Scripting in solaris bourne shell

I was wondering how would it be possible to match a string in a text file and then to choose a value present there.
For exapmle; there is a line in a text file that reads
ACT=ajbg110;PCN=55768;IUYT_ghTTY=88999yt;.......
I need to make a script that is to pick ACT value and PCN value. These values are ajbg110 and 88999yt respectively. Fields are termintaed by ';'
Limitations are :
1) file contains thousands of such lines.
2) each line contains many such fields, not three only. Even there is no fixed number.
3) The position of these fields keeps changing. i.e; ACT is coming first, but it may come in the middle of
the line.
4) value length may change too.
Is threre a possible strategy to get these values seperated.

using perl:
my @lineholder; #declare an array
my @splitholder; #another array
# Supposing you're reading this from the file /tmp/infile
my $infile = "/tmp/infile";
open(INFILE, "< $infile") or die "Unable to open $infile: $!"; #Open a File handle while reading from file
while(<INFILE>) {
push( @lineholder, split( ';', $_ ) ); #Split STDOUT at delim ";" and push into lineholder
for (@lineholder) {
next if ( $_ =~ m/ACT|PCN/ );
# print $_; #Print line if it matches regex above
@splitarray = split( '=', $_ );
print "ACT and PCN pair: @splitarray \n";
I haven't tested it, and since it's perl, I'm sure there's a better way of doing it than this.

• Encrypting password in shell script on Solaris 10.

Hi,
I have a shell script & in that the username & password is specified. I can see the password. Is there any way to encrpyt password in Unix scripts on solaris 10 box.
Please suggest.
Thanks & Regards,
Tejas

Here are some examples of avoiding passwords in scripts.
First, if it's a script that needs to use remote login, you could set up ssh keys in the authorized_keys file of the remote system to allow auto-authentication.
As a more general example, you could create a shell function that prompts for the password and stores it in an environment variable to be used by the script or utility that you want to use. Here is an example that we use in our Red Hat systems to allow yum to tunnel through our http proxy:
function yumproxy(){
        echo -n "Enter Proxy Username: "
        read -e username
        echo -n "Enter Proxy Password: "
        read -es password
        echo
        export http_proxy="http://$username:$password@ourproxyserver:8080/"
}This is in .bashrc so that we can run it once just before running any yum commands (not that this means anything in a Solaris forum!)

• What is bourne shell(sh.exe)??

what is bourne shell(sh.exe)??why it is required and
where to set envirnoment variable NS_server_home in iplanet webserver sp6.2

The bourne shell is a UNIX command shell very similar to windows CMD.exe shell. In a Unix environment you can develop CGIs using the scripting language of this shell. That language is very much like DOS batch files with a UNIX twist.
If you are not ona UNIX machine then this should have little to no meaning to you. If you are ona UNIX machine every time you login to the box you have some sort of shell. If you wish to write CGI scripts using shell scripting you can do something like the following
#!/bin/sh
`/usr/bin/date`
The above shell script will print the date out. Keep in mind CGI programming is much more complicated than the above example.
It should not be required to use the server most especially on Windows. If you are reading documentation saying how to set environment variables and they give a bourne shell example you can simply ignore it. In windows/DOS you set environment variables like the following:
set VAR_NAME=value
However, if you are on a UNIX machine and need to set them in the bourne shell you can do the following.
VAR_NAME=value;export VAR_NAME
If you need it to be permenent you can add the above to the startup scripts such as IWS_HOME_DIR/start
Hope this helps

• TIMEOUT variable in Bourne shell

Does Solaris implementation of bourne shell support the envronmental variable TIMEOUT?
It seems not. Added this variable to /etc/profile but idle bourne sessions are not timing out.
Korn shell environmental variable TMOUT is working fine.

Yes.
I added both variables, TIMEOUT and TMOUT, in /etc/profile.
As expected, TMOUT works fine with korn shell session.
None worked with bourne shell session (/sbin/sh).
I need to time out Bourne shell session and not Bash session.

• Bourne shell, blank characters and quotations

Hello.
I can't figure out how to use single and double quotations in Bourne shell.
Here's a part of a script I'm writing to create a matroska video with several different subtitles :
title=`echo "$1" | sed 's/\.[^.]*$//'`
subs=''
for srt in "$title".*.srt; do
slang=`echo "$srt" | sed 's/.*\.\(...\)\.srt/\1/'`
subs="${subs} --language 0:$slang '$srt'"
done
mkvmerge -o "$title.mkv" $subs -S "$1"
When I type ./myscript 'Gadjo Dilo.avi', it should execute this command :
mkvmerge -o 'Gadjo Dilo.mkv' --language 0:eng 'Gadjo Dilo.eng.srt' --language 0:fre 'Gadjo Dilo.fre.srt' -S 'Gadjo Dilo.avi'
But, using set -x, I discovered it actually execute this :
mkvmerge -o 'Gadjo Dilo.mkv' --language 0:eng ''\''Gadjo' 'Dilo.eng.srt'\''' --language 0:fre ''\''Gadjo' 'Dilo.fre.srt'\''' -S 'Gadjo Dilo.avi'
How should I fix this ? I tried without success many different combinations of single and double quotes.
Thanks.

pokraka wrote:Yes of course I know of this trick but I can't rename all my files.
Any other suggestion ?
Why can't you rename your files?
Instead of
mkvmerge -o "$title.mkv" $subs -S "$1"
try
mkvmerge -o "$title.mkv" "$subs" -S "$1"
(quotes around $subs added)
It helps a bit, but I honestly can't read your code - are all these filename mangling transformations really necessary?
Edit: I'm not using bourne shell, but neither bash nor dash wanted to cooperate fully.
subs="${subs} --language 0:$slang $srt"
(quotes around $srt removed)

• Bourne Shell (sh) - How To Interpret Characters Literally

I know that character enclosed in single quotes are interpreted literally by the Bourne-Again SHell (bash). After all, the man page states:
{quote}
"Enclosing characters in single quotes preserves the literal value of each character within the quotes. A single quote may not occur between single quotes, even when preceded by a backslash."
{quote}
Here's some proof:
bash-3.2$ echo 'hello world'
hello world
bash-3.2$ echo 'hello
world'
hello
world
bash-3.2$ echo 'hello\world'
hello\world
Now I thought that the Bourne shell (sh) worked the same way, but obviously not:
sh-3.2$ echo 'hello world'
hello world
sh-3.2$ echo 'hello
world'
hello
world
sh-3.2$ echo 'hello\world'
helloworld
How do I go about having the Bourne shell (sh) interpret my characters literally?

What the reason you can't/don't want to use bash?
On MacOSX and Linux, /bin/bash and /bin/sh are both GNU bash; the latter is just running in the sh-compatible mode. In this case, the following will work, but it won't work on BSD's and other Unixes, where /bin/sh is not GNU bash:
sh$ shopt -u xpg_echo
sh$ echo 'foo
bar'
foo
bar
The following also works; I don't know which is better (from the portability point of view):
sh$ /bin/echo 'foo
bar'
foo
bar

• Reading output from a Solaris(UNIX) shell script

Hello All, I have written some fairly large shell scripts. I have also written a simple java GUI that contains a button that will run the script. The script runs. The problem is that I cannot see the output from the script in the x-term that I used to run my java class file.
I am developing in a windows environment, I have a silly little system.out that prints "Button Pressed", which works in windows just fine but on my ultra 10 running Solaris 8 the term just sits there no output to the srceen.
Has anyone out there solved this problem or know of a way that I can? Thanks

I don't know how to print out to the x-term. But you can add a JTextArea to the GUI and get the output there.
String output = null;
StringBuffer returnString = new StringBuffer();
String command = /path/to/shell/script/script.sh
process = Runtime.getRuntime().exec(command);
InputStreamReader isr = new InputStreamReader (process.getInputStream());
input = new BufferedReader(isr);
while((output = input.readLine()) != null){
        returnString.append(output);
}Wouldn't a System.out.println(returnString.toString()) print to the x-term console?
hope this helps.

• Need steps to run a shell script at solaris startup

Hi Forum,
I have a simple script which need to get executed at the time of solaris 10 system startup. Can any one tell me procedure to make the script run at startup in solaris 10 sparc systems.
Regards
Prakash

The best way is to setup a SMF manifest so that the svc process can handle your program. The easiest way however is to simply put the script within the legacy init.d structure. Check out /etc/init.d and the README file in there. Also be sure to look into the init.d(4) manualpage.
Easiest way IMO.

• How to create shell script on solaris "TOP" command

Hi All,
i need to write a shell script on unix top command.
Requirement:
In top command grep the more than 25% CPU utilization f60webmx process and that f60webmx process time stamp is more than 3HR's and also needs to grep the load average information in top command.
Please help me some one.

i need to write a shell script on unix top command.You have our permission to begin to do that.
These forums are NOT for doing your work for you. They are here to provide assistance for YOUR work.
I suggest you go get paper and pencil and write down all the steps you think you need to take to accomplish that. Write it down as if you were going to do that manually at the command prompt. Then put it all into a text file and save it with a file name of your script.
When you have that "script", you can run it and examine whether it succeeds or whether it has errors. Work at it for a while and fix whatever errors might happen.
When you are really, really stuck at it, you can paste your script into a reply of this thread and maybe someone will respond with suggestions for improvement.

Recovery Manager complete.
regards

Thanks for the help.
The command has finished now and I didn't get a chance to check the ps -ef command.
As you see in my original post, I am using nohup to run the script in the background and its sending its output to nohup.out file. But in the content of nohup.out file, there is no mention of report generated by RMAN regarding how many blocks it found. Output is as follows:
oracle@TEST # more nohup.out

• Need help on a Script in Solaris

I am using solaris 10.
How do I check if all passwords are shadowed, using a shell script, in bash in terminal? Also, if they are all shadowed, it needs to print "Exception: No", if not all are shadowed, it needs to print "Exception: Yes".
Also,
How do i check if anonymous ftp is not allowed, also using a shell script, in bash in terminal? if they are not allowed, print "exception: no", if they are allowed, print "exception:yes"?
Thank you.

How do I ...The way it works in these forums is that you write the script and then paste is here.
(You will need to paste it inside of formatting code tags as is described in the forum site FAQ that you have already read when you joined.)
You then get assistance with that script.
No one does your work for you.

• Differences in writting bash-script in Solaris and in RHEL?

I wrote a script 'checkinstall' as follow and it works fine by RHEL:
#!/bin/sh
HOSTNAME=hostname
echo $HOSTNAME
if [ $HOSTNAME == "S001AP99-TEST" ]; then
        echo This is the wrong machine.\
        echo "\nAbouting installation.\n\n"
        exit 1
fi
exit 0
But when I run this by Solaris I got:
# ./checkinstall
hostname
./checkinstall: test: unknown operator ==
I changed the line HOSTNAME=hostname to HOSTNAME=`hostname` and it outputs the correct hostname.
But I still get error:
# ./checkinstall
S001AP99-TEST
./checkinstall: test: unknown operator ==

If you want to create bash scripts, then the first step is to set the right shell in the first line => #!/bin/bash
Then, after this important step, you can try if this works. Oh surprise, it's working.
