SDK – Beginner – Installation - Compiler

Background: I have used some HTML in high school. I have scripted in a 3D social chat environment called Second Life. I get the rough idea that you communicate through events, functions, variables, and if statements to communicate what you want a computer to do. I know nothing about Flex/Flash/AS3.0 other then the basic explanations that flash and flex are related and can makes applications that can be run in web browsers. The basic information that is repeated over and over, but still answers none of the “How” do you start.
I ordered three Books: “Action Script for Multiplayer Games and Virtual Worlds” by Jobe Maker, “Foundation Game Design with Flash” by Rex van der spuy, and “Learning Action Script 3.0 for beginners guide” by Rich Shupe with Zevan Rosser.
I have attempted to read each until I started to get lost and although I could follow each for the first chapters, I am completely lose when they ask me to try to make any code because the Flex SDK is a bunch of folders and some files I have no clue what they are for and with no executable file for installing some sort of application I can use. I have downloaded a trial version of Flash CS5 Web package that has a builder and flash professional, but it has likely changed from CS4 which one of the books is based on, so am unable to even start working on the first project in the book. It means a Main.AS file and a Flash.FLA file, yet FLA is not a file in CS5. So I have to put a hold on attempting that and perhaps try to use AS3.0 compiler, if I can find a way to get one or get it to work since it seems like a compiler might not be a program? I am utterly lost.
QUESTION:
I want a program that I can write action script in and compile so I can at the very least “start” to learn. The code will be rather basic at first like the beginning “Hello World” output in text. The issue is I have no clue how to do it in CS5 and I do not see how to install SDK or compile AS3.0 unless I can install something or run some program to do it, because the SDK zip file has folders and some miscellaneous files in it.
Even when I read the installation there is just vague information about license and information that says nothing about the nuts and bolts of how to install and make use of this program/software I do not see.
I am use to an “install.exe” file and you click it, run it, and then run the application that was installed, but with the SDK it sounds like “Here is a compiler program you just type into and compile to run Action Script 3.0.” yet, that is clearly not the case. I am missing some important arcane knowledge that I am not seeing or figuring out.

Hello,  I completely understand your frustration.  A few years ago I was at your exact position.  I did not know what compiler to use,  Heck, I didn't even know what a compiler was.  I learned the hard way, sometimes learning programming languages that I was truly never going to use but wasted time learning it because I didn't know any better.
By no means I am an expert but I felt compelled to write because I went through the exact same thing.
My recommendations are, if you want to play around with ActionScript for Flash Player, I would start with Flex or Flash Builder.  The Reason being is that these programs have code assist which makes programming much easier and faster since they will catch your errors before you compile.
What I did next was to purchase training videos.  I started with Flex and have since upgraded to Flash Builder.  Once you get comfortable with writing code with in Flex or Flash Builder you could incorporate Flash using CS5 if you wanted.  There are literally thousands of training videos out there.  Also check YouTube.  You can get lots and lots of training there as well.
As far as SDK(software developer kit).  I typically get them for Flex or Flash Builder.  There are training video on the web that will show you how to load a particular SDK version on Flex or FlashBuilder.
This is basically how I got started.  Don't get frustrated, there are lots of people out there willing to help if you just ask.
Good Luck

  • [svn] 2716: SDK-15848 - Conditional compilation constants defined in flex-config. xml are never used if a single constant is specified on the command line

    Revision: 2716
    Author: [email protected]
    Date: 2008-08-04 01:18:12 -0700 (Mon, 04 Aug 2008)
    Log Message:
    SDK-15848 - Conditional compilation constants defined in flex-config.xml are never used if a single constant is specified on the command line
    * There's a possibility this will break a conditional complication test which disallows overwriting an existing definition -- I don't know if that will break the build, but the test should be removed either way.
    * Using append syntax ("-define+=" on the command line or ant tasks, or append="true" in flex-config) and redefining a value works now if you use an already-defined namespace and name.
    * So your flex-config may have -define=CONFIG::debug,false, and you may want -define+=CONFIG::debug,true from the commandline build, or FB build.
    * Made the ASC ConfigVar fields final as a sanity check since overwriting is now allowed. It would be harder to track changes and subtle bugs if they were mutable. This means that you must build a new ConfigVar object if you need to make changes.
    Bugs: SDK-15848
    QA: Yes. Please read the updated javadocs in CompilerConfiguration. Tests need to be added to validate that overwriting is allowed, and happens correctly in different situations: I believe the order should be that flex-config is overwritten by a custom config (can we have more than one user config? is the order deterministic? I forget...), is overwritten by commandline or OEM. Did I miss any? (I didn't write code which changes this, it works however the existing configuration system allows overwriting and appending; if we have tests for that, maybe we don't need them duplicated for this feature.)
    Doc: Yes. Please read the updated javadocs in CompilerConfiguration.

  • SDK Setup Installation failed

    Hi Guys:
    We created an SDK Setup as we do for every Add-On using a separated solution to include, Customer Library, Setup & SDK Setup.
    We followed all the stesp we normally do, Change Add-On Name and Executable file, Include Customer Library Conpilation Output and files needed to run Add-On
    The Add-On Registration Starts, Goes thru the Setup Wizard and after the Setup Wizard finishes it waits with the hourglass until times out and shows you that SDK Setup Installation failed.
    So it does not finishes the Add-On Installation.
    I have Created a new VS Solution and create everything from scratch and samething happened.
    Does somebody has had the same problem, and found a solution for it.
    Thanks

    Please post it on the SDK forum:

  • 1.4.2 SDK Windows installation problem

    Hello,
    I have installed the SDK under the C:\Program Files\Sun directory without any error messages. I tried to start the domain "domain1". I get the error message shown below. I am aware that the SDK has problems with space characters in directory names. However, I installed the software using C:\Progra~1\Sun as the install directory. After reading some of the other postings, I created the environment variable SUNPATH and replaced all PATH references to SUNPATH. This did not help. Is it impossible to install the SDK under the "Program Files" directory?
    Thanks!

    Although you managed to circumvent install time check for the space character in the path (which was not supported in this release) by specifying the installation directory in shortened 8.3 form, installation directory eventually gets resolved to its canonical path (which includes space character) and that is causing product scripts to fail during server startup later on.
    Installing in paths containing space character will be fully supported in upcoming Application Server 8 PE release. However, in order to use SDK download you currently have you'll have to uninstall it and re-install it in different directory location to get it up and running.

  • SDK samples not compilable

    Hi,
    I am trying to compile the sample projects of the InDesign SDK. Tried it on OS X 10.8.5 with Xcode 5 but I always got the following compiler error "Unsupported compiler 'com.apple.compilers.llvmgcc42' selected for architecture 'i386'".
    If I am using the default compiler Apple LLVM 5, there are many unknown types like "FORCE_INLINE", "CursHandle" or "const_reference".
    Does anyone knows how to build the sample projects?
    Kind regards

    Please verify that you are using correct dev environment, like the correct version of XCode, gcc compiler, MAC and Adobe Sdk. From your question i am guessing that you are building the plugins for CC2014, for that you need to use XCode 5.0.2 and compile with MAC 10.8 sdk. I also got this error of FORCE_INLINE sometime back and it was resolved by rechecking/fixing the dev environment and checking the project setting especially w.r.t. the above points.
    Thanks,

  • SAP RFC SDK 7.10 Compilation Issues

    Hello ,
    We have a Pro*C program that is using the RFC SDK 7.10
    When we are compiling our program with Pro*C Compiler in HP UX 11iv2 os we are getting the following errors:

    I had checked the files sapuc.h and sapucx.h are correctly included in my program.
    Also I checked for the errors : that the reference of some constants like
    SAP_U16_PROTOTYPE is present is sapuc.h - However I am not able to
    identify the cause of compilation issues.
    Please can anyone guide me - or give any hints as to how this compilation issues can be resolved.
    On sap rfc sdk version 6.20 with HPUnix 11iV1  we did not face such problems. Post that release  we have tried all libraries including 6.40  and all of them are giving the above errors.
    Thanks for the help.

    This compiler error looks really strange.
    Without your sources (of the affected file) and the full command line it's impossible to suggest something.

    Out of interest, what is xjavac? Does it work when
    you use javac itself?xjavac is javac renamed. i have 1.3, 1.4 and an older SDK environment. this way i make sure that the correct exe file is run.

  • SDK 3.0: Compiler bug with std::deque?

    When I call std::deque::assign(), I get all kinds of compile-time errors, including internal compiler errors.
    Note, however, that this happens only when I compile for the 3.0 device. It does not happen when I compile for the 3.0 simulator, 2.x device or 2.x simulator. In all those other modes it compiles and works just fine. Only when compiling for the 3.0 device, the compiler errors happen.
    I'm pretty certain this is a bug in the SDK. Has anyone else noticed this?

    Assign is a particularly tricky one. There are two assign methods. One takes two iterators and the other takes a size and value:
    template<class InputIterator>
    void assign(InputIterator first, InputIterator last);
    void assign(size_type n, const T & t);
    For whatever reason, the compiler for the 3.0 device is saying "int" and "int *" are the same type. It is instantiation the version with the iterators instead of the second one. This is a typical error you might see on a platform with weak C++ support. I used to have to deal with things like this all the time in the early days of MacOS X.
    Unfortunately, the only workaround is to do something else. The following should work:
    #include <algorithm>
    std::deque<int> values;
    std::filln(std::backinserter(values), 10, 1);

  • IPhone SDK custom installation, what do I need?

    FYI, I will be developing iPhone Apps only and don't want to install unnecessary things.
    Options are:
    Developer Tools Essentials (Required.)
    iPhone SDK (Obviously need.)
    System Tools (Do I need? It's checked by default.)
    UNIX Development Support (Do I need? It's checked by default.)
    Mac OS X 10.3.9 Support (Know I don't need, not developing anything for OS X, particularly not an old version.)
    WebObjects (Do I need? It's NOT checked by default.)
    Thanks.

    Hi--
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
    System Tools (Do I need? It's checked by default.)
    I would suggest "yes." That's the installer for the performance tools. Shark, especially, can be invaluable for profiling your code.
    UNIX Development Support (Do I need? It's checked by default.)
    I'd suggest "yes." It's command line tools you might want at some point (to help in automating builds, etc.). Some aspects of scripting with OS X can also be made easier if you have the UNIX dev support installed.
    WebObjects (Do I need? It's NOT checked by default.)
    Definitely not, that's a web application framework you'd use if you were building a web site.

  • Need to install ODI studio and ODI sdk(Developer Installation)

    HelloHi every one,
    Can any one suggest me in brief, how to install them, and also what are the things that I need to do before installing them, And where do I get them.
    can you give me the brief guidance.
    configuration:- Windows XP service pack 3 processor:-i7 , RAM-3.22GB.
    Thanks,
    Karthik

    The pre-requsites for installing ODI is
    1) supportable RDBMS 2) JDK (preferably version less than 7) you can search for ODI support matrix to get the exact supportable versions.
    for downloading them goto https://edelivery.oracle.com/ (you can use the same oracle acct that you have for this discussion forum)
    ODI installations are of two types:
    1) Standalone installation (check boxes : ODI Studio, SDK, Standalone Agent while installation) (you can refer to any of the ODI blogs which will have a step by step process of installing ODI)
    2) Java EE installation (integration with Oracle Web-logic server/[IBM websphere as well if ODI 11.1.17]) this requires a webserver to be installed before installing ODI.

  • None of the SDK Examples are Compiling in Xcode ???

    Hi....
    I have just downloaded the PPRO CC SDK - I am trying the examples but NONE of them are compiling...
    REZ Error 3 etc etc etc - Missing Headers and what not
    Is this for real ????
    -- Best
    Morten

    Hi Morten,
    So you are compiling using XCode 5 on 10.9, right?
    You have two options:
    1) From an older version of XCode, copy across the 10.7 SDK, which is what the sample projects expect (since Premiere Pro CC runs on Mac OS 10.7 and later)
    /Applications/Xcode.app/Contents/Developer/Platforms/MacOSX.platform/Developer/SDKs/MacOS X10.7.sdk
    or
    2) In the Build Settings, change the Base SDK to OS X 10.8.  This means the plug-ins you build will not work on 10.7.

  • IOS improved packaging SDK is missing compile-abc.exe error

    I am trying to test out the new and improved iOS packaging on my Windows machine and I am having some trouble getting it to work. I am using AIR 4.0.1170 for Flex developers and as the announcement says, added "-useLegacyAOT no" to my packaging options in FB. I believe it is in the correct spot because moving it to other places in the packaging options gives me syntax errors and when I do "-useLegacyAOT yes", it packages just fine, but takes a really long time. I keep getting the following error:
    SDK is missing file C:\{my 4.0 sdk path}/lib/aot/bin/compile-abc/compile-abc.exe
    Sure enough, navigating to that path shows compile-abc does not exist. Any ideas of what I may be doing wrong?

    We are aware of the issue and investigating it.As if now,-useLegacyAOT switch is not working on windows.For more information please see this:
