seen them in pictures, but expect for the plain colors (you eventually get use to them) they work great. The Live Tiles update you on all the info you need on one screen without having to click on a bunch of different apps Mail, Facebook, Weather, Agenda, Calender, Messaging are all updated right on the front screen. You can customize the look, size, color of your Tiles and change them with ease.
    2.      The Camera: This has to be one of the best cameras on a Phone. You will not be disappoint on the pictures it takes in daylight or low light. Nokia is hyping up this Camera and I have to agree. The Camera alone is a good reason to get this phone.
    3.       Call Quality is good: Both calling and receiving. The speaker on it is loud and clear.
    4.      The Display is great with the AMOLED Display. It makes the screen sharp and clear and great even it sunlight. The Size at 4.5 inches is also a nice size, not too big and not too small.
    5.      Xenon Flash: Brighter and better Flash as found on some standalone cameras.
    6.      HD 1080p recording with great noise canceling mics. Also has front Facing 1.2MP camera.
    7.      32 GB internal storage
    8.      4G Network: I haven’t had the chance to fully test it yet, but my pages load super-fast and my downloads are fast as well.
    9.      Battery: Battery usage for a smartphone is Good. It also has wireless charging.
    10.   APPS: There is a lot of criticism with this OS and lack of apps. This area is where people have to put things in the right
prospective. Yes iOS and Android has more Apps than WP8. I have to laugh a little when this argument is brought up. First who downloads that many apps? Second putting thing in the right prospective, iOS and Android is 5years old. Developers have had plenty of time to make apps. Windows Phone is going on 3years old with Window Phone 8 being only 6 months old with over 145,000 to date. Most of the top apps or equivalent is available right now on the WP store, with more being added as the months go buy. The point is, it took both Android and Apple years to get to the app count they have now. Besides most of the apps on those system or useless apps that don’t say on a phone for long yet alone even make it to ones phone. Again my point is most of the main or equivalent apps that people use are either on the store or in development. If Windows Phone 8 sells great(and I think it will) more apps will come faster. Anyway Nokia has a set of apps that make this phone stand out itself, Nokia Music, Nokia City Lens: Nokia Maps, Nokia Drive. There are plenty of other apps that make this a great pick.
    Cons:
    1.      No External Storage. I think Nokia made a mistake here. Even though it has an internal 32 gig storage( 23G usable) they should have made room for external storage. I like having my music, videos and some data on a storage card so I am not tied to a computer or downloading data on a cell or wifi. I almost didn’t get the phone because if this.
    2.      No removable battery. I am a heavy user, both personal and work. I like having a couple of charged batteries to throw in when I just can’t charge.
    3.      Lack of Apps? I put this here because in comparison to the other two OS’s, WP8 does have less apps, however I think I make a good point above as to why this is not a good reason to not buy this Phone.
    4.      No FM Radio: other Nokia Phones have the radio turned on. Though I heard that it can be turned on in a firmware update.
    5.      No Etiquette: My own personal preference; a feature that mutes the phone when you face it down.
    6.      Wish it had a stylus for notes: My own personal preference
    7.      No Swype Keyboard: My own personal preference
    8.      Unless I am wrong, No Video output to TV.
Ok so for what it is worth, this is just an opinion for a user and not a article writer, and Yes I have had both Android and Iphone.

Reviews? (not saying yours is one of em). YELP just announced some big  lawsuits vs groups posting glowing product reviews on their web site.  YELP isn't the only one with that issue On this site Ive seen glowing   post on top of glowing post for a phone that's still in pre order stage  unless you can get one in a store; verbage same review after review,I mention that because I relied on those  reviews to buy the 928 from another site and I'm satisfied those reviews  were pure fiction. Phone hadn't even been out very long, page after page of  glowing reviews
I'm glad its working out for you That phone takes great photos . The rest is all marketing. What apps? Downloaded Mapquest's 4 star rated "voice activated, turn by turn" nav app that adjusts with drivers route. Does none of those things. Got lost 30 miles waiting for it to do so. 2 emails to Maquest "customer service" went unanswered You'll never see a company like Mapquest "marketing" apps that way on Google play or Apple store, no way. Those 170,000 windows store apps are just another page out of the MS "marketing" playbook. Go to a windows mobile forum and look under bugs and defects tab for the 928; page after page of battery life, audio, text, random freezes, update, storage issue for a Lumia phone that owns a 5% share of the total windows mobile market share which stands at bout 3%????? When I had either a nav or music app on I was getting 11% battery drainage rates per 19 minutes. Guess it all depends what you call power user. And I wasn't the only one with that issue.Phone is marketed as 17 hrs continuous usage and 24 standby on one charge. Yeah if you make a few phone calls and take some photos. I returned my 928 2 factory resets, bottomless pit of soft ones and one failed back up later, that phone is all marketing.
PS. Vz's  much awaited flagship 928 windows phone came out in mid may. By mid august "flagship" was selling for free with 2 yr. All marketing. WP8 and I used it for 30 days is one BUGGY platform and that's not an opinion

  • ISight flickering black square

    Hello,
Recently I have been having problems when recording videos through my isight camera directly in imovie HD.
I noticed both large and small black squares flickering on the screen when recording a video. It only appears whilst recording and not during playback of what I've just recorded.
I shut down imovie the first time it happend thinking it was a one off occurance and then it has happend numerous other times.
Has this happend to anyone else?
I thought it may have been due to me playing music in the background through itunes whilst recording the video, which may have caused the problem (and picked up through the isight), but it happens without playing music.
Please help, I might have to take my macbook up to the store if there is no solution as I use imovie all the time to make youtube videos!
    Thanks in advance

    Macbook 13"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    Hello, Michelle
The condition you note is a feature of the software in view of the considerable processor power required for capturing and recording digital video.
When your Mac's processor is working near maximum capacity, OS X and apps like iMovie make decisions of which process should be given priority. When necessary, iMovie sacrifices video monitoring quality to keep record quality high. This seems better to me than keeping the monitor screen sharp but missing frames in the recorded video.
Does your MacBook have the maximum amount of RAM installed. If not, add as much as possible to maximize performance. Additionally, make sure your Mac OS X Maintenance is up-to-date, disconnect all peripherals, quit all other applications before launching iMovie for recording, and make your iMovie window as small as possible. These suggestions will maximize your MacBook's efficiency and minimize processor power requirements while recording.
If the condition persists even when you follow these suggestions, and if you cannot accept the pixilation in the monitor window pane, you can consider capturing your clips with a camcorder or a different movie or video clip application for later import and editing with iMovie.
If none of the above meet your needs, the only remaining suggestion I can offer is that you use a computer with more processor power. For instance, my Dual-Processor G5 Tower Mac is not bothered by pixilation when running iMovie only, but though my old iBook is.
    Cheers,
    Jim

  • Display changes

    Hi
I recently upgraded to Maverick 10.9.4 on my mac book pro.  There is a significant change in the screen sharpness and colours.  Any advice as to how I can get this back to how it was with Mountain Lion which was sharp and full of colour.
    Thanks

You may have zoomed. Hold down the control key and two-finger swipe downward, see if that helps.

  • SHARPEN VIDEO FOR WEBSITE USE

    Hi all,
I've got a couple of instruction films made from recorded computer screens. My task is to change the language for these. I use Premiere Pro 6.0.
    THE MAKING
A "light" compression was used when recording, giving sharp images, that accepted a low frame rate (even though it says 20, it's maybe 2-3 frames per second).
Then the films were saved with good compression, that still gives sharp images.
    THE EDITING
    MP4
In .mp4 which I hear is the best format to use for webpages, the imported image gets blury.
What kind of parametres do I have to change to get a sharper image?
    AVI
I then asked to have it in .avi but this doesn't work at all, error message when importing.
What should I do to make the moving shots originating from screens sharp again?
They are sharp when I look at them in Windows media player.
    Many thanks,
    F

  • How to sharpen resolution on a T43?

    Hello,
How can I make the LCD screen SHARP on my "new" T43  like my older A30? Both are set at 1024x768. Each is running the latest bios update and latest video driver and Xp Pro SP3. The fonts and general apearance of my "new" T43 lcd screen look "cartoonish" when compared to my older A30, which is CRISP and CLEAN at 1024 x 768.   If I run the newer t43 at max resolution, the screen sharpens up, however, everything is diplayed too small for my taste.
Please help, I was excited about my new machine, but with the dismal sharpness, I'm discontented.
FWIW, I'm a network admin, with experience at IBM, so don't be afraid to get technical. I've tried all the normal stuff to fix this and am open to your suggestions.
    Thanks..Nate

Your new T43 has a native resolution that's more than 1024x768. When you set the display to 1024x768 the system uses more than one real pixel to display each virtual pixel. Because the ratio of real pixels to vitual varies (your native resolution isn't a multiple of 1024x768) the result is a loss of sharpness. There's nothing you can do to fix that with the LCD panel in your T43. A couple of other options:
1 attach an external 15" 1024x768 LCD monitor.
    2. replace the LCD panel in your T43 with a compatible 1024x768 FRU.

  • Lenovo K3 Note

Hi All.... I wants to know complete specification,of Lenovo K3 Note mobile. What is its price in India and from where I buy it in India. From some sources I know that it has only 32GB extendable external memory but Xiaomi Redmi Note 4G has 64GB extendable external memory and its price is Rs 7,999.Lenovo K3 Note has not support java,it not have compass,Slightly low screen sharpness,Cannot output to TV,Low battery PPI resolution,Orthodox design, lack of gorilla glass for screen protection,No NFC support,After sale service not provided. Can it is right.Kindly clarify.

Hi fantomas007(That's an interesting name )
    Welcome to the Community.
The Lenovo K3 note is meant to be sold and used only in China. It's a China only model.
Chinese models are only in Chinese&English, don't have GAPPS/GMS(Google services like the Play Store/Not allowed in CN) and are full of Chinese apps(A lot of Chinese...I know).
To cover a wider International market some sellers modify the official Chinese firmware and add GMS/multilingual support.
In this forum we usually deal with ROW/Rest of the World models and as consequence don't have much info on CN only devices.

  • Lenovo L440 review

I'm new to these forums and new to the Thinkpad world, this would be my first Lenovo. I found little reviews on the L440 or 540 models for that matter prior to purchasing so it was a bit of a blind purchase. So for those who are thinking of buying the Thinkpad L440 it is a great computer. I've only used it for a day but in short this is what I've summed up:
Pros: great build quality despite being all plastic it is strong (as I understand all thinkpad's are), no flex rigid keyboard. In my opinion it is light, not ultrabook light by any stretch but definetely not bulky/heavy, I got the HD+ 1600x900 screen-sharp, nice 16x9 format (for Excel etc, this is my work system), the text is sharp for a matte screen. Great keyboard, plenty of ports USB, VGA, display port (I'll probably buy a display port>HDMI adapter).
Cons: Trackpad seems a bit finicky, I also have a tough time not having tradtional buttons but i'm sure with more use I'll get used to it. I prefer a mouse anyway, Hard Drive is heard spinning/loading (it is 7200rpm after all). Again it's not loud but noticeable, although i'll most likely swap an SDD in.
My build is the I5 4200M, 4gbs ram, HD+ screen, no DVD tray-replaced by optical drive, 6cell battery (can't comment on this, haven't had it long enough) and Windows 8.
That's about all I could think of for now with only a day of use. I love it, the build quality and ease of maintenance for future upgrades. Any questions? Feel free to ask!

The motherboard had to be replaced on both L440s in order to fix this problem.

  • Does this really even make a difference?

Does it really upscale the picture quality when you turn off the SD override under options or select stretch? I notice a slight difference when turning it off the picture looks a bit better but also there is alot less screen usage and only a fraction of the screen gets used with those black side bars that look a bit like viewing something in wide screen on the sides. Stretch varies greatly it says that the single is at 720p (my native resolution) but some things actually look worse than they would if I simply left them in 480I or 480p.

NEVER use "Stretch".  As Justin said, it merely distorts the picture.  People should really stop thinking that black bars (top or sides) mean that just because an image does not fill the screen, the TV is not being fully utilized.  The wider screen of your TV is a compromise (approx 1.75:1 ratio), but does not actually serve ANY of the major broadcast ratios.  (1.33:1, 1.85.:1, and 2.35:1)
Older TV programming (and movies filmed before 1955 or so) have a ratio of 1.33:1 (aa different ration than the 16X9 ratio of your TV screen), so bars on the side are necessary to watch the programming in the way it was intended.  Widescreen movies are 2.35:1, again wider than your TV's ratio, so bars are needed at the top and bottom to see the complete image. Some channels, like HBO and EPIX, elimanate the bars by eliminating at least one-third (or more!) of the picture! And yet, even though  that terrible practice fills your TV screen, sharpness and detail is also lost when those channels do that (as any side-by-side comparison shows.), which, to my mind, defeats the purpose of HD..
Also,, using Stretch,  the TV is overscanning, therefore softening the image as you lose 1:1 pixel mapping of most HDTVs.
In a nutshell,  leave the override on OFF. Using artificial means to eliminate black bars actually lessens the quality of the image. (How noticable it is usually depends on the size of the TV and viewing distance.)  But even then, we still have to deal with some channels ruining HD, like HBO/EPIX/STARZ cropping,  or IFC-HD which shows movies in a distorted "stretch" mode already! Absolutely unwatchable. No need to make matters worse in those cases!

  • Ipad mini, ipad 4, or iPhone 5 for gaming?

Hi, I love gaming on ios (no, not Angry birds, hardcore stuff like Modern combat and Real Racing), and my ipod 4 is getting long in the tooth, so I'm going to upgrade, but, I have a problem: I need a powerful ios device that will have great performance and have a good screen to enjoy my games, but be nice to hold and be somewhat light and portable. There are three options here: iPhone 5, iPad Mini, and iPad 4. Pros and cons:
    iPad Mini:
    Good: portability, screen size.
    Bad:power
    IPad 4:
    Good: Power, screen sharpness
Bad:big, heavy, not very.. Nice design
    iPhone 5:
    Good:power, portability.
Bad:battery life (big consideration), a bit small of a screen to immerse me in my games.
I would appreciate help, thank you!

For your gaming, the iPad 4 would be superior. Maybe Apple will improve the next iPad mini.
